General Chat / MARCH IS KRISS KROSS MONTH
« on: February 24, 2006, 05:32:21 AM »
Because Xbox 360 is launching, and pretty much nothing else is happening in Australia, I want to call this month after those hilarious kids who got everyone jumping around.

It all started after I saw the slogan for the Xbox 360 - Jump In! I lol'd and after that all I could say was JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! and all I could think about was happy pants and crazy hair.

I say Microsoft needs to revive those artists (and possibly their corpses, who knows where they are now) and bring out a full-blown ad campain of kids in baggy pants telling people to jump!

JUMP!

I remember the EZBoards days. I mostly lurked around but I did have an account there before the current forums opened up.

General Chat / RE:Finally, a VG movie that maybe won't suck: PJ to do Halo
« on: December 12, 2005, 05:05:55 AM »
Well there goes my idea that the Doom movie would just get released again as Halo 3. No need to change the titles or the characters even, as long as there are guns and explosions no-one will care about the lack of plot or the horrible monologues or the fact its another Rock movie.

But it'll still suck big time. As much as Doom? Big call, but its certainly possible.

Yep, I'll go and see it when I can. Nothing like a good remake.

General Chat / RE:Wrestler Eddie Guerrero Found Dead
« on: November 15, 2005, 10:31:37 PM »
Eddie died of heart failure. It happened while he brushed his teeth. It had to do with workouts and pushing himself physically resulting in his heart being unable to function. His heart just couldn't go on.

The guy is a very charismatic wrestler and will be missed by everyone. I got to see him in action when the WWE came out to Australia earlier in the year, and it was truly a sight to see him interact with the crowd after watching him on TV for so long. The fact that he's been sober and clean of drugs for four years shows how strong he is mentally.

The WWE is holding tributes to Eddie in the RAW and Smackdown shows (since RAW has already aired, go and watch the Smackdown show) and judging by the writeup of the RAW show, it truly is a tribute to Eddie.

Quote

That's pretty rare in wrestling as most wrestler deaths involve retired guys or guys working indys.

Two words: Owen Hart. That was the most recent tragedy apart from this. The Benoit-Bret Hart match that they had after Owen passed away was something really special. Go find it on the net if you don't believe me.

Quote

I wish JR had been there to announce, though.
He's still recovering from surgery. I'm sure he'd have loved to be there, and sends his love to the family of Eddie.

Hurrah for a really local news story. Hell, I can even say I've met Greg Siegele (one of the two owners of Ratbag), but that was a while ago.

It is kinda sad to see them get consumed EA-style (they're being rebadged as Midway Studios - Australia) but at least they're being supported by a big company. A few years ago they were developing a RPG-style game alongside their racing games, hopefully that game sees the light of day because it sounded like a good original IP at the time.

Apart from that, not much has changed. The owners are still working there, they're looking to hire new employees, and Booty is the most hilarious surname ever.

Quote

Ratbag brings to Midway a rare combination of development expertise in driving and on-foot combat that they are incorporating into our games now in development.

How very cool! I wonder what's going on with them currently...

As I've been saying recently, Nintendo needs to say f*ck em to the mainstreme. If people can't take care of their system enough so they won't break the harddrive it is likely it won't be long before they scratch their disks or the laser inside the system. This latest excuse from Nintendo on the harddrive sounds more like, "we're just stuborn as f*ck, so lick it, we're cheap and we are using flash memory; and Sony doesn't have either for PS3 so that makes it okay." Just because Sony does or doesn't do something does not make it okay.

Are you lost? You must be looking for the HDTV drama thread. We're talking about controllers here.

Anandtech also discussed how the processing power of the Xbox360 and the PS3 stack up to the current consoles, as well as modern CPUs like the Athlon 64 and P4 chips. Some nice technical info, and they comment on how developers feel about the new systems (no comments on PS3 though).

Right now, from what we’ve heard, the real-world performance of the Xenon CPU is about twice that of the 733MHz processor in the first Xbox.  Considering that this CPU is supposed to power the Xbox 360 for the next 4 - 5 years, it’s nothing short of disappointing.  To put it in perspective, floating point multiplies are apparently 1/3 as fast on Xenon as on a Pentium 4.

Regardless of the reasoning, not a single developer we've spoken to thinks that it was the right decision.
The second quote is about the choice for MS to use a tri-core CPU instead of a more common CPU.

But I cannot ignore that the rest of the industry including Nintendo is not focusing on original software. Nintendo seems to have led the software industry (despite the fact they didn't lead the hardware industry this gen) down a path of safe franchises. Even now I am wondering if the MS that supported original games this gen will support original games next gen. All have seen how profitable Nintendo has been in recent years. Has Nintendo really won?

The whole "safe franchise" idea cannot be blamed on the industry alone. Its more of a vicious cycle, where the gamers will buy a few games like hotcakes because it is a popular game, and the industry will react by producing more games that are similar to the 'hotcake-selling' titles, because there is little R&D required and there is a known interest/demand for that kind of game.

The cycle repeats over and over and over. There is no real motivation to make original software outside of "We'd like to make a game of style X, which there isn't much of currently on the market" because there is a big risk involved if it fails. And with the costs of developing a game rapidly increasing, fewer original software is going to appear on the shelves. Catch 22 anyone?

Considering the massive payoff that happened years ago when similar circumstances arose, I really don't think he's completely innocent.

Matt is just starting drama. I don't see how it is a trade-off, because those two components are unrelated.

Wait until some solid specs are released before you grab a pitchfork and torch, Ian. You're too eager to burn Nintendo at the stake.

It is not set in stone. Nintendo is just being realistic - the uptake of digital TV around the world is not occuring rapidly enough to justify breakthrough technology like 1080p.

Quote

one thing thta bothers me is that not having it will reduce sales...reducing profit...which may cost mroe then including the port for five dollars more.

It's not the five-dollar port that is the issue, its weighing the cost of adding the hardware that is required to output HDTV against the percentage of buyers who will have HDTV-capable TV sets. Much like the digital output was removed from PAL GCs, this probably won't affect me. Digital broadcast uptake in Australia has been disappointing (analog TV was meant to end next year) and the price of digital TV sets are still ridiculous.

I like and use the 60Hz mode that some GC games support (Burnout 3 on PS2 also looks amazing in 60Hz mode), and I'd be happy with an increase to 720p that most LCD and plasma TVs support. That resolution is beautiful on a good TV, and the difference between it and 1080p would only be noticed by technophiles who like to complain (and know what to complain about).

I'm not surprised that he was found innocent - Jackson's lawyers poked enough holes in the testimony of key witnesses to cast doubt on case of the prosecution. That was more crucial than the fact the person is famous.

Quote

I'm sick of fans of various celebrities being stupidly blind and wanting these people to get off of serious charges just because they provide some sort of entertainment.
Thanks Ms.P for saying what I meant to say. Jackson is not a stable person - he's got mental issues that any average person (ie not famous) would be encouraged or forced to seek therapy. I wonder if all these people who put Jackson on a pedestal got that same sickening feeling I did after watching part of the Bashir documentary. Eh, whatever. He might have been a great singer, but he is a total nutter.

Quote

I don't know if he did what they say he did or not, but love it or hate it, he's been "proven innocent."
No. He was found "Not Guilty" of the charges, but that does not make him innocent - no matter how hard you try to close your mind. Innocent != Not Guilty.

I want a wrestling game that controls as well as Mario with full analog control and free jumping.
Because quite clearly all wrestlers jump around like a Mario game Think of a wrestling game more like a fighting game with spandex and you'd probably enjoy it more. Analog controls would make pulling off specific moves impossible.

BG&E is one of my favorites this generation for GC, which means it is one of the few games that I own (I own about 45+ games) that actually kept my attention long enough to actually finish the game. Not only did I finish the game but I wanted more at the end, I was mad that it was over.
YES! BG&E was one of the few new RPGs this gen that I picked up and got hooked on easily. A great story, pity it ended so quickly. And no sequel either. Boo-urns.

Or a pirate game.
More Guybrush, I say. I tried playing Galleon a while ago on a demo Xbox and got angry at the controls. For some reason the decided to over-complicate movement of the hero. The first few minutes almost caused me to cry in pain. Moving on, I wonder what Lucasarts are up to these days (apart from counting all the takings from RotS)?
