TalkBack / RE:Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Announced For Europe
« on: October 18, 2007, 10:21:17 AM »
For anyone wondering the port itself isn't screwed up in anyway, it's exactly the way it's supposed to be so if you're a GG fan wanting the latest version by all means the Wii version is completely good.  Runs in 480p 4:3 and the classic controller is great for it.

Nobody's gonna even think of buying this on PC so I really don't know what they're thinking there.

General Gaming / EA STRIKES BACK!!!
« on: October 11, 2007, 12:47:35 PM »
In tonight's news, Electronic Arts just sealed the deal which is sure to have a "Mass Effect" on the industry.  Purchasing the company that owns and operates Pandemic and Bioware for 775 million.  What does the future hold for these two studios?  Will they thrive under new rule?  Will they become the next Westwood studios?  Will we see Mass Effect 2008, 09, and 2010 on all consoles or will the series even exist in the same form after this release?  Stay tuned...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS demo channel?

The NES games would be the only things that would get emulated on the DS without a hitch, everything else would probably take too big of a hit to do.

So, who's buying this assuming 90% of the game turns out good enough. (with the exception of Kairon, he's a given...)  *raises hand*

Hey, they couldn't ignore the rising userbase vs. ever rising production costs forever.  NO company can.  NONE.  I bet you the shareholders would be sending them death threats if they didn't make this move.  Either way, IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!

Well well well, I know a certain friend of mine that's gonna be mega PO'ed about this news, but hey business is business right?  On the other hand, DAMN this is HOT news!  I mean HOT!!

Yeah, it's the principle of the idea because the way I see it I just threw down about $1,000 plus just to get the system, games, surround system and the HDTV to support it.  I don't want to hear about any "cuts" made to any games' graphics or anything on a next-gen console.  At this point  it's a BS excuse with all the technology they have under the hood, and you better believe I'm not the only one that's looking at it all this way.

As far as Wii looking dated in a few years, why does this issue keep cropping up with people.  It's a $150 console barring the controller and Wii Sports.  Anybody disappointed with the Wii's graphics and tech in comparison to consoles that costs $500 plus to build at launch is a damned moron that DESERVES to be disappointed.  For most people the GC appeared dated compared to the X-Box and even the PS2 at times because outside of one or two companies nobody ever bothered to actually get anything real out of the system, and even then the GC could probably go farther than it's best titles.  Hell if anything,  a lot of the Wii's first year problems with third parties probably has a lot to do with the fact that they:

1. Either don't care enough.
2. Never really learned the GC hardware to begin with,  (remember talks of some developers "discovering" later in it's lifespan that the GC had an additional 16MB of RAM on top of the main 24MB) or
3. Both 1. and 2. which is probably the situation for some  of the devs on Wii now.

My concern isn't with the Wii's so-called lack of tech, I understand what it can and can't do and can completely accept that given the price tag.  It's with the average developers lack of giving a crap that gets my blood boiling.  When Rogue Leader and RE4 look heaps better than a good 80% of the third party lineup on a stronger console with practically the same architecture you know something ain't right.  I mean damn, even Wii Sports of all things did a few bump maps.  WII SPORTS!!!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Prediction: MGS: TS port for Wii
« on: October 02, 2007, 07:47:08 AM »
What's the logic in that though?  They didn't do this with the PSP, no no, it got new games even if they were different from the main series style.  Why the hell should folks like me who bought the system settle with TS.  That game would sell just as well on the Wii as it did the GC, not at all.  Why, because Konami will not back the game again just like they did the last time.  If they're gonna port an old game, why not 2 and 3?  That would make more sense, oh there's that word again, "sense"...

None of these games are that big in size, I'd say they might be about the size of Mario 64.

Alright, now does anybody need anymore proof that if a company wants X game to go to whatever system, they'll find a way to do it even if it sounds impossible? There's a lot of people who say that the game industry is a joke and I can see exactly why.

162
For the most part I agree with the assesment, but DAMN don't put this year's DDR into the half baked section.  Konami did more for this mix than they've done for DDR in YEARS and the fact that we ended up getting it instead of PS2 is a huge boon to the console.  Yeah, they got DDR Supernova 2 and I know some of you guys are looking at it all as Hottest Party being the spinoff.   Truth be told, I bet it's the other way around.  Which one got showed off at TGS?  Which one was announced first?  Which one were they pimping hard?  Nobody knew about Supernova 2 until maybe 2 months before it's release and they kept unusually quiet about it while they couldn't shut up about Hottest Party.  I'm not saying Konami as a whole is thinking up great stuff for the Wii, but give the Bemani group credit.  They at least seem to know what's up.

More impressions:
I don't know if I mentioned this earlier, but there are NO speed modifiers in this game at all.
Hands and gimmicks can be turned off in ALL modes, not just Free.
One unfortunate thing about the Konami originals in this game is that about 5 or 6 of them sound eerily similar to each other.  It's not too much of a deal killer, but it sort of reaks of Naoki being Naoki in terms of his music.  (edit, just viewed the credits and yeah my suspicions were confirmed. I've venture to say 85% of them are Naoki Maeda songs)
If you're a huge fan of the original versions of Candy, Breakdown, and Love Shine, you're either gonna hate the English remixes or love them.  Me, I like em.  It's something different.
You don't have to full combo a song for a AA, however maybe it's just me but the requirements feel like they even more strict than DDR Supernova.  This coupled with the default 1x scroll rate and getting an AA feels like an uphill battle on some songs.
Unless you can get a good dance pad from somewhere, or you go through Groove Circuit Mode on nothing but Beginner and Light for as long as you can, you are gonna find yourself doing what we call CCR, (controller controller revolution)  With me playing on Heavy, I wouldn't DARE play the crowd challenges on foot with some of the songs that do come up.
I seem to do a little better with the system set at 4:3 aspect ratio, since for some reason in 16:9 the gray receptor arrows look a little funky (I got a feeling it has something to do with every other DDR on PS2 was 4:3).  That's just me being me though, probably won't bother the majority of people.

Overall my opinion is this, if you're coming off of Mario Mix and is looking for a new challenge by all means buy it.  If you bypassed Mario Mix and are thinking about buying your first DDR, get it.  It has a bit more of a difficulty curve if you're new to the series as opposed to Mario Mix, but you won't find yourself having to learn new gameplay methods if you start playing at the arcade.

However, If you MUST have your bemani crossovers and hate the idea of playing to a songlist that half American covers (even though they're really high quality and have good to outstanding charts), get Supernova 2. If you need your speed mods and Oni courses get Supernova 2.  If you want really hard boss songs, get both.  If you don't know what I'm talking about here, completely disregard this paragraph and buy it.

I love this mix, it ain't perfect but the things it gets right it gets incredibly right.  It gets my overall seal of approval.

note: if you do get it, depending on your TV you may or may not have to adjust the timing window.  default is 0, I had to set mine on +8 to feel right.

« on: September 26, 2007, 07:51:22 AM »
Alright, got the game at home and have played it for about an hour and a half.  Let's break it down...

For the purists, in Free Mode you can turn off hands and gimmicks so that it's regular DDR.
The covers sound practically dead on to the originals with the exception of maybe 3 songs which were sorta remixed a bit.  Honestly so far I feel like this is the best songlist DDR has had since the 4th mix/ 5th mix era.  99 Red Ballons is the English version, not the German.
Freeze arrows are in, and the judgement window is back to typical home DDR instead of the massive window that Mario Mix had.  There are also Wii-Remote/Nunchuck freezes as well.
WIDESCREEN SUPPORT AND PROGRESSIVE SCAN!  THANK YOU KONAMI FOR NOT SCREWING THAT UP!!!
I had reservations about the dancers beforehand, and I know some of ya'll probably still won't like them, but they actually have a DANCE ROUTINE WITH EVERY SONG and looks better than the flailing arms and random pauses crap in Supernova.
This game has REAL 10 foot songs and holy DAMN did it initially catch me off guard cuz I didn't think they'd do it.
The Groove challenge mode is setup a bit like the way Guitar Hero with different venues that require you to pass songs under different conditions.  There's even boss stages here as well, the stages use songs that you unlock once you've beaten it.  Whether there will be pity unlocks or not, is still unknown.  (update: no pity unlocks at all, and the last song challenge is killer to have to unlock if you're not anywhere close to a veteran of the series)
50 songs total, all new.  Sound quality on the recordings is super high.  If you have a surround sound system, it is simply bliss. (especially if you're like me and came off of Stepmania)
Framerate from what I seen so far stays completely stable and doesn't fluctuate like the Ultramixes/Universe.
Will be back with more info in a little bit.  So far IMO, this game destroys Mario Mix by a long shot.  This is REAL DDR without a damn doubt.  It took years for this day to happen but it was entirely worth the wait.

TalkBack / RE:New Wii and DS Games from SNK
« on: September 22, 2007, 05:29:31 AM »
Part of what made Samurai Shodown's presentation work was the music, especially 3-4 where the music was pretty damn atmospheric and IMO was some of the best sound design I've seen a fighting game ever get, and this is coming from a 7 sound channel Neo Geo.  This goes double if you had the speakers for it.

As far as it's gameplay was concerned, true they weren't the most shining examples of fighting games, but they never were Mortal Kombat bad either.  They were still fun in their own way.

Now this will be an even better deal than getting them on the VC if they're ports that use the home versions arranged soundtracks.  This is big news to me, I'm getting both.

If my history with online fighters ring true for this, I still feel like a lot of people around here aren't gonna like it once they figure out just how limited the range for a good matchup is going to be.  All I'm gonna say is that if you expect to be able to play a wide variety of people all over you might as well turn around and forget about it.

Who the heck didn't see the lag coming and speed drops coming?  This is how you deal with fighting games online.  It's either drop the speed or have to deal with button input delays which probably for Sakurai and a lot of others would kill this game.

As far as FC go, at this point if you're still aching over it you've got two other alternatives.  Either use them or pipe down.  Nobody ever said this was gonna be X-Box Live on the Wii to begin with and you know damn well a company like Nintendo ain't footing the bill for something like it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Whatever happened to online?
« on: September 17, 2007, 05:18:32 PM »
Fighting games by their very nature are virtually unplayable without having to alter the way you play radically to adjust to lag.  Even if it is online, I highly doubt too many people are gonna actually find it good.

Keep in mind the game is supposed to handle 32 players at once as well as keep 60fps.  It's no surprise some stuff was probably cut back to get it.

TalkBack / RE:NEOGEO Titles Announced for US Release

The largest Neo Geo games were 88MB and those were the "Giga Power" ones that I doubt they'll release on anything other than a collection since they're the more modern ones.  Everything before that was about the size of OoT.
