You tell developers these days what to do, they start hating you.  If they start hating you, they start running.  Won't help.

Nanostray trailer

If you haven't seen it yet, I'd highly suggest you do.  All I can say is that as long as the game plays well, they got my dollar vote cuz man those graphics OWN!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Touch screen recalibration?
« on: March 02, 2005, 06:30:42 PM »
As far as store units are concerned, most of the ones I've seen have been abused to the point where calibration doesn't work properly.  I believe it can happen infrequently though, I had the touchscreen react a little bit off of the tip of the stylus, but once I sent it through calibration it was fine.  PDA's have this option as well, every once in a while the screen may get "offsync".

Well supposedly they're not going to be resting on daddy Bill's huge money cushion this time, so if that's true I doubt we'll see a repeat of this gen.

I believe the PSP analog nub is the equivalent to one of those analog nubs that some laptop keyboards have inbetween two keys.

Boy did Sega go on the attack during those days too.  I still remember the commercials they had during that time,  "Gennnesis does... What Nintendo doesn't, Gennnesis does, Gennnesis does, 16 BIT Graphics...  ah those were the days.

Game Boy pocket?  Cuz otherwise I remember it being 4 shades of luscious green.

That's what I thought.  I remember one time playing Spiderman/X-Men on SNES (Superman 64 level crap)  and someone came up while I was on it and said something around the lines of "They made Marvel look toddler, that's why I can't stand Nintendo."  Keep in mind that there was also a Game Boy version, a Game Gear version, and a *gulp* GENESIS version, which aside from even weaker color, looked virtually identical.   It's funny though, I've seen some defend the lacking color palette of the Genesis saying things like, it gave the games a grittier more mature look.

"I've noticed that pre-rendered graphics look great on the SNES but look like ass on the GBA. I imagine it has to do with brightness required for GBA games. Pre-rendered sprites look best with more shadows."

The resolution plays a significant part of that too.  Part of the reason DKC on GBA looked worse in some respects have everything to do with the 64 vertical pixel difference between the SNES and the GBA.  Make the sprites too big and you'll have a situation similar to what Mega Man and Bass suffered through to an extent on the GBA, graphics taking up too much screen real estate. (though I will give them credit for some clever cropping)  Technically speaking, there was no reason for DKC to come out inferior looking given the hardware spec is a bit more than that of an SNES, other than the GBA screen.  Now the DS takes the brightness and color issue out of it since it's backlit, so if they were to do something like this on there instead, it SHOULD be every bit as good, if not FAR superior to the SNES.

I actually have to agree with you on MvDK's style.  What that game needed was a solidly drawn true 2D cel aninated look to it instead of the 3D rendering they did.  Yeah, it looked slick but it had no life to it.  It kinda felt like, "here's your graphics" instead of "here's your world."

I can give you another reason to like sprites over polys in a 2D world.  Sprite collision detection is just boxes, 3D models need collision spheres which can be a lot more iffy at times.

Flashback was on SNES too.

I would actually love to see a whole game done like this just to see how it all comes together.  Too bad average day gamers would be like, WHERE'S THE c0l0Rz 0010111!  THIS GAME'S GRAPHICS ARE PS1 LEVEL, even if it managed to next-gen effects.

The screen ratio was different, therefore the graphics were edited somewhat to reflect that.  Color was for a similar reason, they couldn't bring the full color graphics of a few of the areas over because of the GBA inability to display it correctly. (it'd be too dark)

"i told the moron that Nintendo isn't announcing any more plans until E3 (like every other company), but you know how those EB employees are: idiots. it's dumbasses like this guy that screwed the GameCube and every Nintendo system from here on out. he didnt bother mentioning the 4 hour battery life for his wonderful PSP."

According to two friends of mine who used to work for EB, its not so much that they're idiots (some are now, don't get me wrong) as much as it is that usually their jobs are on the line almost ALL THE TIME and if they don't get a certain no. of preorders, or a certain amount of hardware sales, they could very well lose their job.  This is why hardly any REAL gamers work at places like that, EB wants people that will sell whatever they want them to,  even if it had the production values of something out of a trash can. (Van Helsing)  Then theres the whole incentive factor in this where companies pay them to advertise something for a specific amount of time.  Add that to the fact that company representatives are always coming by to make sure their products get pimped accordingly.

Now I'm not 100% sure if Gamestop does this too, but I'm led to believe they have a similar policy.  However as of late I seem to run into less morons at Gamestop so who knows.

There's no regular charge beam shot.
Collecting 2 Missiles or 2 Electro Lobs (E. Lob is multiplayer only) allows you to charge said weapon.
If you're playing Control S, jumping is done by double tapping the screen.
Switching weapons is done by tapping either of the icons on the bottom right portion of the screen.
Morph ball is performed by tapping the graphic on the lower left hand corner of the screen.
Playing multiplayer is EXTREME ownage and you WILL like it.

No it didn't.  Yeah, the sprites were rendered in 3D first, but they didn't exibit any of 3D's little quirks.  That and the environments still looked very much like 2D graphics.

Anybody using DL/DR or TL/TR are pretty much free kills for anyone in multiplayer.  I'll even tell people to play with Control S, but they always say something like "it's not like an analog stick, i can't play it." so instead they usually end up selecting Control DL/DR and wonder why the score's like 20, 0, 8, and 10 with them getting 0.

Despite sound and graphics, the Genesis SF2SCE was superior to the SNES SF2T.  The Genesis game was made from the ground up and it shows in a much more accurate to arcade engine, whereas the SNES game was still off in a lot of the same ways SF2WW was.  However, this did get fixed when Super SF2 came out.  No contest, the SNES version was better.  Interesting little thing I remember from that time was that both versions of SSF2 were given 4s and 5s in EGM.

SNES if I'm not mistaken did get destroyed in Europe, but prevailed everywhere else with the huge winner for them being Japan.  I do recall the SNES having a bad period after the Mortal Kombat 1 fiasco where if I recall correctly Nintendo started losing a pretty decent chunk of sales to the Genesis.  I remember it getting bad to the point where I was going to go buy a Genesis because it seemed like everything good was going over there and that SNES ports were getting the shaft.   I remember Wolfchild being far more playable on the Genesis than the SNES.  Genesis had better level layouts, AI and autofire while the SNES version looked like it banked on graphics to sell itself since all of the meat of the game got sliced off for the competitor.  However, once the SNES got Super Mario All Stars as well as a few key third party titles like a certain Mortal Kombat 2 with BLOOD, Genesis days were just about numbered.  I believe the 3DO was out by this time and while Nintendo kept pushing the tech they already had (DKC, Stunt Race FX) Sega planted the seeds for the beginning of their demise with the 32X.

I doubt Microsoft will be going anywhere unless they leave on their own free will, which I don't see happening.  Microsoft has a lot of money to throw around for stuff like this, the system would have to bomb REAL hard not to have an X-Box 3.  Now if what I hear about Microsoft not giving X-Box 2/Next/Xenon no where close to as much monetary support is true, that may change some things.
