Nintendo Gaming / RE: It's official...

I could get a used e-reader and about 5 of those games for that price.  Seriously though, the only reason I can see anyone wanting any of these is if they have no other way of getting them, or they just want to collect them. Other than that, no point.

SMB3 changes from the original.
More coins.
More 1up possibilities
Floating Spade card on map appears a LOT more frequently
Some fire spitting pirahna plants were changed to regular
In world 6, you no longer have to beat that one level to get to the mushroom house, they gave it an alternate path.
Boo didley moves A LOT slower now.  (WHY?!?!?!  BOOOOOOOO)
Instant special power when small if you touch a fire flower or leaf.  Used to just be the equivalent of the mushroom if small.

However, I can think of a couple changes that went the other way:
It's harder to defeat bowser now cuz the spot you have to stand in a slightly different spot  to make him crush the right blocks.
Especially noticable in the sky levels, because of the screen, Lakitu and the mad sun is positioned lower than in the original, making it slightly tougher to avoid their attacks.

On a slightly unreleated note, anyone remember what they did with Level 5 on LTTP for GBA?  LOL

I would like to see a Castlevania GC, but only if someone else made it.  I'm not too sure I can deal with Iga making another one.

I doubt the person who designed this crap... i mean apparel has ever played a videogame before.  "FIGHTER" with a few arrow keys plastered underneath the lettering?  "FPS"?  This has got to be some of the most generic, uninspired design I've seen in a while.  It looks like someone design student's first project rather than something worthwhile. I wouldn't be caught dead in any of it.

About SMA4 e-reader support.  It's really a shame that we didn't get anything beyond series one and two.  Through a friend of mine, I've managed to play the other 20 or some new levels that have been released since 1 and 2.  It makes me wish the e-reader and the series 1 and 2 cards did better here cuz some of the levels are truly awesome. Having the cape feather and the Mario World item box doesn't hurt either .

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Why does Konami hate GC?
« on: June 11, 2004, 09:20:21 PM »
Wow, I completely forgot about Mystical Ninja.  Add that to my good list.  However, I still stand on my point.  Konami on the N64 wasn't anywhere close to Konami on the NES, SNES, or PS1.  I'm still reeling from their lineup to this day, especially NBA ITZ and Nagano Winter Olympics 98.  That fighter didn't help either (despite the somewhat interesting concept), especially coming off the phenominal ISS.  I dunno, it's just that at one point in time Konami seemed to be synonomous with quality and these days I just don't get that wow from them anymore.

Give me the original Mario 1 over the SNES port anyday.  Yeah it's prettier and all but they completely messed up the way bricks are bashed on it.  You're not supposed to actually bust through them.  Other than that  2 and 3 were vastly superior.  As far as the advances go, I really didn't have that much of a problem with them.   I think the only advances that kinda bothered me were SMA1 and 2.  1 because of the extra heart and obsene 1up opprotunities all over the place, and 2 because of the near invincibility the bros. had now because taking a hit in fire or cape mode didn't shrink them completely anymore.  3 and 4, despite a little easing up on the difficulty were still good enough to go IMO.  As far as voices go, the only one that ever really bothered me was Toad in SMA1.  Other than that I actually felt that it added a little extra charm to the games.

I remember the Konami of the NES, SNES-Genesis era and I don't even believe I can count the amount of great titles they used to come out with, LICENSED or original.  The N64-PS1 era comes around and while they still made their share of hits (MGS) I felt like they started slipping. This is especially true for the N64, where the only game on there where it seemed like Konami actually gave two craps for was ISS64. (unfortunately didn't play the rest though I heard they were all good)  Save for Castlevania 64.5 which I feel was OK at best the rest of their lineup was complete trash.  Now from this, they're gonna stereotype an entire userbase of gamers as not liking their games just because their N64 titles sold like crap despite the fact they have noone to blame but themselves?  As of late I've honestly come this close to saying the heck with Konami.  They've lost a good portion of their original talent to Treasure, and sadly I can count the amount of good games they've made since the late 90's with only one hand.

" I don't understand Konami at all either. I mean the didn't even make an effort to push MSG:TS."

From my understanding, they didn't exactly push the game so that they wouldn't take too much away from Snake Eater.  As far as I'm concerned, as much as I like the game I just have to ask, Why put SK through that if you really didn't intend for it be advertised or to sell?  I mean, it sounds like they just wasted SK's time and abilities.

As for putting the next one on X-Box next?  WTF indeed.  Why not port LOI to the cube and give it a shot there?

But the live support was still being worked on.  Even if that was the case, I still can't see a game like that working on Live or anyone current connections.   Most people I've talked to already say CvS2EO live is either hit or miss, and that's a lot less complicated of a game (not strategically speaking) than MvC2 is.

And the industry gets dumber and dumber every day...

"Best of show = PSP. With its "spectacularly large and bright screen" it will apparently initiate a revolution in handheld gaming..."

Can somebody tell me what's supposed to be so special about this thing?  I thought for sure it took more than a backlit screen to be revolutionary.  Guess I was wrong again.  From what I'm hearing, all this thing supposedly is is a PS2 in a handheld form with a bunch of crap added to it.   I swear if the DS loses to this, I just might consider finding a new hobby.
It's interesting how in this industry the focus seems to be steering farther and farther away from the games each generation.

That game was actually a port of the old X68000 version of Akumajo Dracula that was only released in Japan back in the mid 90's. By the way, the NTSC version got those interviews too.  I don't believe the game did too well sales wise, and with the bombing of LOI, I doubt we'll see anything Castlevania related for a while.  IMO the last good Castlevania game was COTM. HoD just sucked, and while AoS was better it was still apparent that they basically microwaved it real quick and then fed it to us. I'm not going to even get started on LOI, it's like they had no clue as to where to start with it.  It's kind of funny too, because I remember IGA saying all this drivel about how Castlevania 64 and it's upgrade were absolute crap and that LOI would be a million times better.  Well, it's out and like someone else said the only thing that's even kinda saving the game is the music.

Let's break this down...
A.  Nintendo has NEVER ignored online gaming.  The last three consoles have actually had it in some form.  It's just never took off for various reason, profitability being only one of them.  Personally, the way I see it.  If it's not free or at least 90% lag free, I see no reason to screw with it.  And before anyone goes screaming that they want to see someting like SSBM online, think of this.  When Capcom ported over Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for the X-Box, they completely scrapped the live support! Why, cuz it didn't run good enough and still wouldn't.
B. That's a load of crap.  Save for SK,  there's nothing Factor 5 and Rare could do that Retro couldn't do 10x better.  Besides, look at Rare now.  Do you really think they'd have been that beneficial.  Especially after pretty much bombing with SFA.
I have absolutely no problem with their current lineup.  IMO they're some of the best games they've released yet.
C.  Yeah, lets give the thing a DVD drive, or heaver forbid, a rewritable drive so people can just pirate the games to death.  Remember, this is Nintendo we're talking about here not Sony or Microsoft.  Even though they do make their own games as well, the potential for widespread piracy of a big name title of N's would probably set them back farther than it ever would've have with the other two.
No comments on the second point for now.
You know, this wouldn't even be so much of a problem if almost every developer wasn't trying to fit an entire DVD movie's worth of largely pointeless FMV on the disk.  And can somebody please tell me what the heck is wrong with using more than one disk all of a sudden?
Why in the world would I ever need to brag about having a console of all things.  You're not gonna be any cooler with a PS2 or X-Box.
D.  Last I checked there were plenty of "mature" titles on the cube.  Oh, and no Nintendo game will never be "kiddy", just plain fun for those without insecurities.
Well, then go get one of the other consoles then.  Most people do have at least 2 of them these days.
E.  What do you want, 20 buttons on the pad? Sheesh.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Surprising Support for the DS
« on: May 30, 2004, 11:19:19 AM »

"Draw out/modify plays could be a problem though, due to the cartridge and not enough save data? It would be cool if you touch the screen where you want the QB to throw the ball. And maybe use voice recognition so you can call "hut" and possibly audibles, although it can be embarrassing doing that on the train."

That idea sounds absolutely killer.  I don't even play sports games that often but I would definitely give something like this a try.  However this is something I could see Sega doing moreso than EA.  I just don't see them taking the time to actually implement something like that, especially if they're just doing a PSP port.

" Well I imagine that Nintendo would get info out to some of their more loyal supporters first like Capcom, Sonic Team, Amusement Vision"

One problem here, Sonic Team and Amusement Vision along with the rest of Sega development houses won't be existing separately too much longer so that's already out of the equation.

Dude, I don't think there'd be a single PC out there now that couldn't do Neo Geo.  My old 450 could do Neo Geo even with the later games.  On the other note, I just can't see myself playing a game like Samurai Shodown on a little screen, no matter how good it runs.  Gimme my big screen and speaker setup.

You do realize how much time and work go into those games on average do you?   I'm willing to believe the only reason they aren't any higher is because of the storage medium used.

But the box art would have to attract someone to the game in order for them to want to look at the screen shots to begin with.  You'll be surprised how many people I've seen reject a game because of the cover art alone.  The way we're taught in our major is that the artist has to get the person attracted to their work in 3 seconds or the product would've lost its potential buyer.

As for the cover to this game, I have to side with those who say it sucks.  For the type of game and theme it's supposed to represent it completely understates it and doesn't strike out at you like anything worthwile.

Yeah, on my first go on Zero Mission I had it knocked out in 2:39, which is a far cry from the 5:40 I had the first time through fusion.  However, there's tons of stuff to unlock so I'm quite sure I'll still be busy with it.

The DC had a LOT more going against it than just lack of EA, but yeah even though I don't personally like the games (no matter what they do, they still feel too artificial to me) this ain't the slightest bit good if it's true.

By the way, whatever happened to the Play Action football series?  I think it might be high time to bring all of their sports franchises back.

General Chat / RE: Do people even rent games anymore?
« on: February 03, 2004, 04:13:04 AM »
I really don't rent games anymore either.  My local Blockbusters have just completely went to crap.  I was renting games last year when they bothered to keep a selection up, but as of late they'd put cube games out of plain view and whenever I have gone there they wouldn't really put anything new in there.  As a matter of fact, this weekend I went to rent Beyond Good and Evil and Prince of Persia from them, only to find out they don't have them at all.  Both locations didn't have them, and both cut the selection tenfold.  Back during NES, SNES and N64 days I used to rent games like crazy, but now it's like they don't want to keep a game around unless it's for PS2.  Even X-Box somewhat gets the shaft around here.
