I'm surprised Zelda didn't get more praise.
I'm worries that after being at THREE E3's people have begun to lose interest in it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Could Wii Sports be bundled with the Wii?
« on: May 20, 2006, 07:30:20 PM »
I think it's more likely Nintendo will include a demo disc featuring a slimmed down version of Wii sports along with demos for Zelda, Metroid, Wario, Excite Truck, Project Hammer, and maybe even a few third-party titles like
Red Steel and Trauma Center. The E3 tech-demos will likely be thrown in as well if they're not built into the console which could be a possibility.
I mean it's essential that Nintendo show people how many ways the remote can be used. No single game will do that. A collection of demos certainly would and would no doubt help spur sales of the games previewed.

It wouldn't be like the DS's First Hunt demo either.
The problem with that is it was a SINGLE demo for a game that wasn't released until LONG after launch. I hate to say it but that was kind of stupid on Nintendo's part and it probably did hurt software sales.

"The Wiimote has an accelerometer, which means that detecting whether it's being "thrust" or not is possible."

Can it detect which direction it's being thrust in?
If it can't, that's a major problem but if it CAN, I don't see it being very limited at all.
Like in a sword fighting game, it could detect vertical, horizontal, and diagnol thrusts.
On top of that, with the gyroscope it knows which angle the remote is being held which would allow the game to know the difference between a slash at an enemies legs or head. Then of course a stabbing motion with the sword would be performed with the remote pointed AT the screen/bar which would allow for even better accuracy. On top of that you could hold the sword outward and move it freely and precisely where you want it. Which was obviously the inspiration for the scene in Red Steel where you spare an enemy's life by holding the sword to his neck. You could even hold the sword/remote straight up or sideways and angle it however you want with just the gyroscopes. Perfect for fending off projectiles.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about the remote being capable of any part of that.

Numerous impressions of Sonic Wild Fire say that in that game you thrust the controller forward to make Sonic attack enemies. But it doesn't seem like that would be possible if the remote HAD to be pointed towards the tv/bar to detect depth since, in that game, you hold the controller sideways with the "pointer" pointing off to the side.

230
"But the Wii controller detects depth by detecting and comparing several signals from the Sensor Bar, probably measuring the angle between two IR rays is my guess.
This means that it can function like a full 3D mouse AS LONG AS it can detect the sensor bar out of it's front window."

I see what you mean.
It just seems like it's been suggested that the remote has to ALWAYS be pointed at or near the sensor bar for it to work. I'm just not sure if that's really the case.
It's been confirmed that pointing the Wii-mote too far away from the bar will lose your cursor position in games like Metroid and Red Steel.  When that happens, it apparently resets itself after a second or two. People act like it's a technical limitation but it could simply be in the programming. Afterall it has to take into account that in real life situations you might move from one end of the couch to the other, switch chairs, or even pass the remote to another player. If the sensor bar could indeed detect where the remote is pointed even if its pointed far from the bar (like straight down or even towards the player) imagine the frustration of having to try and figure out where to aim the remote to get the cursor to reappear on screen. Having it reset itself when the Wii-mote is pointed too far out of range just makes sense.

Didn't a developer of Trauma Center say the game would involve "depth" and gave the example of thrusting the controller forward and backwards to simulate a defibrillator?

If the technology at work can indeed detect the tilt/rotation of the of the controller, where it's pointed, and how far away from the sensor bar it is - it can more or less do everything a 3D mouse could even if it technically isn't one.

As for the example of it not being able to detect where in the room the Wii-mote is upon boot-up. Does you're computer know where on your desk your mouse is when it boots up?

TalkBack / RE:Mega Man on Wii?
« on: May 16, 2006, 05:59:36 PM »
A 3D Megaman could actually work on the Wii.
Use the analog stick to move around and the Wii-mote to aim the blaster.
This would allow for running and aiming at the same time without needing a dual analog setup which I can't imagine would ever work for the game.

This could actually be kind of cool.
I would love to see the game with an angled 3D view, cell-shaded graphics, Wii-mote controlled launcher, and 4P support with online play. And of course a budget title price of no more than $30.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Star Fox DS
« on: May 15, 2006, 11:04:30 PM »
Seems like touch-screen control would be perfect for Starfox.
It's not like using the touch-screen as an analog stick to control a character in a 3D platformer.
It would be more like aiming in Metroid Prime Hunters which worked quite well IMO.
Basically using the touch-screen as a mouse pad to move a cursor. Allowing for much quicker movement and precise aiming that a d-pad would not allow.

We're getting an exclusive Sonic and Monkey Ball title from Sega.
Exclusive FF and DQ spin-offs from Square-Enix.
An exclusive RE title from Capcom.

These are some of the biggest third-party franchises. I don't see what the problem is.

Tony Hawk and Madden have already been mentioned. Two of the most popular franchises in the US.

I believe Rayman is exclusive as well.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Elebits, what the fudgesicle?

"Isn't it supposed to be a launch game?"

Actually, I do seem to recall hearing that.
So maybe the game will just suck.

I think the game was just shown WAY too early. It's obvious a lot of imagination and creativity is going into this game, it just didn't come through very well in the lame E3 demo.

The E3 demo took place in a setting that was so mundane and boring.
Hopefully the real game will feature more colorful fantasy environments like in the art.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Metroid...at launch!
« on: May 13, 2006, 08:20:02 PM »
I think TP would have underperformed as a Gamecube title for obvious reasons but as a Wii launch title, I suspect it will be the best selling Zelda since Oot.
Inferior graphics and a lack of Wii-mote controls could have hurt it but neither is an issue.
Gamecube title or not, it's better looking than any other Wii title other than maybe Smash Bros and Nintendo even made the extra effort of adding Wii-mote controls.

Getting to wield a virtual light saber complete with sound effects will make the Wii a must-have for every Star Wars geek on Earth.

Aren't horse-racing games like strangely INCREDIBLY popular in Japan?
Despite it's lack of appreciation in the US this could be a killer app in Japan.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rumor: Wii launch price $249, VC details
« on: May 10, 2006, 08:55:59 PM »
Somehow I doubt there will be set prices.
I mean should Mario 64 cost as much to download as Superman 64?
I think it will be more based on the demand for the title.
Like Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games will be fairly pricey while lesser known titles especially from third-parties will be MUCH cheaper.
I think the minimum price will be $1 while the absolute maximum will be $10 however.
I suspect Nintendo will also impliment some kind of rental option and subscription fee for FULL access.

This has been the most amazing E3 for Nintendo ever.
With the announcement of Smash Bros Brawn, just about EVERYTHING I was hoping for was announced alomg with some things I NEVER would have expected but am thrilled about.
The only thing I was wanting/expecting but didn't get was Nights but I suspect it's in development  but too early to show. But the announcement of a Wii version of Resident Evil makes up for as I can't think of a game more perfectly suited for the Wii-mote. In fact I was playing RE4 just a few weeks back and thinking how incredible it would be with the new controller. I don't even care that we didn't get to SEE it. Just knowing it's coming is enough for me.

How could Nintendo not show this at the press conference?
I get that maybe it doesn't utilize the Wii-mote very well which was what the conference was all about, but this SO would have blown people's minds. All those concerns about all Wii game's have sub-par graphics would have been obliterated. The game is beatiful.

I think it's safe to assume this is basically Nintendo's "Capcom vs SNK". Only instead it's going to be "Nintendo vs every developer we can reach a deal with to include their mascots". Though I'm glad they came up with a better title. I think Snake was chosen to be THE non-Nintendo character in the demo for two reasons. Firstly to one-up Sony and secondly, to make fans drool at the prospect of who else will be included. Afterall, Konami is NOT a very Nintendo friendly developer and Snake does NOT fit in with Nintendo's usual colorful mascots.
If he's in, it's very VERY possible we could see Sonic, Pacman, Mario, Cloud, etc...

Between this and the return of Duck Hunt with (non-Orange) "zapper", I think Nintendo has gone insane and I LOVE IT!

This looks like it's exactly what I was hoping for. A very linear path-based Mario platformer.
Basically like the mini-levels in Sunshine but expanded upon.
The space setting must be Nintendo's way of lowering the frustration level. Without it beginners and the not particularly skilled would spend half the game falling into oblivion. Though it does appear that Nintendo is aiming this more at the hardcore Nintendo fans than casual or non-gamers.

The sports pack didn't have "bad graphics" just intentionally simple/cartoonish graphics. There's a difference.

I love the idea behind disaster.
A survival horror game where instead of fighting to survive against zombies, dinosaurs, demons, or whatever you're fighting to survive against mother nature. Sure it might be inspired by cheesy disaster movies but most survival horror games are inspired by cheesy horror movies.
But that scene with the tidal wave hitting the city is the most shameless rip-off since .... well, Sony's press conference the other day.

TalkBack / RE: Mario for Wii Shown Briefly and More

Ironically, TP which was developed for the GCN actually appears to be BY FAR the best looking Wii title and one of the few that can actually stand up to 360/PS3 titles.

As for Super Mario Universe.
I love the idea of the game taking place in space allowing for a unique twist on the usual platform gaming mechnanics. I'm just concerned the space setting might get old fast. Hopefully in between planet jumping, Mario will get to explore a few larger planets with blue skys.
I could see the whole space thing just being a way to travel from level to level starting with the Mushroom Kingdom. Who knows, we might even see Mario on Pop Star or Zebes. Wouldn't that be awesome?

HAMMER reminds me of the type of game we always saw in the NES days. There were lots of games at the time that may have appeared pointless and shallow but were actually quite brilliant.
