Nintendo Gaming / RE: VGCats; which game are they criticizing?
« on: January 22, 2007, 05:16:15 AM »
Can't we all agree that all gaming webcomics suck, Pennyarcade and VGcats alike?  Because they do.

Although the VGcats immediately before this one, with Starfox, is really good.  Only good one I've seen in years.

I like how all of you are still trying to justify all the games being linked together somehow.
They're not trying, not even a little bit.  Just accept this as truth and your lives will be much easier.

The Nintendo Gallery was occasionally boring, but I felt like the results merited the effort.

I agree with knowsnothing, block rod ftw!

My sister and my one friend who played it jumped right in.  They weren't spectacular with it, but they really enjoyed playing it and they did reasonably well.  My sister makes good star scores, she just isn't good at the racing aspect.

One might argue that if you consciously notice the music, the composer has failed.  The music in a game is meant to heighten the sense of presence in the game, not distract from it.
The only song that stand out to me now from the Zelda series are Song of Storms and the music on Mt Tamaranch in Link's Awakening.  I'd just sit and listen to those sometimes.  But they would have been distracting if they had been in a dungeon or something.
I love the ambience in this.  Arguably games like Metroid Prime have done the ambience/enjoyability mix better, but it's good.  I love the night-time field music.

The Metroid games period are not Miyamoto titles.  It was created by Gunpei Yokoi, and I don't think Miyamoto was at all involved with the creation of Metroid, Metroid II, or Super Metroid.
After that, not so sure.  So far as I know, the Metroid Prime games are more Miyamoto titles than the 2D Metroid games, in regards to what he was involved in creating.

Except that none of the Metroid games affect any of the other Metroid games, really.  Aside from some common strains like a reappearing Ridley (in a different form in nearly every game), the Metroid games act independently of each other.  So far, the only game that really has the chance to heavily influence another game (story-wise) is Metroid Fusion.  And no follow-up has been made to it yet.

I might be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure the Phazon meteor hit and the space pirates came to investigate.  The experimented with it, discovering its unusual qualities.  I think they had a metroid with them and it somehow fused with the Phazon in some way, and they'd been trying to emulate it ever since.  It broke free of their control.
It wasn't on Tallon IV (metroids' home planet is SR-388), nor was it on the meteor.  The pirates brought it with them, but the fusion with the phazon was more a fluke than anything.

Smash_brother: No.

Also, Metroid Fusion had very little to do with Metroids.  Really the plot of the Metroid games is pretty varied, not sticking to any set plot, not even the one its titled after.

I thought the first three books were terribly written, and really they are.  The third is a mild improvement.  The sixth one is probably the best as of now.
Anyway, that's irrelevant.  Super Metroid = Metroid Prime 1/2 (can't choose between them, so I judge them as one), followed by Zero Mission/Metroid Fusion, followed by the original.  Haven't played Metroid 2 yet.

General Chat / RE: Can I ask for girl advice?
« on: January 10, 2007, 10:46:53 AM »
Well, we gamers have to stick together and give the best advice we can give.  Besides, we're kindred spirits or something, right?  It wouldn't do, taking advice from a lady's man, because you aren't, no offense, a lady's man.

Anyway, my primary suggestion is that you don't come on too strong.  Don't say you've been thinking about her since she was with Wecker, that you've liked her a whole WHOLE lot, for three years going.  After you've been dating for a while, a few months, you quietly confess that you've liked her all this time.  And who knows, maybe she'll say the same.
But for now, just tell her that you like her, maybe mention that it's been for a while but certainly don't stress it.  Girls like flattery, not stalkery.  Ask if she wants to go on a date some time, pause, and then say "And this time without Ashley".  Or something to that effect.  Nothing fancy.  If she likes you, she'll go out with you.  If not, overdoing it won't help.

Also, I wouldn't mention that she reminds you of a video game character that you're attracted to.  Not even after a few months.

I'll give you some advice once a get back from class, but a quick bit of advice:

Don't go to a gaming forum looking for advice on girls.  I've never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Steven Kent "Pulls an IGN"
« on: January 10, 2007, 05:33:40 AM »
Steven Kent is wrong, big surprise.  Anyone arrogant enough to make broad assumptions like that is bound to be wrong.  C'mon, one individual assuming that he knows more than an entire company of people?  He was not right, he never was.  The key to success is not appealing to an existing, shallow market dominated by your competitors.  It's building the foundations for your own market, which can be built upon far more effectively than by following the philosophy "americanize americanize americanize".
Honestly, he's a prick.

My friend accidentally turned the game off with the power button, thinking it was for the controller.  Luckily we were between WiiSports games, so it wasn't a big deal.

Okay, this is kinda nuts.  Within two days of being back at school, I've already had three people talk about playing the Wii or how awesome it is, without any provocation on my part.
Impressive.

I intend to get WiiPlay, but mostly just as a bonus for getting a controller.
I'd like to play Warioware, preferably with a bunch of people in a questionable state of sobriety.  Looks awesome.  Just don't think I'll buy it.

Bill and I generally have similar tastes when it comes to games, but I've got to say outright that I disagree about Super Metroid.  Definitely in my top ten favorite games ever.

A few of those boss suggestions have elements that obstruct your view and hinder your perception.  While I think it can be really interesting, most people are prone to complaining about those sorts of things, calling them mistakes rather than brilliant details that more closely recreate the actual sensation of fighting ALIEN MONSTERS.

Metroid Prime has one of the best commercials I've ever seen.  It was spectacular.  Even the writing was great. "The cold silence of space only punctuates the feeling of death that emanates from this virtual and lifeless planet." I memorized it, it's that awesome.  (Actually I don't think that's exactly it, but it's very close.  Awesome commercial)

I'm quite a completionist.  For instance, I finished the Nintendo Gallery in Wind Waker.  I try to get 100% in every game.
But if it's too tedious or boring, I just say screw it.  Only if I can enjoy myself or challenge myself is it worth it.

Cannot wait for this game.  When is it supposed to come out.

I am frothing at the thought of this and Super Mario Galaxy.

I did the hot springwater thing at night and had absolutely no problem.  I don't know if I even saw an enemy.

Smoke39: Heart piece, I'm pretty sure

I agree, UncleBob.  It's my favorite Zelda and by far the best game I've ever played.
A Link to the Past was alright, but it was too much dungeon and not another other stuff.  That's why I love LA, MM, and WW so much.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Zelda Pronunciations
« on: January 03, 2007, 02:50:28 PM »
Well, Epona is the only one of those with a pre-existing meaning (as in, outside of Zelda), so you can probably look that one up.
For info
I can't find any specific pronunciation key, though.

I pronounce them the way Ian and Pro seem to.  We don't call French people Francians.  I don't what it would be, linguistically, but hill-ee-uhn doesn't sound like arse.
Actually, my pronunciation is closer to heel-ee-uhn, long e sound.

(See now IGN was right voice acting would resolve all this)
