TalkBack / RE:Mario Kart Preview Disc Available Immediately
« on: September 15, 2003, 05:58:35 PM »
It's been days. Why the hell hasn't there been any more information on the demo disc.
I asked about it at a few stores today and no one had any idea what I was talking about. For something that's supposed to be "effective immediately" it's sure taking its sweet time.

Where did the "N5" thing come from? Is that just something the fans came up with or is it really the official code-name for the console?

"This disc is likely the same demo loaded into kiosks right now"

I haven't gotten a chance to check it out. What demos are on it?

We've been over this before.
Nintendo SHIPPED 80,000 units but a lot more than that were sold.

It wasn't a rumor. Miyamoto actually said Sonic MIGHT be in the game as a secret character. Actually, for all we know, that could still be the case too.

"GTA won't make the Gamecube be number 1, but it'll push it closer to the number 1 spot (a LOT closer) and there's nothing wrong with that."

Maybe a brand new exclusive GTA game but we're talking about a mere port here.
It's like when the XBox got MGS2:S. MGS2 was a HUGE hit on the PS2 but MGS2:S only sold modestly well on the XBox and didn't have any real effect on its hardware sales. But at least it was a temporary exclusive. This GTA3/VC combo doesn't even have THAT much going for it.
The vast majority of gamers have a PS2 and they'll buy this thing for it. The XBox version will get little attention and if there was a Gamecube version it would be COMPLETELY ignored.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Eidos drops all Gamecube support

"Eh, to tell you the truth. If Gamecube gets a total of 15 games per year, and each are outstanding. I rather have that lineup than 100 sh1tty games and 15 good games."

Yeah, I still agree with Nintendo's quality over quantity stance. The ratio just shouldn't be nearly as steep as it was with the N64 and, to a lesser degree, with the Gamecube. I think the ideal situation would be for their to be at least two great EXCLUSIVE games a month. Excepting perhaps a few of the slow months like January, June, and July. There would of coure have to be variety among them too. At least one great game of every genre per year.
Between Nintendo's growing first and second party support and its alliances with some of the most talented third-party developers, I think it could manage it. If not by the end of the Gamecube's run then certainly for its next console. It's all Nintendo would need to start doing leagues better in the console market.

"GC is doing okay for now (in terms of game selection), but if this trend keeps up, where another 3rd party publisher drops GC every other month, where will GC be in the next 2-3 years before "N5" comes out?"

But just as some really mediocre third-parties are dropping Gamecube support there are some really talented third-parties like Namco and Sega that seem to be giving it stronger support than ever and are actually having success in doing so. So I think, all things considered, Nintendo's third-party situation is improving. Losing support from mediocre developers that weren't really even supporting the Gamecube to begin with is no big deal but building alliances with the most powerful and prominent Japanese third-parties is a VERY big deal that could do wonders for Nintendo's next console.

You can't blame them.
It's already been established that only good third-party titles sell on the Gamecube and, like most third-parties, Eidos just doesn't make those.

I think Eidos is wrong in saying the Gamecube is a declining business though.
During the second quarter of the year things were bad but in July Gamecube sales almost matched XBox sales and with FZero and Soul Calibur 2 - both of which are supposably selling VERY strongly - they may have actually surpassed XBox sales in August but we won't know until the numbers are released. Things are looking good this Fall too with Nintendo's strongest and most varied line-up ever and probably a price-drop to help hardware sales too. I think, by the end of the year, all the nay-sayers will be eating their words.

"Japanese companies used to dominte the whole scene, but the industry is now being split with western gamers going for more western styled games while Japan sticks closely to its tastes. Nintendo is seemingly treating everyone as the same market while in reality they are being further alienated from Europe and North America by not appealing to the paticular tastes of casual gamers in these places."

Japanese developers may no longer completely rule the industry but they still play a crucial role in a console's success in the US. There are still plenty of Japanese developers that make games with STRONG appeal in the US including Sega, Capcom, Konami, Namco, and Square. It doesn't really work the other way around though. American developers aren't even remotely important when it comes to success in the Japanese market. So it's certainly understandable that Nintendo would want to MOSTLY concentrate on winning over the Japanese developers.

"If a Nintendo console isnt getting a port of GTA 3/Vice City... then Hell will freeze over before we get GTA 4, or 5 or whatever..."

Maybe or maybe not. Just look at what happened to MGS.
When Konami decided to make MGS2:S a temporary XBox exclusive and eventually bring it to all platform except the Gamecube, people just assumed the console would NEVER get an MGS deal but now it's getting an exclusive remake of the original. In the end, we got the better deal by far. Best of all, if MGS:TS sells well, more MGS games are almost certain to follow.
Honestly, I think Nintendo could get GTA on the Gamecube if it wanted. I'm not saying it could get GTA4/5 exclusive or anything like that but I'm certain it could get the GTA3/VC port and probably even an exclusive version of GTA.
But I think Nintendo just doesn't want it. It wants "mature" titles but in various interviews and press conferences people at Nintendo have suggested that they feel the game is a little too trashy for their taste.
Titles like RE and MGS are the kind of "mature" titles that belong on the Gamecube IMO. GTA is a different story.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Prediction about Star Fox 2
« on: September 03, 2003, 09:14:31 AM »
"Star Fox already has a built in audience, but those , for the most part, will be the only people to buy it."

I don't know. Both Pikmin and Animal Crossing were original titles with no existing audience and they managed to sell well.
If the game is as good as I think it will be, I think it will not only sell to the existing Starfox fans but make a whole horde of new ones as well.
It's not going to be a MASSIVE hit of GTA proportions or anything like that but I'm sure it will sell more than well enough to keep Namco happy.

"It will be a great game, and will be a great gaming experience. But will not sell that great because of general bias in the media toward Nintendo, even from those so called "unbiased" game magazines."

Most of Nintendo's games sell really well despite all the anti-Nintendo cr*p going around and I don't see why Starfox would be an exception.

"True a port isn't really going to help sales but the lack of a key game that the other consoles have is going to hurt sales. This is like an anti-killer app for Nintendo. It gives people another reason to NOT buy Gamecube."

I disagree. Most gamers aren't going to even notice the game isn't on the Gamecube just like they wouldn't notice if it WAS on the Gamecube. Basically, I don't think it will have any effect on Gamecube sales at all.

I remember hearing something about Nintendo working with EA to add exclusive GCN/GBA connectivity features to some of EA's sports games. Do these games have any of them? If so, does anyone know what they are?

It's actually probably for the best that they're not coming to the Gamecube. Since they're just multiplatform ports, they'd almost certainly sell poorly on the Gamecube and do more to convince people that "M" rated games can't sell on the console. At least exclusive games like MGS:TS and RE4 will likely join REmake/REO and sell well and serve as further proof that "M" rated games CAN sell on the console.
Some developers have already taken note of the surprisingly strong sales of the RE games on the Gamecube and it will be really difficult to ignore it if MGS:TS does well this Fall.

"These 2 games, alongisde Mafia could have done WONDERS for that certain "image" problem that Nintendo has."

If they were exclusive, MAYBE they would have some effect on Nintendo's image "problem" but as multi-platform titles, they wouldn't do anything. Games that are actually exclusive like Twin Snakes, RE4, and Killer 7 will do a lot more in helping Nintendo expand its appeal.

This really isn't a big deal IMO. Just about everyone already owns the GTA games. This will really only benefit the tiny percentage of gamers who ONLY own an XBox and the only people getting the shaft are the even smaller percentage of people who ONLY own a Gamecube and actually give a damn about the game.

Not all the games can be easily categorized.
F-Zero GX is essentially a first/third party titles because it was developed jointly by Nintendo and Sega. MGS:TS is kind of a first/second/third party title because Nintendo, SK, AND Konami are involved in it.
Though I think you could probably get away with just calling F-Zero GX a third-party title because it's MOSTLY by Sega and MGS:TS a second-party title because it's MOSTLY by SK.
It shouldn't really matter to us anyway what they techinically are.

"There's a lot of people that always use that arguement and it doesn't make any sense. Look at the Mario model in Smash Bros and the Link model in Soul Calibur II. Are they detailed and look somewhat realistic? Yes. Are they holding any guns? No. Both models and quite detailed without going against the original design of the character and both are still suitable for gamers of all ages. Just having stitches and pockets on his pants doesn't make Mario some sort of blood and guts GTA reject."

The point is it's all the same. If EAD's developers wanted to make realistic Mario and Zelda games, that would be different. But they don't. And if they were forced to make their games more realistic just to appeal to the so called "mainstream" audience, they might as well just go all the way and gore them up. The day Nintendo starts limiting its developers to only creating games that will appeal to the "mainstream" audience is the day I stop being a Nintendo fan.
It's not about the games being suitable for all ages or anything like that. It's about the developers getting to design the games the way they want. I don't mind that Hal wanted to make a more realistic Mario for Smash Bros and I think Link looks great in Soul Calibur. Since the developers wanted the characters to look that way in those games, it's fine. But the guys at EAD clearly have different views on what Mario and Link should look like and shouldn't have to sacrifice their visions of the games just because so many gamers only seem to want realistic graphics anymore.

495
EAD is just doing what it's always done.
Mario and Zelda games were always meant to be bold and colorful, and definitly not realistic.
Maybe the characters would appeal more to the mainstream audience if Nintendo made them realistic . . . and gave them guns and let them shoot hookers.
But it has clearly decided it's not going that route.
It's working on getting other games to appeal to people who want realistic graphics but it's keeping its classic mascot characters true to their roots and not worrying about whether people think they're "cool" or not.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:How to detect the presence of Xbox fanboys..
« on: September 02, 2003, 06:10:30 AM »
People need to just shut up and live in the now.
The current consoles still have a lot of life in them and have lots of great games still on the way. This is ESPECIALLY the case with the Gamecube. There's just no point in even talking about the next generation of consoles until we actually have some REAL information on them.

497
I think Smash Bros Melee made the Mario characters/levels out to be too realistic. There were too many textures and it took away from the light-hearted, cartoonish atmosphere that most Mario games have.
Mario Kart is EXACTLY what a Mario game should look like IMO.

Yeah, it's like 99% of third-party titles aren't worth touching anymore.
That's why I like the Gamecube. It has enough first/second party support to keep me happy and now it's getting quite a few third-party titles that are actually really good too. The PS2 and even the XBox may have more third-party support but when it comes to QUALITY third-party titles, the Gamecube is way ahead of the XBox and approaching the PS2 IMO.

It seems like Kirby has been on there forever.

Hopefully FFCC will remain on the charts for a while longer.
It would be very cool to see FFCC, ToS, and Harvest Moon which will be released soon all in the top 10. That would be very impressive for a console with a reputation for having no RPGs.

I would actually like for Namco should create a Zelda fighting game with the SC2 engine. There are plenty of characters in the Zelda universe for a fighting game. There could be a Goron,  Geruda Pirate, Zora, etc...
