Available in Europe from 14th May.

POKéMON RETURN FOR A COLOSSAL 3D ADVENTURE ON NINTENDO GAMECUBE

On 14th May 2004, Pokémon Colosseum comes to Nintendo GameCube in the first ever 3D role-playing game adventure in the legendary franchise. With the total number of Pokémon games sold worldwide exceeding 120million and the hugely successful Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire for Game Boy Advance having sold over 2.4 million in Europe, the Pokémon phenomenon continues.   Pokémon Colosseum allows you to explore, train, snag and battle your Pokémon like never before! You can even connect your GBA Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire cartridges and bring your own Pokémon over from these games into Pokémon Colosseum to use them in battles.

Pokémon Colosseum can be played in two modes – Story Mode and Battle Mode. Pokémon Colosseum contains lots of the trademark elements that millions love in the Game Boy Advance games as well as many new elements.  Story Mode is a 3D role-playing game, never before experienced in any Pokémon game. Set in a mysterious area far from Hoenn, you can explore with the new lead character and his partner to rescue the “Shadow Pokémon” unseen in Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire. “Shadow Pokémon” are Pokémon whose hearts have been closed to the outside world. Players can unravel the mystery of these “Shadow Pokémon” and try to cure them of their ‘darkness’ by using them in battles.

In 3D Battle Mode, players battle Pokémon to become legendary fighters within the Colosseum. Pokémon fans can battle against up to four friends in two-player versus two-player combat. In multiplayer battles, one player uses the GameCube controller and additional players are linked to the game via their Game Boy Advance systems and Pokémon Ruby or Pokémon Sapphire game. Connect up your Game Boy Advance consoles via the Nintendo link cable to maximise the multi-player action and take the competition to the next level by inputting your commands in secret into your handheld screen.

All battles commence within the Colosseum arena with battle backdrops ranging from huge industrial stadiums to lush waterfall-filled stages.  Pokémon Colosseum contains Pokémon characters from previous titles including everyone’s favourites Groudon and Kyogre. So grab your mates and get gaming with Pokémon!

Pokémon Colosseum will be available across Europe from 14th May 2004 for the estimated retail price of around 60 Euros.

TalkBack / European Metal Gear: Twin Snakes Release Date
« on: January 23, 2004, 04:27:56 AM »
The "definite" European release date for Twin Snakes is set to be March 26th.

MARCH 26TH FOR THE TWIN SNAKES

<small>Konami of Europe’s first Metal Gear Solid title for Nintendo GameCube gets definite release date

Konami of Europe has announced that Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes – the unique collaboration between Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and Nintendo's development legend Shigeru Miyamoto – will be released on March 26th. It marks the first appearance for the series on Nintendo GameCube, and is already being described as one of the games of the year for the Nintendo format.

Encased in packaging featuring an exclusive image by lead artist, Yoji Shinkawa, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is the result of a unique alliance between series creator Hideo Kojima, Nintendo development icon Shigeru Miyamoto and Canadian development studio, Silicon Knights. Working closely together, this enviable array of talent have updated the original story first seen in the PSone version of Metal Gear Solid, and bringing it to life using the landmark graphics and gameplay elements seen in the seminal Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for PlayStation 2.

Cast as Solid Snake, an expert covert agent, the player must help the legendary hero infiltrate an Alaskan nuclear missile disposal facility now under terrorist control. The base has been seized by the FOXHOUND group who are planning to use the weapons within to hold the world to ransom. Snake's mission is thus simple: enter the base, eliminate the terrorist cell and neutralise the nuclear threat – a weapon codenamed Metal Gear.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes retains the many gameplay elements that have seen the series hailed as one of the all-time video game classics. Players have total control of Snake's many skills as they enter and stealthily make their way through the base. As such, Snake can sneak behind guards, stow them in lockers, use silenced weapons to take out targets from afar, and use all his covert skills to bypass security systems, patrolled areas and to enter restricted areas. Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes also incorporates elements not available in the original PSone game, with the GameCube game offering a first-person view of the action, the ability to hang from ledges, and to open, climb into and search lockers.

The Nintendo game also benefits from specially created CG sequences, overseen by renowned Japanese film director Ryuhei Kitamura and utilising the latest in motion-capture techniques. Similarly, all the voices heard in the game were re-recorded afresh, using Snake artist David Hayter and members of the original cast once more.

With Solid Snake's popularity cemented by an incredible response to the new game at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is already being hailed as one of the most significant GameCube titles of 2004. With its stunning visuals, incredible gameplay and cinematic soundtrack, the close working relationship between Kojima-san, Miyamoto-san and Silicon Knights has produced a worthy addition to the Solid Snake mythos.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes will be released for Nintendo GameCube - on two discs - on March 26th.</small>  Reply Here

TalkBack / 2003 UK Game Sales Highest Ever
« on: January 07, 2004, 10:01:47 PM »
The games industry in the UK is continuing to grow, with the highest sales ever recorded last year of 1.26 billion pounds spent on software.

VIDEO GAMES CONTINUE TO GROW

ELSPA, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association, today announced the continued buoyant growth in the UK computer and video games market. UK sales of leisure software products reached an all time high in 2003, with values reaching £1.26 billion, an increase of 7.1 per cent over the previous year.

Roger Bennett, director general of ELSPA, said: “Once again, the UK industry has seen its most successful year ever. The UK video games industry sales have been on the rise for the last 20 years – it topped the £2 billion mark for the first time in 2002 and this year, once the final figures for all hardware are compiled, will see that dynamic trend continue.

“2003 has also provided substantial evidence of the way video games have been integrated into mainstream entertainment culture, such as the very first prime-time terrestrial TV awards show, the first official ‘book’ created by Ladbrokes and the launch of a dedicated monthly gaming supplement in that British media bastion, The Sunday Times. I am confident we, as an industry, will continue to drive initiatives – Game Stars Live, European Games Network, London Interactive - that will garner new audiences from every demographic and age group.”

Christmas was a particularly strong selling period with a record 15 titles achieving platinum status (300,000 units) in the 10 weeks leading up to week 52 and Electronic Arts’ FIFA 2004 reaching double platinum status (600,000 units) in the same period.

Electronic Arts contributed substantially to the ongoing growth cycle, with 14 titles in the top 40 for the year, including five titles in the top 10. The top 40 product mix featured six sports titles, 10 titles based on film and TV franchises (including Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, The Matrix, Finding Nemo and The Simpsons), while FIFA 2004 was the overall winner.

The presence of three next generation consoles – PS2, Xbox and GameCube – helped to increase software sales with the majority of best sellers being multi-format. Sales for the older generation console, PSOne, were still strong with titles such as Dancing Stage (Konami) charting at number 21 for the year and Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance performed well across a wide range of titles with Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire both in the top 40.

Despite no new home consoles being released in 2003, console sales stayed steady at four million units, with the PS2 installed base topping the five million mark in the UK. The impact of the Game Boy Advance SP and the Nokia N-Gage are still to be evaluated.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes will be released for Nintendo GameCube - on two discs - on March 26th.

YBCA PRESENTS AN INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA EXHIBITION EXPLORING THE HISTORY AND INFLUENCE OF COMPUTER GAME CULTURE AND

THE UNIQUE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COMPUTER GAMES AND ART

Bang the Machine: Computer Gaming Art and Artifacts January 17–April 4, 2004 YBCA Galleries

SAN FRANCISCO, November 24, 2003—Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents an interactive multimedia exhibition that explores the history and influence of computer game culture and the extraordinary relationship between interactive computer games and contemporary art. On view in our Galleries from January 17 through April 4, 2004, Bang the Machine: Computer Gaming Art and Artifacts is produced in partnership with the How They Got Game Project of the Stanford Humanities Laboratory, which will concurrently present the exhibit, Fictional Worlds, Virtual Experiences: Storytelling and Computer Games, at the Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University.

Bang the Machine: Computer Gaming Art and Artifacts explores a wide variety of subject areas, from the relationship between computer games and military simulations to contemporary features and cross-fertilization with artistic endeavors. The primary exhibition, entitled Game Scenes, will feature the U.S. Army’s computer game, America’s Army, developed by the MOVES Institute of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. America’s Army is a game designed by the military so that “young Americans could explore soldiering in the US Army” and “advance through progressive experiences ranging from basic training at Fort Benning, Ga., to Special Forces Assessment and Selection at Fort Bragg, N.C.”  Guest curated by Henry Lowood, Curator for History of Science & Technology Collections at the Stanford University Libraries, the installation at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will include artifacts simulating a battlefield environment like those in the game, created by Ignited Minds studio for the Electronic Entertainment Exposition. The CounterGaming areas of Game Scenes will present a wide range of game content and narrative media developed using game software. The exhibition will also feature a collection of machinima, animated movies made using game software.

Game Scenes will showcase the work of a wide variety of national and international artists whose works are heavily influenced by computer games and associated technology. The artists’ projects include:

Katherine Isbister and Rainey Straus will construct a virtual recreation of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Galleries in the online gaming environment of The Sims Online. The Sims Online is an interactive online environment where players can recreate their lives, families, friends and life choices. Isbister and Strauss will recreate the look of The Sims Online environment in the physical space of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts complex. Visitors will be able to sit in the Galleries and access the game online, thereby occupying the virtual and physical space of the YBCA Galleries simultaneously.

Janek Simon will create an interactive installation of the Carpet Invaders, which includes a floor projection of a videogame that simulates the early Space Invaders. The modular components of the videogame are made to resemble Afghani rug designs which reference weapons and warfare.

Fur will present their interactive Painstation console, whose software is based on the early videogame, Pong. Players use their right hands to control a bat on screen, and must keep their left hand on the console’s “pain execution unit” to avoid ending the game. If a player’s bat misses a ball, his/her left hand suffers the consequences through the application of heat, electric shocks or a quick whipping.

Jon Haddock will present a series of his Screenshots, drawings shown from an isometric perspective which draw on the visual vocabulary of computer games. Each drawing stages a socio-political event, (such as the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. at the Lorraine Motel) used interchangeably with fictionalized events (such as the picnic scene from The Sound of Music).

C-level will present Waco Resurrection, its first chapter of Endgames, a new 3D multiplayer computer game series based on alternative utopias and apocalyptic moments. In Waco Resurrection, each player enters the game as a David Koresh (wearing a real-life Koresh mask) and must defend the Branch Davidian compound against “internal intrigue, skeptical civilians, rival Koresh and the inexorable advance of government agents.”

Italian artist Mauro Ceolin will present a series of portraits of videogame designers who have created the most inventive and original titles, and portraits of electronic musicians who sample old computer game music in their dance mixes.

Acclaimed Bay Area graphic artist and graphic designer Amy Franceschini will create lemon-tree powered handheld games (such as Nintendo and Sony Playstation).

Los Angeles-based artist Brody Condon will present 600 Polygon John Carmack, a 5-foot tall sculpture of legendary programmer John Carmack. The sculpture is not a portrait of Carmack, but a portrait of the low polygon game avatar of him that he developed for this game, Quake III.

Acclaimed digital artists Paul Kaiser and Shelley Eshkar, who have collaborated with artists such as Merce Cunningham and Bill T. Jones, will create a room-sized installation entitled Arrival.

New York-based artist Paul Johnson and Korean-based artist Sunny Kim present Budaechigae, a collaborative videogame project (Budaechigae or “army soup” is a spicy dish popularized during the famine conditions of the 1950-53 Korean War). In this game, Kim and Johnson create individual videogame characters or avatars which function as self portraits. Although both artists have designed the appearance, role and behavior of their respective avatars in advance, the relationship between them will evolve over the course of the exhibition. Each character’s behavior has been created without consultation between the artists.

Game Commons, an exhibition “plug-in” developed by the online floating work-space, Kingdom of Piracy (), will accompany the exhibition. Game Commons comprises three new artworks that are realized online, along with site-specific gallery installations, curated links and an open communication platform on the website. It celebrates game culture as an open sphere of exchange, interplay and re-appropriation. Game Commons connects the community values of game culture with notions of digital or creative commons that have recently reinvigorated the debate about the future shape of the information society. was launched at Ars Electronica 2002 and keeps re-inventing itself in different arenas and on different platforms. is co-curated by Shu Lea Cheang, Armin Medosch and Yukiko Shikata.

The exhibition will also feature Club Busta Buena, an interactive videogame created by the youth from YBCA’s education program, Young Artists at Work. Through the exploration of drawing human anatomy, character creation, sculpture, painting, computer generated three-dimensional modeling, texturing and animation, each student will create an original textured, animated character model for their 3-dimensional game utilizing Studio Max software. The videogame, with code written by Dierdre Dixon, will allow Gallery visitors to experience distinct club rooms where they can test their dance skills against the coolest dancers in virtual space. The music featured in Club Busta Buena is the Young Artists original work from The DJ Project, created over Summer 2003.

TalkBack / London Interactive Announced For 2004
« on: November 21, 2003, 05:50:26 AM »
The London Interactive gaming festival is to take place 30th August – 5th September 2004.

GAMES COME TO LONDON

London Interactive Announced; Week-long Games Festival in Capital City; Discussions with London Mayor's Office under way; ELSPA drives Euro focus on London

Friday 21st November 2003/... ELSPA, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association, is to launch London Interactive, a week-long festival of gaming to support the European Games Network and Game Stars Live. London Interactive will take place between 30th August – 5th September 2004.

Taking as its theme the four elements of play, interact, experience and live, London Interactive will be the ultimate festival of computer and video games with both large scale consumer activities and investment in industry initiatives. It will position London as THE centre for the gaming industry in Europe and will use video games as the tool to help generate visitors to the capital.

Discussions have taken place with representatives from the Mayor of London's Office and Visit London (formerly the London Tourist Board) about how to help support London Interactive.

Mayor Ken Livingstone commented: "The creative industries, including computer and video games, are major contributors to London's economy. It is important to promote these industries and to create conditions in which they can thrive. A London-wide festival of gaming could offer an excellent means to promote computer and video gaming to investors as well as the public and to underpin the capital's role as a centre for gaming."

David Hornby, Commercial Director of Visit London, added: "Visit London is delighted to support such an event. The creative industries are the fastest growing industries in London followed by the growth in the visitor economy. Events such as this provide an ideal backdrop for visiting London for both business and leisure."

Roger Bennett, director general of ELSPA, said: "As our industry grows in prominence within the creative industries, developing our own equivalent to the London Film Festival, London Fashion Week or In The City, is both logical and desired."

Meanwhile discussions are also under way with the DTi seeking support to develop a series of inward missions for trade delegations from around the world to visit London in the week of London Interactive and European Games Network. These trade missions will provide the opportunity to showcase the benefits of London as a pan-European distribution base, thus encouraging inward investment and the creation of jobs.

Bennett added: "There's a lot of hard work ahead of us to bring this to fruition but we are confident in our expectation of seeing London reinforce its position as the European hub of gaming, not just for the industry but for the general public as well."

Read about the marketing campaign for Europe this Christmas that Nintendo will spend 35M Euros on.

35 Million Euro European Marketing Campaign

Nintendo unveils innovative pre Christmas Marketing Campaign

Nintendo is set to reveal an enormous and hugely impactful marketing campaign in the run up to Christmas. In a far-reaching and innovative campaign, Nintendo are investing 35 million Euros across Europe in high impact marketing activities. The campaign is expected to drive NINTENDO GAMECUBE sales, create noise around the Game Boy Advance SP, drive software sales and focus on some of Nintendo’s top games in the key Christmas period.

NINTENDO GAMECUBE Price Reduction

On 3rd October Nintendo announced that they were reducing the price of the NINTENDO GAMECUBE to a fantastic price of around £79.  Sales of the console soared instantly, with 10 times more consoles being sold in the first week of the new price across Europe. This move will ensure a dramatic increase in software and hardware sales in the run up to Christmas and beyond.

This new price point initiative has been supported by a major TV campaign and a heavy weight radio campaign across the UK and will continue to be supported by an online marketing presence over the next eight weeks.

NINTENDO GAMECUBE software

Nintendo has an impressive and exciting software line up for the NINTENDO GAMECUBE in the run up to Christmas, with the much anticipated arrival of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, F-Zero GX, 1080° Avalanche and Mario Party 5.  Nintendo are also launching an exclusive Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Limited Edition Pak, containing a NINTENDO GAMECUBE, a copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! plus a Special Five Game limited edition ‘The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition’ disc.

In the UK the launch of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! will be supported by a heavyweight TV campaign targeting kids and families, plus activity driving the Mario Kart hardware bundle, print advertising and PR. In addition, in-store activity surrounding Mario Kart: Double Dash!! will be huge, with in-store playable demos, in store FSDUs and posters and impressive semi permanent displays in retailers across the UK. F-Zero GX, 1080° Avalanche and Mario Party 5 will also have print, online, in store and PR support throughout the UK.

As part of Nintendo UK’s biggest kids campaign of the year, it has partnered with Cartoon Network to create “Base Nintendo”.  Running continuously for four months, Base Nintendo is the place for kids to go online and get all the latest news, clues and action for the exciting NINTENDO GAMECUBE and Game Boy Advance games coming out this winter.

Base Nintendo ads will appear on air and online in the UK, informing kids of what is new each week. Kids can go online at www.basenintendo.co.uk and interact with the games with downloadable screenshots, movies, as well as games, hints and great competitions.

Player’s Choice

The diverse Player’s Choice range for NINTENDO GAMECUBE includes Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Starfox Adventures, Mario Party 4, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Pikmin as well as James Bond Nightfire, Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets, Medal of Honor: Frontline and FIFA Football 2003 from EA.  Only available for NINTENDO GAMECUBE, the new range of titles offer something for everyone at the unbeatable price of around £19.99.   In the UK the Player’s Choice range will also be a primary marketing focus, with TV, internet, radio, and PR supporting the launch of the key Nintendo games in the range.

Game Boy Advance SP

The Game Boy Advance SP is receiving full marketing support this Christmas with heavyweight print and online campaigns for both the console and the software titles.

Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 will be a key game for kids this Christmas and will be promoted through a four week heavy cinema campaign in ‘Finding Nemo’ along with kids print, gaming print and online as part of Base Nintendo. Pokémon will continue to be a key focus for Nintendo as it promotes Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, as well as Pokémon Pinball in the run up to Christmas. Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire will be supported by kids TV, print and online presence, also part of Base Nintendo.

Launching on 28th November 2003 are Pokémon Ruby and the Pokémon Sapphire Super Paks.  Each Super Pak contains a limited edition branded Pokémon Game Boy Advance SP, a branded Pokémon Game Boy Advance SP case and a copy of either Pokémon Ruby or Pokémon Sapphire dependent on which Super Pak is purchased.

Promoting a range of ‘intelligent’ games for the Game Boy Advance to ‘strategic thinkers’ will also play a key part of the strategy. Golden Sun 2: The Lost Age, Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance will be supported in gaming print, men’s lifestyle, film media and highbrow media. There will also be a new Game Boy Advance range advert appearing in men’s lifestyle media including FHM, GQ and The Face.

Third Party Support

A heavy weight third party support campaign is also in place to drive awareness of key third party publisher game releases for the NINTENDO GAMECUBE. Games included in the campaign are Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg from SEGA, Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike from LucasArts and Viewtiful Joe from Capcom. There is also a marketing support campaign with EA for Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup, The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King, The Sims Bustin’ Out, FIFA Football 2004 and Medal of Honor Rising Sun.
