Nintendo Gaming / Re: Splatoon!!
« on: February 04, 2015, 05:28:02 PM »

"-The interview is with producer Hisashi Nogami, who is known as the director of every Animal Crossing up to City Folk, and directors Yusuke Amano, who also directed NSMB2, and Tsubasa Sakaguchi, who was a character designer on Twilight Princess and art director on Nintendo Land.
-The Inkling city (where the plaza is) is known as 'Highcolor/Haikara City' in Japanese.
-The concept of two teams of four shooting ink in a turf battle has been there since the original prototype, even though the characters where tofu-like blocks at the time.
-They experimented with other team sizes, but found with more than four players felt like they had little effect on battles, and with less than four that they had too much responsibility.
-Killing/attacking opponents online to prevent them from painting ink is just one strategy to win. You get no points or advantage directly from doing so.
-Hero mode uses basically the same controls as online matches, so anyone with difficulty in the can use the hero mode to practice.
-Ideally, you'll be matched with players of a similar rank to you (based off of experience points earned in matches). If not enough players, they'll put you with people further away from your rank. If there's only 8 players, you'll be matched together.
-While online is focused on just painting the ground, hero mode focuses on using the ink to move forward.
-Amano says he wants you to be able to look at the map on the GamePad and see where needs to be worked on for your team.
-No way to directly communicate with people you've been randomly matched with. They will appear post-match in your Plaza, where you can check out their gear, weapons, and comment.
-They picked squids because they were the best at representing the gameplay present in the prototype.
-Music for stages is random. Possible that I'm misunderstanding, but each player will have a different song while playing.
-Music is designed to be the sort that would be popular with the young Inklings involved with the turf battles.
-Rather than making some huge number of stages, they want to create stages that feel different when you use different weapon combinations.
-You don't earn money for gear in single player for balance reasons. Someone could grind money in hero mode and have their first online match with high level gear.
-In the final stages of development now.
-Aiming for, more or less, a simultaneous worldwide release.
-They plan on supporting the title post-release."

Can't chat with teammates in a team-based shooter?  Thanks Nintendo :(

In terms of ranking for two year sales:  Dreamcast<wiiu<n64<ps3  The n64 had 15 million at end of year 2, wiiu is at 9 million.

Forgot the Gamecube but it was at 15 million mark as well.

"Random reinforcements from the edges of the map can screw you over if you haven't already played a scenario and know to expect them. "

Yeah, they never really address this with the series, but in later games they usually allow you one turn after enemy respawns.  In the first game they respawn and it's their freaking turn :( which is annoying as all hell in the later chapters.

The archers get an long bow which is quite deadly since it allows them 2+ attack range so they can attack without worrying about the counterattacks.

The WII U numbers are a joke, Nintendo should FIRE it's marketing team because it really doesn't understand the Western Market at all.  MS on the other hand seems to "correct" it's mistakes, it drop the Kinect, lowered the price and now it's back in the game while Nintendo went ahead and bundled two OLD games instead of newer ones.

Sony had a huge comeback last gen with the PS3 but I can't see that happening with Nintendo's WII U with retail and 3rd party support.

To be honest I can't see 2015 being a great year for sales for the WII U neither, sure Zelda an known AAA title but that's about it for "system sellers".

Well Japanese's smash numbers are in: 230K opening week, less than SMB Melee and Brawl's by a good chunk.  Hardware wise a slight boost but nothing of note (24k for the week).

So having an 3DS version really did hurt the WII U Japanese sales in IMO, Nintendo should have made exclusive fighters for each platform because it doesn't look like people are double-dipping.

Price cut and an better bundle.  Also Nintendo needs to work with retailer--they need stores to carry more units and actually display/promote them. It's to late IMO for a major comeback, best Nintendo can do is play it safe and not lose any more money on the WII U.  Ride it out until 2016-2017.

"Taiko no Tatsujin: Tokumori!" had to google this one in....got a good laugh :0.  Some of those Japanese games are just wacky.

Pokémon killing it in Japan again.  Not sure if the US sales will be that high--think the pokemon craze is dying out in the NA market.

Kmart just cancelled by Super Smash Bros WII U preorder (which was placed in JUNE!). ^%U*&_^.

Not sure what to make out of them but this is my second order that was cancelled in the last couple of weeks (Bayonetta 2 being the other one).

:(  For those that preordered from them you might want to check your status because Kmart didn't even bother to send me an email.

Man instead of being so negative I'm going post my spinoff requests.
Mushroom Kingdom...think Kingdom Hearts but set in nintendos ips.
Bowser's Large and in Charge....a comedy platformer staring the big ole guy
Punch Out Fitness...that uses dual remotes.
Metroid Spinoff where you play as competing mercs trying to capture Samus

The PS4 is selling quite well, only second to the WII first year sales while the WII U is on life support.  Nintendo really needs to drop it's price now that MS has made it's move because Smash Bros alone won't be enough.

It's sad that the Gamepad is keeping the price high because the majority of titles don't even use the features other than off-screen play.

137
Actually the wii u is selling alot worse then the GC, according to nintendos own numbers roughly 7.25 million units sold vs 10.5 million gc's sold for the first 21 months of each console.

MS needed to reduce price and i'm glad they finalliy realized it but I don't think they were agressive enough but maybe with retailers push the xbox might be able to push 2 million sales in the last quarter.

Well it doesn't look like any store in my area (Walmart/Kmart/Gamestop/BestBuy) is going carry Bayonetta 2 in-store.  Damn shame Nintendo didn't try to market this game better.

On the upside, Playboy seemed to promote the game better than even Nintendo themshelves.  http://www.playboy.com/galleries/pamela-horton-nintendo-bayonetta/slide-1

BTW:  my preorder copy is "missing".  it's not like I'm in a big rush but damn why ME!

Don't think Nintendo cares about Hyrule Warriors sales because it's main publisher is Koei Tecmo, I think Nintendo's publishing the pal region.  The sales actually are pretty good for Koei Tecmo's, right around other DW games.

Pretty sure it's going drop like a rock and be a bargin bin title for Black Friday.  I can't see myself paying $60 for Hyrule Warriors but I might think about it at $20.  Would have gotten in on Kmart's Preorder special ($40 rewards) but it was Out of Stock by the time I saw the deal.

Just finished up the demo --three gold metals first playthrough.  Evade works to well, all you have do is smash the evade button until witch time happens then switch to attack.  A bit to much QTE's for my liking and I still hate the "new" Bayonetta look.

LOL, MS sold 50% of it's xbox one shipments does that make it an success?  % mean jack in Japan other than you can figure out the total shipment which is roughly 60K which isn't high at all.  Stores won't have to reorder which means not another reprint anytime soon and that's going kill the game in Japan.  Japan has very few "evergreen" titles that are in the "action" genre.

And Bayonetta 2 isn't just an niche game though, it's budgeted as a "AAA" title (I'm guessing 15-20milion to make).  Why does they matter?  As the publisher Nintendo doesn't really need the money as much as they need a 3rd party title to sell well on the WII U, something to draw back it's lost 3rd party support.  As the developer, Platinum Games need a hit, how many titles did they produce that netted any publisher a profit?  And finally as a gamer like myself, I wanted Bayonetta 2 to sell well for the series to continue of course :0--can't really see that happening at this time (it's all up to the NA/EU market).

"Nintendo was the only one willing to fund it."

Sega didn't want to fund it doesn't make it everyone.  PG chose Nintendo largely because of the prior relationship (as clover studios) and the fact Nintendo's console was the market leader last gen.

Bayonetta's IP still belongs to PG and if someone wanted to they could buy PG and "remaster/rename" Bayonetta 2 for other consoles but it's going have to make a decent push in the NA/EU markets for anyone bothering another glance.

----------------------
In case you're saying Bayonetta 2 can't be "ported" because Nintendo published it, all you have to do is look back at Mass Effect--a game funded/published by MS and yet EA still ported it over to the PS3. :0

Sadly Bayonetta 2 selling just as bad as I predicted.  Nintendo/PG wasted time and money porting over the first game and added a bunch of "Nintendo" costumes which didn't help sales one bit.  The bad news is this is going kill any hope for NA marketing push from Nintendo, it's going be lucky if it sell 1/4 million lifetime.

Since Nintendo already announced an improved 3DS which comes out in a few weeks I'm surprised people are still buying the current one without the price being reduced.

The hardcore fanboy in me died today.  2.5 billion could have funded 100's of "new" games or hell even fund MS dead IPs which MS has been collecting over the years.  MS keeps trying to attract the "casual" gamers, first with the Kinect and now Minecraft 2 and I feel like each time MS is forgetting about the "core" gamers who's supporting them all these years.  And they wonder why Xbox One isn't selling :(

Couple of reasons why I think Nintendo's WII U numbers are going be low this season:

1.  Retailer store space:  The Wii U is combined with the WII into one tiny shelf way in the back in 90% of the retailers around me: Walmart, Gamestop, Target, ect.

2.  Not on kids wishlists.  Ask any preteen/teenager if they want an WII U and they are going say they want the next GTA/COD/Minecraft mostly because their friends play them.

3.  No marketing push--you have to spend money to make money and Nintendo's hasn't made any effort on this font. Activision are whores at this, look at Destiny for example; Activision spent $200 million just to market that one game and Nintendo hasn't spent that much for marketing an entire CONSOLE let alone one game.

General Gaming / Substandard year in gaming--2014--GotY contenders?
« on: September 13, 2014, 05:47:51 AM »
Pretty damn weak year in gaming IMO.

Looking at my GOTY contenders and it's a pretty damn bleak list, hopefully fall/winter titles add some sweats but this year's best titles are a few remakes (the last of us for example).

My list of games that fell short of the hype:
Watchdogs
Bravely Default
TitanFall
Dark Souls 2
Destiny

=================

Right now it looks like GOTY might go to an indie game (Shovel Knight).

Depends on when Smash WII U is released.  Right now I'm content waiting a month or so for the WII U version but if Smash gets delayed until 2015 then I'm more than likely just cancelling my WII U preorder and buying the 3DS version.

The trick in Fire Emblem is not to try to balance out your characters.  To many people switch low level party members in to try to level them up (or to get extra dialog) but to win at FE you're better off just overcharging the same damn party members you start with.

For example in FE Shadow Dragon my Able and Frey were freaking beastly--and my Marth had his stats maxed out at that point.  Also key tip in FE is feed only your main character boasting items since your required to use them anyways and try to get them in early fights to level them up faster.  To many people avoid using Marth because if he dies, game over, but you really should boast him in early missions just to make the game that much easier in the end.
