Your Mac doesn't have Airport capabilities at all? Not sure how long ago they started including it as default but all the Macs I've run into recently have it.

Easiest thing to do would be to get a wireless router. Wireless and wired networks in one. What operating system you use doesn't matter.

Eh, its now doing it for me. I blame voodoo internet magic.

I was going to post that part of the article but the part that S_B posted is probably the best part. The rest is nothing new.

The link in the original article is still working for me. Maybe there was a bandwidth issue.

Wait, this isn't the game! But deep down we all know that this is the game we want.

I'll wait for Infernal to come in here and give us his pseudo-review.

Maybe, but there's also the possibility that the Wii System Code,  the code from the game, and the Mii used to play are combined and produce the Friend Code, rather than just the game itself. They haven't actually told us what information is represented by that code, or what is linked to a 'profile'.

Wait until they actually demo it. I think the system definitely has potential, and the thought of playing online games against the NWR folk would be great!

(oh yeah, i'm going to have to add more Wii system codes now that online actually has potential!)

Not at all.

In this day and age its very easy to gain attention by being an alarmist [spolier]sup al gore. The mass media runs on this method of delivering news, as it grabs the attention of the audience. And once it has the audience, it has to deliver more news that grabs the attention. Its a vicious cycle.

What disappoints me about the shootings was how quickly everyone was looking for an excuse for the tragedy. Sure, the shooter was ID'd pretty early on, but after that it looks like everyone went on wild goose chases searching for that single elusive item that links everything together. I'm sure JT will claim that he was just expressing his opinion of the matter (correct or otherwise) but his attitude towards the incident was disgusting. He trumpeted that video games produce murderers because he could spout examples from the past. He spent more time rambling then answering questions.

My opinion of the event is that it was a terrible tragedy. Like most people, I wanted to know why Cho decided it was time to slay his fellow students. When I heard that the shooter had mysterious words tattooed on his arm, i tried to understand what those words may mean, as I believe the shootings were his way of sending a message to the world (as morbid as that is). But once I saw his videos being broadcast around the world, which consisted of the angry rants and hateful message of a disturbed person, I didn't want to know any more. He managed to gain attention by manipulating the media and justifying what he did.

He knew what he was doing. And that is why I don't believe the shootings can be blamed on mental problems, as it was a premeditated and devastating act.

Quote

A friend of mine was just, today, involuntarily committed to a mental institution for evaluation, for something he wrote in class. That may not have happened if there was one rational voice out there pointing out that school shootings are very rare occurrences, and much less of a threat than, say, cars or cigarettes.

On the contrary, you look at this like its painting your friend as a psychopath. On the flipside, there is a process that goes on once he is at the institution. Its not like a hotel, you can't stay there unless you have mental problems. And even if he does, he's getting help at the place at least, rather then letting the problem manifest into various forms like we have seen.

For example, the worst shooting in Australian history was done back in the mid 90s. No-one saw it coming, not even his girlfriend. He had mental problems for most of his life (but no-one noticed), collected and stashed away guns guns (he had a couple of rifles and a shotgun at the time) and one day decided to go on a murderous rampage. Much like Cho did. But unlike Cho the authorities arrested the culprit and he's now serving 35 life sentences.

I know you are obviously angry at what happened, but mental problems are very different to cars and cigarettes. Keep us posted on how he is.

Wow, only one IDE connection. That sucks! I guess SATA is the way of the future!

You can plug a hard drive and a CD drive into the same IDE connection. The only problem is that IDE only allows devices to run as fast as the slowest device on the cable. In that case, it'll be the CD and both drives will run at ATA33, that is 33MB/s. So its not something you'll want to do regularly.

Yeah, just double check everything before you post it away for a replacement. It could be something as simple as a connection not being quite in (the BIOS messages will tell you what drives are connected, pay attention!)

Flashing a BIOS (rewriting the EEPROM memory that comes with a motherboard) is a pretty tricky thing to do normally, and if you do it wrong it pretty much renders your motherboard useless. I've only had to do it once to support hard drives above a certain size on old motherboards (and that was a pretty rare case) so I don't think its something that should be done unless absolutely necessary.

That's what I thought you did but considering it persistently boots to Windows (while you can access the BIOS menu normally) then I think its a hardware problem.

Yes, definitely replace it. I'm 99% sure that's the source of the problem.

It should be based on your system's "region", not your geographical location.

Obviously you haven't dealt with lag issues before.

Some games work reasonably well with lag such as MMOs, but sports games, well, that's a different story.

How old is the motherboard? I'd see if I could get it replaced because it doesn't seem to be working right. You didn't do anything out of the ordinary like "flash" the BIOS or give it a nice surge of electricity, did you?

Yeah, sounds like a terrible situation to be in.

First off, how far into the Windows process does it get before you have to reboot? Do you see the Windows logo at all?

I can't see why you can't boot from a CD if you are able to start booting Windows, but obviously I'm only going by what you're telling me.

Normally pressing Del when you are starting up (well before you boot Windows) should get you into the BIOS - from there you can tell the BIOS to boot from CD first, then Windows.

Secondly, how valuable is the stuff on the Windows partition?

You've got a few choices that vary in terms of the work and luck required.

1. Boot into Safe Mode (F8 when you see the Windows screen, then a bunch of startup options appear). This will give you some debugging and load a minimal Windows environment so you can isolate the source. Perhaps the resets will still occur, but perhaps you'll get to actually read the error message.

The other choices depend on booting from a CD. Not sure why you can't get into the BIOS and change the boot order as it always starts up before Windows does.
Anyway:

2. Reinstall Windows on the old partition - replaces the contents of C:/Windows with all the Windows-related files - including the registry - which means you will need to reinstall everything, but you won't lose any data outside of the Windows directory. This may fix the problem or it may not, but it could give you the time to backup your stuff and reformat.

3. Wipe the partition (Windows install CD or your average Linux live CD can help you with this) and reinstall Windows - clears everything on that partition. All the stuff that is on there will be gone, but the problem will be gone.

What concerns me is the error message. Do you have the original CD for the motherboard drivers? What often happens is that Windows installs the best match it can find for a piece of hardware, which may work fine, but is hardly foolproof. The best thing to install is the driver on the CD, as that is what the manufacturer recommends you use. If there is an updated version of that driver it would appear in Windows Update, but aside from that (unless you're using Vista - for example the nVidia drivers have some bugs which are affecting some games in Vista and Vista only) that the CD drivers are sufficient.

How about looking at the Friends Code section or even the Wii Friends Code thread?

I don't check these sites often, sometimes Kotaku. And if I'm really craving lowest-denominator Nintendo news then I'll check GoNintendo. Byte-sized news only goes so far.

Kotaku do a similar thing, but at least they will summarize the article in their own words and discuss it briefly (giving me an idea of whether I want to read the article itself). I don't see anything insightful from GoNintendo posts.

Ok, there's one real issue with this aside from displaying other people's hard work - revenue. If you don't have to visit the source of the site then they don't get visitors. GoNintendo is giving you the news directly from someone else's mouth - generally without the need to visit the source. And GoNintendo get hits in turn, which generates more money for them, while the source gets nothing.

I rather the slashdot type of aggregation where a blurb is displayed and any media (images, youtube vids, details) are then linked to. This makes it fair for both the original source and GoNintendo, as they both fulfill a role in the process of getting information to you.

3. The people who normally comment are even worse and I honestly hope they trip and fall on something. I add my two cents very rarely on the site and the reason is that fanboys are set and ready to ravage your penis or vagina if you say anything moderately anti-Nintendo.

Comments posted anywhere on the Internet are ripe for mockery or debate. Suck it up and fight words with more words.

4. People are disrespectful all over the internet, that includes NWR. I've noticed some pretty vile comments to new forum members since finally upgrading my lurker status to posting member last year. There's definitely a "Get a clue, noob" vibe around here as if you must earn your stripes or something. That's no different than most anywhere else online though. So while I generally agree with Deguello, I kind of feel like it's expected.

I have no problem with newbies or people who stop lurking and decide to start posting. I do have problems with people who post stupid things without doing a bit of research of engaging their brain slightly - like this gem - so I do believe that respect in a community like NWR or another forum is earned, not given. Posting style goes a long way to building a good rapport with others.

I'll certainly keep an eye on this.
