Stand up, stand up if you love Level-5 RPGs.

Inazuma Eleven is a slightly surreal experience due to the combination of differing themes and genres that aren't often seen together. Depending on what you take from the game or what you are most familiar with, it can seem to be everything from an RPG to Championship Manager. Not that I've played the latter, mind you, and it is of note that my football knowledge is extremely limited.
The story and presentation is clearly that of an RPG. You walk around the school and grounds finding treasure chests, running into random battles, following the development of the characters and storyline, gaining experience and leveling up, training to increase stats, and teaching moves to characters both through paying for them in training areas and by picking up teaching manuals. Practically every element of an RPG you could think of including randomly generated dungeons.

The game begins with several video cutscenes, but you see less of these as you progress. The videos are in an animated style, and it is a little strange to see these characters given English names and voices. There is also significant voice acting for text-based sections.
In terms of football matches, there are 4-a-side games that you encounter in random battles and training, which are around a minute long, and full-sized matches with a full team that must be completed to progress in the story, which are around five minutes long. Sometimes you have to complete a match in a particular way to be able to win and progress with the story. Characters are controlled one at a time by using the stylus to drag and create a path or tapping to shoot. The rest of your team will run around on their own, and you can direct several of them in quick succession to chase after the ball when you are defending. When trying to score, it is more important to keep passing the ball so you meet the opposing players less often.

When two players do meet, it becomes very much like one turn of an RPG battle. There is a choice of two standard moves with different attributes that can be used anytime and any special moves that you have acquired, which use up Technique Points (TP). These duels can occur between one or many players and the more players on your side of the duel, meaning they are near an oppponent, the higher your chance of winning and gaining possession of the ball. The outcome of the duel depends on the move chosen and player stats, as well as elemental type, of which there are four. These work in a rock-paper-scissors fashion, where air beats earth, earth beats fire, fire beats wood, and wood beats air. When special moves are used, you get the fullly animated, physically impossible depiction from the character. It's extremely out of place in a football match, and shows how integrated the RPG mechanic is.
![]() | ![]() |
In a full match, there are various options such as changing player formation, substituting players - handy when your players are drained of HP or TP, and there is half time and full time. It is important to direct your players and move the ball towards to goal quickly while avoiding opponents and choosing the right moves when you do meet. It's more strategy gameplay than arcade-style sport. Often, the story leads your team to learn a particular move that is required against the opposing team and that's the only move that will get past their defense successfully.
The 4-a-side games use your current story mode party, who walk around in a group following you much like an RPG party. Here the object is simply to score a goal first or gain possession of the ball. Winning a random battle consisting of such a game gives you experience and friendship points.

Overall, I feel half-in, half-out on this title. On one hand, I have no interest in football or real time strategy, making things difficult since it took me four gameplay hours to realise I could substitute players. However, the completionist feel of the RPG side pushes things along and at times, it can be quite exciting. It is certainly a very good game, and could be one of the year's best releases for DS, at least in Europe.
GDC ran me over like a truck, and somehow the message didn't get to me. I'll blame it on TEH CAT.
What would have been nice is if each picture featured a number with a list for everyone's name (where is TYP?).
That's us! With pictures to celebrate.

Access, a company who develops embedded software, will be providing a version of the NetFront browser for the Nintendo 3DS. The Internet browser will be available for download through a software update in May.
The Internet browser is currently in use in over one billion devices including mobile phones. Notable versions are those produced for Sony's PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable.
The Nintendo DS initially used an Opera provided and named Internet browser, which later lost the Opera name and was known simply as the Nintendo DS/DSi Browser.
First combine your game with AR cards, then marvel at the cute results.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25499
The AR Cards included with the Nintendo 3DS can be used with Nintendogs + Cats to provide adorable results. While we already know that you can use the "question block" card to display your pet in 3D wherever you please, each character card adds a hat to your Nintendog.
The Link card adds his signature blonde hair and green hat, the Samus cards covers the head completely with a visor, the Pikmin card adds a blue Pikmin cap, the Mario card, as expected, adds the Mario cap we have already seen in the game, and the Kirby card shows the pink blob perched right on top of the dog's head.
Destructoid has a full gallery of Nintendogs AR photos.

A playable demo of Okamiden is available to download from the Wii's Nintendo Channel to a Nintendo DS from today, for a limited period of time.
The demo lets you try the celestial brush on the DS touch screen, battle enemies, meet some of Chibiterasu's partners, and see a small part of the world of Okamiden.
Okamiden is a direct sequel to Okami on Wii and was released in Japan last September. It will be available in North America from March 15, Europe from March 18, and Australia from March 31.
Besides Target Shooting, there are plenty more games ready to play.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25461
The Nintendo 3DS is set to launch with six augmented reality titles, activated by printed cards included in the box.
Besides Target Shooting, which has been demonstrated extensively, a shooting, fishing, graffiti, Nintendo character display, and Mii display games are said to be built into the system, an anonymous source told Wired.com. The source went onto say that the list of titles was provided to them but then pulled, suggesting that there may be a change to the final lineup.
Each of the titles uses the 3DS cameras to show a 3D image of your surroundings and incorporate them into the game. The fishing game turns a table into a fishing pond, while the player tilts the console to lower and raise the rod to catch bigger and bigger fish. A second shooting game, AR Shot, plays similarly to billiards but adds obstacles by warping the displayed terrain. The graffiti program lets you paint, spray, and add special effects, such as fire to drawings, which can then be displayed and manipulated in 3D.
As revealed last week, the Star Pics program displays a statue of a Nintendo character, each using a different card, and different poses can be chosen with the face buttons. A separate program, Mii Pics, has the same function for Mii characters.
Nintendo characters are printed on each of the remaining cards.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25419
A photo of all six AR (augmented reality) cards included with the Nintendo 3DS reveals that the five cards, accompanying the previously revealed question mark block, feature Nintendo characters.
Rather than the yellow background of the question mark block, the background squares are blue. Mario, Link, Kirby, Samus, and Pikmin appear on the cards. In a post on NeoGAF, Alex Donaldson reported that the cards will show the characters perched on the card as virtual statues when activated in one of the six included AR modes, called "Star Viewer." Buttons on the 3DS change the statues' poses, and photos including the characters can be taken. Similar functionality exists using the question block card as a base to show Miis and Nintendogs in virtual 3D.
The series of unboxing photos for the handheld, including this AR card picture were posted on Twitter by UK retailer GAME. The photos have since been taken down.
The stolen data was allegedly used in an attempt to blackmail Nintendo.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25388
An unnamed man in Malaga, Spain was arrested for leaking stolen user data from Nintendo owners. It is unknown whether the data came from Nintendo's systems or a third party.
According to the Interior Ministry of Spain, the man obtained data on 4,000 Nintendo users and threatened Nintendo with a negligence report to Spain's data protection agency. When Nintendo did not respond, he began the data leak and intended to put the full user database online.
Nintendo could not give a comment on the situation due to the active investigation.
Commander Video will complete his journey this month in Bit.Trip Flux.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25375
Gaijin Games announced today that Bit.Trip Flux is coming to North America on February 28 and to Europe on February 25, on WiiWare. This is the final chapter in the series, and completes Commander Video's journey through the Bit.Trip games.
Bit. Trip Flux returns to the gameplay style of the first game, Bit.Trip Beat with a very similar format for controls and levels. There are several new additions and interesting features that add surprises within the levels. Checkpoints mean that game easier is to complete, and the game is in fact designed to be completable in one sitting, though playing successfully at the highest level is a much greater goal.
Which dog goes with which game in the Japanese releases.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25343
Nintendo opened their Japanese website for Nintendogs + Cats recently, showing a summary of what is known about the game so far, videos of the Japanese commercials, intriguingly cute pictures of cartridges, and a breed list for each game. There are lists of different dogs for each version of the game, and a summary about the cats.
Each game has nine dog breeds available at the start. Within the breeds there are slight differences in hair colour and body shape in each pet. The full set of 27 breeds can be unlocked through continuing play or through StreetPass. It's possible to have three puppies or kittens at one time in a room.
In terms of cats, there are three types and they are the same in all versions. The website shows a tabby, a Siamese, and a long-haired cat. As you progress through the game you earn the ability to bring up your own kittens. You can select from a handful of fur patterns. Kittens will take naps on the windowsill and between book cases, use their claws, and climb scratching posts. Cats will do their own thing regardless of you or your puppies, leading to a carefree coexistence.

Nothing more will be released beyond the tracks already announced.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25327
An FAQ page posted on the official DJ Hero website confirms that no further downloadable content for the Guitar Hero and DJ Hero series will be released beyond the track and mix packs already announced for February.
It also re-iterates yesterday's news that work on both series of games has stopped entirely due to the closure of Activision's music business division. Product sales of the current catalogue will continue, as will currently available DLC and customer support.
UK-based DJ Hero developer Freestyle Games issued the following statement confirming they are working with Activision on options going forward for the studio. David Osbourn, Jamie Jackson and Chris Lee (the studio's design director, creative director and commercial director, respectively), had the following to say: "No decisions have been taken at this stage… We appreciate everyone's support through this process and will be as open and transparent as possible as soon as we know more."

I might possibly have grabbed the last English language copy of Inazuma Eleven in the whole of England. Rogue early shipment? I can't tell for sure. Nintendo have yet to issue information on this title in the UK, but further details will follow shortly. The game was released in the rest of Europe a little over a week ago, but strangely enough, Nintendo UK seem to have other plans.
It looks like football, but that is more of the overall goal than the individual actions. You drag with the stylus to direct your player and use the menu options to tackle and so forth when you collide with another player, much like an RPG battle. The outcome depends on the experience and stats of each player. There is plenty of walking around and talking to other characters in the RPG sections, and lots of short video clips, as you'd expect in a Level-5 title. It's like watching Bleach with English accents.
I'll be playing the game a little later on but to tide you over, here is the theme tune.
Guitar Hero team among 500 layoffs confirmed in a financial report.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25138
The Guitar Hero team at Activision has been disbanded, and the 2011 game release has been cancelled. The series will continue only through downloadable content. This is due to declining sales in the music game genre. The DJ Hero series meets the same fate, as the entire music division will close down.
"Despite a remarkable 92 rating on DJ Hero 2, a well-regarded Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, as well as a 90-plus release from our most direct competitor, demand for peripheral based music games declined at a dramatic pace," CEO of Activision Publishing Eric Hirshberg stated.
Development of the shooter, True Crime: Hong Kong, due for release in 2011 has also been cancelled. There will not be a Tony Hawk game released this year as all music and skateboarding releases have been cancelled.
It is not clear yet exactly how the company-wide 500 employee cut will affect Guitar Hero developers Vicarious Visions or DJ Hero developers Freestyle Games. A resource refocus means that a new studio, Beachhead, will be created to handle online community, content and services for the Call of Duty games.

The below item, a "Ryu's Belt" lanyard and collectible lenticular card will be included with each order. It also includes a strap for the 3DS, or anything else you wish to attach to it.

Despite pre-orders being taken, the page does not confirm a release date for the game besides March 2011, though it is suspected as a launch title.
Miyamoto thought it would be fun to raise a pet on the television.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25096
The latest Iwata Asks is all about Nintendogs + Cats and interviews Shigeru Miyamoto and Hideki Konno about the title.
The trio explained why cats are secondary to dogs in the title, yet doubled the amount of work.
Nintendogs was intended for GameCube and Miyamoto said that he thought it would be fun to raise a pet on the television, but ultimately the Nintendo DS was found more suitable for this kind of game. The second Nintendogs game was also considered for a Wii release, but the lack of microphone meant that it was not possible. Still, the Nintendo 3DS provided the processing power for the fluffy fur textures that had to be excluded from the first release.
Lots of detail is included about the 3DS version of the game including AR card and Activity Log compatibility. Miyamoto also remembered that, initially, the idea was to have 16 versions of the game arranged in a 4x4 grid, so that when you walked into a store, you could choose the breed of dog you wanted. The sales department refused this setup, but allowed three versions, despite preferring to promote one single edition.
Choice Iwata quotes from the interview include:
Iwata: It had to be "+ cats"—like they come second.
You can brag about your pet. (laughs)
Iwata: Whoa! You can brag about your pet on a worldwide scale!
Konno: And then we photographed real puppies for the packages…they are really cute.
Iwata: (looking at a photo of a toy poodle) Yeah, this is breaking the rules! (laughs)
Konno: Yeah. (laughs) It wasn't easy finding this toy poodle!
Europe provided more sales than the US or Japan and Sonic was a success.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/25095
From the financial results up to the end of the third quarter for this financial year, Europe was the biggest Sega market with 5.95 million unit sales of home video game software. US sales were 5.77 million and Japanese sales totaled 1.9 million.
Of the 56 titles released over the same period, nine were released on Wii and nine for Nintendo DS. Sonic Colors performed well, with 1.85 million units sold on Wii and DS worldwide from its November release until the end of December.
Overall sales decreased compared to the same nine months of 2010, but profits were higher partly due to lower research and development, and production expenses. Operating income for the consumer business doubled from 1.4 billion yen ($17 million) to 2.8 billion yen ($34 million).
