TalkBack / All 150 Black & White Pokémon English Names Revealed
« on: February 03, 2011, 05:45:24 PM »

A list that has been circulating the Internet is coming true so far.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/25061

In recent days, a complete list of English names for the 150 Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Black & White has been making the rounds on the Internet.

So far, each name on the list has matched exactly with Nintendo's official reveals through mediums such as episode announcements for Cartoon Network, screenshots, and official press material. Additionally, Official Nintendo Magazine UK's playthrough blog and videos of the English language version of Pokémon Black has further corroborated the list, proving each name to be correct so far.

Specialist Pokémon website Serebii.net are confident enough in the list that they have released it in full and changed every reference on their website to match. Their list can be found here. Please be aware that it may be regarded as containing spoilers.

I liked volleyball, it's a coinathon. At least it was when I last played it. Getting coins was more relevant than actual volleyball, but the whole game felt like Mario Tennis New Play Control to me if in Mario Tennis the object was to collect all the coins on the court and the tennis had little relevance.

TalkBack / 3DS Has Power Saving Mode for Dark Pixels
« on: January 27, 2011, 12:17:50 AM »

Even on full brightness, battery life can be extended by 10 to 20 percent.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24955

In the latest edition of Iwata Asks, our omnipresent Nintendo President tells about the power-saving mode for the Nintendo 3DS. It uses less power for the backlight when the pixels themselves are darker shades.

Internal testing with the mode off gave the three-hour battery life figure we have all come to know, but when this power-save mode was enabled, the team got 10 to 20 percent more battery life when the backlight was on the brightest setting. With the lowest brightness, the battery lasted five hours, and turning this power-save mode on or off did not make much of a difference.

Another test, with the brightness turned all the way up, showed that turning off 3D could make the battery last 25 percent longer. This would increase the battery life to 3.75 hours on the brightest setting.

Ryuji Umezu from the Research and Engineering Department, one of Iwata's interviewees, also told us that WiFi communications do not have a big impact since they are intermittent, but local multiplayer can decrease playtime by around 10% when the system is on full brightness.

Technical specifications on Nintendo's website previously revealed the 3DS battery life to be between three to five hours.

Nintendo will be responsible for sales, distribution, and marketing in Europe and Australia.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24947

Nintendo and Capcom have signed a distribution agreement for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition on the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo will handle sales, marketing, and distribution of the launch title, which is due for release on March 25 for Europe. The distribution agreement additionally covers Australia. Capcom remains as the publisher of the game.

One difference in Nintendo-distributed games for Wii and DS is that they are eligible for Club Nintendo Stars, and the box includes a card with a redemption code.

Recent games under a similar arrangement include Monster Hunter Tri, Ghost Trick, and Okamiden.

TalkBack / Epic Mickey Developers Experiencing Lay-Offs
« on: January 24, 2011, 07:59:48 PM »

Not all is well at the Disney-owned Junction Point.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24932

Junction Point, Warren Spector's studio owned by Disney, are experiencing lay-offs. The team was responsible for the development of Disney Epic Mickey, released in November last year.

Epic Mickey was the first game the company developed for Disney following their acquisition in 2007. The company was formed by Spector and several other former Ion Storm employees.

Reports are coming in from fellow developers offering sympathy on Twitter, collected by Eurogamer. An official statement has not yet been released.

Just days ago, Disney reported the shut down of the Vancouver-based Propaganda Games following the conclusion of Tron: Evolution. The studio downsized in October 2010 when the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada Of The Damned game was cancelled.

UPDATE: CNBC is reporting that as much as half of the 700-employee company are affected. Warren Spector is said to be still employed at Junction Point.

TalkBack / UK 3DS Best Pre-Order Prices
« on: January 24, 2011, 12:17:47 PM »

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/deal/24913

Nintendo UK are advising that gamers pre-order the Nintendo 3DS at their favourite retailer with a deposit, as this will help with forecasting. They say that this means they can ensure that enough units are shipped to match demand, as if everyone tries to get a console last-minute, they may have shipped all of their stock, and so there will not be enough consoles in the initial supply.

Deals on offer currently include:

Game Gears - Blue and Black models for £194.99. However they do not appear to be taking active pre-orders any longer, instead there is an e-mail contact option for when there is more information.

ShopTo - Blue and Black models for £199.85. This is a limited-time promotion price for pre-orders. They do also warn that they cannot confirm delivery dates of pre-orders until they receive more information from Nintendo.

HMV - Pre-order price is £229.99. If you trade-in a DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL, you get an extra £20 on the trade-in value when it's put towards a 3DS pre-order before March 19. This is around £60-110 value depending on which console you trade in.

Zavvi - Pre-order for £217.85 to receive a free executive case.

Launch titles are almost certain to be the following with prices ranging from £24.99-39.99.

Nintendogs + Cats (Toy Poodle & New Friends)
Nintendogs + Cats (French Bulldog & New Friends)
Nintendogs + Cats (Golden Retriever & New Friends)
Asphalt 3D
Lego Star Wars 3: The Clone Wars
Pro Evolution Soccer 3D
Rayman 3D
Super Monkey Ball 3D
Super Street Fighter IV 3D
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars 3D
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D

Ordered already? Seen a better deal? Let us know in Talkback.

TalkBack / Nintendo of Europe Expects to Ship 900,000 3DS Launch Units
« on: January 23, 2011, 08:29:42 PM »

The target sales for the first year are four to five million.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24902

Nintendo of Europe are expected to ship 900,000 units for the first three weeks of the Nintendo 3DS launch.

For the first 12 months following the launch, four to five million consoles are expected to be sold across all European regions.

These sales numbers are greater than for the original Nintendo DS, which had one million units sold within the first four months, and reached 3.8 million after ten months.

These figures come from retail and publisher activities surrounding Nintendo's event in Amsterdam earlier this week. Stock volumes and ball-park figures for long term sales targets were compiled by MCV from their sources.

TalkBack / Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition Roundtable Transcript
« on: January 23, 2011, 01:26:01 AM »

Ono-san's comments, game information, and more.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/24898

Below is a full, sometimes paraphrased, transcript from Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono's presentation at the Capcom roundtable at the Nintendo 3DS Preview Event in Amsterdam. There are details of download play, StreetPass figurine battles, and the touch screen controls.

Moderator: We are delighted today to welcome both our guests from Capcom. This is going to be a presentation in two parts, first of all we have Mr. Ono, who you all know, who will talk about Super Street Fighter IV, and then we will ask a few questions. Then Mr. Kawata will talk about Resident Evil: The Mercenaries and after that we will have a few questions as well. So, Mr. Ono. *applause*

Yoshinori Ono (via translator): It's really cold in here! *laughter* Really, until yesterday, I wouldn't have thought that I would be presenting in such an environment (Note: the event took place in a converted aircraft hangar).

How did you like the big presentation earlier? Was it fun to watch, did you enjoy it? *applause* I think it was a kind of a bad version of George Clooney on stage (Note: he is referring to Laurent Fischer, Nintendo of Europe MD of Marketing and PR's speech at the earlier press confernce) so that was a little bit boring.

I'd like to share with you a little bit more in detail about Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. There are 35 characters/fighters in the game, as I have mentioned. Some of you may be asking is it the same as for the Japanese arcades, basically it's the worlds that you are familiar with on the Street Fighter games that are out in Europe. Probably the follow-up question for that would be, "But when's the arcade version coming to Europe?" And frankly speaking, I will not answer this question. *laughter*

The above three costumes are unlocked from the beginning when you start Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition on your Nintendo 3DS (Note: Ryu is shown in three different costumes). They are free of charge; they are included. I think this is different to the machines where you actually have to pay to get them. They're free, did you get that? *applause*

Obviously, Street Fighter is about fighting so you will have to fight. So basically, all the game modes that you are familiar with, all of these will be available in the palm of your hand on the Nintendo 3DS so please assume that what you are used to is also included.

When we are talking about Internet play, online versus battle, you will not have to worry about finding a suitable partner on the Internet or going into complicated selection modes or screens, the game software will find a suitable partner for you on the Internet so it will be very easy to use. Online versus battles will be global, so you will be playing against some people in Japan or North America, it will be worldwide online battle. Actually, last week we did a communication test with people from Nintendo Japan, Nintendo America, Nintendo Europe joining in a test play, and I am happy to report that it works very well. It's obviously very great for me to fight against Nintendo people and win.

For local wireless play we have a very similar setup to Pokemon, so it's very easy to use to play against people who are close to you.

Have many of you tried Super Street Fighter IV 3D edition over there in the gameplay area? Actually, before you start the battle, even if one person selects 2D and the other person selects 3D they can still fight with each other.

Then there's StreetPass, and we've really put a lot of effort into making this a good feature. Actually, using this feature is very simple, you just select the figurines, make a good combination of abilities, set them on your Nintendo 3DS with StreetPass and then more or less automatically you'll be battling. I think what I didn't mention earlier today is that actually, with these figurines you'll also be able to exchange them, trade them, and download additional figures so I think this can be something you will really enjoy for a long time.

But I think even with all these features, I think there are still going to be some people who say, "I'm not going to buy it". Please raise your hand if you are not going to buy the game. *room is quiet* Thank you for your courage! And for this kind of person, we have added a feature that I will now explain.

So if you're not going to buy the game, please take your Nintendo 3DS and go somewhere close to someone who has the game and is playing it. Then there's a download version', so using DS Download Play, if I don't have the game, I can download a version and then we can fight. The special thing is that if I send the download version to him, and you, then I quit and go home, the really special thing is that you and him will be able to continue playing the game. I think when we created this feature, we had in mind that, actually, we want a lot of people to be able to enjoy StreetPass on Nintendo 3DS and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, and I think this feature will allow a lot of people actually give it a try and see what it does. So I thnk that once you've tried it, you will also buy the game.

Thank you very much! *applause*

Q&A

Question: I have a question regarding the download version of the game: What is the difference compared to the full version?

Ono: Of course, if the download version was the same as the full version, then I think Capcom would go bankrupt! *laughter* That was a joke, obviously, but there's also the technical limitation with how much data we can actually send by WiFi for Download Play. So, the limit is the character will be Ryu and secondly, there will only be one stage. So if you play a scene, but you think I want to play as Chun Li, then sorry, you will have to buy the game!

Totalvideogames.com: I was playing it over in the games area; you have got Ultras, Supers, and Specials all on the touch screen. Are you worried you're taking away the prime challenge that motivates Street Fighter players?

Ono: I guess you're a fan of the Street Fighter series and you play it a lot? Actually, with people like you in mind, we've crated a mode where you can take out the touch screen controls. Then for online versus battle, there is a mode that only people who have turned off the touch screen controls can join. You can search only for people who have turned the touch screen off.

So if you go back to Street Fighter for Super Nintendo, that's only 20 years ago. There are all these old guys who say my thumb hurts, I can't even move anymore. These are the kinds of people we were considering and why we added the touch screen mode.

Cubed3: I was just wondering, you're trying to make this more accessible to a wide audience, did you ever consider working with Nintendo to include some of their characters in the game?

Ono: I would really like you to raise this opinion and suggestion with Nintendo Japan, please message Mr Sakurai, and I would be happy to have Nintendo vs Capcom!

Eurogamer: When is the arcade edition coming out in Europe?

Ono: It's still a secret today!

Moderator: Thank you Mr. Ono! *applause*

I'd describe it as more at the screen than out of the screen. The dog's paws are kind of perched "just over" the imaginary boundary between screen and well, air. To activate this, you have to bring the screen fairly close to your face, and that affects the image, too.

Navi is basically as far forward as things can be in the same position, dungeons are generally at a "normal" level, and then the scene where Link first approaches the Deku Tree to talk, the whole Tree layer is well in the background.

Not a lot of stuff pops out at you. You'll have some things floating in the foreground. It's not going to be like at a 3D movie where Jaws leaps out at you.

The slider varies how much the effects I've mentioned are shown. So in most cases, how rounded the character models look, how sloped the ground goes out towards the distance.

TalkBack / Super Monkey Ball 3D Impressions
« on: January 22, 2011, 06:51:28 PM »

The monkeys return as they go after their bananas once more.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/24858

I only looked at this demo briefly; there were a couple of the mini-game modes available to try. On selecting a game, the character selection screen came up with all four monkeys from the first game, as well as four more, and eight empty slots for even more characters.

Monkey Fight is completely different to how I remembered it. It now takes place on stages, Super Smash Bros. style, with the appropriate running, jumping, and fighting controls mapped to the 3DS buttons, including L&R triggers. Moving around is fairly straight forward -- you go through platforms from the bottom, and when you jump you can stay in mid-air for a few seconds to fight your opponents. Walking around uses the Circle Pad.

The object of Monkey Fight is to collect bananas that generate in various places around the stage. Hitting your opponents will knock bananas out of them that they have previously collected. The controls were a little tricky at first due to the gameplay style, and it's hard to get anywhere just mashing one or two buttons. There didn't seem to be many item pickups, but now and then a golden barrel would appear, which would power-up the player who hit it several times, similar to the Smash Ball of SSB.

This mode wasn't a lot of fun against CPU opponents so multiplayer support will be essential. Then it could be considered as a good distraction.

TalkBack / 3DS Launches with Biggest UK Campaign Ever
« on: January 22, 2011, 03:31:03 PM »

Experience tour to start within the next three weeks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24847

To bring 3D into the mainstream, Nintendo UK are planning the biggest-ever Nintendo console launch for the Nintendo 3DS. The focus will be all the 3D content that the handheld will offer, including video delivery from partner companies.

Highlights of the launch campaign are an experience tour set to begin within the next three weeks, and "tease and reveal" TV that could possibly rival the huge television advertising campaign of last winter.

TalkBack / Nintendo 3DS Impressions
« on: January 21, 2011, 08:04:15 PM »

All about the screen.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/24841

There seems to be concern about eye fatigue when using the 3DS for an extended period of time. From my experience, I would think that my arms would be tired long before my eyes were.

Looking at the Nintendo 3DS promo videos, you'll notice that all the models are holding the console in exactly the same position and exactly the same distance away. That's because there is only one angle to hold the 3DS at in order to see the 3D effects properly. Succeed with this, and you will have the sharpest of images. Avert your eyes even slightly, and things start to float where they should not, layers separate, things double up, and you lose the perfectly crisp image. Looking at the screen like that even for a short while is uncomfortable, but it is quite easy to slip into such a view.

3D images are really, really sharp, in part thanks to the 3D making round things look more spherical. This is the part that people are saying you can't appreciate until you see it. When it's done well, it enhances the character models, rather than just adding a layered effect with background and foreground components. The inside of the Deku Tree looks curved and smooth. It's a subtle enhancement, and that's the difference.

Turning off the 3D, you lose the life-like quality and crisp, razor sharp, yet smoothly joined edges, but the viewing angle increases accordingly.

While I didn't see anyone else do this, because of the strict viewing angle, I had to adjust the way I held the console to play Kid Icarus: Uprising. Your left hand controls the Circle Pad and L-trigger, as well as holding the DS. Most of the time, you can just hold down the trigger and that's fine, but if you want to charge or stop shooting, you have to take your finger off the button. In your right hand, you hold the stylus pen-style, so you're meant to hold the 3DS with your left hand supporting the console completely. I couldn't keep it balanced while having to press L, so I hooked the last two fingers of my right hand under the system in order to keep it stable. Basically, I had to work around the exact issue that Sakurai previously suggested.

TalkBack / 3DS eShop to Be Added on Launch Day in Europe
« on: January 21, 2011, 04:39:09 PM »

The system firmware will update out of the box for eShop support. UPDATED with NOA comment!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24837

Nintendo of Europe confirmed to Eurogamer that while the eShop and Internet browser functionality will not be pre-installed on the firmware for launch systems, it will be released on launch day as a system update.

Nintendo's 3DS preview event revealed that an Internet browser and eShop featuring DSiWare, 3DS download titles, and Virtual Console Game Boy/Game Boy Color would be part of the Nintendo 3DS functionality, but they would not be a part of the system at launch. The features would be installed through a firmware update available during the "launch window."

It is expected that Virtual Console titles Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX and Super Mario Land will be available once the eShop is active.

UPDATE: NWR contacted Nintendo of America for an official comment. NOA Spokesperson Charlie Scibetta had this to say:

“Games and services offered by Nintendo can vary by region. Nintendo of America will release additional information about Nintendo eShop, including timing, content and pricing, at a later date.”

The game will have new missions and a character skills system, plus unannounced features.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24831

At the Capcom roundtable at the recent Nintendo 3DS preview event, Masachika Kawata, producer of the Resident Evil titles on 3DS stated that there is more content in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D that is yet to be announced.

When we asked how the 3DS title will turn the Resident Evil 4 and 5 bonus mode into more a complete game experience, Kawata responded that it is more of a full version of the mode with more characters. The difference between the  bonus mode and this game is the addition of missions. Not only do you have to clear the missions, but you have to complete them in specific ways. There is also a character-specific skill system that adds variety when compared to Mercenaries mode from the other games.

He finished by speaking of other systems and and features that are planned for the game that have not been announced yet, and asked for people to wait for the announcements.

TalkBack / Nintendogs + Cats Impressions
« on: January 20, 2011, 07:35:45 PM »

Nintendogs plus cats, minus bath time.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/24829

Nintendogs + Cats made an appearance in demo form once more. Since E3, cat interactivity has been added and a slightly larger selection of toys and accessories to test out, such as bouncy things, fancy collars, and sunglasses.

The dog and cat were onscreen at the same time. If they were both within camera range, when you clicked on the whistle icon the lower screen would change to show a silhouette of each pet. You could then you tap to call the one you wanted.

It was mentioned at the presentation that it is harder to make friends with the cats, but it wasn't apparent in the demo. Both pets were very happy as they were not set to be new pets. The cat bounced up to the screen, paws up, and accepted petting much like the original Nintendogs. The gestures for tricks worked on cats too, and I was able to get it to sit, lie down, and roll onto each side. It seems that the trick list for cats is less extensive than for dogs, and there may even be different cat-only tricks.

The depth introduced by 3D mode makes the game look more interesting and visually rich. The 3D is subtle, making the pets appear smoother and rounded off. Round things don't suffer from sharp edges, and actually look curved. The effect is exaggerated when throwing toys, such as when I tossed a bouncy mushroom into the distance.

Nintendogs + Cats was confirmed for Western release with three titles: Toy Poodle & New Friends, French Bulldog & New Friends, and Golden Retriever & New Friends (replacing Japan's Shiba & New Friends).

Rayman 3D among the European launch games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24818

Ubisoft has announced release dates for some of their confirmed launch window Nintendo 3DS titles for Europe.

The four titles launching with the system on March 25 are Asphalt 3D, Rayman 3D, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D.

Asphalt 3D is a racing title developed by Game Loft. Rayman 3D is a 3D version of Rayman 2, which was released on Dreamcast. Of the Tom Clancy titles, Shadow Wars is a turn-based tactics/strategy game played from a top-down perspective, and Splinter Cell 3D is a remake of Chaos Theory, the third game in the series.

A week later on April 1, two more games will follow. Rabbids 3D, which is a 2D platformer based on the Rabbids Travel Time games, and Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D, the latest in the series Combat of Giants series.

Ubisoft confirmed eight titles for the 3DS launch window at Nintendo's conference yesterday.

Original 3D animations, sport, and short-form 3D satellite video content depending on country partners.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/24779

Nintendo of Europe announced partnerships with media organisations to deliver 3D video content to the Nintendo 3DS at their press conference earlier today.

Turns out you can forget a gospel choir. Twice.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/24769

I'm sitting here now, charging all my electronics in preparation for tomorrow's jaunt to Amsterdam for what looks to be a huge launch event for the Nintendo 3DS.

I've been thinking back to Nintendo's last press conference in Europe. There can't have been all that many, and I don't really remember anything after The Nintendo Breakfast in 2002. The Nintendo Show 2001 was my first press conference, I'd just joined the former green-and-black themed Planet GameCube, as you can tell by the watermark. While reading about the press conference at The Nintendo Show in 2001, nearly a full decade ago, I realised that I may have forgotten about the gospel choir.

Gospel Choir 1

Again. This is something that first happened, or so I thought, at E3 2010. Following Activision's preview event/concert that replaced their show floor presence, we struggled to remember all of the components from a skateboard ramp from the ceiling that never came to fruition, to the heavily delayed start caused by Eminem's sound check, not forgetting the human-operated flamethrowers and indoor fireworks. "We forgot the gospel choir" became one of the catchphrases of the week among "Skittles" and "What is going on?"

Gospel Choir 2

What I also noticed was the premiere of the Pokemon Mini in 2001, and while not a huge exclusive, it gives some history of new announcements for Europe. With the long time between press conferences, what if the big event here is due to a simultaneous Western launch for the 3DS, where it is actually to be launched in Europe first (by a margin of two days, since our games are released on Fridays) and smiling Iwata comes out of nowhere to announce that? That could only be the best outcome.

A recent statement from Nintendo suggests that some Nintendo 3DS software titles may not work on consoles from another region due to languages, age rating, parental control functionality, local laws in each area, and network services. Nintendo has said that to provide the best gaming experience, the possibility exists for some software not functioning properly when used on hardware from another region.

While this doesn't so far necessarily mean a blanket policy where all titles will not be playable out of region, it does seem that some titles will indeed be region locked. The 3DS will be released in three variations, for Japan, North America, and Europe/Australia. The statement finishes with the fact that hardware and software packaging will be marked with guidance for regional compatibility.

Previous reports from Japan indicated the implementation of region locking, with an e-mail support newsletter saying that software purchased in Japan will only be playable on Japanese 3DS consoles.

More exact details are expected at tomorrow's 3DS preview events, with a live stream for the EU event on Nintendo of Europe's website.
