Podcast Discussion / Episode 464: Viewtiful Jokes
« on: February 21, 2016, 12:10:53 PM »

More fun than a sack full of Soul Nuts.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41961/episode-464-viewtiful-jokes

The time has finally come for the big screen debut of the RetroActive for Viewtiful Joe, but first we kick the show off with an opening act of New Business. Greg starts with impressions for the demo of Bravely Second: End Layer. The sequel to the uneven Bravely Default, it's still too early to see if this game dispenses with what dragged its predecessor down, but early thoughts are positive. Jon fulfills his vow to go all PS4, all the time, with early thoughts on open-world darling, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. Is it possible that he finds it less than...beWITCHing? James has a Mega Man two-pack, with thoughts on mercilessly difficult Mega Man Zero 2 (again) and the Mega Man X-inspired rogue-like 20XX. As the 20XX press release points out, at least one Mega Man clone actually managed to make it to market. Guillaume concludes New Business with thoughts on Life is Strange, a Telltale-inspired game that outstrips its inspiration, from the makers of an adventure game nobody can Remember. He finishes up with thoughts on Virtual Console import Kuru Kuru Kururin, a game where you play a bird in a helicopter, viewed from above. And why not?

After a break, it's our RetroActive for GameCube classic Viewtiful Joe. Discussion starts with the Capcom Five (the infamous quintet of "GameCube exclusives" that weren't), and their place in Nintendo history. After an historical primer, we kick off discussion of Viewtiful Joe itself. Difficulty, gameplay, art, story, and design are all topics of discussion. Lastly, we discuss the game's legacy, and Joe's place in history.

Thanks to everyone who played along with us! We'll be announcing plans for our next RetroActive soon, so please stay tuned!

However, we'll be dipping back into the listener mail next week, so go ahead and drop your questions or comments into our mailbag.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 463: Feel the Magic User
« on: February 14, 2016, 02:34:10 AM »

My boy Hector once axed 40 guys in a single day; do you really think he's going to be shy about me touching his face?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41935/episode-463-feel-the-magic-user

Radio Free Nintendo is a little bit abbreviated this week; due to some schedule conflicts, Jon, Gui, Greg, and James set the relatively restrained goal of producing a Listener Mail-only episode. Of course, this means the single-segment show turns into one of the longest Listener Mail segments in years. Topics covered include: picking RPGs on the 3DS for a fan of Western RPGs, a "touch" of censorship in Nintendo's localization efforts, the difficulty of making a new maker, and Nintendo's recent messaging strategies. You can question our messaging strategy via our mailbag.

It's last call for our next Retroactive; we will be talking about Viewtiful Joe next week. Comments can be placed in the discussion thread or sent via the mailbag. We've got some great comments for our Xenoblade Chronicles X spoilercast, so keep them coming.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 462: The Full Monty Punch
« on: February 07, 2016, 03:59:00 AM »

Getting hit by a dragon's spear is always a bad time.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41894/episode-462-the-full-monty-punch

It's February, the month of missing time, and apparently the start of Radio Free Nintendo's silly season. A punchy episode starts with the customary New Business, lead off by Jon. His resolution to only speak about PlayStation 4 games is immediately broken by his thoughts on 3DS eShop free-to-play Pokémon Picross. The man who never learned to love number puzzles finds it only took a synergy with his love of Pokémon to get him in. Come for tips on how to play Picross, stay for insight into a man's psychology. Greg and James discuss the latest DLC for Smash Bros. The release of the final two characters, Corrin and Bayonetta, gives them time to talk about the fan service master class one more time. Guillaume has had a chance to play Final Fantasy Explorers online, and has an update on the Monster Hunter-inspired Final Fantasy game. He lavishes praise such as, "It's a game I bought," and "I guess I'll keep playing it." He then pivots to Wii platform adventure game Muramasa. Yes, it's a gorgeous game and a lot of fun, but where the heck is Gui supposed to be going? Lastly, James takes a look back at 16 months of fitness. Wii Fit...ness U. No chicken wings were required to reach his health goals, but the Wii U Fit Meter helped all the same, giving its life in the process.

After a break, it's time for an utter failure of a "Thunderous Round" of Listener Mail. Topics include: Level 5-iest games, Quality of Life, and Zelda for Wii U. The crew even manages to answer a question about a Nintendo scarf without crashing the episode into a ditch! You can ask us about your choice in fashion accessories via our mailbag.

Just a reminder, we'll be doing our Retroactive for Viewtiful Joe on Episode 464. You can post your thoughts in the discussion thread. We'll also take comments via the mailbag. And lastly, keep sending us your thoughts on Xenoblade Chronicles X for our upcoming spoilercast. We will likely talk about X and it's predecessor, but if we do we will caution prior to the show's beginning.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 461: A Unique Boutique Experience
« on: February 02, 2016, 12:07:23 AM »
Though on The Order, the most damning reviews I've seen said that despite its short overall length it still felt too long for the content in it, great amounts of padding and recycling.

I can confirm that this is the case. Once you realize that yeah, the entirety of the gameplay is cover-based shooting in kill rooms punctuated by the odd quicktime event fight, you're like, "Alright, lets just get this over with." Nothing about the game is particularly novel aside from the high-quality visuals, so you really just want to wrap it up quickly. The story kind of falls of the rails at the end too, so when you're done you're more than ready to move on.

Again, not a terrible game. I'd give it maybe 6/10.  But if you never play it in your life you aren't missing anything.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 461: A Unique Boutique Experience

All inventory will be accompanied with a unique boutique price.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41867/episode-461-a-unique-boutique-experience

After a long absence, Jon is back! It is up to you to determine if that exclamation indicates joy or fear; please reserve judgment until episode is complete - he has earned such caution.

Guillaume starts off New Business this week with Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure, Capcom's early Wii point-and-waggle adventure game, now available for download on the Wii U eShop. He follows it up with early thoughts on Final Fantasy Explorers, the Monster Hunter-inspired 3DS spin-off. Expect more involved impressions in the coming weeks. James takes his role as host of Radio Free NINTENDO very seriously, respecting the time you devote to listen to the show by talking about Suikoden, a 21 year old PlayStation JRPG. Striding the gulf in time between the the 16 and 32-bit eras, it's a curious title that still has him excited about the gameplay implications for future entries, coming soon to a pachinko parlor near you. Jon makes his triumphant return to New Business with the anti-Xenoblade Chronicles X, The Order: 1886. His segment seems rendered in glorious detail, but I think the content of it is pretty shallow. Lastly, Greg pulls us out of a New Business tailspin with impressions of indie darling, the Sega Master System-era throwback Freedom Planet. While the Sonic parallels are self-evident, the GENESIS of some of the other allusions represent a MASTER class in 90s Sega gaming (I have no regrets).

Following New Business, Now Playing makes its return after an absence from the show, appropriate since the segment itself is something of an abcess on the show.

After a musical interlude, it's time for Listener Mail. Topics covered this week include: finding the right Pokémon for a Shin Megami Tensei fan, paid DLC in Super Mario Maker, Nintendo's future retail plans, and open world as a gameplay design versus open world as a marketing tool. Here's where we use this article as a marketing tool to get you to send questions, comments, end music suggestions, and whatever strikes your fancy to our mailbag.

As a reminder, our next RetroActive segment is coming up. We're going to be playing Viewtiful Joe for the GameCube. The discussion thread is open, and just waiting for your comments. We'll be doing this RetroActive in three weeks, so get started soon if you want to play along with us!

One final plug: Guillaume has finished Xenoblade Chronicles X, which means we're going to be doing our Spoilercast sometime in the near future. What's that mean for you? We want your reactions, fan theories, thoughts, etc. sent to our mailbag. In order to insulate others from spoilers, please use email instead of forum posts. For those of you that haven't played or completed Xenoblade Chronicles X yet, we will do some other spoiler-free content. No one escapes the reach of Radio Free Nintendo for even a week.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 458: Auguratio Ex Japonicum
« on: January 10, 2016, 09:06:00 AM »

The end leads back to the beginning. Predictions become beloved games, or comedic failures.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41754/episode-458-auguratio-ex-japonicum

It's been two weeks since RFN last released an episode, and in the intervening time we've celebrated the holidays and inaugurated a new year. With the conclusion of 2015, RFN's team of Jon, Greg, Gui, and James celebrate the last year of games by naming their individual Top Five games. The two weeks without getting to talk games results in a particularly feverish discussion. Thankfully, no effort is made to hash out Radio Free Nintendo's "Game of 2015," because that is a losing proposition.

Speaking of losing propositions, after a lonely Now Playing, the team christens 2016 with our annual predictions. Funnily enough, while there are plenty of NX predictions to go around none of them deal with what the NX actually is. Instead, topics covered include the likes of Mario Galaxy 3, Splatoon clothing, and the return of Pokémon. Come for the well-reasoned predictions, stay for Guillaume's Seussian visions of the future.

Next week we'll be returning to the normal New Business/Listener Mail format. It's a new year, so let's get some new emails in our inbox.

Not everyone can be a winner; thankfully the host of the show gets to define all terms to his advantage

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41674/episode-457-define-winning-to-the-persistently-non-competitive

It's the last episode of 2015, and in a move that was definitely NOT a scheduling gaffe we are joined by friend of the show, and two-time conqueror of Xenoblade Chronicles X, Syrenne McNulty. No one was out this week, we absolutely planned to have five people this week and three last week.

Syrenne is here to answer all of our Xenoblade questions. However, we start New Business with Guillaume, who has the finally-released SteamWorld Heist on 3DS, which he is very impressed with, and a report on Axiom Verge, which he is less so. Syrenne has potential Wii U game of the year, Devil's Third, and lets us know how many awards it should win. She follows with some insights on the Japanese mobile industry that she gleaned from playing all of the Japanese App Store's Top 100. Finally, we reach the main event. Jon, Greg, and James provide their current Xenoblade Chronicles X thoughts, and turn to Syrenne for answers to their burning questions.

We wrap up 2015 with an abbreviated Listener Mail. Questions cover identifying a franchise that could go from Non-tendo to Smash in a generation, and if it is merely a matter of time that keeps us from "competitive Smash." The answer is no, by the way. You can ask us the unanswerable via our inbox.

We had really great response to our survey, you all are the best. If you haven't had time to fill it out, please do us a favor and take it. The survey will take a few minutes, and will ask you about a ton of podcasts you've never heard of, but it will help us understand what you all want to hear. As always, thank you.

Lastly, I (James) wanted to add a personal note as we end 2015. Obviously, I didn't start the year with the intention of taking over as host. When Jonny asked, I was terrified to do so; I was worried I would let down our listeners. Instead, you all have been unbelievably kind as I learned how to run and host the show. It's all incredibly humbling. Going forward into 2016, I hope to continue to improve both myself and the show, so please let us know how we're doing and what you'd like to hear us talk about. You can use the mailbag for your suggestions. I want to thank Gui for his continued efforts to edit the show, Jon for agreeing to stay on and being my sounding board, and Greg for helping me plan the transition and ultimately agreeing to return to the show. And of course, thank you to all our listeners. Oh, lastly, if you want to get the show something for Christmas, please use the break to fill our Mailbag with interesting questions!

Podcast Discussion / Episode 455: Winds of Thunder Round
« on: November 29, 2015, 07:37:00 AM »

Even the Lords of Thunder take off for the holidays.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41576/episode-455-winds-of-thunder-round

The Thanksgiving holiday forced some changes to the Radio Free Nintendo recording schedule, so this week's episode is an mailbag-only thunderish episode. Greg, Gui, James, and a late-joining Jon attempt, and ultimately fail, to thunder through a collection of emails covering topics from the future of RPGs on NX to playing old RPGs on retro consoles. We cover the fullness of time on RFN. You can let us cover your fullness by sending an email to our mailbag.

We won't be recording RFN next week because THIS SATURDAY Nintendo World Report will be having our 6th Annual Telethon for Child's Play. Starting at 11:30 AM EST, we have up to 13 hours of content coming to you. The more donations we collect, the longer the show. Team RFN will be starting us off at 11:30 with a live Now Playing, followed by an hour conversation on franchises stuck in 2D. At 3:00 PM, James and Jon will be back to have strategic conversations on the future of business. And, if we hit our $6000 goal, team RFN will host a live Hot Takes-off. You call in with your hottest takes, and the person swinging the deepest fire wins the Hot Takes trophy. There will be an actual trophy - of sorts.

We're doing this for a good cause, so if you can't afford to donate right now, please try to get the word out about the show. It's the most fun thing NWR does all year. We hope you can join us. We will make the recordings available on the RFN RSS feed next week.

Lastly: yesterday we announced the first RFN stretch goal. If we get 12 donations before RFN starts their noon segment, Greg, James, and Jon will do an NFL playoff podcast, leading into Wild Card Weekend. Send an email to the mailbag with proof of your donation to let us know you're donating for that.

What's a Hot Take? Take a look!

I played through the Halo 5 campaign on easy (yeah, Im one of those gamers) and I didnt find the AI team mates to be a problem at all.

But now that I think about it a bit more, maybe I was doing all the work without noticing.
There was only one time when they failed to revive me.

Yep, that's because you played through on Easy, where the enemy shots aren't powerful enough to one-shot anything. Give one level a shot on Legendary and you'll see exactly what I mean.

This is a very serious conversation about "microtransactions."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41549/episode-454-mobile-sidejob

It's the first full episode with the full cast for a while. With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday in the States, and NWR's telethon, it's also going to be the last for a couple of weeks.

James kicks off New Business with Level-5's most insidious transmedia property: Yo-Kai Watch! After inoculating himself with doses of Inazuma Eleven and Little Battler eXperience, he is immune to Level-5's siren call. It turns out a mutation responsible for a coin purse that leads people to spend recklessly rendered his immunizations ineffective. Jon has a report on Halo 5, starring Master Chief, Smash Bros. next DLC character. Guillaume states what should be obvious: Snoopy's Grand Adventure (3DS), Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX (Wii U Virtual Console), and Rodea the Sky Soldier (Wii) are less than fantastic games. The plus: Octodad: Dadliest Catch is silly fun. Greg concludes New Business with a different kind of transmedia property: Capcom's Gaist Crusher on 3DS. An anime, a manga series, two games, and Treasure's legacy couldn't save this attempt to out-Level-5 Level-5.

After a break, it's time for listener mail. Jon dips out after a question about "shoehorning" Nintendo franchises into mobile, while the rest of the team continues to answer a question about how and why the 3DS library seems to be backloaded with RPGs. You can ask us about our backload by sending us an email.

Just a reminder, Nintendo World Report is thrilled to be doing the sixth annual telethon/live podcast for Child's Play charity. Jon and James will be opening the show on Saturday, December 5, at 11:30 AM EST with a LIVE NOW PLAYING, with NWR Site Director Neal Ronaghan on hand but unable to stop it. At noon Eastern, RFN will have an hour of listener interaction. Later in the afternoon, Jon and James are putting on their business suits for a segment that you...may want to miss. Lastly, if we reach our donation goal, we promise we will cap off the day with a Shenanigans segment that will put Red Velvet to shame. Don't know about Red Velvet? We envy you. We love the telethon, because it's our opportunity to interact with you and, most importantly, we get to help a good cause. We hope you'll be able to join us.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 453: Even the Podcast Leaked Early
« on: November 14, 2015, 11:07:53 AM »

I guess this makes Jon the show's Cloud Strife? I'm not comfortable with this analogy.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41521/episode-453-even-the-podcast-leaked-early

After over five months of silence and a mountain of leaks, Nintendo jumped back into the Direct game, foiling Radio Free Nintendo's attempts to take a week off. Jon returns to join Greg, Gui, and James in applying their critical lenses on topics as broad as boxed, retail, Virtual Console games to wolf amiibo, to Sakurai's latest Limit Break. And remember, Radio Free Nintendo is always Free to Start. You've seen everyone else try to make sense of Cloud in Smash, but RFN has the world exclusive on what the Wolf Link amiibo really unlocks.

We'll return to our normal format next week; so, drop us an email and maybe we'll use it on the show!

We have a lot of content planned for Radio Free Nintendo between now and the end of the year, however December 5 is the most important date on the RFN calendar - Nintendo World Report will be hosting our sixth annual telethon for Child's Play charity. We'll be posting donation information and the show schedule sometime this week, so keep an eye open for it. Every year we're humbled by how generous our listeners are, so we thank you in advance.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 449: Can't Outshine the Sun
« on: October 18, 2015, 10:27:00 AM »

There is a new king at Royal Tennis Academy. Long live the King!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41329/episode-449-cant-outshine-the-sun

New 3DS games (new, 3DS, games - not New 3DS games) dominate New Business this week. Jon doesn't have anything to talk about, and yet the segment still runs to full time. James kicks it off with a look at 3DS JRPG Legend of Legacy - think Etrian in third person - and we all know how much James loves Etrian. Greg has impressions from 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Finally, a good Sonic game in 3D! Guillaume talks briefly about his one-night stand with Rocket League on PS4, and helicopters his plug cord to wrap up New Business with Chibi-Robo Zip Lash.

After the break, it's time for the first RetroActive of RFN Season 5: Mario Tennis: Power Tour for the GBA. The crew spent most of their time in the story mode, a feature of Camelot's handheld sports titles. Conversation covers the world building, parallels with later sports RPG series, the tutorial structure (or lack there of), and the surprising depth built into what one might expect to be a Mario-branded cash in. However, it takes a guest, former Nintendo Pirate Radio host Stan Ferguson, to clearly elucidate what makes Mario Tennis: Power Tour a game worthy of holy matrimony.

Next week is Episode 450 and we're working to celebrate the milestone episode in the new, mature, sensibilities of Season 5. You can send us your comments or questions to our mailbag.

Additionally, Radio Free Nintendo is looking to make a new logo. If you have any ideas, feel free to send them to our mailbag. It needs to be scalable to at least 1400x1400 pixels, as per iTunes specifications.

Lastly, thanks to Michael "TYP" Cole for having James on the latest episode of Radio Trivia, Episode 138: Just Blame Lindemann Syndrome. It's a fun show, so if you're not a regular listener give it a shot.

Don't believe Nintendo, baboons are horrifying.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41292/episode-448-accurate-portrayals-of-baboons-in-the-media

Radio Free Nintendo has two special episodes coming up. Next week is the show's first RetroActive in a metaphorical "Land of Oz." The following week is episode 450. How do you do an episode before those kinds of major events? The answer: you start it with New Business!

Greg has an update on Rare Replay, touching on Rare's early games before focusing on the connection between N64-classic Blast Corps and N64-also-a-game-I-guess Jet Force Gemini. Guillaume reports on the creeping Amiibo infection that has befallen RFN, Swedish mythological horror game Year Walk, and PlayStation Zelda-inspired, and anti-baboon propaganda, Alundra. Jon, recording from a drive-thru at the bottom of Ganymede's subterranean ocean, was apparently stranded there after finally deciding that that Galaxy 2 thing might be worth a few of his invaluable seconds. If you've not heard of Super Mario Galaxy 2, it turns out it's an okay game. Lastly, James hunts endless shinobi in FDS kunai-hell and Zelda engine reuse project Nazo no Murasame Jo ("The Mysterious Murasame Castle").

Following a properly recorded, from technical-standpoint only, Now Playing, it's time for Listener Mail. Topics covered include: Microsoft's corrosive effect on the games industry, favorite games, the future of the Nindies@Home program, and the value of a Wii U to a man of the road. You can send us your questions, whether you're at home or on the road, to our mailbag.

It's last call for our RetroActive: Mario Tennis: Power Tour! Comments have been light, so please  post your thoughts on the game and there's a statistically high chance we'll read it on the show. We'll be covering it NEXT WEEK.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 447: Who Is Cobra Commander?
« on: October 04, 2015, 08:11:00 AM »

This isn't a rhetorical question; I need to know.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41263/episode-447-who-is-cobra-commander

The show comes down from its Mario Maker high with a nearly Mario Maker-free New Business. Spurred by the delay of Star Fox Zero, James kicks it off with a report on his first time playing Star Fox Command. He finds the control options for DS games on the Wii U Virtual Console lacking, but nothing compares to the horror that is Slippy's fiance or the canonization of Krystal. Greg has a report from Mario Maker! No, the declaration of Mario Maker-free New Business wasn't a lie; he's playing the latest DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U: The Mario Maker stage. He's also been forced by the blackened heart of Roger Goodell to buy an Xbox One, so he starts off Rare Replay with only the finest of the legendary company's output: Jet Force Gemini. Free from Jonny's constant "comments," Jon is liberated to report on Destiny: The Taken King without looking over his shoulder. It raises the questions, why would you just want to hunt loot all the time and do the same content over and over? Lastly, Guillaume is in a bit of a Mario Funk, can Konami's (RIP) early Wii title Elebits charm him back into gaming? Can he explain why Konami Europe (RIP) felt the need to rename the game Eledees just to make an LED pun? No, and no.

After the weekly trampling of sedate tones of Japanese music by the well-meaning but disastrous attempt to cross-promote NWR, it's time for Listener Mail! Topics covered include importing games to the UK, Nintendo merchandise collecting, Nintendo merchandise rejection, making new IPs, marketing new IPs, and James' life-altering advice on Visual Novels. Most people promise to alter your life in exchange for money but we will alter your life forever for just the price of sending us an email!

It's time for our RetroActive Jr. on Mario Tennis: Power Tour and we hope you'll play along with us. We will be talking about it on episode 449 so hurry and post your thoughts, questions, and observation in the forum thread.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 446: Black Hatred in Vague Human Shape
« on: September 27, 2015, 10:46:00 AM »

The Super Mario Maker circle is complete and we reveal the winner of our Mario Maker-inspired RetroActive poll.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41224/episode-446-black-hatred-in-vague-human-shape

Radio Free Nintendo is back at full strength, and Jon gets his first opportunity to talk Mario Maker, but first in New Business Guillaume talks about the demo for the Atlus-published 3DS game redundantly titled Legend of Legacy. Not to spoil it but it looks like his pre-order is safe. Next James and Greg talk about Plague of Shadows, the recently-released addition to last year's outstanding retro-focused action title Shovel Knight. As it turns out, it would be a pretty great value even if the price wasn't free. Finally, New Business turns back to the act of Making Marios. Jon has some early thoughts, having only had limited time to dig in, but the rest of the team has more thoughts to build on last week's conversation.

After the always-ill advised Now Playing break, Radio Free Nintendo makes a triumphant return to the recently-neglected mailbag. Questions address what games to give a skilled - but not yet literate - child to play; the role of new Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima; GameCube emulation on Wii U; and the troubles of living free and easy in a world full of HR representatives. We love your questions, so keep sending them to the mailbag.

It's time for RetroActive Jr! The "winner" of our impossibly close poll was Mario Tennis: Power Tour! You can start playing with us right away and post your thoughts in the forum thread, and maybe we'll read them on the air.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 444: Toys-to-Afterlife
« on: September 13, 2015, 10:58:27 AM »

Disney may have Infinity, but Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer provides the truest look into the unlimited expanse of oblivion.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41144/episode-444-toys-to-afterlife

Greg took the week off to watch his beloved New England Patriots kick-off the NFL season with a win, so Team RFN is joined this week by print journalist and independent game developer - and friend of the show - Syrenne McNulty.

Syrenne starts off New Business with a duo of Toys-to-Life games. First she describes Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, a game that enables you to engage in the Sisyphean task of designing the same plot of land, over and over. She follows with Disney Infinity 3.0, an "everything but the kitchen sink" style of Toys-to-Life game that serves as a palate cleanser and a positive example to some of its lesser peers. Meanwhile, Gui has found himself looking for co-op experiences. He explores Astral Breakers, a Wii U eShop multiplayer puzzle game, and then returns to Wii U classics Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros. U. The question is, are they REALLY classics? Jon revs his engine with Excitebike Vs., now with actual saving. Is Nintendo's first level editor a stealth tease for how RFN is going to cover their latest? No. Lastly, James attempts to give some advice to people who want to play Metal Gear Solid V, but wonder if they should try to catch up first. Like all conversations in Metal Gear Solid, it goes on far too long.

After an unusually deep Now Playing, it's an all-news Listener Mail. Nintendo and their partners made last week especially newsworthy, and our listeners answered (especially one wise and dashing listener). Questions touch on the announcement of Pokémon GO, Ace Attorney 6, and Pikmin 4. They also probe the lack of Nintendo Directs, and such inquiries are answered using nebulous "sources." Questions even cover Nintendo's recent trend of improving games in significant ways, after the review cycle is completed.

You can send your questions to the RFN mailbag. You can also send us your Super Mario Maker codes and end music suggestions. Lastly, it's time for you to vote for our Super Mario Maker-inspired RetroActive. We received so many suggestions that we changed some of our plans; you can read about that and vote here.

Thanks to Syrenne for joining us this week.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 443: Autumn of Too Many Leaves
« on: September 06, 2015, 09:44:00 AM »

If Nintendo puts out some games we won't have to keep finding names for this.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41104/episode-443-autumn-of-too-many-leaves

The calendar rolls into September, and RFN keeps rolling with New Business. First up Gui has a duo of party-game hybrids: Wii U party platformer Runbow and Wii relationship-decimating party RPG Dokapon Kingdom. Next up, Jon covers himself in paper cuts on the jagged 3D models of otherwise-classic Treasure shooter Sin and Punishment, now available on the Virtual Console. Greg discovers what he's fighting for with Mega Man X4. Lastly, James gives an update on LBX and before diving head first into long-running RFN gag Tube Slider. You can see James suffer in the tubes in the New Business Preview.

After the break, it's a trio of Listener Mail questions. Spurred by the sudden announcement of Amazon selling Wii U and 3DS digital games, the show launches into a discussion of potential new features Nintendo could add to their network in the near future, and what should be expected on NX in particular. An innocuous question about good introductory RPGs predictably spirals into infighting. Lastly, we have an inside baseball discussion over the obligations and best practices of video game journalism (thanks to Neal and Donald for their help with this question).

Just a reminder, we're getting ready for our next Retroactive: Mario games not featured in Mario Maker. Keep in mind, this is literally ANY game in which Mario makes ANY appearance. You can send your suggestions for the poll, your mailbag questions, or end music suggestions to the RFN Mailbag.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 442: You Got to Have a Fall Guy
« on: August 30, 2015, 03:00:46 PM »

Jon Lindemann's got to know we're going to get him out.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41057/episode-442-you-got-to-have-a-fall-guy

It is a great time to be alive! RFN Season 5 is now fully up and running and The Summer of Too Hot for Games, brought to you by Nintendo of America, is over! James kicks off New Business with LBX: Little Battler eXperience. He's got some big news for fans of Capcom classics Mega Man Battle Network and Gotcha Force. That news? You probably ARE James Jones and you should look into LBX. Greg is seeing the world in a new dimension with 3D Gunstar Heroes and 3D Streets of Rage 2. Someone is still releasing classic games on the 3DS eShop; it just happens to be Sega. Guillaume has a game that many of you many not realize you already own, Woah Dave! for Wii U - which is free if you already own the game on 3DS. He also gives his early impressions of Final Fantasy VII, as played on a PSP Go(!); this show strives to be at the forefront of gaming. Lastly, Jon has reconnected with the world of Madden, with Madden 16. Is EA's game design strategy three yards and a cloud of dust, or are they spreading out their receivers?

After the break it's the first feature discussion of Season 5: a reflection on system end-of-life release lineups. The crew steps through the games released in the last 18 months of each Nintendo system (through the GameCube), and picks out their favorite titles. Along the way some curious trends show up. In true RFN fashion, nobody can agree on what the end of the Game Boy's life was, we all found the GameCube wanting, and there is yet another reference to the podcast's favorite NES trivia question.

In other news, it's that time again: we're getting ready for our next Retroactive feature. RFN is excited about the impending release of Super Mario Maker, perhaps to a fault. However, it seems like Nintendo has forgotten some of Mario's past accomplishments when putting together this tribute to the plumber in red. So, here is the topic for our next Retroactive: Games on the Virtual Console featuring Mario that are NOT represented in Super Mario Maker (i.e. Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros.). Any use of Mario sufficient. With all that said, we aren't ready to announce a poll. We need your help picking the candidates! Send us your suggestions for the next Retroactive, your questions, your comments, or your suggestions for our ending music to the RFN mailbag. We'll announce the poll alongside the launch of Super Mario Maker, on September 11.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 441: The Model of Efficency
« on: August 23, 2015, 10:43:32 AM »

The Thunder Round has gained some new Lords.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/41014/episode-441-the-model-of-efficency

Greg, Gui, James, and Jon are settling into their new podcast reality, and as always start the show with New Business. Jon goes first with a duo of Virtual Console impressions: Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse; meanwhile society's yearning for Castlevania Pinball is met only with Pachislots. Next up, James does some Project Treasure-related digging into Bandai Namco's Free-to-Play strategies, with Ace Combat Infinity. Infinity, as it turns out, is an apt description for the amount of time it takes to do anything without paying. Greg follows with impressions of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards from the Wii U Virtual Console, reopening old wounds over the quality of various Kirby titles. Lastly, Guillaume has impressions of linear Real-Time Strategy titles Castlestorm and Swords & Soldiers, completing his quest to find out if the best wars are fought on rails.

After the break, we have the first Thunder Round listener mail segment of Season 5. James, in his new capacity as host, set an ambitious target for this foursome's first crack of Thunder: 10 emails in one hour. Too many topics are covered to list them all here. Questions range from RFN seasonal naming conventions to corruption in Canadian sport. Nintendo is also discussed, if that's important to you. Of course, the most vital question can't be answered until the end of the show: was James' forced march a success? Listen and find out.

If you want to make us step just a little quicker, you can send us a question or comment here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 440: Indefatigable Podcast
« on: August 16, 2015, 10:11:01 AM »

Season 5's got a fresh new look, with the same great RFN taste.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/40963/episode-440-indefatigable-podcast

Episode 440 is the start of Radio Free Nintendo: Season 5. While Jonny's departure is still fresh, Jon, Gui, and new host James are joined by RFN's (sort of) newest member - Mr. Greg Leahy.

While change may be in the air, RFN still starts the way it always has - New Business. Greg kicks off the show, having just recently acquired Splatoon, with a fresh perspective on Nintendo's online paint-shooting, squid-jumping, kid-being game. Jon also has Splatoon impressions, giving his take on the game's Tower Control mode. Gui continues the Squid Parade with his thoughts on the latest Splatfest (Team Hot Dog got robbed) before getting the show out of the ink with his thoughts on Never Alone, a puzzle platformer that explores the culture of Alaskan Native peoples. James wraps up New Business with his thoughts on Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, Koei's 1994 sailing game set during the Age of Exploration. You can see more of that here.

After the break it's time for Listener Mail. First up is a new question about NX: has it inspired more speculation than previous Nintendo consoles? Next, a very special listener wants us to talk more about Quality of Life, and if its still a thing. Our third question asks for a look behind the curtain, why does RFN tend to cut discussion of non-Nintendo games a bit short? Lastly,in light of Nintendo's termination of Chris Pranger (following his less-than-flattering apperance on another podcast), a mysterious listener wants to know if Nintendo is too private and if there's any reason to think they're going to change anytime soon.

If you have a question for our intrepid foursome, or just a topic you want us to talk about it, you can send let us know right here.
