The third-pillar thing worked for a while, I don't think Nintendo ever meant for it to be a permanent thing.
I mean the DS has been out for years now and they're just NOW ready to retire the Gameboy which until recently was still selling quite well.
In fact it was still one of the top selling systems for two holidays seasons after the DS's release.

Course it is worth noting that, in the original Sonic titles on the Genesis, Tails and Knuckles and even DR ROBOTNIK all ran as fast as Sonic. I'll never forgot blowing up the doc's robot only to be confounded by how those skinny legs ran that fat tub to safety and Sonic WAS NOT ABLE TO CATCH HIM!!

So maybe Sonic's "king of speed" reputation has always been more hype than fact.

Just watch Wii Fitness out-sell Mario, Metroid, and Brawl combined. Don't underestimate the non-gamers and their big wallets.
I thought for sure we'd get an official announcement of a Wii Sports 2 or Wii Music though. I mean either would be a guaranteed HUGE seller among non-gamers who seem to love any game with the word "Wii" in the title.

I'm all for a new Warioware using the Balance Board but I'd rather not see it integrated into FPSs and other traditional titles. I mean there's nothing wrong with SITTING DOWN and playing a video game.

It's kind of a catch 22. If the characters don't have any advantages over each other it will strip them of their uniqueness. If they do it will make for an imbalanced game.
The only solution I see is if there was some sort of story mode that took you through the entire series of games. Some games would require the speed of a character like Sonic while others would require balance like Mario's or strength like Bowsers'. Thus giving each character equal chance at overall victory.
But there's bound to be a way to play the games individually too. Perhaps in that mode they'll have you use your Miis instead. That way you won't be fighting over who gets the fastest/strongest character with the natural advantage. I think featuring the Miis would give the game as much appeal to casuals as featuring Mario and Sonic will to hardcores.

Also if this game has any chance at true greatness it better not be afraid of pushing the bounds of realism. There can be an "official" mode that stays true to the games but there should be another mode that allows for power-ups and hopefully more appropriate backdrops that might look like something in an actual Mario or Sonic game.

...and finally who else thinks Nintendo is going to have to come out with another EVEN STRONGER wrist-strap after this game and the inevitable damage it will cause.
I mean look at that BOWSER screenshot!!!

Stunt Race FX was brilliant for its time. It and Starfox were among the first games to use 3D polygon models.
I mean it wasn't a masterpiece or anything but how many RACING GAMES are?

156
Let's just hope this is some twisted Mario/Sonic world version of the Olympic games.
Realism could be its downfall but with Miyamoto involved I'm not too worried.
In fact maybe the game will have two modes, a realistic mode using Miis to mimic the actual games then a fantasy mode with tweaked out versions of all the games for said mascots.

I wouldn't worry too much about Sega's expectations.
I mean I'm sure they had high expectations of their recent Virtua Fighter and Sonic game on the PS3 and they sold like three copies each.

I'm being a little cautious but also optimistic. There's still the question of whether or not third-parties will jump aboard but we have EVERY reason to believe they will. The Wii is by far the cheapest and easiest console to develop for and is also selling leaps and bounds above the competition. I mean why WOULDN'T third-parties get on board? Even Sega which

The XBox 360 isn't going anywhere but its complete lack of presence in Japan is always going to hold it back. Even though it had a comparable amount of US support, the original XBox was never able to see the kind of sales the PS2 had  because it couldn't match it's support from Japanese developers. Maybe Japan isn't the most important market but it is still vital and, if it wasn't, MS wouldn't have tried (and failed) to win it over as vigorously as they did.
I suppose anything is possible but once the tides have begun to change there's usually no going back.
It happened a decade ago with the PSX surpassing the N64 and it's happening again.
Once it became clear that Sony had stolen the attention of gamers everywhere away from the previous market leader, Nintendo fans anticipated every MAJOR release claiming any one game would steal it back.
Now PS3/360 fans are in the same boat, hyping future releasing as the "turning point" when their console will rise again and crush the Wii. But, just like before, it's just wishful thinking from loyal fans who aren't ready to admit that times have changed.

TalkBack / RE: Details on WiiWare Games Coming
« on: June 27, 2007, 12:33:47 AM »
Come on. Nintendo has only just begun rolling out some of the best Virtual Console titles and its best Fall line-up ever is just around the corner on top of surprisingly good Summer line-up topped off with Samus. This year is crowded enough and anything more would be over-kill. I say Nintendo is wise to leave WiiWare for 2008. Besides extra development time means it's going to be something better than just the usual cheap, generic, soul-less garbage you often see on cell-phones.

As for why they're announcing it now.
My guess it they're going to have a few to show off at E3. And I do think by next year they mean next January or February. To counter-act the usual post-holiday drought.

Yeah it looks like Japan may end up a one horse race. Not only in the hand held market but the console market as well!!
If that happens it's a safe bet that certain Japanese developers that have been almost exclusive to Sony for years now will be jumping ship - and FAST!!
Even if the Wii does eventually face harder times in the US market, its dominance in Japan is going to turn the gaming industry as we've known it for almost a decade on its head.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The DS *could* have an analog stick added
« on: June 21, 2007, 09:21:37 PM »
Personally I found after a little practice controlling Mario in 3D was pretty easy with the d-pad.
It has a learning curve of course. But so did using the analog stick for the first time.
Actually in some levels the d-pad allowed better control. Especially the Bowser levels which mostly required running back and fourth in a steady, straight line. I do agree that the touch screen controls in the game were HORRIBLE and should have been excluded though.

Analog sticks and portables just don't mix IMO.

"Wasn't Raven Blade canceled because Metroid Prime wasn't turning out any good?"

Supposably Nintendo wanted them to focus on MP for that reason.
But if anything it's assumed that neither game was doing all that well early on and Nintendo decided the only way to get things into shape was to kill one project and have them focus full attention on the other. I think they made the right call.

I hope if this is true people don't turn it into another Raven Blade.
If the game was canceled it's most likely just because it wasn't turning out any good. Just like Raven Blade probably wasn't.
But for whatever reason when a game like this is canceled there are always people who suddenly believe it was to be the greatest masterpiece of our time that we were cruelly denied. If the game is all that great it will be released. If not then we know we're not missing much.

Perhaps Sony, MS, and pretty much everyone really was wrong.
I mean Nintendo's assessment that if all the next-gen consoles offered nothing but improved graphics people would lose interest in them seemed like BS when it was first made at a time when graphics seemed like it was ALL that mattered to the mainstream audience.
But with the 360 being beaten by the PS2 and the PS3 being beaten by the GBA of all things, Nintendo is starting to prove itself right.
I mean, imagine if there was no Wii. What would become of the game console market as we know it? The US would have the 360 which is doing ok but doesn't look like it will ever have the kind of presence the PSX/PS2 had. Possibly not even close to it, in fact. Then there's Japan which would probably abandon consoles entirely and become strictly handheld territory.
Nintendo may have very well saved the console market again, just as it did over two decades ago when Atari nearly killed it. I mean looking at these numbers it's pretty clear that a year and a half into the next generation of consoles the only thing making any kind of real impact is the Wii.

Star Fox 64 was my MOST WANTED so I'm happy....and I'm hoping it's among the first on that list to be released.

I'm not surprised to see Street Fighter 2 Turbo on there either. I KNEW THIS WAS COMING which is why I didn't download the first one.
Now I'll have to decide whether to download Turbo or wait for Hyper Street Fighter Championship Edition or whatever came after. I forget.

TalkBack / RE: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Announced
« on: March 27, 2007, 11:14:22 PM »
I'm no big Olympics fan but it will make for an interesting variety of games.
Kind of like Wii Sports.

Plus the Olympics tie in will guarantee big sells.
It's the perfect mixture of hardcore and casual gaming love. Olympics and Wii Sports style gameplay for the casuals (non-gamers) and MARIO AND SONIC for the hardcore.

I wonder if the "and more" could suggest we'll see the likes of Link, Kirby, Nights, or the Super Monkey Ball monkeys too. Could this be like Super Olympics Brothers with Mario and Sonic simply being the leading mascots? Or does it simply mean we'll see other less notable Mario/Sonic supporting characters?

A lot of people seem to take this as further evidence of Sonic being in Smash Bros but I dunno.
If anything it makes me worry it's less likely now. Like perhaps it WAS going to happen but they decided to create THIS instead.
I'm sure this game will be awesome and all but if we don't see Mario and Sonic fight it out in Brawl I'll be VERY dissapointed.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:It's a Mini Game first quarter!
« on: January 07, 2007, 08:47:44 PM »
Kirby Canvas Curse is the most underrated DS game ever.
It made full use of the touch-screen, did it well with incredibly innovative controls, had classic Kirby level design, tons of secrets and unlockables, and was one of few games that made having a second screen as a map feel like a true necessity. Not to mention the dangerously fun boss battles.

But enough of that rant.

Wario and WiiPlay are definitly mini-game collections but Mario Party is a little different.
I'd say it's more of a party/board game. Let's not forget Secret Rings either. Looks like it could be the best Sonic console game in generations. And I've heard it has a mini-game collection too for all you mini-game whores.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:3rd Parties in 2007?
« on: January 05, 2007, 08:46:36 AM »
The Wii is likely to follow in the footsteps of the DS which was scare on third-party support at start but as the console proved itself in sales and a few daring third-parties made some truly innovative and well received titles, it gained more and more and JUST LOOK AT IT NOW.
Fortunately Nintendo's own releases seem much more evenly spread out over the first year of the Wii's life than they were in the same time-span on the Gamecube. Plus we got the virtual console. Hopefully Nintendo will begin to release the GOOD games once people really start to feel the drought.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Are you ready to rumble?......nope.
« on: November 12, 2006, 12:26:48 AM »
The classic controller may not have rumble but doesn't it have the option of being attached to the Wii-mote which DOES?
I just don't buy this. Possibly a misunderstanding. I mean maybe whoever gave him this information meant the initial VC games wouldn't have rumble which makes perfect sense as none of them originally supported it.
But I can't imagine that when Starfox and Oot are released the rumble would be left out. But if it is, I'm sure they'll be re-released later with it.
Does seems like Nintendo is kind of half-assing the VC right now waiting for it to really catch on before they put too much effort into it.

TalkBack / RE:Japanese Virtual Console Line-up Revealed
« on: November 01, 2006, 03:54:18 AM »
Not worried.
I'm going to be too busy with TP and other launch titles to even think about VC games for the remainder of the year.
Eventually most if not all of the games we want will be available. It's best Nintendo save some of the big ones for the drought season anyway.
I'm sure that as more and more games are added, they will become available for much fewer points too. Eventually we'll have $1 NES games and $5 N64 games, I'm quite sure.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Getting a Wii and selling your 'Cube?
« on: October 14, 2006, 03:44:48 PM »
"There's no gaurantee that the Wii will be perfectly backwards compatable with Gamecube games."

I'm not concerned. The Wii is basically an amped up Gamecube, I can't imagine the backwards compatibility will be limited in any way.
Plus we already know it's compatible with Wavebirds and the Kongas and Dance Pad accessories.
The only practical reasons I can think of to keep the Gamecube is if you're REALLY attached to your Gameboy Player or play A LOT of Mario Kart over LAN or Phantasy Star Online.

I'm still set for Excite Bike.
The game looks like the most unique racer to come about in YEARS.
Pure Nintendo fun too.
Course if it really is only 2P that's a bummer.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Getting a Wii and selling your 'Cube?
« on: October 13, 2006, 03:48:09 AM »
I'm torn.
I too own every console Nintendo has ever made including the damn Virtual Boy. Granted half of them are in pretty poor condition and a couple simply don't fuction. But the sentimental value makes it hard to part with them. On the other hand with the Wii and its backwards compatability and virtual console there's probably no practical reason to keep them and I am considering a cross-country move so I'm better minimalizing my material possessions.
So I'm considering selling the whole load (maybe minus the VB) on eBay.
