TalkBack / Re: Marvelous Loses Money on Wii Projects
« on: November 19, 2009, 04:26:37 PM »
Correct, for some reason Marvelous did not disclose US numbers for Muramasa.

Also, two of the PSP games were visual novels, one was a remix of an existing game, and one was a sequel that re-used an existing engine.  All very cheap to make.  The Wii games were much more ambitious (and costly, apparently).

I don't make up artificial challenges in a game.  I pay money to have game designers make up challenges for me, I shouldn't have to do it myself.

Geez, it's been so long since consoles have been below $250 that I forgot about the $200 price point.  That seems ridiculously cheap nowadays, but truthfully, consoles today have so much more crammed under the hood.  It's no surprise that they've all gone up in price.

Why is everyone shocked about the abundance of 1ups? It has been like that since SMW, heck SMB3! The Mario games have always been generous with lives but IMO that does not make the games lacking in challenge. Maybe less frustrating in that you don't have to restart a huge chunk of the levels but I don't really find that fun going through everything I've done before.

In Super Mario World you could stockpile 1ups for a while, but then you would hit one area that would stonewall you and you'd lose them reallly quickly.  Really great design that sucks you in and keeps you playing, because you view the difficult areas as aberrations that can't possibly be as hard as they seem.

Come on now.  Nintendo's next console will be HD, but it will be released when the hardware reaches a point that it can be sold for $250.  That price point is Nintendo's bread-and-butter.  They'll ride out the Wii until that happens, and make tons of money in the process.

I think it's safe to say that Nintendo will be the price point leader from here on out, with Sony and Microsoft battling on a platform of bang-for-buck.

Great show this week.  Nice to hear James on the show again.

To quote Greg, "James Jones is a sodding tosser"

Yeah, the boss of the first Uncharted is a guy you see once, period.  I think you maybe see him once through the course of the game, if that.

Also, if anybody's wondering, the longest that any cutscene is in U2 is 5 minutes.  There's maybe 2 or 3 of that length, and the rest are all 4 minutes or less.  Very briskly-paced game, and like Nick I felt that it was pretty much the perfect length.  Just as the gun battles were starting to drag, it wrapped up.

I'm pretty sure they kill.  Rarely, but they do.  I think you may have to shoot the enemy first, which allows them to finish it off.

Finished it tonight.  Great game, one of the best I've ever played for sure.  Storytelling is top-notch, the characters are great (it was actually good to see very little of Sully, I always thought he was kind of a weak character), and there were a lot of CRAZY set pieces in there.

Like a good action movie, I had grown so attached to the characters by the end that I was sad to see the story come to a close.  I can't wait for Uncharted 3.

I would have liked to have seen some more background on Lazaravich, though.  I felt like he was kind of a token bad guy, like he was just plucked out of the air to be "the final boss".  His character had no depth whatsoever.

My run through on Normal only netted me 65 treasures, and I know I missed one.  I spent a ton of time looking for them all, so where the hell are the rest?  Do they only show up on Hard/Crushing or something?

This one's on my Christmas list as well.  I have a bunch of great games to play though right now, so this isn't high on my priority list (neither is Modern Warfare 2, for that matter).  Also the fact that money is tight thanks to Christmas shopping and whatnot.

Retailer's Black Friday ad confirms a little something extra in the box.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=20320

As part of its upcoming Black Friday sale, U.S. electronics retailer Best Buy plans to have two special Nintendo DSi bundles that include the system and several games.  However, these bundles will be a little different this time around: the games will be DSiWare titles, and they will come pre-installed on the system.

The first bundle includes a white DSi with Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Sudoku, Brain Age Express: Math, Clubhouse Games Express: Card Classics, and Photo Clock already installed.

The second bundle features a metallic blue DSi with Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, WarioWare Snapped!, Dr. Mario Express, Mario Calculator, and Mario Clock.

The "Brain Age" bundle is the slightly better deal of the two; it includes software currently worth 2800 DSiWare points ($28.00), while the "Mario" bundle includes software currently worth 2200 DSiWare points ($22.00).

Both bundles will retail for $169.99 USD, with a limit of 1 per customer.

TalkBack / BBC and Nintendo Reveal New Wii iPlayer for UK
« on: November 14, 2009, 11:53:12 PM »
The on-demand news and radio player gets its own channel and an improved interface.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=20319

Nintendo and the BBC have announced an updated version of the news provider's iPlayer application, which will be available at 12:01am on Wednesday, November 18.

Intended to provide "catch-up" coverage (i.e. not live), the player has only been accessible as a streaming web page up to this point, available via the Wii's Internet Channel.  This new version is a Wii Channel unto itself, giving users a new full-screen interface along with improved audio and video quality.  Wii owners can download the channel free of charge, but their Wii must have its country set to UK.

The Wii-compatible iPlayer was originally released on April 9, 2008, and since that time Wii owners have made over 900,000 requests for BBC TV and radio content.

BBC and Nintendo launch new BBC iPlayer as Wii Channel

Date: 13.11.2009

The BBC and Nintendo UK today unveil a new version of the popular BBC iPlayer on Nintendo's Wii.

First made available through the console's Internet Channel in April 2008, BBC iPlayer will now be available as a dedicated Wii Channel to provide Wii users with a new, richer experience of the BBC's TV and radio on-demand catch-up service.

The new Wii Channel is expected to be available from 12.01am on Wednesday 18 November.

Since BBC iPlayer first launched on the Nintendo Wii, there have been 900,000 requests for TV and radio programmes, and this new version of BBC iPlayer for Wii has been designed to deliver a better and higher quality experience, with a new full-screen user interface allowing the whole family to catch up on TV and radio together in the lounge.

Erik Huggers, Director, BBC Future Media & Technology, said: "We're pleased that we've been able to work with Nintendo to evolve BBC iPlayer on the Wii, providing a faster, high quality and improved viewing experience.  "It's important that we offer audiences more ways to access the huge range of BBC content available, and this improved version of BBC iPlayer underlines our commitment to reaching new audiences by making BBC iPlayer available on as many platforms as possible."

David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK, added: "Our partnership with the BBC is another way in which Nintendo is looking to broaden the market for its products by offering compelling and relevant content to families.

"BBC iPlayer offers Wii owners another reason to turn their console on everyday and adds to the already established non-gaming content on Wii that includes Wii Channels for news, weather forecasts and an internet browser."

To use the new BBC iPlayer on Nintendo's Wii, Wii users should download the BBC iPlayer Wii Channel from the menu screen of Wii Shop Channel. Once downloaded, users simply click on the BBC iPlayer icon to launch the new full screen service, then select and play their favourite BBC TV or radio programme that they want to watch.

BBC iPlayer can now be accessed on an increasing number of different platforms and devices, including mobile phones, TVs and gaming consoles.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare coming to Wii 11/10/09

Content may not be sacrificed, but meaning is. Why bother with a version of a piece of art that is far and away from the author's intentional meaning? Graphical fidelity has a larger meaning here than just pretty pictures.

What's lost is the immersion factor.  Modern Warfare was so good on 360 because it was so immersive, due to its incredibly lifelike visuals and sound design.  Its controls were tight and it had some minor design innovations, but its true raison d'etre was its visceral delivery of the combat experience.  It eclipsed everything up to that point.

Take that away, and you don't have much.

That is all the Wii needs a port of a game that is older then Rygar.

Hey, don't diss Rygar!  That's one of my all-time faves.
