Rare is a special case. Most often, that would not have happend, but Nintendo allowed them to keep the rights to their work, probably to keep a good relationship, except for Donkey Kong (naturally). Had they known the company would have turned around and walked to Microsoft, I'm sure the situation would have been different.

Anyway, I did some research by looking at the US Copyright Office for their record on Xenosaga, and it reads:

Registration Number:         PA-1-261-184
Title:         Xenosaga
Description:         Videogame.
Claimant:         Namco Bandai Games, Inc.
Created:         2006
Published:         8Apr06
Registered:         25Aug06
Previous Related Version:         2 episodes preexisting.

All entries for the series credit Namco. So unless Namco is really nice to the firm, I expect they don't get the series.

So the PS3 is in a slow decline... while the 360 also slumps compared to last week. Color me surprised. I figured there would be enough disfranchised Playstation fans to see the 360 rise a little in the country; however, these seem to be, primarly, jumping into the Wii camp.

Can't complain, though.

Why would I p... oh right.

Anyway, I wasn't planing to post something here everytime a new feature develops related to the game as, hopefully, this is just the tip of the iceberg of many things to come. However, I did find his answer to this question from the latest interview interesting, though:

Quote

Toho Kingdom: The Wii has been selling fantastically since its launch, to the point where the system could very well become the top selling console, on a worldwide level, by the end of the year at its current rate of sales. However, leading up to its release many publishers saw the system as a questionable variable, coming off of Nintendo’s lowest console market share with the Gamecube; in fact, many analysts had predicted the system would get lost in the shuffle against the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. So what led Atari to pick the Wii as the home console for Godzilla: Unleashed before the system had debuted?

Keehwan Her: It was clear to us from the very beginning of this project that the Nintendo Wii was the perfect console for this game, because Godzilla® Unleashed will take advantage of the Wii’s unique features like no other game has (so far). When I first heard about the Wii-mote and its unique capabilities, I immediately thought that a fighting game would be perfect for this kind of controller interface. The wireless motion sensors in conjunction with the accelerometers in the Wii-mote (plus nunchuk) allow us to map many of the monsters’ moves directly onto our own natural body movements. This intuitive aspect of the control scheme allows the player to almost literally become the monster. At the same time, we did not want to lose the complexity and responsiveness that a player demands from a deep fighting game, so we’ve combined this gesture-based input with button-based input that will sometimes initiate and other times modify the player’s moves. The result is this game will be easy to play and yet hard to master.

My comparison was of the retail/consumer relationship, not the format itself, which is why I placed it after the "death spiral" comment. Simply put: if sales aren't there, then retailers will slash the shelf space for the item. The lack of shelf, which includes decreased variety in this case, then begins to impact sales causing them to lower further, often sending the product into a "death spiral".

The fact is this is a simple supply and demand equation.  If the players were selling, then they would keep the higher prices and make a buttload of money.

Costs are going down, but I think you hit on the bigger reason here. Sony was recently beating their own chest in triumph over the milestone of Casino Royale at 100,000 units... however, in the typically Sony fashion, those are shipped and not sold figures. Rumor has it that, in fact, a lot of those copies have not sold. If demand is that low, and you factor in that a lot of the players on the market are currently PS3s, you are probably getting a little worried if you are producing the stand alone players. So it's really not a surprise that they have began to slash prices so drastically. I wouldn't be surprised even if they are now turning hardly any profit at all in hopes that it just might accelerate the growth of the format for more sales later on.

Let's face it too, if they don't start selling, then stores will start to slash the space they have for the format until that sends the discs and players into a death spiral (ala UMDs).

Considering we haven't seen, or even heard much of, SSBB lately... that's very unlikely. I imagine the game will be there, and hopefully we will get to see a new character or two, considering the last one that was shown off was Fox back in November of 2006 (six months ago).

If anyone wants to see how they do it, here ya go:

http://gonintendo.com/?p=12833

They don't post the whole review, not even close. They just post a small snipit, without even citing the score, and then give a link so that people can read the whole thing. I see nothing wrong with their method in the least, except for the fact that they only credit the site and not the author of the piece.

No, they have not. I'm not a huge fan of Gonintendo or anything, but I'm pretty saddned to see the amount of bandwagoning going on here when people aren't even familiar with the other site... People were complaining about the GoNintendo users, but I mean look what is happening here.

Personally, I don't think GoNintendo needs to contact a site everytime they post a small snipit and a link to the source. That's fine, it's fair use. I think the only case that can be made here, as I stated, is that they should cite the author of the piece instead of just the website that it came from.

Maybe it's because they felt RE5 and DMC4 could stand on their own, and so they wanted "gameday" to focus on titles that might normally get lost in the shuffle?

It helps when you are the largest "Godzilla focused" site on the net, both in terms of hits and content.

We have had a running relationship with Atari too going as far back as G: DAMM for the Gamecube, where I got to interview the producer, Kirby Fong. He stepped down during "Save the Earth", but a contributor of ours called Chris Mirjahangir really set his eyes on picking back up that relationship for this new game, and has been in constant contact with them, both through e-mail and phone, to make this possible. It sounds like we are going to get a lot more "eye turning" content this time around, which I'm thrilled about.

Really excited about this game too, and hope it does very well when it goes on sale as I would love to see this series continue, and remain on the Wii.

Bumb.

Atari sent us some exclusives, including some new shots of the character models, and I must say I'm impressed:

Perhaps it's just my bias for the source, as I love Godzilla, but I think this is definitely shaping up to be one of the more graphically impressive titles coming to the Wii this year.

They were roughly a million ahead from the total sales of the first Xbox last month... or projected that way, the NPD will give a clearer image when it comes out for last month.

I could stir the kettle further by raising into doubt what the defect rate is on the 360 compared to the original system, and how that might further play into the actual consumer base of the two... but there isn't much data there to go off of anyway.

Because it has been a year now, and it's still happening, and not just in one market. On the other hand, the Wii IS outselling the PS2.

EDIT: Or was, until last month in the US when the PS2 took 2nd.

Bingo. That is their #1 objective. Let's not ignore the recent reports either that Microsoft might have dumped a ton of consoles onto the market to meet their "10 million" shipped target last holiday... which sales still haven't caught up to that mark yet:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Xbox-360-Microsoft-Mugged-Their-own-Sales-Figures-51980.shtml

Clearly this company is out for market share and perception at this point, and being beaten by a last generation console more than a year after launch doesn't look good, period. It's not a strong sign that Microsoft's offering is going to take #1 for this generation, as many had predicted if the PS3 had stumbled.

Sony tripped on their own feet and are a bad example here with the PS3. The best one is to compare the 360's sales to the original Xbox's in the same time frame, which looks bad for the company, especially considering the 360's massive head start. Let's not ignore the fact that the PS2 is still outselling the 360 in most markets too.

Hmm... now that I think more about it, perhaps the latest, more expensive model of the Xbox 360 was an attempt to mover closer to profitability? A small glimpse of what could be in store if the company were at #1? I originally thought this was their attempt to fight off the PS3 by moving the 360 closer to its price range so that consumers don't disregard it (price = quality to many who don't research a purchase), however it could have been just the company moving slowly toward their desired price for a system like this instead. Getting the market ready, if you will, for the price hike of its successor, assuming they take #1.

Who knows though, but it sure did make them seem even less desirable to joe average who now sees an even more expensive model, making his choice harder and making the Wii's price point seem ever better.

Could be possible, although I also assume such a statement would ignore marketing costs and other aspects of selling the system, which are probably tremendous.

It's not like the OS market where people will be forced to buy their garbage every year: the game market actually functions on quality and every five years, you need to earn your customer base back ALL over again.

Bingo, we have a winner. MS went into this stating they would be in the red for the first two generations and go into the black for the third... so it's very clear they had something close to this concept in mind. However, the goodwill they earned with the Xbox has not expanded their sales very much compared to the former in the same time frame, which had tougher competition from the PS2 as well.

I'm sure Nintendo leaping from third to a likely first, and Sony doing just the opposite, is having them now wondering if their strategy to tackle the market for the long term is actually going to pay off in the end.

1272
Let's get this kettle going:

http://ce.seekingalpha.com/article/32642

A financial analyst by the name of Roger Ehrenberg has wrote a pretty scathing report on Microsoft's progress with the Xbox, or lack there of as he puts it. The article focuses on the money side of things, with particular emphasis on the amount of money Microsoft has lost on the brand so far. To quote:

Quote

Well, after five years and over $21 billion invested all they've got to show for it is $5.4 billion of cumulative operating losses, and Xbox 360 doesn't appear to be the silver bullet to turn things around.

Overall, I thought it was a very good article, that talked about a lot of important points, some which are common fact now (like the Xbox selling better in the same time frame in Japan compared with the 360). My only problem with the article was that he started out by citing "Wikipedia.org" as one of his sources... bad idea there. So I'm interested to hear what others thought of it.
