Nintendo Gaming / Re: Official Sales Thread

Wow those are some impressive sales for the xbox one.

152
The free game promo started today and those Madden/Xbox one combo packs are nearly sold out.  Best deals so far is either ordering through MS store, you'll get the same deal as retailers but MS is throwing in $50 MS XBOX LIVE credit or ordering it through BestBuy who's throwing in 2 year sub for GCL (supposedly an $120 value).

-----------

Expect a big boost in both Xbox One and PS4 NPD numbers for September.

Wow, not a lot of Nintendo love these days, even Capcom is skipping the WII U/3DS :(.

What I remember about Bayonetta and also what I loved.

I'm talking about sega's software.  Sega was still producing decent titles, still had their teams together--nowadays, Sammy sega is all about the arcade gambling machines :(

156
Man, I would fire the entire MS marketing team.  I've said it since MS first announced an xbox console, MS needs an Japanese partner--would have gone with Sega (the 90's sega and not the sega of today) or even Capcom.

The 360 had a few exclusive JRPGs (Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia) but MS stopped trying after year 2 and the few Japanese 360 fans were left in the cold.

-----------------------------

On the up side, at least in the states things are looking slightly less dim with MS giving away one free game with the purchase of a console making the one ($50) cheaper than then PS4 destiny bundle but they still fooked up with the COD bundle IMO--paying $100 more for an $60 game and double storage which still won't be enough space since games are eating 30+GB.

Plasma always had the better black levels and colors (especially the bright bold one) but generally cost three times as much and they run hot (the can eat 400 watts which is a considerable amount of heat).

LED's are still the better gaming option IMO due to the fact plasma still have burn in's issues which is not covered by a warranty (a buddy of mine found that out the hard way).

Some good deals going on for Kmart SYWR members (which is free to get anyhow),  There's an $20 facebook coupon (one coupon per email use) which can stack with existing preorders rewards.

https://www.facebook.com/shopyourway/posts/934698423223382
After you enter your email address you'll get an email with a barcode, that barcode is the reward coupon code.  After you check the game you want in your cart you can add coupons--type in that code.

Managed to snag Smash Brothers WII U for $25 (well $65 with $40 store credit--20 for the facebook coupon and 20 for preordering the game).

TalkBack / Re: New Nintendo 3DS Models Announced
« on: August 30, 2014, 10:30:29 AM »
Was surprised they didn't announce this at e3,  the 3ds sales spiked last year so it was only a matter of time before a reversion especially in Japan who go nuts over "new" gadgets.

On the up side, Nintendo themselves might be more supportive of "CCP" options now since the 3DSLL will have those features as standard.  I would've loved KI but the controls were a mess--would rebuy in a heart beat if an second analog control option was available.

Yeah, I too recommend some of these no-name brands as well.

And you're really not going see much of a difference in quality simply switching from lcd to led and the same with the resolution at 32 inch.  I would hunt around for an 42 1080 LED (non-smart) set.  I picked up mine (42 hisense brand) for about that much and it's on par with my Toshiba which set me back thousands :(

Black Friday is just around the corner and the last couple of years they had 50inch specials going for $300 or less if you don't mind waiting in line.

Yes, HDMI can carry audio DD5.1, hell it has enough bandwidth to carry True HD audio and the WII U uses PCM 5.1 uncompressed.  The ugly--most headphones don't support PCM 5.1 and hell most receivers don't unless they are up to Dolby TrueHD support.

The WII U is capable of using PL2, but it's locked in WII Mode only to avoid paying Lucas Arts royalities.  MS did something similar back during the Xbox launch where DVD playback was blocked and you had to buy an remote to access it.

Was listed from an European website as 7 pounds each ($roughly $12), so the US price might be $9.99 a piece or $15. There's been sweet deals with eshop cards, the last one was $15 off $50.  Have to keep an eye out for some more but my local BB/kmarts seem to be closing and there's usually an fire sale to go along with it :).

Late 3rd quarter and of course 4th quarter's sales are usually when console sales spike and it's going be interesting to see what the three manufactures are going to do.

Price reduction and holiday bundles usually do wonders with sales, hell even that installment plan MS had before could easily be a factor.

If I was Nintendo I would go with an $200 console (with gamepad) with $50 eshop credit.  And maybe an holiday bundle (limited edition) with a new color at $300 bundled with 3 games (one of those 1st party, one indie, one third party) and or course an extra wii u gamepro controller.

Doesn't matter, most in NA own multiple systems, weather it's old generation, pc, or handheld.  August is a slow month, which means a game like Bayonetta would be able to standout.

Was thinking just the opposite.  Re!easing late Oct has it going up against something like 30 other games so it's likely to be overlooked by all but the hardcore gamer that make up 5% of total sales.  If anything Nintendo should move it to the end of August which would give it some breathing room.

Overall Nintendo had the best showing but I still think they failed to address the third party issues.  Just two games from third parties, just dance and skylanders??

Starfox was somewhat a shocker to me, the series is never a big seller so I figured Nintendo would have gone with something like Metroid.  Speaking of which Retro was a no show?  Wonder what they are working on?

168
I didn't bother watching the entire 2 1/2hrs and only looked up at the highlights like LBP3 which is coming out Nov.  Grim Fandango was a great surprise though I kinda wanted an sequel instead of an "remastered".  So many games got pushed back to 2015 so it's kinda hard to get excited about them but Batman looked great.

No Kingdom Hearts III news, I knew it wasn't going be there but it all but confirms an 2015 launch now.

There's a very hardcore Halo 2 community that nearly went apeshit when MS pulled Xbox Live support.  Now 10 years later the same game is being reintroduce with prettier graphics but with all the gameplay/flaws intact.

It's actually not a bad bundle of stuff (five games (halo 1-4 and reach) which 2 is remaster, all the maps (over 100), and an season pass to the TV series which I look forward to.  Kinda wished they threw in digital copies of the novels and comics but I'm still pretty pleased with the collection.

E3 scorecard for MS Xbox one--  B-

MS showed off tons of stuff and focused on the games but there really wasn't that "big" announcement and most of the stuff was just CGI.  The few "new" announcements were either expected like another Tomb Raider game or games that are cult hit at best--crackdown 3 or phantom dust 2.  Really MS?  Out of all the IPs then own they went with these two?  Another year for me with no Crimson Skies 3, Conker's Bad Fur Day 2, or Jade Empire 2.

Evolve was the highlight game for me for MS E3 show.

Going need a patch soon, boost hopping is going kill the online play if it isn't fix (unlimited boost just by hopping).  Played my first game online and three Japanese players had the boost going while the rest of scratched our heads at what was happening.

In the beginning of ACIV the navel battles were pretty much one sided but once you do more of the main campaign, more weapons upgrades become available and you can easily knock out all those bases.  For now you should just focus on the smaller islands for quick cash and animal skins.

Finished up a couple of games this week:

Bravely Default (3DS)--man I was so loving this game up until chapter 5 when the story just takes a nose drive.  Hell not only did the story staled but there wasn't any new areas to even explore.  So for 2nd half of the game you just played repeated dungeons and boss battles (some of them you fight 5 freaking times).

Super Mario 3D Land (WII U)--loved it.  Only gripe was the game was a tad bit easy with only one or two stages that even slowed me down.  Wished it had online so I could try the MP, couldn't get any of my friends to even look at it (COD whores the lot of them).

Thief (PS4)--sadly disappointed with this title as well.  The map system is a joke with a lot of places end in an deadend, forcing you to find hidden way around which was fine at first but there's no way to mark those "exits" so you'll end up having to hunt them down again and again while you do send missions.  Really wished for quick travel.  The story was forgettable, the characters undeveloped, and the gameplay was more or less the same ole stuff.

173
Finally purchased my PS4 (amazon used/open sale for $300) and here's a couple of my initial thoughts.

The manual was a joke, didn't even point out where the eject button was :( luckily others had a few comments and a youtube video helping us out.  Since I got mine used I wanted to make sure the DVD drive was emptied.

Yeah, there really isn't enough USB ports and I wished they had a few in the back but I bought I cheap USB 4 way Hub so I can leave my external storage and fightstick plugged in.

Not sure why this hasn't been addressed yet but the PS4 controller has a built in speaker (like the WII) which games like Killzone uses but there's no way to disable the damn thing for us Headphone users.  Sure you can turn it down but there's no way to hear those "audio" files though normal speakers????   Can't believe there hasn't been a patch for this yet.

So far I'm unimpressed with the touch pad.  Not sure if any game is going make good use out of it but right now I see it as an expensive that really isn't needed.

I use them.  Their estimates are usually on the mark or within a reasonable margin of error.  Also, NPD numbers are still estimates so their numbers are never 100% neither.

NPD back in the days used to be great but nowadays a quick top 10 and a few hardware numbers/month is all you get (at least for the general public anyhow).  Miss the ole NPD.

For those that Preorder Mario Kart 8 from Kmart should be getting their orders shipped.  Mine shipped today and my Pay your Way credit was added to my account (though only $30.60 and not the $36.60 I was supposed to get)/ that credit expires on 6/30th.

Also Kmart ships UPS which usually hands over small packages to my local USPS which means I won't be playing this weekend :(.
