Nintendo Gaming / RE:Factor 5 working on a new Wii title

Nintendo core... *chuckle*

I think I'd rather not see another Pilotwings made, I can see nostalgia killing the game dead right out of the gate especially if a third party made it.  They'd be better off releasing the original on the VC, that is if the tech allows for it...  I remember that game being one of the harder SNES titles to emulate.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nitro Bikes - Wii Exclusive
« on: January 18, 2008, 04:02:14 PM »
It's a 4:3 offender.  (it only runs 4:3 aspect)

It's quite blurrier than most Wii titles.

Generic rock music.

Initial learning curve is a bit on the steep side.  They pretty much throw you into the fray without any sort of tutorial at all.

Maybe it's just me, but the tracks seem to be awfully thin on a whole.  This was one thing that NP complained about and right now I have to sort of agree with them.  It wouldn't seem so bad if it was just the later tracks like that for a little added difficulty, but it starts that way and without knowing how all the controls work (the manual
DOES NOT explain how to do 90 degree turns at all, it's in one of the loading screens if you're fortunate enough to catch it).  The thinness issue could also be me going back to point one, it's a 4:3 offender and I haven't had to play a Wii racing title that way in a long while.

You do stunts in mid air to gain more nitro boost.  Boost is handled like Motorstorm, if you overheat you blow.  Blowing up reduces your Nitro.

Controls are pretty much like Excite Truck in terms of steering and air control. Dpad is boost.  Mid air tricks however, are done with combinations of the D-Pad and button 1.

Haven't got the chance to play it online against anyone yet, apparently nobody owns it except me and maybe six others right now and I've yet to see the other six.

Gonna go back and play it a bit more, but my first impressions are eh.  I think the track designs are getting me more than anything else because there's so far they all seem too thin for high speed racing, there's no real shortcuts or multiple paths in the tracks that I've seen so far, and because of how condensed things are, the track itself sometimes gets obscured.  Doesn't help that nobody is playing online either.

I wouldn't play Lair no matter where it went.  Once was enough.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:When you play VC games on your HD TV, do you...
« on: January 18, 2008, 10:53:39 AM »
Not to mention that if you're still running on component cables, the image quality is still a bit less than VGA, even at the native resolution.  And don't even get me started on HDTV lag if you have a LCD.  Most games don't have an issue with it, but stuff like DDR and to a lesser extent Guitar Hero is absolute HELL to sync up to what feels right.  Then there's the whole 6 bit panel crap if you have an LCD.

Now Ian, on CRTs if I'm not mistaken, those pixels are actually off.  At least it seems to be that way since otherwise they would've burned in long time ago.  With CRTs, if the resolution is supported, they actually beam the resolutions onto the screen straight on since pixels on a CRT aren't like those of LCD where every pixel on the panel IS a pixel it uses.  On an LCD, anything lower than it's native either does one of two things, shrink the image to match the resolution pixel for pixel, or attempt to fill the screen through interpolation and guessing just how it should display the pixels on screen.

I always switch to 4:3 on VC games and any game that doesn't support 16:9.  They look too screwed up, especially NES and SNES games, otherwise.

Good to see Karaoke Revolution on that list, didn't know that was happening.  Maybe that'll fix the deep wound Boogie created last year in that front.
Wii Fit Q2, no surprise there, same for Mario Kart in the spring.
KOF in May is better than no KOF at all.  Now how about supporting progressive scan SNK.
Heres hoping that 2K games actually thinks out MLB 2K8 on the Wii.  Could be real good if they do.

Not bad, I'd say by the time I'll be interested in buying something again at least 2 or 3 of these games will be out by then.  I can work with that.

TalkBack / RE:REVIEWS: Need for Speed ProStreet
« on: January 11, 2008, 05:04:07 AM »
This game has a damage model?  Are we even playing the same game??  I've damaged the cars more than enough and other than the Carbon scratches there's no damage model on here at all.  They could of at least half attempted Burnout last gen damage on the cars but they didn't even do that.

IMO, the game is a huge mixed bag.  I can see where they're trying to go with it.  I think the biggest problem with the game is that it's competition is hellishly steep, and this goes triple on 360 with Forza around.  There's really not much of a reason for the game to exist when others have been doing it far better than them for a long time now.  The unfortunate thing is that I can see the ProStreet type of game continuing on if for no other reason than to further separate it from the Burnout series, especially with Paradise's open ended game environment.  As far as the Wii game is concerned, yeah there was stuff cut out of Carbon too, but it wasn't quite as bad as some of the things done here.

I'll start with the good first, the controls are on a whole better and more responsive than Carbon.  Granted, on Carbon I played with control scheme 1 (Excite Truck method) the whole way through Darius included so aside from a couple of button changes which were mostly for the better I had no problem with it.  One thing that I should get out of the way is that every version of the game save for the DS has the three driving assist options. (though EA clearly made a bigger deal out of this in their trailers for the Wii game)  Drag races control fine, though I'm not a fan of having to deal with the vehicle slightly turning if I'm holding the remote at a slight angle.  That angle can kill precious milloseconds and that's something I'm not trying to think about in a situation like that.  It's the only event so far that I turn on Casual driving assists for, that kills the steering.  Haven't tried the speed races yet so I still can't say anything in particular about them.  Graphics are decent, now if only it wasn't so bland looking at times.  Most folks complain about them, but from what I've experienced it ain't half as bad as the PS2 version.  That one is just a mess, this one at least looks fairly clean and runs decently enough.  It's better than Carbon was.

Now on the other hand, like I mentioned before what the heck happened to the damage model?  Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting it to work like the PC/PS3/360 version but at the same time even Excite Truck's damage would've been better than the Carbon scratches.  And where the heck is the online?  They had an excuse last year, but this time it just doesn't add up.  I mean hell, the DS game is online!  It might not be the race day setup that's on the other consoles, but it's better than nothing at all.   Some of the default cars on the 360/PS3/PC version aren't here either, no doubt to keep it as an incentive to buy one of those versions instead.  The animations for the race day menus are replaced by static images that just change around every 15 to 20 seconds.  I know they couldn't have done it entirely, but sheesh I would've took an FMV of the scene in the BG in place of the images.

IMO, if this is the ultimate direction they plan on going for ports of games like this on the Wii, either just don't bother porting them or get another group in-house whose focus is the Wii platform and have them do something that'll actually be more in tune with what the system can do.  These downsized ports are getting old now.

108
Won't matter one bit if they don't fix the series biggest issue, at any decent level of play it became incredibly obvious that Soul Calibur was hacked together gameplay, that goes triple for SC3.  And without an arcade release first, I doubt the game is even being considered for somewhat serious play.  Now with the addition of these two, it just became increasingly obvious just who they're trying to get to buy this game.

KOF 95-97 will more than likely not be on the VC.  Those games are supposed to be part of the "Orochi Saga" compilation that they plan on releasing sooner or later for the Wii and PS2.   Nonetheless, great news.  It'll give my arcade stick a workout.

Now that I think about it, I'm actually kinda surprised Midway didn't bring this one over, considering that Cruis'n was made by the same group.  Midway must think they can't strike lightning twice on the Wii or something.

TalkBack / RE:Konami Announces Target: Terror
« on: January 03, 2008, 08:44:31 AM »
Once again, one company sees another doing something and the rest start following suit.  In this case it seems to be for the worse.
What makes this so bad is that Target Terror wasn't even a good arcade game.  The crap sits in the corner of our arcade doing absolutely NOTHING but show its attract mode all day.
What also kills me is that the graphics haven't been touched in the slightest.  The Wii could run circles around this crap, it's that old.

Edit:  Apparently I haven't been paying attention to that section of the arcade too much, I was only aware of the original, not Gold.  According to my brother who works there, that machine does make a killing in revenue on average.  The original Target Terror didn't do all that much here, but Target Terror Gold is a big moneymaker.  Maybe we might have something here, if the game is liked as much in the arcades as it seems to be around here it may not do all that bad when it gets home.  I can still picture Konami ROFL about doing this knowing it's going to fund their next hi-def project.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New (?) Tales of Symphonia: Knight of Ratatosk Trailer
« on: December 29, 2007, 05:33:54 AM »
What happened to the cel-shaded painted look of the first game?  I hope the game isn't that far along, because if it is this looks quite disappointing compared to the original.

The Atari and NES eras defined me with the 2600 being my very first console, followed by the short lived 7800 and then the NES.  We skipped over the 5200 even though I had a cousin that had one so that's where I played that.  I vividly remember how game prices were $7 and below due to the crash.  I remember having the choice of either Jr. PacMan or Mario Bros. and choosing the former, which to this day I actually regret(I had PacMan and Ms.PacMan so I thought it was a no brainer).  I'll still play Atari games every now and then, especially the Activision bunch from back when they actually came up with great stuff. (H.E.R.O. is one of my favorite games along with several others)

115
It might not have been as hard as the Saturn, but it was still an uphill technical battle compared to the Playstation even if you took the cartridge space out of the equation.  That and there was also the high licensing fees that Sony corrected to a point as well which was probably the biggest reason for the mass exodus.  Sega wouldn't have been a good place to go for that either, in fact when Sony was third party to both companies it was one of the big things that they studied up hard on before releasing their system.

Funny thing is, the cartridge prices were actually part of the reason I ultimately abandoned the N64 for the PS1, which I then abandoned for the PC for quite a while.  To be honest with you IMO the 32/64 bit era was a load of crock that I never want to see repeated again.  Last gen wasn't that much better either.

116
The thing is, Sega still isn't very good at business and that's the main thing that killed them in the first place.  Sega would have to become an entirely new company in order to come back and with their track record, that's just not happening.  Nintendo isn't going anywhere because even when they were supposedly down, they still made money off the software and the hardware.  May not have been as much as it is now, but that's not even the point.  They could arguably survive at least 2 Xbox type systems in losses before things start looking bad financially.  However, as conservative as they are with money, they're not going anywhere anytime soon.

117
The reason Nintendo never got to Europe like they intended to with the NES had a lot to do with the lawsuits from Atari that they were too busy trying to fight off.  Interesting thing is that before the NES got to America Nintendo was originally considering Atari to be the distributor, but of course Atari was too busy destroying themselves and taking the market along with it.

118
The SNES/Genesis deal isn't true if you count the Sega CD and 32X, which very much did play a big role in that generation.  One could say that a lot of the reason for the Genesis sliding down had everything to do with them trying to outdo the SNES in HARDWARE, even when it wasn't practical.  Sega theoretically could've just kept the Genesis the way it was and it would've been far better off in the long run.  It's not like they couldn't pull some slick looking effects off, hell most of that systems lineup did everything in it's power to make the SNES look like it wasn't that hot (look at everything games like Gunstar Heroes did and tell me they weren't trying to prove a point) and truth be told the Genesis was THE place for sports games, with titles like Madden and the NFL 9x series.

No, the Master System had the benefit of being developed a couple years after the NES, it was technologically superior to the NES. And it got less than 10% of the market.

That's not how it happened in Europe...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Take Two laughs at GTA on Wii
« on: December 19, 2007, 05:02:23 PM »
Sixth Angel got it right.  The ONLY reason they're saying this right now is because of the huge investment that they put into GTA4 and you better believe it's huge.  Once GTA4 has been out for a bit we'll see where things stand.  I am thinking about getting Bully though, I was kinda curious about it when they put it on PS2 a while back but never got a real chance to take a look at it.  By the time it comes out I'll probably be set for a new title.

Take-Two reported that their Wii surprise hit, Carnival Games, has shipped more than 500,000 units

And it'll probably sell through that too.  However, expect the DS game to completely flop and watch them act dumbfounded about it as if they don't know what went wrong.  It ain't gonna be anywhere close to the same game without the motion controls and they know it.  As for the GTA comment, that's not what Godfather was telling me.  They don't want to potentially take anything away from GTA4 so of course they're gonna say that.  There's a lot riding of that title for them.

edit: My comments actually go double for DS Carnival Games having actually played the Wii title for a solid hour and a half.   A lot of the fun with the game comes from actually having the feel of the games themselves in most cases spot on to the way it would be in real life.  There's no way I can imagine the game where you dunk the guy in water being anywhere near as fun as it is now using touch screen strokes.  It's like Wii bowling vs. Clubhouse Games bowling, they don't compare and neither will this.  Like I said, expect it to sell low numbers and see them acting like they don't know what hit them.

Well I highly doubt people would get a refund and many people did not notice it until someone found out and the internet went on fire with this news item.

Me and several others on numerous message boards have noticed something odd with the game on day 1.  Me, personally when I realized that I HAD to turn my speaker volume way up in order to hear it and even then compared to DDR Hottest Party something was insanely wrong with it.  The only reason I didn't scream mono sound on day 1 was because to an extent with some sound effects it still worked and also the last time I played anything in mono was 1997.  Serves Activision right to have a class action suit brought upon them, what they've actively done believe it or not was an act of false advertising.  That and the fact the PS2 version's sound had no problems screams to me that they prioritized every other version of the game over the Wii product.

122
What do people say about Nintendo being market leader again?  Some people have gotten very hostile about it.  I know a friend of mine who's still entirely dumbfounded about the idea of Monster Hunter 3 on the Wii.  "Okami I can see, but Monster Hunter?  That's a load of crap!  Why on a kids system?! (this is despite the numerous adults 30 and up that I've seen on numerous occasions come in there to ask for a Wii themselves)" "It won't handle the game well at all" (despite the 7 year old PS2 seemed to have no problem with it)  Tell them development costs and all of a sudden they don't want to hear or believe it's the case. This friend is one of many of the Gamestop and EB workers that think and act just like this.

It's not just the game stores either, their lords, the gaming press as of late has been really interesting to observe.  On what I believe is the latest EGM I remember seeing an article title on the front cover saying something around the lines of Wii Crap.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to actually read the article, but knowing how EGM/1up have been about the Wii lately I already have a hunch as to where it's going.  Game Informer seems to have uped the ante when it comes to anti-establishment games and have managed to become more and more annoying.  Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games was shredded to bits, but one section of the review infuriated me to no end.  I can't remember exactly what it said but the way it put it sounded something like "Graphics:  Primary Colors, HAR HAR HAR! 3."  It made me do a double take and had me asking "What the f*ck is their problem?!"  And truth be told, this ain't the only title they've done like this either.  Paper Mario was trashed because it was supposedly a childs game too, but in both cases I think there was something far more troubling going on.  I remember putting the magazines away long time ago because their definition of a great game and mine were so different to the point where the magazines became irrelevant.  The thing is, the majority of people reading those magazines were the type of gamers that the industry was primarily catering to so to them losing folks like me was probably no big deal since they still in a sense held the ace card.  The thing is, for something like the Wii to take off the way it has means that their very definition of what a game is is being crushed by this new influx of a wide variety of new players.  Carnival Games gets destroyed in the mags and yet it's probably killing them inside to see it sell 300,000 copies and is probably looking to inch on into the 400,000 mark. (I'm not saying the game is 10 out of 10 material or anything, but at the same time something about it must be decent enough for it to make those numbers.  Ditto goes for Mario and Sonic)  It looks to me as if a lot of these guys fear their livelihoods going down the toilet especially with them knowing that Nintendo PURPOSELY sidestepped them to sell the console.  What's happening is that these guys are gradually becoming irrelevant.  Let the Wii gain even more steam, don't be surprised if within the next couple of years either some of these publications will close down or they will change with the coming times.

They've been doing this as early as launch PS2.  If you've ever seen Orphan, you'd know this first hand.

Um, Ian, the NES was a blue ocean console.  So was the Gameboy.  Just because there was no term for it back then didn't mean that the business strategy itself didn't exist.  Blue Ocean has nothing to do with just appealing to casuals, it's about growing the market which is exactly what they both did.  Funny thing is, anyone old enough would know that things really haven't changed all that much. The same way they're talking about how 360 and PS3 are so much better than the Wii is the exact same way these same analyst and "hardcore" gamers back then used to blast the NES.  Back then hardcore gamers were on the PC.  I used to hear it from several kids I used to know back in grade school who had PCs that constantly told me to sell the NES so I could get some "real" games.
