Throughout this current generation of consoles and even in the previous one, we often hear the same thing:

Sony is in first place because their machine came out first, before their competition. Due to this headstart, they were able to have a nice-sized library of available titles by the time Nintendo and Microsoft launched their new consoles. Ultimately, it was this headstart and the selection of games already available that helped Sony beat Nintendo and Microsoft and remain in the #1 position.

If we were to listen to (and believe) all of the current rumors regarding the next generation of consoles, Nintendo's successor to the GameCube might see a Fall 2004 launch in Japan following a stateside release in early to mid-2005. If Nintendo does in fact have a new machine ready for release this early, they will most likely launch before Sony and Microsoft. I have read some reports that indicate Sony's PlayStation3 won't be ready until 2006. Microsoft has yet to even announce a successor to the X-Box, even though it's widely speculated that there will be one (we all know it's coming).

If Nintendo does in fact launch in 2005 before Sony and Microsoft, will this be the beginning of the Big N's return to glory? It's quite obvious that they are learning their lesson from the past 2 generations and now see the importance of delivering a new machine first. Will following the example set by Sony, and more or less fighting them with a taste of their own medicine lead Nintendo to victory?

Although an earlier launch could mean a less powerful machine (less powerful than PS3/X-Box2) similar to how the PS2 is inferior to the GameCube and X-Box, they could use the early launch to their advantage. This would allow them to have a wide selection of games already available by the time Sony and Microsoft are ready to launch their new systems. With proper 3rd party support and quality games, Nintendo could finally prove to all of the nay sayers out there that they are still in the game and kicking ass!

I agree. I'm glad that I received this game as a gift and didn't have to pay for it. But hey - my best friend's 6 year old son loves it!

Way to go Nintendo, HAHAHA

Interesting. The last few times I had visited GameStop (2 different stores), they have tried to get me to lay down $5 to pre-order Soul Caliber II by telling me that I will receive a a SC2 lithograph (a clerk at both stores pulled one out of a drawer to show me what it looks like) and a SC2 T-shirt. Maybe the "bonus items" differ by region?

I would rather receive a demo disc and a book instead of a lithograph (typical 8x12 glossy artwork pic) and a T-Shirt.

I have to disagree with those who say that Eternal Darkness looks too much like it's original N64 design. While the character models still have some sharp edges in both the actual game and FMV sequences, if you compare screen shots from the N64 builds to the final GameCube version - the differences are very noticeable. Although the N64 was a great a system (and I would have loved it if ED had been released back then), there is way too much detail in the GameCube version that couldn't have been possible on the N64. I don't mind the fact the characters still look a little "pointy", Silicon Knights' impeccable attention to detail and gameplay is what made me choose Eternal Darkness as the Cube's most polished game. Just look at the design of every background - it is probably the most elaborate to ever be used in any game - every single object is highly detailed.

The game never experiences any sort of frame rate slow-down. The control is solid. The crash detection is just about as perfect as it can get in a game (sure there are some minor flaws, but I have yet to see a game in this or the previous generation that didn't suffer from crash detection problems in one way or another) and the storyline is one of the most entertaining...EVER.

It is a combination of everything I have mentioned that makes ED the most polished game to me.

You have to remember that gameplay and story have to factor into the mix along with the graphics and audio.

With that said, I'm glad that Silicon Knights moved the game from the N64 to the GameCube. I also hope that they delay Too Human so it can be a launch title for the successor of the Cube. I am sure that however amazing the game might be now - it will be even more of experience on the future console.

Nintendo Gaming / Consumerism as experience eg: GCN2 anticipation

Good observation.

I am more intersted in quality games. I couldn't care less what system it's on. It seems that today's games focus more on visuals than game play. It's hard to find a truly stunning game in this generation that also has substance.

Not to say that everyone's anticipation of the GameCube's successor is not warranted - If you think about, the next generation of games will bring new ideas and things that weren't possible to acheive with today's (or yesterday's) machines.

Something tells me that "DVD content" means that you can put the disc into your DVD player (or just the DVD player mode on the PS2 and XBox), and you can watch all the interviews and stuff.

Which gives me the nagging feeling that they'll just crop all of it completely out of the GameCube version, and blame it on the "inferiority" of the GameCube discs.

Or include an extra DVD in the case, and whine about how much it's costing them to do it, while completely ignoring any piracy benefits.

Edit: And/or whine about how easy it is to pirate a standalone DVD potentially included with the GameCube version.

Star Wars: Rogue Leader - Rogue Squadron II featured DVD-like extras that were accessed through the game's menus.

Really?

I would think that since it is also being released for the PS2 and X-Box that they would be arcade ports instead of Nintendo ports. I guess we'll know more in a few months.

While it's true that most of the GBA games are designed for the 2.9" screen of the GBA, most of them look surprisingly clear on a TV screen. Easily SNES quality graphics. You have to remember that the GameBoy Player uses the GameCube to process the video images. It is not just magnifying the GameBoy video.

I would imagine that they are all ports of the arcade originals.

I couldn't care less about GCN/GBA connectivity - but a monthly, bi-monthly or even a quarterly demo disc would be incentive enough for me to purchase a subsription to Nintendo Power.

Nintendo Gaming / New article on Nintendo´s future! Must-read!!!

The way I see it is this - Planet GameCube and other sites devoted to Nintendo products wouldn't exist if there were people like us that are still Nintendo loyalists.

Am I disappointed that the GameCube is not as popular or successful as it should be? Hell yeah.

Will I buy the Cube's successor? You better believe it!

Aside from the Atari 2600, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, Sega Master System and Atari Lynx, I have never owned anything but Nintendo (going back to the Game & Watch series). With the exception of the Atari Lynx, All of the other systems were owned prior to me getting an NES and we all know how fast the Lynx came and went. I missed out on the SNES and did not own a system during that generation, although I played plenty of Super Nintendo when I visited friends. I also played Sega Genesis during that time, but I prefered the SNES. For some reason, Nintendo was just more appealing and the controller was more comfortable.

When the N64 came out, I bought it. It felt so good to be a console owner once again. I loved that machine. I would even go so far as to say that it was greatest console ever (so far). At that time the Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation and Sega DreamCast were around. Although I have never played a DreamCast, I have experienced the Saturn and PlayStation (again through friends). I was not impressed.

As soon as the news of Nintendo's "Dolphin" broke, I was excited. I couldn't care less about any other system. PlayStation 2 - who cares? X-Box? Fu*k Bill Gates. Sony's system bores me. X-Box seemed like a joke a few years ago and I'm still laughing at that thing. Neither system ever interested me, but the Cube always did - even before it was called the "GameCube".

Nintendo has never let me down. Even in the current generation, while I may be a bit disappointed that Nintendo lacks proper 3rd Party support, the GameCube library has a stronger line-up in terms of quality games than the Playstation 2 and X-Box combined (IMHO).

Do I think that Nintendo has a problem? Yes, absolutely. Poor advertising and an unfair (but justified) reputation of being a "kiddie company" have tarnished Nintendo's image in the eyes of many current generation gamers. I am confident that Nintendo is aware of their current situation and I believe that they are already trying to correct the problem with their latest advertising campaign (Soul Caliber II, Rebel Strike, WrestleMania X9, F-Zero GX, etc.)

Instead of pointing out all of Nintendo's faults, I think we should just sit back and watch what they do as we near the end of the GameCube's life and enter the next generation of console gaming. (Do I think the GameCube is dying - Hell No!)

I play with the GC controller. The game gives you two options, to do special moves with the C-stick (really cheap) or arcade style where you press a certain direction then press a button. I play with the arcade style and sure the GC controller is awkward at first but you get use to it, and then to a point where you feel really comfertable playing with it. Rent it see how you like it, keep playing even if you don't like the controller and then you'll find it great to play.

Thank You. That's the kind of response I was looking for. I have already played Capcom Vs. SNK 2 on the PS2 so I know it's definitely something that I am interested in. Like I mentioned earlier - I love the GameCube controller. I find nothing about it awkward at all. Don'tHate - you just helped Nintendo/Capcom earn another $20

*reaches in pocket for $20 - heads on out to the local video game store to buy Capcom Vs. SNK 2: EO*

According to various sites (such as Planet GameCube and IGN) Resident Evil: Code Veronica X is scheduled for release on September 9, 2003 - IGN has some screen shots of the GCN version. They said it's more-or-less a direct port of the DreamCast version with very minor visual enhancements.

Nintendo Gaming / Quality Retro Gaming With a Cube and a Player.

I bought my GameBoy Player the other for the exact same reason - I wanted to play some Old School games. The GBP was the best $50 I have spent in a long time. Unfortuantely since I don't own a GBA or GBA-SP, I had to start building a GameBoy library. I have spent $135 on GameBoy games to fill the void and feed my GBP!!!

If it's "Retro" games you are craving, there are plenty of titles available to satisfy your needs.

When I bought my GBP, I also bought a copy of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, which is the original Super Mario from the NES for the GameBoy Color.

I probably should have stopped there, but I couldn't...I had to run out and buy more games...

Super Dodge Ball (One of my favorite old NES titles - updated for the GBA)
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts
Doom
Advance Wars (I read the reviews, I heard all of the raves. I am now addicted)

I know it has been said many, many times before on the PGC Forums but...Thank You, Nintendo!

I read a review for the adapter to use the PS2 controller on the GC just the other day. I know a lot of people prefer the PS2 controller over the GCN and X-Box, but I honestly think Nintendo's controller feels the most comfortable. I have played my friend's PS2 a few times and I don't like the way the controller is designed. Forget about Microsoft's controller. That thing looks (and feels) like a science experiment gone bad. Maybe I just got used to Nintendo's controller design back in the N-64 days. Even though the GCN controller is shaped differently - the buttons, Analog Stick, D-Pad and C-Stick are all more-or-less in the same general area as they were on the N-64 controller (with the exception of the Z-Button). It feels comfortable to me. What exactly makes the controller so bad for this game?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: capcom vs snk2 question

I am wondering the same thing - All of the reviews I have read say to avoid playing Capcom vs. SNK 2 on the GameCube because the GCN controller makes playing the game very awkward. I was considering buying the game because I want a good fighter and I am not sure if I can wait until August 28th for Soul Caliber II. Most stores have the Capcom game for $19.99, and a friend of mine purchased it for his PS2 the other day. We tried it out and it very good. I almost bought it for the Cube but after reading all of the lackluster reviews, I decided to buy Street Fighter Alpha 3 to play on the GameBoy Player instead. Although it looks pretty good for a GameBoy Advance cartridge, I feel like something is missing.

1073
I don't know, all of my favorite N64 titles were 3rd Party games (believe it or not). One of them is already on the cube (RE2), and although I am hoping and praying for NextGen incarnations of my other 2 favorite games, I don't see it happening (Forsaken and World Driver Championship).

Whoa! I feel sorry for you. I couldn't imagine living in Iowa. I've always lived on the East Coast. Man I just couldn't even begin to fathom how frustrating it must be to be so behind on the times like that. If K-Mart is the only major retailer in your area, I feel as though they have some sort of responsibility to their customers to get all of the latest releases in a timely fashion. If you can't buy it from them, you really have no other alternatives (outside of purchasing on-line). I hate buying on-line (unless I am buying something on E-Bay). I would rather be able to walk into a store and buy it. That way there is no waiting for delivery and I can get a good look at the item before I commit to a purchase.

I bought the Animatrix the day it came out, but I haven't had the time to watch it yet!
