TalkBack / Super Mario Ball Announced for Europe
« on: August 18, 2004, 05:54:28 AM »
Mario Pinball Land is coming to Europe with a new name in November.

JOIN MARIO AS HE BOUNCES INTO  EUROPE IN SUPER MARIO BALL

18th August 2004 - Get ready to roll through Mushroom Kingdom in this latest Mario game from Nintendo – with a twist!  Super Mario Ball is a fusion of both a pinball and an adventure game, and sees Mario transformed into a ball. Steamrolling through enemies, defeating Boss characters, winning new power ups and much much more are all in store for Mario fans everywhere. Super Mario Ball for the Game Boy Advance launches across Europe on 26th November 2004.

The new adventure sees Mario enter a new and exciting pinball world, his aim to capture his beloved Princess Peach – kidnapped by Bowser and taken to this other dimension. A scientist uses his ‘Spherifier’ machine to transform Mario into a ball and fire him off to destroy the fiend and save his love. Mario then enters the arena in which all the action commences, combining both adventuring and pinball together!

Players can choose their very own path through the varied environments of the Mushroom Kingdom, fighting off familiar enemies and collecting coins as they go. Each of the many environments, which range from a fairground to the countryside, have there own specific enemies for players to defeat and different features to explore. Players will encounter many all time classic Mario power-ups along the way, including the Super Mushroom, 1-Up Mushroom, Invincibility Star and Lightning Bolt. In true pinball style, the more enemies players fight off in quick succession, the more high scores they will amass.

Players can control Mario through a set of flippers that appear at the bottom of each arena. Each arena takes up a single screen but by flipping Mario into certain doorways players can open special exits leading them straight to a new Boss. Make sure Mario doesn’t fall through the flippers though, as this will send him backwards in the game or even to his defeat.

Super Mario Ball launches across Europe on 26th November 2004 at the estimated retail price of around 40 Euros.

TalkBack / Serious Games Summit Announced
« on: August 06, 2004, 06:24:49 AM »
A Game Developers' Conference focusing on games for non-entertainment and commercial sectors takes place in Washington D.C. this October.

The number of non-entertainment games under development is rapidly increasing and demand for the ideas, skills and techniques used in commercial entertainment games is at an all time high. As a result, an entirely new market has emerged.

Game developers and tool providers can tap into this new market and develop new revenue streams.

The Serious Games Summit D.C. gives game developers and program managers the opportunity to learn from successful serious games applications and forge links between the traditional videogame industry and public and private sectors; homeland security, state and local governments, military agencies, and educational institutions.

Keynote Speaker:

Jim Dunnigan Keynote Address: To Be Announced

"Jim Dunnigan, could be considered one of the first serious game developers. In his keynote, Jim will share his vast experience and unique perspective on developing game-based simulations and models."

Conference Highlights:

Incident Commander and a Force more Powerful Doug Whatley

Breakaway Games is one of the most successful hybrid entertainment/serious game development studios at work today. In this detailed case study session, Doug Whatley, CEO of Breakway Games, details the development models, technology issues, and design details behind two major serious game efforts. This session provides some excellent hands-on advice for engineering major game-based simulations.

Inside Building an Engine for Learning Games Nick Dekanter

Building games for K-16 education is not a trivial task. To date most games built for this market have been one-off titles simulating a specific scenario such as the settling of the American West, drill and practice titles with sugar coated game elements, or interesting games based on simple subject matter like geography, reading, or nutrition.

TalkBack / The Making Of GoldenEye 007 Debuts at EDF
« on: July 30, 2004, 01:39:54 AM »
Martin Hollis, Director and Producer of Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark for Nintendo 64, will give a presentation on the creation of the game and his experiences since leaving Rare.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: GOLDENEYE 007 CREATOR TO BREAK SILENCE

Martin Hollis To Present ‘Making Of GoldenEye 007’ Session At European Developers’ Forum, Offering Inspiration And Insight To Game Creators

Friday 30 July 2004/... Martin Hollis, director and producer of the multi-award-winning GoldenEye 007 for Nintendo 64, is to present publicly for the first time ever at the forthcoming European Developers' Forum (EDF).

The event, which is being organised by The Independent Games Developers' Association (TIGA) runs from September 1st – 3rd and is part of a family of shows at Dockland's ExCeL venue which include European Games Network, a trade-only exhibition, and Game Stars Live, a massive multiformat consumer exhibition which runs through until September 5th.

His session, 'The Making of GoldenEye 007', will offer – for the first time ever from his perspective – an amazing insight into the development of the ground-breaking title, which, seven years on, is still widely regarded as one of the best first-person games ever created, and certainly the best-ever licensed title of all time.

Although much of the session will be about the game's creation, Martin will apply lessons learnt during its development to current and future projects. He will touch on his experiences since quitting Rare and setting up Cambridge-based developer Zoonami, and focus on ways in which game creators can excel in design and gameplay.

EDF is a TIGA event, supported and actively marketed by many of TIGA's partner associations, including APOM in France, GAME in Germany as well as the Dutch and Danish trade bodies. EDF's International Programme Consultant is Jennifer Olsen, the influential former editor of Game Developer magazine in the USA, while EDF's European Programme Consultant is Fred Gill of Gusto Games.

"My aim is to help others through my own experience," says Martin Hollis, founder of Zoonami, currently developing the revolutionary rhythm-action game, Funkydilla. "And as this is the first time I have ever discussed the development of GoldenEye 007 in such a public forum, I hope to offer delegates inspiration and advice which will result in better games from us all."

"This is a real coup for the European Developers' Forum," adds Fred Hasson, CEO of TIGA. "Martin is one of this country's most respected yet elusive developers and his presence at EDF illustrates that it is the only conference of its type to receive such support from the length and breadth of the industry. I'm sure, like so many of the sessions we have organised, it will be something not to be missed."

EDF is open to all developers. A full list of speakers and details on the entire programme can be found at www.europeandevelopersforum.co.uk

TalkBack / Konga Beach Reaches London Zoo
« on: July 28, 2004, 03:35:56 PM »
We visit the Konga Beach Road Trip as it arrives at London Zoo.

Today was the first day of a two-day stop at London Zoo for the Nintendo Konga Beach Tour Truck. The area near the children’s playground was cleared to make room for the activities and on entering participants are provided with a map that doubles as an entry card for the Donkey Konga tournament.

To enter the tournament first three “beach games” had to be completed. Pikmin Slingshot involves catapulting plush Pikmin through a basketball hoop, in Feed the Apes bananas are thrown through a board with holes for DK and Diddy’s mouths, and Mario Surf Run has people running down a slide whilst attached to a bungee cord.

The song of choice for the tournament is “Alright” on Monkey mode, the easy level of the Street Performer mode in the game. High scores are recorded onto completed entry cards which can then be handed in for the competition. The top ten scorers from the events earn themselves a VIP place in the finals at Game Stars Live this September.

In the truck there were a number of GameCube and Game Boy Advance titles to play. Most had already been released but a few such as Wario Ware and Animal Crossing are yet to be released in Europe. Donkey Konga was playable for practice too, with around eight songs unlocked on each difficulty level.

Other attractions include the Crusha Beach Bar serving milkshakes and giant blow-up Pokemon that became the latest addition to the zoo animals for today.

The Konga Beach tour continues throughout the UK next month.

TalkBack / Seventeen More Exhibitors Announced for EGN
« on: July 23, 2004, 02:28:35 AM »
The latest exhibitors confirmed for European Games Network include Nintendo and Sega.

EUROPEAN GAMES NETWORK ANNOUNCES SEVENTEEN MORE EXHIBITORS

Sega, Nintendo and NCsoft confirm major presence at Europe’s new games business event; European Games Network, London ExCeL, 1st – 3rd September 2004

Friday 23 July 2004, London/... ELSPA, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association, and European Games Network (EGN) organisers London EventCo today outlined details of 17 new exhibitors for EGN, including global games leaders Sega, Nintendo and NCsoft. At the same time ELSPA cautioned companies and individuals from across the UK, European and global games business "not to be misled by claims of other show organisers".

The 17 exhibitors confirmed this week include Nintendo, Sega, NCsoft, Gusto Games, Diosoft, OPM, Game Infinity, Phoenix Games and Elite Systems. All will have an exhibiting presence at the September event with booths and meeting rooms.

Roger Bennett, director general of ELSPA, said: "These are tremendous additions to the existing roster of exhibitors at EGN. They represent a diverse range of products and services and demonstrate the breadth of appeal that EGN has across the complete gaming channel."

EGN has already confirmed attendees from over 300 companies from 35 plus territories around the world, including Electronic Arts, Atari, Eidos, Activision, Vivendi Universal, Nokia N-Gage, UbiSoft, Microsoft, Gizmondo, Acclaim, Empire, Amazon, Square Europe, Leader, Koch Media, Just Flight, Buena Vista Games, Capcom, Konami, Codemasters, Rockstar, Sony Computer Entertainment, Vodafone, Future Publishing, Centresoft, GAME, Gamestation, Gem Distribution, 20:20 Games, Dixons, WH Smiths, Woolworths, Toys 'R' Us, Blitz Games, Pinnacle, Kuju, Sony DADC, Rebellion, Elixir Studios, Swordfish Studios, IOMO, Argonaut, Bigben Interactive, Distinctive Development, Zoo Digital, Hip Interactive Europe, and many many more.

Meanwhile, ELSPA's Roger Bennett offered a word of caution to the global games business: "The games industry is putting its weight behind EGN, as is proven by the list of heavyweight publishers and development studios who have already confirmed as exhibitors. In our opinion, other organisations are being extremely liberal with the facts. That's up to them; they are the ones who will have to deal with the consequences of their actions. However, no one wants anyone in the industry, whether they are travelling internationally or domestically to be misled. We would therefore urge people in the strongest possible terms not to be distracted by the claims of others. The games industry will be at EGN in September."

A full list of speakers and details on the entire programme can be found at www.europeandevelopersforum.co.uk.

Jeremy Longley, chair of the EDF steering committee and executive producer at leading developer Kuju Entertainment, said: "The focus of EDF is very much on the hands-on game developer. We have speakers who will tackle the practical day-to-day issues facing every member of a development studio, not just the strategic business concerns. It's about these issues, the future and the challenges we all face in the development industry."

The Steering Committee for the European Developers' Forum comprises: Charles Cecil - Revolution Software Mark Hewitt - Elixir Studios Tim Heaton - Electronic Arts Hermen Hulst - Guerrilla Games Fred Gill - Gusto Games Jason Kingsley - Rebellion Jeremy Longley - Kuju Entertainment (Chair) Harald Riegler - Sproing Jez San - Argonaut Chris van der Kuyl - VIS Entertainment Antoine Villette – Darkworks John Broomhall - Develop Columnist and Audio Director (BPL)

Fred Hasson, CEO of TIGA, said: "We have an excellent group of talented key individuals who will shape the European Developers' Forum programme. We firmly believe that too many conferences tackle strategic and top-line business issues and seem to neglect the backbone of our industry – the game creators, artists, programmers and producers. EDF will bring the focus back on the skills, tools and technologies that every game developer needs in order to meet the increasingly competitive requirements of the next five years."

The new three-day conference has been created by TIGA in order to provide the development community in Europe with a professional outlook and a far-reaching programme of content, including two days of development related issues and a day dedicated to mobile entertainment.

The European Developers' Forum takes place along side European Games Network (EGN). TIGA also has an exclusive agreement with EGN which will see TIGA create The TIGA International Content Market, a dedicated forum for business for developers. TIGA is working with UK Trade & Investment to bring an inward mission of US commissioning executives to the International Content Market, and will be working closely with both ELSPA and EGN event organiser, London EventCo, to create, promote and manage the Market.

The TIGA International Content Market will be hosted on the main floor of EGN and will consist of a mix of open plan meeting areas and low cost closed presentation rooms, private meeting rooms and demo areas. The programme will benefit from the EGN Meeting Planner, an online meetings diary open to all VIP delegates and exhibitors to manage and plan their time at the event.

European Developers' Forum runs Wednesday 1st – Friday 3rd September 2004 at ExCeL London. It takes place alongside European Games Network that also runs Wednesday 1st – Friday 3rd September 2004 and Game Stars Live, the consumer games show that runs Wednesday 1st – Sunday 5th September 2004.

Get your dancing shoes on and join the party that never sleeps: Wario Ware is back in town! This wild experience hosted by Wario offers players the choice of no less than 200 wacky mini-games to keep gamers entertained for hours on end. An action packed and thrilling race against the clock, Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Party Game$ is available across Europe from 3 September 2004.

With its cute comic book graphics, this game is totally unpredictable and bursting with fun. The zany atmosphere is unique to Wario Ware and was originally created for the Game Boy Advance in 2003. Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Party Game$ is a hilarious multiplayer game that will test and twist every inch of the brain, keeping players amused for hours!

Fast and furious and not for the faint hearted; only gamers with lightening quick reactions will succeed in this roller coaster game. Players are presented with a succession of random games: each one unique, with the player never knowing what is coming next. Winning mini-games will earn players screaming fans to accompany them to the Survival-Fever mode, where players must strut their stuff in the disco between each mini-game.  If players falter in any of their tasks, they lose their fans and are left to boogie alone, which means game over!

Multiplayer madness comes into its own in Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Party Game$ and four players can get together to share the fun. In addition to the controller, players can use the Game Boy Advance as control pads; players must successfully manoeuvre themselves throughout each game, completing each one as quickly as possible. But be warned, the controls are simple, but the games can be tough!  Don’t expect any help from your friends, this mode is extremely competitive and rivals can play a number of tricks to dash your chances of winning. Players can even make opponent’s controllers vibrate and activate on-screen characters to appear and obstruct their views.

Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Party Game$ is available across Europe on 3 September 2004 at the estimated retail price of 30 Euros.

TalkBack / Sonic Advance 3 Competition
« on: May 18, 2004, 12:18:40 PM »
If you live in the UK, sign up on THQ's website for a chance to win a Sonic Advance 3 Print signed by Yuji Naka.

For any hardcore Sonic fan it's the gaming equivalent of having Van Gogh's Sunflowers hanging on your study wall with "Cheers! - Vince" scrawled across the bottom right corner...

It's an extremely rare, numbered and framed Sonic Advance 3 Print signed by the noble 'hog's revered creator himself - Yuji Naka - and it's there for the taking on www.thq.co.uk .   Sonic the Hedgehog blazed across our screens for the first time back in 1991, and the spiky hero’s debut was recently voted the greatest game of all time. Naka-san has since lent his hand to some of Sega’s greatest titles, including NiGHTS into Dreams and Phantasy Star Online. Sonic Advance 3, the latest and greatest 2D adventure from Sonic Team is set to blister thumbs all over again when it hits Game Boy Advance on June 18th .

This truly is a money-can’t-buy prize for any self-respecting Sonic fan! There are only 25 of these prints in existence and all you have to do in order to stand a chance of winning a priceless piece of gaming memorabilia is answer one simple question at www.thq.co.uk . The closing date for the competition is the 17th July – good luck!   Sonic Facts Sonic the Hedgehog was designed and developed by Yuji Naka, director of Sonic Team, in 1990 and launched on the Megadrive in Europe during 1991, selling over 4 million copies.

Later that year its sequel, Sonic 2, hit shelves and quickly became a hit, selling 400,000 units in its first five days of availability, earning the status of the top-selling 16-bit video game of all time.

Sonic has sold in excess of 33 million copies worldwide.

Scientists in Europe and the US found a gene and named it ‘Sonic’ from its resemblance to his spikes.

Elspa recently launched a research programme to determine the best ever game, won by the original Sonic the Hedgehog game. The results were announced in December 2003.
