Watch HDTV over at somebody's house who subscribes to Comcast or DirecTV HDTV.  ESPNHD looks so good you'll want to have a tender, private moment with yourself.  Non-sports programs look much better as well.

SDTV vs. HDTV is like VHS vs. DVD.  Once you get the new technology, you'll never go back.

Anyone else find the inclusion of "i" in the title going a little too far??

iDon't know what you mean.  But then again, iTend to be pretty slow on picking up on such things.

I may actually import one of these from Play-Asia if the price isn't too outrageous.  Can you smell video blog entry?  Maybe I could combine it with my never-completed Space Invaders Extreme paddle demonstration.  That would be EPIC.

TalkBack / Re: Why the DS is Dominating the Portable Market
« on: October 04, 2008, 02:21:29 PM »
Really that is all I can think of now but the biggest factor is the amazing variety and depth the system has for gamers of all kinds.

Totally agree.

Want an RPG?  Final Fantasy III, IV, Dragon Quest IV, Sonic Chronicles, The World Ends with You, Chrono Trigger is coming soon, Dragon Quest V is coming soon, and the almighty Dragon Quest IX is lurking on the horizon...

Want puzzle games?  Meteos, Planet Puzzle League, Tetris DS, Picross, Professor Layton, Puzzle Quest, CrossworDS...

Want Nintendo franchises?  Mario Kart DS, Pokemon Diamond Pearl, New Super Mario Bros., Kirby Canvas Curse, Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Yoshi's Island DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Zelda: Phantom Hourglass...

Want hardcore shooters?  Contra 4, Bangai-O Spirits, Nanostray 1 & 2...

I could literally go on and on.  In terms of game quantity and quality, the Nintendo DS has the best software library of any handheld, ever.

General Gaming / Re: Anybody buying NHL 09 for the 360?
« on: October 04, 2008, 01:58:03 PM »
A buddy of mine who bought the game actually figured out how to score, and said that he was score at a clip of about six goals a game.  I recall that he said you actually have to work a little to set up scoring plays. You can't just ride in there like a one-man army, or consistently go to the corner trying to set up one-timers with a guy in front of the goal.

I think the key is to move the puck around the perimeter quickly.  Get a guy down low, then pass it up to one defenseman by the blue line, have him pass it across to the other defenseman, and then pass it quickly to a guy cutting in front of the net.  In other words, you have to keep the defense on its heels with rapid puck movement (just like real hockey).

Let your team set up in the offensive zone, and then pass it around - A LOT.  I'm going to try this to see if I get any different results.

It's not pointless because you'll have considerably lessened load times, and you won't have to stream data off the DVD disk.

The Halo 3 save data issue was actually a bug with Halo 3, not a problem with the transferring of data itself.  There was (is?) a bug in the save data creation that prevented it from being able to be loaded from anything but the hard drive it was originally created on.  Meaning that if you transferred your save data onto a Memory Unit and took it to your buddies' house, or transferred it to a different hard drive (e.g. moved it from the 20GB to the 120GB drive), you could no longer resume your saved Campaign game.  I'm not sure if they ever fixed this.  When it happened to me I wasn't very deep into the Campaign, so I just deleted my data and started over.

You bet.  Have you figured out how to score?  I'm playing Be A Pro mode and I can get the odd assist, but I can't score for the life of me.  And that's not good when I'm a left winger.

I actually have no opinion apart from "eh".

Yeah, it's a neat little device, but it's a neat little device in a sea of neat little devices.

Sega should do something like, you know, concentrate on making good games again.

I'd expect that the vast majority of people on this board don't buy used games (since we want to support the industry), but judging by the amount of money that Gamestop makes off of used games, in the world overall we're the minority.

I refuse to get an HDTV until it costs $250 and ISN'T MEANT FOR A COMPUTER.

Friggin... keep my TVs the same price, and keep them separate from my computer monitors!

My point is that HD isn't some impossible dream for the rich.  If you want it, you can easily get an LCD display that does 1920x1080, and voila, you have an HD display.  Now if you want it to be the family TV that's obviously not adequate, but for a PC monitor/gaming monitor 24" is fine.

I guarantee that the next TV you buy will be an HDTV.  There's no reason not to get one at this point, unless you're a Luddite.

I'm sure he gets a lot of sun running through the city with Doc beside him on a bicycle.

You could do local multiplayer as a split-screen time attack to see who can beat a fighter the fastest.

For online multiplayer, they really need to include a create-a-fighter mode that allows you to make some hilarious creations.  I would structure a system that would let you register in a weight division, and then have a regional ladder system that allowed you to fight three or four people for a lower belt, fight three more and win a belt, fight three more and win the championship.  Like a regional tournament, and then once you win the championship you can fight whoever you want, or enter world tournaments.

Well if you read it carefully it can be only be played off the Wii internal memory for probably more than one reason but the biggest reason for them is if it could be played off the SD card it will be a security breach so in order to compensate they will make the moving more streamlined and less annoying which is fine by me.

This is all they need to do as far as I'm concerned.  I never had a problem with the Wii's small onboard memory, just the incredibly annoying process of moving stuff back-and-forth from the Wii to the SD Card.

I'll give it a shot as well, although I'll have no idea what's going on.  I'll be Amy.

The Cubbies indeed own Chicago.  The White Sox are second-class citizens, ask anyone that lives there.

It depends what you want to do.  I game on a 24" Dell HD LCD monitor that I also use as a computer monitor.  Works like a charm, and the monitor only cost $600.  It's even cheaper now.

All I'm saying is that HD does not necessarily mean $2500 SuperTV.  You can easily do it on a budget.

I think this makes perfect sense.  Up to this point there's really been no true incentive to buy new games unless you insist on having them on release day.  Those that buy new games have been getting screwed over by the used market to a degree, since they pay a premium price but get no true reward in return.  It's nice that new buyers will actually get meaningful bonuses that used buyers can't get.  In my eyes, that's completely fair.

You can already get 19" HDTVs (720p) on Amazon for $300.

They need it now.  I did some fridge-cleaning to accomodate Bomberman Blast and felt like stabbing myself in the eye.  Copy, delete, copy, delete, copy, delete, copy, delete...it's maddening.  Also the fact that there's no progress bar to show you where you're at in the copying process is so lame.

I think they'll play better once they're on the road.  This looks like a case in which a team is actually intimidated by playing in front of their home crowd because of the immense pressure and expectations on them to win.  They're playing really tight.

The point of having a large HD is so that you have hard drive space to waste.  In other words, you don't have to constantly think, "Do I have room for this game on my HD?"

With the fall 360 update you'll be able to copy games directly to disc and play them off the hard drive (which is brilliant).  With that in mind, 120GB isn't as big as it used to be.  Sony will probably allow this on the PS3 at some point, which means I'll be copying over select games (I'm looking at you, Metal Gear Solid 4 and your intolerable in-between-level installs).

I don't believe so.  I've tried, but it's never worked.

If you want tournaments, hop online.  Playing in a 12-race tournament is just too awesome.

My favorite game mode is probably Zone...totally hectic, and the scenery is beautiful in a weird, animated way.

Also, the british accent on the tutorial/narrator makes it awesome as well.  It feels very Monty Python inspired given that (I know, it's just how they talk =P ) and the cut out animation style of the intro.

So you're saying each copy of LBP ships with a little Greg Leahy inside of it?  Now THAT is next-gen.
