TalkBack / Six 3D Classics Developed for 3DS
« on: June 03, 2011, 09:23:06 AM »

After Excitebike and Xevious, there are four more to come.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26518

Six 3DS Classics titles have been made for the Nintendo 3DS. Following the release of Excitebike worldwide and Xevious at the Japanese eShop launch, there will be four more titles.

Development on 3DS Classics started at the end of 2009. The latest Iwata Asks has some insight on the process. The games may seem like straight ports, but there is a lot of work in making them 3D. For instance, the first title the team tried was Xevious, but when they made it they realized it looks off to have these enemies shooting at the flying ship from the ground, or having the ship drop bombs to the ground on 2 simple planes.

In other words, there has to be a clear sense of intermediate depth between the 2 planes for it to look correct.

TalkBack / Full Save States Possible for 3DS Virtual Console Games
« on: June 03, 2011, 02:18:43 AM »

Now you can try to get past that tricky spot again and again.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26517/full-save-states-possible-for-3ds-virtual-console-games

Games made available on the Virtual Console service of the Nintendo eShop will have full save states. This means that it is possible to save your game during gameplay, and retry from that point in the game multiple times.

For the Wii, it is only possible to "suspend" a game, creating a pause point that you can go back to once. Adding save states to Game Boy titles solves the problem of games that had no save option at all or used passwords.

So next week when you are playing Super Mario Land, Game Over will not be a threat.

84

Three titles announced for North America, with one substitution for Europe.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26497

Following the launch of the eShop, upcoming titles for the North American Virtual Console are set to include Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Radar Mission. The European Virtual Console list differs slightly with Super Mario Land, Alleyway, and Tennis set to be available at launch. Pricing is still unknown.

This follows the news that 10 eShop downloads will appear on the Japanese service. The Virtual Console selection for Japan has five completely different games, as well as Super Mario Land, the only game coming to every region.

As we revealed earlier this week, Excitebike will be free to download from the eShop following the system update. Nintendo's announcement today confirmed that the offer will last until July 7 in North America and Europe.

While we had speculated that Pokédex 3D will use StreetPass for trading the little monsters, it was revealed that AR Markers will allow you to scan the data and display the creatures using the AR Viewer.

As in Japan, the Nintendo 3DS web browser will become available along with the eShop system update.

TalkBack / Wii Successor Could Use Flash Memory and 25GB Discs
« on: May 03, 2011, 02:02:53 PM »

The latest word is that Café will not have a hard drive.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/26204

The Wii follow-up is set to contain eight gigabytes of on-board flash memory and will not use a hard drive, sources have allegedly told gaming blog Kotaku. The new system, which is scheduled to be revealed at E3, may also use a disc format that can hold 25GB of data.

It is unclear whether the system will be using a blue laser technology similar to Sony’s Blu-Ray format or red laser technology like the defunct HD-DVD format and regular DVD. A dual-layer HD-DVD can hold 30GB of data, while a single-layer Blu-Ray disc can hold 25GB. Additionally, the console is expected to use SD cards for saving. High definition graphics are expected as the system is set to support resolutions up to 1080p.

Eight gigabytes is an increase from the Wii's 512MB of internal storage, and works out to approximately 64,000 blocks in Wii terms.

It is noted that specifications could easily be altered before launch.

86

Update to the new firmware next month and Excitebike will be free on the eShop in Japan.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26150

Excitebike will be among the first games to be released as part of the 3DS Classics on the Nintendo 3DS eShop for Japan when the service launches in late May. These games are classic Nintendo releases enhanced for the 3DS. The NES title will be available free of charge following the long-awaited firmware update next month, which is set to make several 3DS features available including 3DS Virtual Console.

The announcement was made at Nintendo's recent Investors Briefing for the fiscal year 2010 to 2011. Nintendo also confirmed that the first 3DS Virtual Console games will be for Game Boy and Game Boy Color, with other platforms to follow.

TalkBack / BurgerTime HD Changes Name to BurgerTime World Tour
« on: April 25, 2011, 04:38:33 PM »

From this day forward, BurgerTime is on World Tour.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26145

BurgerTime HD is no more, as the game will now be known as BurgerTime World Tour. The name change applies to all platforms.

BurgerTime World Tour is a revival of the 1982 arcade title with brand new gameplay elements and level design, which brings Peter Pepper's world into 3D. The game is set for release on WiiWare and other download platforms.

Earlier this week, we posted our impressions of the WiiWare version and an interview with the creators.

The president of MonkeyPaw Games gives us the lowdown on the WiiWare release of this classic revival.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/interview/26144

MonkeyPaw Games recently revealed BurgerTime World Tour for download platforms. They are known for publishing a wide variety of titles and brought NWR cult classic Cho Aniki to PSN. Working together with Frozen Codebase, who released Jam City Rollergirls earlier this year, the WiiWare title is set to recreate BurgerTime in a fresh way that still represents the classic arcade experience. John Greiner, president of MonkeyPaw Games and Ben Geisler, president of Frozen Codebase tell us all about BurgerTime on WiiWare.

Nintendo World Report (NWR): Why revive BurgerTime now? Does anyone even remember the original?

John Greiner, MonkeyPaw Games (JG): Anyone who knows their retro knows BurgerTime. It was that quintessential American arcade game…even though it was developed in Japan! Whether you’re old enough to remember the era, you’d know BurgerTime was one of the best arcade games ever.

Many fine classics have been left for dead as time moves on. But when I was at Hudson Entertainment, BurgerTime was our best-selling mobile title, beating out Bomberman and Bonk. So we knew there was still market left in the game.

Too many retros are fitted with new graphics and then expected to fly. That doesn’t work.  With BurgerTime, we took the hook and wrapped it in an entirely new world. What came out is a smooth platformer with instinctively great AI, contemporary graphics and a heck of a brand name.

NWR: What is it about BurgerTime that makes it special and worth bringing to the crowded modern gaming market?

JG: The play in BurgerTime is running your routes, laying your traps and formulating your strategy. The enemies run calculated patterns so you could memorize their routes and get pretty good at evading them while stealing your slice of burger. That was the magic.
The beautiful part of a classic arcade game is the lack of reliance on graphics. The hook of the gameplay is what creates the fun. The AI is all about timing. We thought bringing that hook and gameplay to today’s gamers was achievable. But we needed a new world and twist to make it modern.

NWR: What does BurgerTime World Tour add to the gameplay of BurgerTime?

JG: We left in the retro fun but expanded the canvas so that the game delivers contemporary graphics and complexity. We instituted a Rotary Environment System where the game plane is wrapped on the circumference of a cylinder. This stretches the field and gives a 3D element where you can see through the cylinder to the other side. You can see the state of other burgers and the position of your enemies. It adds a unique playing field and introduces new platform elements while adding numerous levels of strategy that’s best showcased in multiplayer.

NWR: How have you dealt with the special opportunities and restrictions of the WiiWare platform?

Ben Geisler, Frozen Codebase (BG): It was necessary to make the game smaller, just due to the size limitations. But we were able to keep the core mechanics. The development team really enjoys the limit because it pushes creativity: it's been said many times that design constraints force you to make the most important and crucial design decisions. But luckily the game already had a strong core vision which made it fit.

NWR: Are you building a WiiWare demo version?

BG: We'd like to offer a demo version at some point, but it's unclear if the game will ship with this or if it would be a later addition.

NWR: Will the WiiWare version support the online features such as multiplayer and chat?

BG: WiiWare will support split-screen local multiplayer only, so no online multiplayer or chat.

NWR: Does MonkeyPaw Games have any plans to bring more games to WiiWare or Wii Virtual Console? How about 3DSWare/3DS Virtual Console? (eShop)

JG: We’re very close to our fans and react to their comments and requests.  We urge them to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook. When we see enough promise in fans’ requests, we start the process of building out products. At this time, we haven’t planned on a 3DS version, but if people want the game on there, show us some love! We also get new ideas daily for games that we should revive. So your voice is certainly being heard. We’re listening.

NWR: What's your stance on Cho Aniki?

JG: Sounds like a trick question! I love Cho Aniki, don’t you?! We think Cho signifies everything we’d like to do in the game industry… turn it on its head and let all the great games fall out.

TalkBack / Re: The Best 30 DS Games
« on: April 20, 2011, 04:35:59 PM »
You have to realise, it is really, really hard to pick only 10 DS games and not only that, rank them in order. Any way you do it with such limitations you will end up with a crazy list, but a crazy list filled with great games that represent great choices from the immense DS library.

A lot of my picks didn't make the list at all. I decided to go with the games I spent the most time playing. I couldn't pick just 10 otherwise!

A repairs blog recently disassembled the 3DS, revealing the component parts. I thought there was already a way to register certain third-party Wii and DS games in Europe, but I guess I was mistaken.

These "certain" games are distributed by Nintendo, despite being published by third parties so that's why they came with points.

TalkBack / Tepig in New York
« on: March 19, 2011, 11:54:24 PM »

Complete juggle wet trees tomato (New Yoooooork).

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/25750

Everyone knows that Tepig is the best starter in Black and White (I''m looking at you, Ronaghan/Lindemann).

Following our adventures at PAX East 2011, I took the opportunity to take a stroll around New York, the city that Black and White's locale is inspired by, oddly enough. And what trip would be complete without a visit to Nintendo World, the store of dreams.

Walking in you will find a range of Nintendo 3DS consoles to sample, though since it was my fifth time seeing the system, I didn't feel the need to explore the console again. Nintendogs + Cats (minus cats), Steel Diver, Super Street Fighter IV 3D, and LEGO Star Wars III were among the games on offer, in the same versions we had just played at Nintendo''s booth during PAX East.

So we get to the real reason I was there: expanding my plush toys collection. I started with the Pokémon Center area of the store.

But wait, there's more!

Finally, I settled on this fine specimen, and named it "teapigs".

Upwards and onwards.

Where there is a gaming area

more interesting accessories

Club Nintendo prizes and other exclusive items

Black and White concept art

and more plushes.

Having explored what the Nintendo World store had to offer, Teapig begins his New York vacation!

It ended when he tried to eat the Statue of Liberty. Eating national monuments did not go down well.

But the alternative food suited him just fine.

TalkBack / Third Party 3DS Games Include Club Nintendo Europe Points
« on: March 18, 2011, 07:43:37 PM »

3DS game titles from other publishers include a points code for Club Nintendo Europe.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25744

Nintendo 3DS games from publishers, such as Ubisoft, now include a card with a code for Club Nintendo Europe points. Previously, codes were only included with Nintendo published titles. The points can be redeemed for limited edition items on the Club Nintendo official rewards website.

Websites Planet3DS.de and N1ntendo.nl have posted videos showing the points cards included with games such as Ubisoft's Rayman 3D and Ghost Recon Shadow Wars.

The videos also show the new eco-friendly game boxes that are slimmer and use less plastic than the original DS game cases.
