Pretty good movie.  It's very overly prettied up (they make up for not knowing how to use a camera by making it look like they painted everything), the violence and action is often ridiculous and the use of slow motion is way too heavy, and most of the sideplots were completely uninspired (like Requiem said, the king brought it all), but that's not to say I didn't enjoy it.
The action was usually pretty great, and the general design of the production was spectacular.  I felt that some of the composition (with the CG-heavy make-up) was overdone, but most of it looked amazing.

Also, while I felt the hunchback sideplot was completely and utterly unnecessary, I really liked the  "May you live forever..." line.

I have a remarkable memory (visual memory, memory for events, conversations, movies, books, details, all sorts of things), but I can hardly ever remember something from a long time ago unless the memory is triggered.  Like, if someone asked me to tell a childhood story, I'd have to tell one of my pre-picked ones that I know for sure, or wait for a while and try to remember another one.  Sometimes random memories or details will rise to the surface, but usually they're held under until I start thinking about it hard (and then one memory tends to trigger off a whole bunch of others).
I have a pretty good memory for dates (I know a lot of birthdays), but I'm terrible at remembering appointments.  I almost always forget that kind of thing, and often, while I know the date, I forget to tell a person happy birthday when they're birthday comes. :P

Holy crap.
Suda51 has an excellent sense of style, and he knows how to make it flow.  Some people try a style like that, but it's stilted or forced.  His just works.
The loading screen is awesome.  The visual style/HUD/interface in general looks really compelling.

I'm really likin' the looks of the white fro'd child (girl?) with the sword.  This game is going to be ridiculous and fun.

I'm really loving the idea of this game.  Maybe I'll be able to word it eloquently sometime, but god, I'll give it a shot now.

It's beautiful.  The motion is so seamless and fluid, and it fits the Mario art style perfectly.  The art direction in this particular installment looks especially spectacular, and while all the worlds are disconnected they seem to fit together very well, perhaps because they are so abstract.

It reminds me a little of the obstacle course areas in Sunshine, except awesomer-ized.

The implimentation of gravity looks amazing, and the camera seems to work with it flawlessly, which is quite a feat.  I guess I'll have to play to be sure of something like that, but it looks great.  This of course ties into how the game functions with the controller and everything, it all seems very well put together.

I love the feel of all the tiny planets, being able to see what's ahead yet have it be so far away, the vast sense of the world you get (in part because it's in space, which is so vast, and in part because you can see so far).  The blasting off sequences are really nice, and I like the flair they've given to it.
Also, I can tell now, while playing the game and zooming through space, I'll notice a really awesome looking planet.  And I'll think "I wonder what that is", and get really excited for it.  It'll be an interesting feeling, getting those glimpses and wondering what's in store for you.

Like Bill mentioned, the attention to detail.  This may be what impresses me most.  Every planetette seems very unique, each has a different style and shape to it.  There are so many different ways of travelling, of obstacles and enemies, and each is very carefully and artfully crafted.  I could go on about this, but I'll let it rest with that.
Also, the planets still have that Le Petit Prince quality to them, which I love.  One of my favorite children's stories ever.

I really hope there's a boss that you fight over the course of several planets, with him following you, or you chasing him, or him flying through space while you try to meet him at certain planets.

Yeah, I think I'm more excited to play this than any game since. . . I dunno, maybe ever.  I've been drifting away from gaming a little recently; not a lot, but I've not been playing as much, partially because there aren't many games I'm interested in.  I have no doubts that this game will totally restore my interest fully.  I'll play it over and over and over, even after I've beat it (which is something I can't really do in something like Twilight Princess).
Lovin' it.  Can't wait.

There's a big difference between artsy and art.  I see games that strive to be artsy as essentially failures, or at the very least are hindered by their self-indulgence.  A game's art direction doesn't make it art, though it contributes to it.  A game's music doesn't make it art, though it contributes to it.  A game's gameplay is what make a game art, immersing the player in the game, having them experience emotional responses to what's happening in the game (ranging from awe to sadness to nostalgia to frustration to sheer bliss of accomplishment, and most often, FUN).
Nintendo, as far as I'm concerned, does that better than anyone else out there.

I, for one, have played and beat both of the Fire Emblem games released for Gameboy Advance and Path of Radiance, and enjoyed doing so.  I strove for reasonable completion, with support conversations and music and bonuses and such, but it'd take a ridiculous amount of time to get 100%, so unfortunately they're some of the few games that I haven't beat through and through.

GTA was hardly a last generation release.  GTA3, maybe.  But there's a reason for that three.  It's the third game.
Retro was a fluke, and had the benefit of Nintendo's help.

Even if it has online, you don't have to utilize it.  As long as the single player experience doesn't suffer (MP2 didn't suffer from its unnecessary multiplayer addition), why should it matter?

As an aspiring writer who has an interest in games, I don't know how I feel about this idea.  I want to contribute in some way to the discussion, but I could write pages upon pages about the relationship between a game's script and gameplay.  Hopefully I'll have the energy to write something more compelling later.

My main problem is, most game makers are terrible writers, and most writers have no conception of how games should function.  But more on this later.

Edit, regarding Strell's post: Actually, Terry Pratchett has actually done some video game stuff.  I don't know how heavily he was involved with their production, but there are games that take place in Discworld.  Most of them are pretty early PC games, but I think some text-based role-playing still goes on.  I don't know that much about it, though.  I've never actually played any of them.

I want great Nintendo games.  That's all I'm concerned about.  If a third party game worth purchasing comes out, that's great, and I'll get it, but that's not what I look for when I buy a Nintendo console (which is the only console I buy).

(seriously though, it didn't revolutionize something but it's a great platformer, tons of fun to play.  Also, best way to fight bosses is in tiny mushroom form.  Hells yes)

I'm with the Jungle Beat camp.  Totally should have made the list.  Thinking about it, I want to play it right now.

SSBM is simply the best fighting game ever created.  The depth and flexibility of the game is astounding.  My friends and I will all play together, but whenever we play, my one friend and I are sure to go one on one at least once.  We'll only have five lives and the match might last a half hour or longer.  We're so good at avoiding each other that we hardly ever accumulate damage.  It's incredible to experience.

I'll also note that while I really enjoyed Resident Evil 4, the game was way too long and repetitive.  I was ready for it to end when I finished the first disc; I remember being disappointed when it said enter disc 2.  It was just zombie, shoot, zombie, shoot, with only an occasional boss as a terrifying breath of relief.  I mean, I did enjoy it, but it got less good the more I played.

I also don't get the Sunshine hate.  Probably one of the most visceral and just purely fun platformers I've ever played.  While Mario 64 had a better layout, in terms of level design and all that, I felt that Super Mario Sunshine controlled better and had more possibilities.  They didn't fully explore them, but what they did have was pretty good.  The story was god-awful, yes, and the final boss was a bit disappointing, but I just plain enjoyed controlling Mario.
Also, the tropical atmosphere was somewhat repetitive, but I liked the vacation-y feel of it.  Plus I'm sick and tired of the grass/fire/ice standard video game environments.
I still intend to buy this game.  I never owned it, only borrowed it twice, extensively.

The other games I generally agree with, though I never owned or got into Rogue Squadron or Animal Crossing.

Very cool details.  God I love Nintendo.  I figured out a lot of these in the course of the game, messing around and stuff, but there are a few that I've got to see now.

Postman is also in Ordon.  He's at the back of the ranch, complaining about goats or something.  More later if I think of any.

I'm not Nintendo exclusive, but the third party games I buy tend to be pretty high caliber.  Not all of those are bad, of course, but several of them are just status quo mediocrity.

I don't want to sound too critical and dampen your spirits, but having high expectations isn't a bad thing.  So long as you recognize what games EXCEL and what games are simply good, and nothing more.
Also, if that Sonic game is 3D throw it away right now and get yourself a proper, 2D Sonic game.  Preferably Sonic 2.

I agree with what you said, Pap.  There are undeniably connections, and of course some vague strand holds the games together, but they don't function together in any coherent timeline.
I suppose they kind of resemble actual legends, in a sense.  Different accounts of what happened, a series of stories that all take place in the same area or under  similar circumstances, but don't fit together perfectly, due to details and facts being obscured by time and the faults of oral storytelling.
