That's probably because Melee was released close to launch, and such titles tend to have longer shelf lives than titles released later on.

True, but still Melee had quite a selling punch to it, even beating out the first Halo (although that did have a squeal that generation).

If it comes it better still have the Star Wars characters.

That was Soul Calibur, not Street Fighter

It's foolish to think that even if the price was $15 lower that the same cheap skates out there would just say "why pay for it if I can get it for free", then go right to the internet and keep doing what they are doing.

Not going to quote the entire post, but essentially: bravo BlackNMild2k1, you had me applauding your point here and the way you stated it.

Thus, Dead Space Extraction sells extremely poorly, despite its quality.

Dead Space was going up against Resident Evil. EA made a huge mistake by doing that. I already had Umbrella Chronicles, and while I did want one more rail shooter for my collection (and only one) Capcom already had my dollar reserved with their next offering. For many, one rail shooter was enough. EA didn't stand a chance and should have had that foresight.

Hell, I even bought Dead Space Extraction (once it went on sale) for my sister, and she still has yet to open it because Darkside is still keeping her busy. Even to rail shooter fans, it's timing was poor, but really that genre is dead (or really has always been dead, the Wii only breathed some minor life into it temporarily) going by recent sales of other titles there.

Nintendo made the Wii for themselves, not third parties.  Nintendo is relatively indifferent to third parties, and in return third parties are relatively indifferent towards Nintendo.

Then third parties should make more of an effort. If the Chinese government is indifferent or hard to work with, should companies avoid or act meagerly toward this market? No, and nor are they because they see the large base of consumers with growing disposable income. Third parties should be the same way with the Wii. They need to take the initiative.

Sony and Microsoft are better at courting third parties, and could be argued are getting more of a reward from them. That said, the bottom line should be the most important thing, not the easiest road, and far too many of these publishers come across as simply not having the initiative that they need in a market where Nintendo is #1 again.

Have you ever heard Microsoft or Sony say ANYTHING negative about third-parties, EVER?  Hell, even when Activision publicly threatened to pull PS3 support, Sony didn't say anything bad about them!  That's because they need to stay on good terms with third parties, because they need that third-party dough coming in.

This is a odd point to make... has Nintendo said negative things about a third party?

EDIT: Damn, I was too slow on making this point.

Wii is where original IPs go to die, yet everybody continues to kid themselves that it's some huge opportunity just because it has a large userbase (that doesn't play much else other than Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Mario Kart).

Doesn't the Wii have a pretty large number of million sellers at this point, and from third parties no less? I was under the impression that they did from looking at the Sales Data thread on these forums. That alone tells me that it is a good opportunity for third party developers.

EDIT: To borrow from Salesbot:

I don't think that Super Mario Land selling better than Super Mario Brothers 3 has anything to do with one being on a handheld vs. console. Super Mario Land was one of the first Game Boy games so it didn't really have much competition, whereas Super Mario Brothers 3 released at a time when hundreds of other NES games were available and the Super NES wasn't too far off either.

Mop it up makes a excellent point. At the time Mario Land was released it was pretty much the only game in town beyond Tetris on the system in terms of an "A+" quality game that would turn heads.

If I'm not mistaken, Reggie was kind of strong armed into the bet by the interviewer. His choice was either go with the bet, or lose face and say that it wouldn't outsell it.

The conditions of the bet, and choice that it would be the 360 version, were done by the interviewer. Reggie takes fault for agreeing, but given the circumstance I don't think it's too absurd to assume things like shortages and what not could effect what was a casual agreement on his part. He didn't come to the table with these things thought out long term or a more calculated approach to feasibility.

But yeah, he will be proven wrong in the end for sure.

TalkBack / Re: Green Day: Rock Band Announced
« on: December 13, 2009, 06:23:48 PM »
And the music genre continues to die.  If you look at the sales of both these series only 2 years ago, and then compare them to what they have now, the drop is ridiculous.  Really now, it's one thing to release a yearly installment of a game, but to release 3-5 different versions of what gameplay wise is the SAME DAMN GAME in a single year is just beyond stupid.

Agree. It seems to be a race to see who can milk every last dollar out of the genre ASAP, without regard to what current actions are doing long term for the genre.

Let's face it, though, Activison would have done this anyway. However, the fact that EA/Viacom is as well is speeding up the process. Furthermore, hasn't it been said that Viacom has yet to make a dime of profit from the Rock Band franchise? If so, clearly they should be aware that the current "slash and burn" technique for milking is going to hinder them if they are looking at this like a long term investment.

I do feel for Viacom here, though. Their hands are tied because Activison has a track record for this, and they either "go with the flow" or let Activison milk the genre for themselves. That said though, if they aren't make a profit now, clearly they should be able to forecast that their situation with Rock Band is only going to grow worse with actions like these.

Oh well, in about 5 years both series will be dead because of their stupidity.

I doubt that, I bet one will survive, just it will have about the same relevance that DDR does today if not a little less (although more than the Tony Hawk games do).

So no surprise that Sheep Man was just announced.  It's hard to think of good ideas for Mega Man.  All the obvious ideas were taken long ago.

I don't know about that, I'm still waiting for Honus Wagner Card Man.

The game can be played a variety of ways and that's what's great about it, I have my preference but I don't have a problem with others deviating from that.

Awesome, so we agree then!

...so wait, how did this convo even start then... >_>

Nothing like a Nintendo forum to get a little back and forth going with two people who agree on the same points I suppose.

The tournament scene represents no more than 1% of the people who own the games.

Who says one has to be part of the tournament scene to enjoy playing the game a certain way? Or even a variety of ways?

The game was designed to be a simplified fighter with easy-to-pick-up controls, and has mass appeal thanks to the various franchises represented within it.

I agree, and it works very well that way.

Brawl has sold the most of the three games and appears on a system which is marketed towards everyone ("casuals" or "non-gamers"). Seems like enough evidence to me.

How do you figure? What does the Wii have to do with it? What do casuals have to do with enjoying the game with or without items? Is there some data I'm unaware of that indicates that casuals only enjoy playing the game with all items, four players? I'd say they are more likely to play with the default option just out of ease, but your original point was that "most" would find other options boring, which I don't believe.

Anyway, again, I just want to make it clear that it frustrates me that people have to rally behind their method of play for this game and feel the need to turn their nose at those who play it differently.

...And on the topic of Super Mario Kart, I always enjoyed this entry in the series as the first one I played. It was a tremendous amount of fun back in the day. However, I felt Mario Kart 64 improved on it tremendously. The games are very different, with dynamics like the jump being more defined and the coins, which gives them both a little life against each other... but I felt Mario Karty 64 was when the series hit its peak and zenith.

Yeah, we're far away from what I consider PGC's golden age (2003-2005).

Ha ha... yeah I have the same "golden age" for the forums as you IceCold.

I don't know if I would consider myself active, though, since I come and go in phases and prior to this it had been almost half a year since I popped in around here. I will attest, though, to being happy when I did come back and seeing a lot of familiar faces like GP, Pro, and BnM.

The forums change. Each day they lose a little from why I love them so much, but at the same time it's amazing how long some of the users here have been active.

EDIT: oh, and funny, I realize that my most distinct memory of GP is those epic "arm wrestling" matches we got into during the Dojo updates for Smash Bros Brawl... good times.

The fact that most people find the game to be boring when you remove all of those elements which set it apart from your typical fighting game is evidence that it wasn't meant to be played that way.

"Most" seems like pretty anecdotal evidence.

If the game wasn't meant to be played that way, then by this time the options simply would have been removed. This isn't like wavedashing, which was not how the game was meant to be played and was therefore removed by the time Brawl came around. It was always their intent to let people play it how they wanted to, and for some reason people throw a hissy fit that some enjoy the game in a totally different way than themselves.

I hate how often Smash Bros discussion turns to a "the way it was meant to be played" argument. This goes both ways. Tournament players, and those who criticize the tournament players. Neither is innocent, and there are cases in both where some are close minded beyond belief.

Some people like to play with no items on Final Destination? Awesome.
Some people like to play with all items on PictoChat? Groovy.
Some people like to play with only Bombombs on Smashville? Nice.

Why the heck does it matter how some enjoy the game? The futility of this argument knows no bounds. And I speak from someone who enjoys all of the above mentioned methods of play and many more. The game is versatile, yet some treat that as a personal affront.

Play on easy? ahahhah =D

I'm on normal, so I guess the hit detection area is normal sized which still seems easier than the normal sized hit detection area in the previous game.

I agree, it is. But if you play on Easy you will notice the most dramatic difference between them. I wonder if it gets even harder on Very Hard as well, or if that is the same as the previous difficulty.

Also, I'm disappointed at the lack of true bonus stages in this game. I thought the Krauser ones were just one of several, but I see that's it... very lame. Where are the Hunk or Ada levels to spice things up like the first had? It seems like Capcom really took a cost cutting maneuver by making you play the exact two same levels with just added voice over and nothing more...

I don't quite follow.  Plz elaborate.

If you haven't played the game on easy, try it. Attempt to get a head shot. Now do the same on Hard on the same level. The hit detection area that counts as a head shot is dramatically larger on the easier difficulties.

Okay, head shots are "kinda" easier compared to the first.... how easy they are to get is tied to difficulty now. So getting head shots on Hard, for example, is really a test of one's sense of aiming. That was quite a surprise.
