General Gaming / RE: Problems with my XBOX 360

I finally replaced my dead system on Christmas Eve. Got an Arcade (since I already had an HDD and component cables), and went and bought a 6' HDMI cable for $15 down the street. It looks fantastic, and it's a Falcon motherboard, so hopefully it will last for 3 years and 1 day, so I'm forced to buy another.

Good god, 264k in a week, that would be nearly 1.16 million in a month. Back to outselling PS3 5:1 it seems, though PS3 had a good week, compared to it's "real" usual sales.

Hopefully they're trying to roll back some of the bans for people that didn't deserve it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Media streaming from a PC to Wii

Dodgy p2p downloads? I don't know what you're getting that there, or with the 150mb/10min encoding comment. In fact, I don't understand that post at all. XBMC is the greatest piece of homebrew to ever happen to a console.

It's actually very simple to do so, regardless of which version Xbox (there's 6 I believe) motherboard you get, but the 1.0 boards are the easiest, you get just drop in a solder-free modchip and be on your way. Alternatively, you can use a copy of 007 Nightfire (old original press) or MechAssault (same deal) and a memory card to soft-mod it. Also, the XBox outputs in 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i, if that's what you're asking. It can play some video formats in HD as well, and (quite) a few games run in 720p.

If you want a console that's a media center, go pick up a used Xbox at Gamestop for $60 or $70, then mod it and install Xbox Media Center. It's fantastic. You can swap the HDD for up to 160GB I believe, maybe even more nowadays, use many different streaming protocols, go online, view YouTube videos, Quicktime trailers, etc, etc. It plays back DiVX, xvid, WMV, MP3, DVD, VCD, SVCD, h.264, and just about anything else.

Thrill Kill is awesome, or at least was awesome for it's time. My game-store-owner-buddy actually got a "as close to final as possible" copy (yes, copy, as in CD-R) from one of the (pissed off) creators at an E3 show a long time ago, and burned me a copy of it. I believe the button press to pass the warning screen is different on this copy than several of the other beta versions on the internet.

The system inside the Elite is no different than the Core/Arcade/Pro (now), the paint job and the hard drive are the only difference. When the Elite debuted, the only difference (besides the obvious) was the "Zephyr" motherboard, which introduced HDMI, the HANA scaler chip, and Hitachi 79K DVD-ROMs (harder to mod, a soldered-on "passkey" is required) the rest was the same crap in every other console. All 360's have had HDMI, for a several months now, the Falcons have only been rolling out to stores in the past 2 months or so, and there are several Zephyr systems still out there.

I believe the retailers actually do pretty well on Wii's hardware sales. The wholesale is something like $235 IIRC, so they make $15 or so on each one. That may seem like chump change, but when you sell 50 of them in 5 minutes, that's a pretty quick $750. Also, when the PS3 launched, according to my game-store-owner-buddy, retailers had to pay about $297-$299 for each system, making $0-$3 off each system.

Everyone's got to remember that the original NiGHTS (and the Satrurn itself) was a *cult* classic, and a pretty big financial flop

Congrats, but I would have made sure it's a Falcon system before I bought it, as they are actually more dependable. The easiest way to tell is by the power rating - 175w is Falcon, 203w is most likely not. Also, you get all of that with the Pro system as well, but with 100GB less, though you'll probably never need it anyway.

I played it, it absolutely sucks. I don't think I ever nailed a single move, due to the absolute sh*t controls.

The key difference is there's about 135 million PS2s sold, and a pretty decent amount of PSPs as well, so it pays to stock a few games and accessories. The PS3 section at all the Gamestops near me are basically non-existent, aside from the giant stack of unsold RockBand bundles, and GH3 bundles in the "cubby holes" at the top of the wall.

PS1 has a few good games. Thrill Kill comes to mind, but you won't find this in the Playstation store, or on a retail disc anywhere, unless you play the watered-down version of the game known as "Wu-Tang: Enter the Shaolin".

I don't think that's always the case. Some people received HDMI systems in return for their old one, right when they started selling them.

Gamestop are bastards with their warranties. It's not a real 1-year warranty. I believe though, if you have to send it to Microsoft (which I would recommend anyway), they might send you a new system, which will have a new 1 year general/3 year 3 red light warranty.

All PSX games have worked on the PSP for a long time now (without the need a PS3...or a PS2 or a PSX...or any games). Sony only started supporting this feature today though.

You already own a DS too, no one's forcing you to buy another one.

I like them both, but it hurts to watch the UK version, because it makes you realize that the US version characters are basically clones, so you lose a sense of the "those are real people" feeling you get when you watch it. I think you should watch it more, Mr. Jack, it's almost the same show, I don't think the humor is very different at all.

I don't think there's any motion blur in Half-Life 2, but there definitely is in Portal.

PS3 is still being outsold by PS2 (and PSP, DS, Wii, and XBox 360), and Nintendo is still kicking everyone's ass, though Xbox 360 did very well, and PS3 did respectably well for about 2 weeks.

Also, GH3 on Wii outsold the 360 and PS3 version, though there was definitely a shortage of the XBox 360 version, but the Wii version is very hard to find as well.

I'm actually probably going to buy a new one soon too. Mine is working, as of now, but I've had to fix it a couple times myself (no warranty, as I opened it before the 3 years was announced), but I may sell it to my brother and use my Gamestop store credit to buy one of the new "Falcon" systems.

No, I don't think it's anything like Viewtiful Joe. Ultimate GnG might be though.
