TalkBack / Research Shows Sony Ahead In Video Games Market
« on: October 29, 2002, 11:13:19 AM »
A market research paper shows that Sony are clearly ahead of the market with Nintendo and Microsoft fighting for second place.

In-Stat/MDR have made available a market research paper analysing video game sales. The report includes comparisons of online plans by each company, forecasts for the next five years and survey results from consumers.

Sony Dominates Video Game Console Market While Nintendo and Microsoft Battle for Second Place

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., October 29, 2002 - With next generation consoles from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft now available in North America, Japan and Europe, the video game console market reached 31.8 million units shipped and revenues of nearly $7.4 billion in 2001, according to In-Stat/MDR. The high-tech market research firm reports that Sony is, and will remain the leader in this space, shipping its 40 millionth PlayStation 2 on September 19th, 2002.

"The video game console business is increasingly big business," says Brian O'Rourke, a Senior Analyst with In-Stat/MDR. "The year 2001 saw total video game revenue surpass movie box office receipts in the US for the second consecutive year, and shipments are expected to increase substantially in 2002." The introduction of plans for online gaming by all three console manufacturers has the potential to transform the market going forward. Sony and Nintendo are both pursuing an open online system, where the online game developer is responsible for administering the network infrastructure, and the consumer plays the online game over his own ISP, through a dial-up or broadband modem. Microsoft, on the other hand, has Xbox Live, which will be a closed service run entirely by Microsoft. Microsoft will run the servers and do all subscriber billing.

In-Stat/MDR also found that:

A recent survey of consumers revealed that nearly half of the respondents expressed interest in online console gaming. When asked what they would be willing to pay per month for online console gaming, well over half of the positive respondents were willing to pay $5 or more per month, while over one-third were willing to pay $10 or more per month.

A solid 25% of the survey respondents watch movies on their PS2, with 6% watching them on Xbox. Overall, nearly one-third watch movies on their video game consoles.

By early 2003, Nintendo should have released most of its franchise software titles, such as Mario and Zelda. Since Nintendo has always been driven by such franchise software, this holiday season should go a long way to determining the overall success of the GameCube.

The report, Video Game Consoles: Sony Dominates While Nintendo and Microsoft Battle for Second Place (#IN020041ME), includes a five-year forecast for each game console, in terms of both units and revenue, broken down by region. Quarterly shipment reviews and forecasts for each next-generation console in 2001 and 2002 are provided, also broken down by region. There is also a forecast for online console gaming subscribers through 2006. The three participants in this market, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, are profiled in depth in four areas: console business, online plans, marketing strategies, and shipment analysis. The report also includes results from In-Stat/MDR's annual Residential Technology Survey, which includes the responses of 961 random adult consumers on such issues as game consoles owned, likelihood to buy a console in the next year, interest in online console gaming and willingness to pay, and interest in watching movies on their consoles.

To purchase this report, or for more information, please contact Erin McKeighan at 480-609-4551; emckeighan@reedbusiness.com. The report price is $3,295 U.S. Dollars.

TalkBack / Lucas Arts announces UK release of Clone Wars
« on: October 29, 2002, 10:36:32 AM »
The game will be released a week earlier and is now launching in the same week as the DVD. What a coincidence!

LUCASARTS' STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS TO BE UNLEASED IN THE UK THE SAME WEEK AS STAR WARS: EPISODE II DVD IS RELEASED

The U.K. release date of the long awaited game inspired by the climactic battle from Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones is brought forward to 15th November 2002

London, U.K. - 28th October 2002 - LucasArts Entertainment Company LLC's UK distribution partner Activision today announced that the Nintendo® GameCubeTM version of Star Wars: The Clone Wars is to be released on November 15th, moving forward a week to coincide with the DVD release of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.

"Bringing battle sequences inspired by the movie onto consoles in the same week as the DVD launches was too good an opportunity to miss," explains Activision's U.K. Sales Director Bob Burridge. "The game captures the spirit of Attack of the Clones perfectly, and U.K. gamers will be able to steer the course of the Clone Wars just days after they bring the movie into their home."

Star Wars: The Clone Wars, developed for LucasArts by Pandemic Studios LLC, allows players to lead a clone army from the Republic against the menacing offensive threat of the Confederacy of Independent Systems and their leader Count Dooku, assuming the mantle of either Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi or Mace Windu. Their goal is to thwart the Confederacy from reassembling an ancient Sith weapon of mass destruction, placing the fate of the Republic in the hands of players, who must command their forces through 16 dramatic campaigns spanning six immense Star Wars worlds, from the desolate, ice-covered ruins of Rhen Var and war-torn plains of Geonosis, to the towering treetop cities of the Wookiee home planet of Kashyyyk.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars features innovative and well-detailed single and multiplayer campaigns coupled with a unique blend of non-stop action. The game will incorporate popular characters and various familiar vehicles and settings from Star Wars: Episode II. While the game's primary focus is on high-intensity engagement, defined combat roles for each vehicle will add a distinctive dimension. Upon meeting certain objectives, players can change vehicles during battle and pilot an array of units from the arsenal of the Republic, including a speeder bike, AT-SX assault walker, fighter tank, and Republic gunship. In all, players engage more than 30 unique combat units.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars features several unique multiplayer games, including Duel, King of the Hill, Conquest, and others. Duel presents a standard deathmatch scenario with various units from the game. In King of the Hill players attempt to earn points by staying in the "control zone" for as long as possible. Conquest is a unique blend of action and strategy that challenges two teams try to destroy each other's home base. In between the teams' home bases are outposts either player can capture. When an outpost is taken, it will automatically produce defensive laser turrets and offensive AI units for that team. Multiplayer support allows for between two and four players on GameCube and two-player split-screen mode on PlayStation®2.

TalkBack / TransWorld Surf: Next Wave Announced for GameCube
« on: October 15, 2002, 11:07:28 AM »
Atari's surfing game will be released for GameCube in Spring 2003.

ATARI ANNOUNCES SPRING 2003 RELEASE OF TRANSWORLD SURF: NEXT WAVE FOR THE NINTENDO GAMECUBE

New Edition of Genre-Defining Surfing Game Rebuilt From the Ground Up to Include New Gameplay Enhancements, Other Improvements

LOS ANGELES - Oct. 15, 2002 -  Atari is bringing the franchise that redefined the surfing video game genre, TransWorld Surf, to the Nintendo GameCubeT this spring with the release of a completely reinvented edition of the game: TransWorld Surf:T Next Wave.  The GameCube title improves upon and follows up TransWorld Surf for PlayStation® 2 and Xbox, which has been hailed as "the best surfing title ever."

"The TransWorld Surf franchise broke new ground in the action sports genre with its incredible graphics and lifelike gameplay and wave physics," said Jean-Philippe Agati, senior vice president and head of Infogrames, Inc.'s Los Angeles studio.  "TransWorld Surf: Next Wave has been rebuilt from the ground using what we learned from the first two editions.  The team at Angel is pushing the graphics even further, incorporating the gameplay and control enhancements developed for the PlayStation 2 and throwing in some new surprises and features that will continue the legacy of the franchise as the best surfing game available."

Working from start to finish with TransWorld Media, publisher of the world's most popular action sports publications, provided access to the world's best professional surfers, the most sought-after surfing event locations and authentically licensed gear.  With new hidden characters and wetsuits , a surf shop and new levels like Antarctica, TransWorld Surf: Next Wave brings gamers deeper into the world of professional surfing than anything before it.

Players assume the identity of one of 13 top-ranked surfers like Taj Burrow, Andy Irons, Shane Dorian, and many more to compete in an eleven-city tour sponsored by TransWorld Surf magazine.  Locations include Pipeline (Hawaii), Teahupoo (Tahiti), Kirra Point (Australia), Todos Santos (Mexico) and the all new location, Antarctica, renowned for its frigid water and perilous ice caves.  At each location, surfers must successfully complete a basic photo shoot before moving on to the competition.  They will also face goal challenges such as completing trick combinations or freeing trapped dolphins from fishing nets.

TransWorld Surf: Next Wave features seven unique gameplay modes, including single-player ProTour, Free Surf and Single Session modes, as well as two-person multiplayer Free Surf, Competition, King of the Wave and Shark Attack mode.  Shark Attack plays like "Tag" on the ocean -- the ultimate goal is to avoid being "it" longer than the other surfers.  The game starts when all surfers pull their first trick.  The scores for that trick are compared, and the surfer with the lowest score wipes out and becomes the "shark."  At the end of the event, the surfer with the least amount of time as the shark wins.

In all gameplay modes, players interact with other surfers, animals and objects including porpoises, bodyboarders, boats and more.  TransWorld Surf: Next Wave also features the Karma Meter, which tracks whether players interact with objects and people politely, leading to good karma, or rudely, leading to bad karma.   Keeping the meter high in the "Good Karma" area will lead to a better ride - other surfers will keep clear of the player's path and the sharks in the surf will not attack.

Developed by the incredibly talented minds -- and hardcore surfers -- at the San Diego-based Angel Studios, TransWorld Surf: Next Wave features the most groundbreaking water technology ever seen in a video game.  TransWorld Surf: Next Wave for Nintendo Gamecube will be released in Spring 2003.

TalkBack / Nintendo Comments on BAFTA Wins
« on: October 11, 2002, 12:09:43 PM »
Here is what Nintendo had to about their two awards for GameCube games.

NINTENDO SCOOP BAFTA DOUBLE
Pikmin and Luigi’s Mansion victorious

11 October 2002 - NINTENDO GAMECUBE titles PIKMIN and LUIGI’S MANSION have been crowned kings of the consoles at the UK video games industry’s prestigious awards.

The Interactivity Award was won by NINTENDO GAMECUBE favourite PIKMIN. The game was honoured for the best use of interactive media to deliver an immersive interactive experience.

Hailed as a “cultural masterpiece,”  Pikmin is an enchanting yet frantic game of real-time strategy where players take on the role of a spaceman named Captain Olimar who has crash-landed on an unusual planet. The goal of the game is to help Olimar collect his spaceship’s lost parts, which have been scattered all over the planet and you have eager little plant-like creatures called Pikmin to help you do it.  Each type of Pikmin has unique strengths, which Olimar must use to his advantage.  Players can control the Pikmin sprouts individually, in groups, or in one large Pikmin posse of 100 creatures.

In addition, NINTENDO GAMECUBE launch title LUIGI’S MANSION won the Audio category at the BAFTA Interactive Entertainment Awards, being picked out for the best use of sound, dialogue and music in an interactive production.

Both games are the brainchild of legendary Nintendo game developer Shigeru Miyamoto and with the charming characters, amazing special effects and compelling gameplay in both, PIKMIN and LUIGI’S MANSION highlight once again the outstanding brilliance of gameplay available on NINTENDO GAMECUBE.

This is another addition to the rave reviews that these games have already received which include:

Luigi’s Mansion is one of the most imaginative titles to come out of Japan for some time.  The visuals are exceptional and the transparency effects show off the GameCube’s power with some aplomb.  One of the first games you should consider purchasing.” – Arena

I’ve played (Pikmin) and I can tell you, once you start you don’t want to stop.  You think about it when you’re not playing it and you find you’d rather be playing it.  (I’d rather be playing it now, instead of writing this)….It’s an astonishing game.”  - David Phelan, Time Out

The BAFTA Interactive Entertainment Awards are now in their 5th year and are considered to be the largest and most prestigious entertainment awards in the world. Recognising and rewarding creative talent, the categories endeavour to represent all areas of new media.

There will be over 100 NINTENDO GAMECUBE games available by Christmas. NINTENDO GAMECUBE software retails at around 60 Euros.

TalkBack / Moustache Sponsorship Celebrates Mario in Europe
« on: October 04, 2002, 05:05:42 AM »
Super Mario Sunshine is released in Europe today, take a look at the newest sports sponsorship by Nintendo.

To "celebrate" the European release of Super Mario Sunshine, sports presenter Des Lynam dyed his moustache purple. Nintendo are sponsoring for a year, and are hoping to insure his moustache for this.

Nintendo & Mario Proud Sponsors of Des Lynam’s Moustache

London, 10.30am, 4 October 2002

The latest in a string of high profile sports sponsorships sees Nintendo enter the game with a groundbreaking deal to sponsor Des Lynam’s moustache.  The deal has been struck to mark the launch of Nintendo’s latest blockbuster video game, Super Mario Sunshine, only for NINTENDO GAMECUBE.

Star of the game, world famous gaming icon Mario, is known for sporting a splendid moustache, much like Des himself.  It was this that made Des the perfect choice as ambassador for Mario in his latest gaming incarnation.  And while the link may not be immediately obvious between a moustachioed Italian-American plumber from Brooklyn and a legendary sports anchorman from London, Des & Mario are showing that a fine moustache will transcend many borders.

This morning Des said of the deal, “I’m pleased that the true worth of my moustache has finally been realised.  It’s something I’ve worn proudly for years, despite what fashions have come and gone.  I consider Mario a long-serving brother in arms, and long may we both wear our fine facial hair with pride.”

Andy Williams, Nintendo UK, stated, “We’re over the moon to have Des on board.  It’s a meeting of two true moustachioed icons of their age, and sees Nintendo enter the premier league of sports sponsorship.  I can only hope the purple comes out of Des’ moustache, and that he doesn’t become addicted to playing Super Mario Sunshine at the expense of the sporting world as a result of this.”

The sponsorship deal is for a year, and as part of the deal Nintendo are looking to insure Des’ moustache against damage & loss.  The announcement was marked by a photocall with Mario and Des, who sported a GAMECUBE purple moustache for the occasion.  The photocall took place in central London in front of a giant poster of Des announcing the association.

TalkBack / Resident Evil 0 for Europe
« on: August 30, 2002, 06:35:22 AM »
There you have it, Resident Evil 0 will reach Europe in Spring 2003.

RESIDENT EVIL 0 SET TO INVADE NINTENDO'S GAMECUBE™ IN SPRING 2003 ECTS August 29, 2002 Capcom® Eurosoft today confirmed that it plans to release Resident Evil 0 (Zero) for the Nintendo GameCube in early 2003. Resident Evil 0 is the prequel to Resident Evil, the game that started it all. Utilising the GameCube's advanced processing power, Resident Evil 0 promises to amaze players with flawless animation, living environments and the best graphics in a video game ever! Created by Shinji Mikami, Capcom's master of horror, the Resident Evil series is now exclusive to Nintendo's GameCube system and ready to scare fans around the world. The Resident Evil series has sold more than 20 million copies since its introduction in 1996.

RESIDENT EVIL ZERO INCORPORATES AN ALL-NEW GAME SYSTEM:

2 Main Characters! Employs the new "Partner Zapping" system - Resident Evil Zero features two main characters: Rebecca, a rookie Raccoon City Police Officer who first appeared in the original Resident Evil, and Billy, a framed convict on the run. This new system allows players to follow the adventure of both characters successively by using the 'Zapping' ability. This function allows players to switch between the two main characters at the blink of an eye. If either character runs out of health, the game is over. More details regarding this revolutionary system are to follow.

Resident Evil 0 begins in July of 1998 in the suburbs of Raccoon City, a small town located in the Midwest. Several reported incidences of people being eaten by a strange creature have surfaced. The Raccoon city police department viewed the terrible murders as a top priority and quickly dispatched a special task force, the S.T.A.R.S Bravo team, to investigate. As the team heads to the scene of the murders, the helicopter transporting them begins to have mechanical problems, eventually crashing deep into the forest surrounding Raccoon City. While the Bravo Team was successful in escaping from the crash, they lost all of their equipment and weapons. As they began to gather their wits, the team saw a shocking image. Before them lay a half-destroyed, over-turned transport truck with corpses of several navy officers that had been gruesomely killed and mangled. Under orders from Commander Enrico, the Bravo Team began investigating the disappearance of Captain Billy Coen, one of the officers who was supposed to be in the over-turned transport yet his remains could not be found. Little does the Bravo Team know that this investigation is the beginning of a horrific nightmare.

TalkBack / Nintendo Breakfast 2002
« on: August 29, 2002, 12:26:19 AM »
No real new announcements, but a very special guest was present...

This morning Nintendo held a presentation and breakfast at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Breakfast was served in a room with about ten playable GameCubes with games including Star Fox Adventures, Metroid Prime, Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Sunshine.

Around half an hour later the presentation began. The stage was set with a red settee and the background made up of a panel with two doors.

"Big Brother" then introduced the speakers who would be Frederick Dior, David Gosen and a special guest. "Welcome to the Big Brother House, would Frederick Dior please come into the diary room."

Frederick Dior is a Games Industry Analyst from France, he works for a company called Data Monitor. "Big Brother" asked him to speak about predictions for the Games Industry, including his expectation figures of growth globally of around 15% and in Europe 14% by 2004.

A video was then shown of the public's opinion of the GameCube, their favourite games and characters. Following this was a video from Satoru Iwata, speaking to the European press for the first time as President of NCL. Mr Iwata spoke of the expected installed base for GameCube of 16 million worldwide and the Nintendo Difference among his topics and concluded with "The best is yet to come."

The next person to speak was David Gosen, Managing Director of NOE. He also affirmed Nintendo's healthy position in the European market, with over 1 million consoles sold already. Another video reel followed this showing the best moments for GameCube in Europe including the many promotions that had taken place over the past 118 days that the console has been released. Mr. Gosen then spoke about the many games to be expected this year, including seven more first party GC titles by Christmas and this was completed with a video of third parties including Activision, Acclaim and Capcom praising the console.

Asked about the recent price drops by Sony and Microsoft he replied that there are no plans, at present, to reduce the price of Nintendo GameCube.

And now we reach the special guest. Guesses were made by many as they showed a video of Mario's best moments and I guessed correctly! Charles Martinent treated us to a performance of Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Mario and of course Charles Martinent. This highlight ended the presentation.

TalkBack / A Turok is You!
« on: August 14, 2002, 10:15:42 AM »
Owning a Turok game is not the only way to become the dinosaur hunter...

Acclaim are offering the "chance" for five people to change their name to Turok for a year. The winners will receive the costs of the name change to Turok, and back to their original name in a year's time, £500, and an X-Box console with a copy of the game.

There have already been over 3,000 registrations for the competition at the website, the closing date is September 2nd.

Thousands apply to become the UK's first human adverts.
Trading identities is all the rage.

A video games company that announced yesterday it was seeking marketing pioneers to take part in a new advertising technique has been totally overwhelmed by the response. Acclaim UK invited applications to take part in a project known as Identity Marketing™, whereby individuals will change their names by deed poll to Turok, the hero in the title of Acclaim's epic new release, Turok: Evolution. In a little over 12 hours, over 3,000 people have applied to swap their identities for those of a video game character and new applications are being submitted to the website that is dedicated to this project (www.mynameisturok.co.uk) at the rate of 20-30 per minute.

Acclaim UK will choose five people from the tens of thousands that are expected to volunteer to take part in the Identity Marketing™ campaign. The five will then spend the next year as living, breathing advertisements for the Turok game. In the same way as a company might buy a billboard hoarding, newspaper space or television airtime, Acclaim UK will be renting the identities of the participants for a year.

The new marketing discipline represents a leap forward and it is believed will be tremendously successful for brands such as Turok. Conventional methods of advertising are decreasing in their ability to make a difference and it is believed that Identity Marketing™ is a new and very powerful way of getting through to consumers.

Shaun White, UK Communications Manager for Acclaim UK, said: "We've been staggered by the response. Naturally, we are looking at Identity Marketing™ as an experiment in our marketing strategy. But we've been truly amazed at the reaction we've had to the Turok project in such a short space of time."

The five new Turoks will each receive £500 and a Microsoft X-Box for partaking in this Identity Marketing™ project. People wishing to be considered need to apply online at www.mynameisturok.co.uk by September 2nd 2002. This will enable the successful applicants to have their new identities in time for the launch of Turok Evolution on September 6th.

Charles Martinet: PAPPA!!!!!!! That is what Mario says when he sees Mr. Miyamoto. Mr. Miyamoto is the most wonderful man! He is so nice; such a gentleman.
