TalkBack / Re: No Underwater Stages in Donkey Kong Country Returns

Maybe unlockable animals? Beat the game, get to use one in the stages or something, or play the game again with them. Would add a lot of replay value and at the same time the game can be unbalanced since its something that the player unlocks to play around with.

TalkBack / Re: GoldenEye Details Confirmed, Not a Remake
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:50:52 PM »
That is to say that yes, there is a level based on a dam, but that's because there is a dam in the movie.  The level itself has to be different in ways than the N64 game because Rare created that.  If Rare had created a level in the game NOT based on the movie, Activision's GoldenEye could not rely on that scenario.

The movie opens with Bond jumping off the Dam... you really don't see anything of the actual Dam beyond him leaping from it and the small gate and railing. However, the video going around for this game looks like they took the opening portion of the N64 and added rain effects.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekGb8SsEcis

Watch the video and look at around the 40 second mark. The truck is there from the first level, and even the double bridges that you cross.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2s_m7GEyIw

N64 version with around the 1:50 mark being the Dam level. Now take note that none of that is from the movie, yet the similarity to the N64 game is overt as one can get besides adding rain to it (which doesn't even make sense in regards to the events of the movie).

Well then you've gotta be in the minority, man. 'Cause I just don't see that as being a selling point.  Most I ever carried mine was in a sleeve inside my backpack that I carried around campus during my college years.

Well place me in the minority as well, because I place my DS in my pocket as well.

Goldeneye is floating on nostalgia, and the new game isn't going to deliver what people are expecting.

No doubt. If the game is anything less than great, I have a feeling word of mouth is going to be brutal due to how Activision is promoting it.

Also, people who think GoldenEye is a better game than Perfect Dark have either never played Perfect Dark or are criminally insane (or both).

I think both are about the same to be honest. I feel that Goldeneye has a better single player mode, while Perfect Dark has a far better multiplayer mode.

I also prefer the Bond/spy angle of Goldeneye over the futuristic/alien angle of Perfect Dark.

EDIT: I took so long to post that Mop it up basically said the same thing, but far more elegantly...

You could also unlock St. Petersburg.

Forgot about that.

Goldeneye was one of those games where having a Gameshark was perfect in order to unlock extra stuff that went unfinished.

This happens every time.  Fans ask for the same exact thing again, get it, and then complain that it's too similar.  To recreate the magic the game needs to change things up.

Couldn't agree more, excellent post Ian.

Any word yet if all the classic multiplayer levels are returning, or just a few.

I hope its all.

It would be great if the Cradle was included, as that was a scraped multiplayer level that could be accessed via a Gameshark and... was surprisingly fun.

Honestly, I think that a lot of people are overestimating the number of people who want to play Goldeneye again, especially after Perfect Dark came out on the Xbox Live Arcade.

I'm not arguing with the first statement... but the second seems moot.

The original Perfect Dark sold around 1.5 million copies, while Goldeneye sold nearly 6 million. Perfect Dark doesn't have anywhere near the name recognition or popularity that Goldeneye does amongst your average consumer. Perfect Dark on Xbox Live likely won't have much of an affect on how this game does in the end.

I knew the headline was wrong, the PSP was not the best selling system. The best selling system was the DS as usual.

If you combine both skus of the DSi, you are right

I would ask why does he care what happens to the PSP line since he works at Capcom... but then it says right there he used to work for Sony. Mystery solved.

I know that I'm excited for this, but I didn't realize that there are many people who grew up with the snes but don't follow Nintendo anymore that will be just as excited as I am.

My girlfriend is the same way. She grew up on the SNES, and we recently played New Super Mario Bros on the Wii... and she said "I wish they made a Donkey Kong game like this". So when they announced this, she was the first one I showed the trailer for and she described it as "Donkey Kong Porn": she was in heaven.

It's always saddened me to see the people behind one of my favorite games of all time (Baten Kaiton Origins) have there games do poorly.

Likewise and it's good to see someone praise the Baten Kaiton series, as I love that franchise.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's Next Console May Employ 3D
« on: June 17, 2010, 03:16:27 PM »
But if they're going to wait until 3D TVs have a 30% adoption rate well what timeframe are we talking about?  Three years?  Five years?

Iwata never said the next console was tied to 3D TVs... the comment was even directed at the Wii. All he said was that the Wii couldn't do it, due to processing power, but that it was something for the next console.

All this means is:

1. The next console will be powerful enough to do 3D
2. Nintendo will only focus on 3D console gaming if TV adoption rate is above 30%

Period. Please don't twist the data to make it seem like Nintendo is gearing up for 3D TVs, or even that the comment makes it seem like they are waiting for 3D adoption rate before releasing another console... because neither is true based on the statement.

TalkBack / Re: 3DS to Allow the Dumping of Games to Internal Memory
« on: June 17, 2010, 12:37:42 PM »
Yeah, I can't see this working as it seems to imply... if for nothing more than I don't see the 3DS having tons of storage space for games to be dumped on.

However, maybe this allows for one game to be dumped at a time? So you can play your current inserted cartridge along with one other dumped game, which you can save over with a new game if you like that erases the old. That would be neat and useful... but would be awful with saved game data in the mix.

142
This isn't really a good thing, but, given the tech level of the 3DS, I can see third parties releasing the same game simultaneously on 3DS and Wii.

That could be a good thing, at least if it gets some devs to finally stop ignoring the Wii (I'm looking at you Namco and Capcom...)

I don't know if you've been following E3, but Nintendo announced a new handheld system that does 3D gaming that I expect will be at least moderately successful.

On that note, that works fine for me too.

Handhelds: Touch screen and 3D display
Consoles: Motion controls

Each unique and possible of diverse experiences versus the other, exactly what the PSP was not compared to the PS2.

Yoshi's Story's biggest problem was that it was following up YOSHI'S FUCKING ISLAND.  So a super easy game where the challenge is to get a high score (which people stopped caring about back in 1984) was totally not what people wanted.  I mark it as a big marketing brainfart on Nintendo's part.  It's like they were unaware how much prestige the Yoshi brand carried at the time.

I have to concur with Ian 100%. I loved Yoshi's Island so much, and my anticipation for Yoshi's Story was off the charts (only Super Mario RPG 2, later to be called Paper Mario, was higher). For me, Yoshi's Story was a huge disappointment. The largest complaint being that it was so short, and in an era with few N64 games to tide one over that was a death sentence.

The game gets harder for the all-melons, and yes I got all 30 at one point. However, I did so more because I felt I had to get my money's worth out of the game rather than it being compelling enough to make me want to do so on its own.

Not interested in Ocarina again... but a portable Star Fox 64 is a dream. It's the perfect "pick up and play" type of title, and its relatively short length with branching levels is ideal for a hand held.

Ok, a personal plea to the mods: can we please get Pro a one-day ban from the site or something for the nonsense he's been doing here?  Even for Pro this is obnoxious.
I second this, but you'll probably have to PM one.

Third this. Trying to go back and read it while on break and its basically unreadable thanks to hulk and Pro ruining the thread (and I generally like Pro, but this was way out of hand and annoying).

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Ideas for Super Mario RPG 2
« on: June 11, 2010, 03:19:40 AM »
I'm not sure how relevant this is to the discussion, but before Square abandoned Nintendo during the N64 era there were rumors (maybe more than that) of there going to be a Super Mario RPG game on the N64.

It was more than just a rumor, but Super Mario RPG 2 for the N64 was renamed before release to *drum roll*: Paper Mario. Wise choice, since the games are totally different from one another besides having stat elements.

Here is a video of Paper Mario with the Super Mario RPG 2 title still attached to it.

Despite Xbox being clearly a strong brand name in the console industry, when does MS pull out?  At some point it has to make money.  The idea was to lose money in the shortterm to gain a market foothold for the longterm.  Well they got the market foothold they wanted but it still has to make money or the plan has failed.

The original plan was actually two generations of loses, followed by profit in the third. So the console after the 360 is meant to strike gold.

Problem is that plan was constructed in a very different atmosphere, with Sega out and Playstation 2 breaking records... not to mention a better economy. The market has proved far less brand loyal to consoles than originally thought, since Nintendo went from third to first in the span of a generation while Sony did the inverse.

Suddenly that slow burning market foothold idea doesn't seem so good, as the market has proved more volatile than anyone could have guessed when Sony was on top. Success one generation does not promise it the next, so all this money thrown into the Xbox brand is likely making investors less than thrilled as this revelation has become all but clear.

I'm hoping that it was just was a shot of Carnage himself & neither a Spider-Carnage or Zombie Spidey. Wouldn't consider either a hero anyway seeing as both eat people...

Exactly why I don't want it to be the Zombie one.

And good point. If its just a shot of Carnage, it could just be the Ultimate Universe. It would explain why you can see the light from the background in the mouth of Carnage, and plus it glowed yellow already. However, that will be a pretty boring choice compared to the drastically different 2099 and Noir... but the most likely considering they are starting a cartoon based on the Ultimate Spider-man line.
