Nintendo Gaming / RE:Transformers - Wii
« on: July 26, 2007, 08:10:41 AM »
I traded it in before I beat it, but some of the missions are like beating your head against a brick wall, repeatedly.

Where are you stuck at? I still might be able to help based on my experience with the 360 version.

I had it for the 360. It was OK, not great and definitely not worth the $60 it retails for ($30 Wii, $40 360/PS3 would be much more appropriate). I traded it in about a week later before it had a chance to depreciate in value any further ($25 is all GameStop/EB Games was giving for it about 2 weeks ago).

Can someone explain this to me. A system is bombing, you take away it's new features and change the name, now its a success? That seems to me like a complete disaster.

The gamble that Nintendo took with the DS was the touch screen. Nobody knew how the general public would react. Nintendo protected themselves by keeping the DS and GameBoy separate entities. This is where the whole "third pillar" strategy came into play. If the DS proved to be unsuccessful, they could have phased it out and the GameBoy line would have come out unscathed by the DS experiment. From that failure, Nintendo could have revised the DS hardware to get rid of the touch screen for the next incarnation of the "GameBoy". It would have been successful because of the GB name. Instead, the DS served as a proof of concept for the Wii and showed the world that people want to experience a new way to play their games.

There is only a drought because Manhunt 2 wasn't released on Monday as originally scheduled.

SSBB was never scheduled for August. November was always the rumored release month. It's coming Dec. 3rd.

All of the press conferences were pretty much uneventful.

I watched G4's coverage of Microsoft's conference last night. Rock Band looks cool. RE5 is shaping up nicely. Interesting note regarding all of the released screens and videos of GTA4 being from the 360 build of the game. Other than that though, nothing really else noteworthy. Mass Effect looks great, PGR4 looks like it needs alot of work. During the live demo it looked like there were a lot of frame rate issues resulting in stutter.

IMHO though, Nintendo had the best showing. They dated their most highly anticipated titles. Mario kart is no longer a rumor and it's coming sooner than expected. The Wii Zapper was unveiled in it's final form, etc.

After reading through the notes of Sony's conference - it sounds like they had the 2nd best showing right behind Nintendo.

Wow. Just wow. On the bright side, a huge statement is being made just by the fact that offer a control scheme for the Wii. Not only that, but it's the first option which is kind of cool.

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having 4 different control set ups?

Yes, but this is Nintendo we're talking about. For every step forward they shoot themselves in the foot and take 2 steps back.

Speaking of WiiWare. I downloaded the XBox Live Arcade version of Missile Command yesterday. While playing it, I couldn't help but to think that it would be a perfect candidate for WiiWare. Using the Wii-Mote to move the crosshairs around the screen could really bring back the trackball precision of the original arcade machine. Use the "B" trigger for the middle gun turret and map the left/right turrets to the D-Pad (or "down" on the D-Pad for the middle gun).

This game is about as appealing as it's title. It looks like it would get very boring and monotonous after 5 minutes.

164
I still use the original launch DS. I charge it once every 3 to 5 weeks (depending on much it gets used) and over the course of that time, I'd say it averages 8 to 10 hours of play before the power light turns red.

165
With WiiConnect24 on, my Wii is always warm to the touch, even when the console is off (it would be cool, if the WC24 were off, too). When my Wii is running, it only gets very warm, but never hot enough to cause concern. Adrock - how do you have your Wii positioned? Is getting enough ventilation?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nyko Classic Controller Grip
« on: June 23, 2007, 07:38:22 AM »
I went to a GameStop earlier today and they had it (last one in stock). I picked it up and I love it.

I was concerned that the Wii-Mote might get in the way, mounted underneath the "Classic Controller Grip", but it really not an issue. Having the Wii-Mote sitting off to the side, tethered to the Classic Controller has always irked me. Nyko's product takes care of two issues. First, it makes the Classic Controller much more comfortable to hold. I never found the Classic Controller to be very ergonomic. Sure it gets the job done, but I've always dreaded seeing the "Classic Controller is required to play this game" message. Yes, I know I could have just used a WaveBird - but...

Anyways, the second issue taken care is the most obvious - the Wii-Mote. The clip (which can be used with or without the "grip") attaches to the back of the Classic Controller. The cord wraps around the clip and just enough room is provided to allow for there to be enough slack so it's not pulled too tightly on either, while leaving about 2.5 inches at the end to connect to the Wii-Mote. The clip acts as a holster for the Wii-Mote which simply slides-in (via the grooves on the sides of the Wii-Mote) for a surprisingly natural fit.

The Wii-Mote can be removed easily whenever needed, leaving the Classic Controller inside the grip, with the wrapped-cord in place for future use. Definitely worth the $15, at least it is to me.

Also - I don't know why, but in the pictures of this product (Nyko's website, GameStop, etc.) - they have the cord wrapped around the clip wrong. It's actually a much better and tidier fit than what is depicted in the promotional pictures. You would think that Nyko would know how to use their own product (being as though the correct way to set it up is illustrated on the back of the package).

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Manhunt 2 from Rockstar? Whoa...
« on: June 20, 2007, 04:28:20 PM »
An interesting note - I was just visiting Nintendo's website to view the Manhunt 2 listing. It shows up on their Master Game List as "Rating Pending" however, if you open up the advanced search option - You can filter games by their ESRB rating. "Adults Only" is one of the choices.

No. I was planning to buy it regardless. Today's pre-order was simply due to the "AO" situation possibly hindering it's availability, though now that's a moot point since Nintendo doesn't appear to have any balls.

I went to GameStop a little while ago (to trade some stuff in and pick-up RE4) and I inquired whether or not they would be selling Manhunt 2 now that it appears the game will carry the "AO" rating. The manager told me it is against the company's policy to sell "AO" rated games, and if that rating sticks, you will not find it at any GameStop/EB Games store. He then continued that since it is still listed as "RP" in their system, I could pre-order the game because they will honor and fill all pre-orders regardless of the final rating. I paid for it, in full - and put a $5 deposit down for a friend.

How, exactly, would that be funny? I think it would be sickening to see a company give in to politics and "religious right" wack jobs just because they disapprove of the game's content. Rockstar/Take Two had better not back down and neuter this or any of their other games just because people want to bitch. I make my own decisions on what games I want to play. I don't need nor want anyone to hold my hand.

Nintendo Gaming / Nyko Classic Controller Grip
« on: June 18, 2007, 08:03:15 AM »
Has anyone seen the Nyko Classic Controller Grip? It looks interesting. My only concern would be that the Wii-Mote might get in the way mounted on the underside. I wonder if that's why Nintendo hasn't released a clip for the Wii-Mote to attach to the classic controller?

Has anyone picked this thing up yet?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii Life Span
« on: June 18, 2007, 07:59:14 AM »
I tried searching, but couldn't find it. About a year we had a similar discussion and I said that believe the Wii is a transitional console. I still believe that. Nintendo needed a proof of concept so they incorporated their new ideas into existing technology. It was the easiest way to test their new ideas without having to spend too much on manufacturing costs. Now that it's proven to be successful, they can take the Wii to the next level...

I expect the Wii's successor to arrive no later than 4th Quarter 2010. It's power will at least equal that of the XBox 360 and/or the PS3.

I'll be trading in my GameCube version (but I'll keep the limited edition GameStop tin, history of RE book and RE4 lithograph). I'll also give up the 3 backwards-compatible XBox games I held onto when I bought my 360. I don't play them, so I might as well get the $2 GameStop will offer me for them. LOL

Why buy it again if you didn't like it originally? Are you hoping the Wii control scheme will change your opinion of the game?

Pretty much, yeah.  I won't be buying it on launch or anything though.. just on my list of possibilities if I ever run out of stuff to play.

I can respect that.
