TalkBack / Nintendo Download - May 15, 2014

Mega Man, Moon Chronicles and more!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37448/nintendo-download-may-15-2014

Some interesting titles this week here on the download. The 3DS continues to get some attention, with Mega Man IV and Moon Chronicles: Episode 1 coming out today. Wii U gets its fair share as well, with Color Zen and Adventures of Lolo available as well. Heck, there's even another Nintendo DS title out today! So what are you waiting for, check out and see what's on the docket today!

Wii U Downloads

Scram Kitty and His Buddy on Rails - $9.99

Now why would you tell a kitty to scram? That's not very nice. Or maybe that's just his name, I dunno. As the name suggests, it's a literal on rails shooter, so it should be a fun time.

Color Zen - $3.99

From what the title says, it seems that one will reach their zen by...I'm not sure. Seems to be a puzzle game, so perhaps you'll be matching colors here. Don't take my word for it, however; check it out and see for yourself!

Wii U Virtual Console

Adventures of Lolo - $4.99

Never played this title to be honest. I've heard about it, but I see the screens and...yeah. I'm sure there's a fanbase, and there are probably many out there hyped for this newest Virtual Console release.

Nintendo 3DS Downloads

Arc Style: Baseball 3D - $4.99

If you're bored with Rusty's Real Deal Baseball (and how could you be?) this might be something to consider. With summer approaching, looks like the best thing to do right now is to go outside and have some fun...inside on your 3DS!

Candy Match 3 - $7.99

The trilogy of Candy Match games has finally come into fruition. In this epic third part of the series, the goal seems to be the same: match candies. Are you up for the task?

Moon Chronicles: Episode 1 - $8.99

Renegade Kid's latest is finally out for all to play! It's not every day that a FPS comes out for the 3DS. It's the first in a series of episodes that will continue the story of the original Moon title for the Nintendo DS.

Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console

Mega Man IV - $2.99

Mega May continues with the fourth iteration of Game Boy Mega Man games. Dr. Wily sure had a lot of evil and maniacal ideas to destroy the earth. Instead of Mega Man defeating a bunch of robots maybe the police should have, you know, investigated Dr. Wily or something. Seems to be up to no good if you ask me.

Nintendo DS Downloads

Deep Sea Creatures - $4.99

This seems to continue the trend of nautical based games on the DS in 2014. Weird to see new releases coming to this system but hey, that's cool. Seems you'll be using the touch screen to use sonar technology in order to find creatures hidden in the deep sea.

Sales

Big John Games is having a sale on the 3DS eShop. Prices for their titles will be reduced through June 5 at 9 am PST.

Atlus is having a sale on the 3DS eShop as well. Titles such as Code of Princess and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, among others, will be reduced to $14.99 through June 2 at 9 am PST. This sale starts on May 19 at 9 am PST.

Heck yeah, comparison footage! Now I remember how great those N64 stages were, I haven't played them in ages.

Not only goes this game look pretty, it sounds pretty too. Love the live soundtrack.

TalkBack / Nintendo Promises Changes in Future Tomodachi Life Games
« on: May 09, 2014, 05:51:03 PM »

The company responds further in wake of their initial response.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37387/nintendo-promises-changes-in-future-tomodachi-life-games

Nintendo responded further today regarding the absence of same-sex marriages in Tomodachi Life.

"We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life," the company stated on their website. They further explained that a patch to include same-sex marriages wasn't feasible.

They did, however, promise changes in further installments of the Tomodachi Life series, if such come out.

"We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series," they stated, "we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."

Nintendo has been criticized for its initial response to the Miiquality movement in social media sites, earlier citing that it did not intend to venture into social commentary with the games. Their earlier response fueled further controversy, not just from gamers themselves but from various organizations as well, including GLAAD.

TalkBack / New Gameplay Features in Kirby: Triple Deluxe
« on: May 02, 2014, 04:14:19 AM »

What's new in the latest Kirby adventure?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/37326/new-gameplay-features-in-kirby-triple-deluxe

65.png

In my other pre-launch  article for Kirby: Triple Deluxe, I looked at the various modes you’ll be playing once you nab the game on May 2. For this article, let’s take a look at the new features the game has. At its core, I can say from the offset that Kirby remains true to it’s roots; if you've played a Kirby game before, the 3DS iteration will make you feel right at home. That doesn't mean it’s the same old song and dance, however.

There are many things to collect throughout the game, one of which are key chains. There’s usually one or two strewn about in a level which look like silver tinted question marks with a chain around them. These are for collecting purposes only as far as I can tell, but there’s a multitude to collect. They all denote various enemies and items throughout previous games, such as Kirby’s Dream Land, among others. There are also gold tinted question marks as I collected a couple of these as well that are more obscure.

45.png

One of the new gameplay features is the Hypernova ability, which usually takes place at the end of a level. As you go throughout a stage, there might sometimes be a beanstalk emerging from the ground and handing you what appears to be a bean or fruit or some sort. Once Kirby eats it, he loses his ability and becomes a multitude of colors! His inhalation ability is upgraded, meaning he can inhale large items and bosses he normally can’t. This becomes quite the interesting mechanic later on, as players find ways to clear the stage using the ability. It also comes in handy later on towards the end of the game, but perhaps I shouldn’t speak further...

At some points in the game, you’ll have to use the 3DS in order to maneuver about a stage via gyroscopic control. Precision and timing are a must if you want to safely and efficiently get through these parts of the game. There are also points in the game where you’ll come across stages where the goal is to use specific abilities to solve puzzles, and these make use of the gyroscopic features as well.

6.png

Sun stones are also an important part of the game as well. There are different amounts in each stage, ranging from one to four, and they are expertly hidden throughout the stage. You need a specific amount in each stage in order to unlock that stage’s boss. Some are expertly hidden around a level, so extra digging around might be required.

TalkBack / Game Boy Turns 25: A Look Back
« on: April 28, 2014, 03:43:20 PM »

The NWR staff look back on their experiences with the portable that started it all.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/roundtable/37262/game-boy-turns-25-a-look-back

On April 21, 1989 the Game Boy was released in North America. Now on it's 25th anniversary, we take a reflective look in this week's roundtable. The NWR staff talk about their first memories with the original Game Boy, what games they first laid their eyes on, and the biggest experiences they encountered while playing the Game Boy (aside from the frequent battery changes). Check it out below!

Neal Ronaghan

My earliest memories of Game Boy involve playing Super Mario Land 2 and DK '94 ad nauseam. Those games ruled my little game-playing life for a time. I also enjoyed Tecmo Bowl, College Slam, and Donkey Kong Land on my big o'l brick. The later days were riddled with Pokémon and Game Boy Camera. It's kind of funny because I have such fond memories of the Game Boy, but as a kid, I didn't really play a wide variety of games. I just hope the 3DS Virtual Console gets more and more games that I missed!

Zach Miller

I got my Game Boy when I was 8. It was a revelation--partially because I didn't have an NES, but also because I could take it everywhere. The games I played initially were the games I basically got for my birthday that year: Super Mario Land, Tetris (which came with the system), The Castlevania Adventure, Solar Striker, and Boomer's Adventure in ASKMIK Land. I remember that I used to get really hot and itchy when I was nervous, so when I got to the end of SML, I was a hot, itchy mess. That game was tough for an eight-year-old! In fact, the only thing that gave me trouble was the boss with the big sea dragon at the end of World 2. My dad found a workaround, though: you can shoot the blocks out behind him and totally skip fighting him! I also beat Castlevania like a year later (maybe two) and that was quite an achievement. It's been muscle-memory ever since. I could never beat Solar Striker (and still can't). I also remember getting Bubble Bobble around that time. The tiny screen does that game no favors. The Game Boy was largely my vehicle entertainment. My family used to take camping trips in far-off parts of the state (everywhere in AK is at least an hour away) and I'd hole up in the backseat and play Game Boy. This is also how I entertainment myself DURING camping trips. I also remember bringing my GB on camp outs with the Boy Scouts. There was lots of feverish game-swapping. I discovered Wario Land that way. Eventually I got an NES, and an SNES, and all those other things, but the Game Boy will always be special to me.

Nicholas Bray

The only reason I wanted a Gameboy was because of Pokemon. I ended up buying a GB Pocket with Super Mario Land with my christmas money, and then had to save up for Pokemon Blue, which took me ages.

Super Mario Land was pretty fun though, but difficult. I was also such a Mario noob that I didn't understand why the bricks weren't breaking when I was little Mario. Up until that point I had only ever played a bit of Mario years before at a friends place.

A year or so later I wanted a GB camera. One day I was taken out of school to go do something with my mum, as I was flipping through the EB catalogue at the shopping centre I mentioned I wanted to get one. She said ok and we went and bought it. It wasn't until I was playing with it at home later that she said that I had to pay the money back...

Bryan Rose

I have two distinct experiences with the Game Boy.

Tetris, for one. I mean, who didn't play Tetris on the original Game Boy? The fact that you can play one of the most addictive games of all time (forget this Candy Crush monetizing nonsense) anywhere you wanted was amazing,if you had the battery power anyway. Also, the music. I think that's all I need to say regarding that!

But the biggest experience for me was Pokemon. I remember seeing the previews in Nintendo Power, but wasn't sold on it. I then watched the anime on the local UPN affiliate in the mornings and that's when I got sucked into that world. I soon got Pokemon Blue, and even though I was not the most advanced guy when it game to role playing games at the time, I was able to make my way through the game thanks to it's accessibility. I had a blast collecting the eight gym badges and going on to challenge the Elite Four. I knew all of the glitches and cheats to make my way through (Cinnabar Island trick shout out) but I could never get the elusive Mew that everyone told me for sure there was a way to get, something having to due with the weird truck at the S.S. Anne area. Years later I discovered there actually was a way, but it didn't matter. Pokemon was what made the Game Boy for me. And 16 years later, I'm still spending over a hundred hours trying to catch them all.

Andrew Brown

Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. The original Game Boy and this particular game was the first piece of Nintendo technology I owned. It's  dead nowbut I still have my collection of cartridges and I still play them on occasion.

I think the Game Boy also sparked my lifelong love of video game music. I remember hooking up my sister's old Walkman headphones, chucking DK '94 in and replaying the tower stages in the final world just so I could reach the final boss, find a safe spot to park myself without getting hit by DK's barrels, jack up the volume to ear-damaging levels and just groove the heck out until the timer expired. Those were good times.

Andy Goergen

I never actually owned any Nintendo handheld until the Game Boy Advance.  I owned both a Sega Game Gear and even a Sega Nomad before I owned anything with "Game Boy" in the title.  Yeah, I was that kid who kept touting the color screen of the Game Gear as evidence of superior hardware.

That said, I remember being entranced by the Game Boy several times in my life.  My best friend as a kid was a girl one block down who had an original Game Boy and Super Mario Land.  I must have played that thing for hours at her house, but it was never enough because I'd always have to give it back so we could go do something else. Really though, the best time was when I borrowed another friend's Game Boy and their copy of Link's Awakening and took it to band camp my 10th grade year.  I stayed up very late playing the game, despite being mocked by my friends for my supposed anti-social behavior.  I didn't really care, because I hadn't loved a video game as much as I was loving Links Awakening in a really long time.  The music was perfect, the gameplay was solid, and it was an adventure you could finish in just about a week.  One of those perfect, memorable experiences. And (TWIST ENDING) that's why I bought a Game Gear.

Guillaume Veillette

My experience is similar to Zach's in that I did not own an NES. So the Game Boy was my only way to get a fix of Mario. Plus, it was my first real experience playing a Metroid game, my first experience playing an RPG (English-French dictionary in hand), my first play through a Zelda game... All quality entries in those franchises, too!

So many memories.

Happy birthday, Game Boy!

Danny Bivens

My first experience with the Game Boy started in the early 90's when my older brother got the original fat unit bundled with Tetris. Since my parents saw how much fun that my younger brother and I were having with the thing, they decided to also get us Game Boys shortly thereafter. My first game was King of the Ring, a port of the NES wrestling game of the same name. It wasn't a great game by any means, but is sunk hours into it just excited to be able to play some pro wrestling on the go. Other games like Solar Striker, Kirby's Pinball Land and Radar Mission were constant go-to games for everyone in my family. Everyone, including my parents played the thing to death.

After being dormant for a few years, I started getting excited about portable gaming with the ensuing release of Pokémon in 1998. After getting Red that Christmas, my interest had been rekindled in handheld gaming and I just kept on going from there.

Tom Malina

Like some of the other staffers, much of my childhood game took place on the Game Boy in the absence of an NES. My first experience with the Game Boy was playing Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 on my cousin's handheld. I had become so enraptured by Wario Land that when I was gifted my own portable a year later, I immediately borrowed the cartridge - to this day, it is still in my possession (oops!) and my time earning the best ending in that game remains one of my top gaming memories.

While Wario Land was the initial point of entry, my major addiction to Pokémon, perhaps unsurprisingly, was what kept me an active user of my Game Boy into the 2000s... not to mention a whole bunch of other games preceding it. Here's to your 25th birthday, you big old brick - you were a tonne of fun.

TalkBack / Kirby: Triple Deluxe Review
« on: April 28, 2014, 11:01:27 AM »

Kirby is back! How is the pink puffball’s first 3DS adventure?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37280/kirby-triple-deluxe-review

After a few years on the down low, Kirby and company make their original debut on the 3DS with Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Dating back to the series debut in 1992, Kirby games are best known for their whimsical aesthetic and simple gameplay. This remains true for Triple Deluxe. It’s a cute, harmless title that everyone of all ages can pick up and play very easily. Fortunately, Triple Deluxe is one of the most engaging experiences since Kirby Super Star for the SNES. The game’s use of the 3DS’s gyroscopic sensor as well as the new abilities Kirby obtains throughout the game, make it a unique experience in spite of its occasional simplicity.

19.png

This time around, Kirby just happens to get entangled into a beanstalk that ascends to the sky, where a mysterious figure kidnaps King Dedede. Although the game doesn’t have you exploring Dream Land like in previous titles, the game’s locales still feel quite familiar, with the first world boss being everyone’s favorite tree, Whispy Woods. Abilities are ever present as well. Choosing the right kind of ability is important, as throughout the game there will be challenges and puzzles that require specific abilities. This is kind of annoying at times, because sometimes the abilities you need can’t even be obtained through the stage.

One of the major new additions is the Hypernova feature that appears in some stages. When Kirby interacts with the Hypernova fruit, he gains a rainbow hue and can inhale large amounts of items and parts of the stage that he previously would not be able to do. This adds a new, unique gameplay style that really livens up the experience. It’s nothing revolutionary, but when it pops up, it is rather fun to solve the puzzles that arise.

5.png

Hypernova isn’t everything, though, and Triple Deluxe makes fabulous use of the 3DS system features, too. In some sections, you have to use the 3DS’ gyroscope features in order to progress. It’s also used to solve really clever puzzles throughout as well. The gyroscopic features also play a big part of some of the final areas in novel ways, too. In general, the 3DS gyroscope is a big feature of the game that is very impressive.

While the story mode is the main attraction, Triple Deluxe features a multitude of other modes to complement it. Dedede’s Drum Dash wasn’t my thing, but if people enjoy rhythm-based games, carrying Dedede through rhythm stages based on Kirby songs would probably rock their world. Kirby Fighters is fun to play, but relatively easy to beat quickly in the single-player mode. Unless you have friends around locally, Kirby Fighters is a short mode. The multiplayer aspect is fun, as it pits players against friends to duke it out with various Kirby abilities, but I wouldn’t say it’s something to play heavily. Once the game is beaten, players run through a boss rush as well an secret extra mode, but the modes beyond the main story aren’t particularly engaging.

2.png

That doesn’t mean there’s not a whole lot to do once completing story mode, however. There are tons of keychains to collect throughout the game. The most common will appear as silver question marks throughout the game, but rarer ones can also be found that are gold. These keychains mostly comprise of Kirby abilities, bosses and other characters of interest throughout the Kirby series. They’re fun to collect and discover, adding replay value to story mode. Sun Stones are also equally important. Each level contains them in varying amounts, ranging from one one to four. The game requires you to collect them throughout the game not as simply just another thing to collect and do, but rather to progress. It is very annoying to backtrack and scour through a stage in order to find a obscurely hidden stone in order to continue the game.

There are annoyances here and there, but Kirby: Triple Deluxe is still a strong entry in the Kirby franchise. It instantly feels familiar, but adds to the Kirby formula by adding a number of unique and interesting scenarios, through both abilities as well as the 3DS hardware. The learning curve is easy enough for any novice to pick up, and the charm and colorful graphics are easy on the eyes. It’s a wonderful platformer that is easy to recommend for anyone looking for a fun time on the 3DS.

TalkBack / Mode Mania: Looking at the Modes of Kirby: Triple Deluxe
« on: April 25, 2014, 06:26:32 PM »

From drum dashing to fighting, Kirby: Triple Deluxe has a bevy of fun modes to choose from.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/37263/mode-mania-looking-at-the-modes-of-kirby-triple-deluxe

I’ve been playing Kirby: Triple Deluxe for the last week, and I must say it’s been an interesting experience. I haven’t played a Kirby game extensively since Kirby SuperStar on the SNES, so it’s been a while. There were a number of new items and features throughout the latest game in the series, but when it all comes down to the nitty-gritty players will find that Kirby: Triple Deluxe is familiar territory. So even if this is your first Kirby title in a while, or ever, you should have no problem getting into the gameplay mechanics or the setting. For this preview, I’ll look at the several modes you’ll encounter throughout gameplay.

Story Mode is the centerpiece of the game. Kirby finds himself in a conundrum one night when a giant beanstalk swoops down from the sky and manages to lift him and his house high into the sky. It’s not known exactly who or what is behind the magical beanstalk, but Kirby soon finds reason to investigate further when he sees King DeDeDe’s castle nearby. Once he enters, he discovers an unknown fiend entering the castle and nabbing King DeDeDe rather easily. The fiend grabs DeDeDe and ventures up further into the beanstalk, with Kirby following in hot pursuit.

>Kirby Fighters is also available upon starting the game. In this mode, you’ll be able to choose a selection of abilities for Kirby to use. Once you choose one, you duke it out in a series of battles against other abilities, such as Fighter, Sword, Ninja, and Hammer to name a few. Players are able to duke it out againstcomputer opponents, eventually beating all abilities and recording your own time. It’s also possible to battle via local multiplayer, and there’s even a training mode that will let you warm up.

DeDeDe’s Drum Dash is another game available from the start. This is different than the other modes in the game as it’s more rhythm based and doesn’t have much to do with the story. It’s just a fun little side game to play. As the title might lead you to believe, you’ll be playing as King DeDeDe. Players have him jumping along drums to familiar Kirby tunes throughout the series, such as the Gourmet Race and Green Greens. Pressing A at the right time will lead you to bounce high on the drums, allowing Dedede to collect coins in the sky. There are also enemies in the way tryingto thwart players from obtaining a high score, so be weary of that.

There are also two other modes available once players complete story mode. I won’t get into these two extensively, but I’ll touch upon them briefly. The Arena has players battling the end bosses of each stage as well as the mini bosses Kirby encounters throughout various other stages in the game. You’ll be timed in this mode as well, so managing health and ability throughout is essential. There is also another mode that I won’t name, but it is another time attack-esque mode, this time playing throughout the main course again. There’s an extra twist, but you’ll have to play it in order to figure out what it is!

The different modes in Kirby: Triple Deluxe offer a wide variety of things to do and accomplish. You can battle your friends in Kirby Fighters, beat it out in DeDeDe’s Drum Dash, or go through story mode and unravel the mystery that Kirby’s been entangled in. Kirby: Triple Deluxe is out May 2, and I will have a review before then so make sure to check it out for further analysis!

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - April 24, 2014

Remixes, Yoshi, veterinarians and much more this week!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37259/nintendo-downloads-april-24-2014

Lots out this week across a multitude of Nintendo systems. Wii U sees NES Remix 2 and Super Mario Advance 3. Nintendo 3DS doesn't have similar AAA titles on offer, but there might be something up your alley. We even see a Nintendo DSiWare release this week as well! I know, it's crazy. Let's take a look!

Wii U Downloads

NES Remix 2

The cavalcade of NES classics are back to test your skills. You might have been the man (or woman) back in 1986 when you last played Kid Icarus, but are you up to the task now? Many NES classics are represented here and as far as I can tell, it looks like a blast. This is out April 25, so be aware of that.

Ava and Avior Save the Earth

This game seems to be based on teaching young children about the importance of recycling. Good message to send out to the kids as that is indeed something we should all take part in. However, I've seen a trailer and...erm, it's educational. It did indeed teach me a lot of things.

Wii U Virtual Console

Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Just when you think you're all Yoshi'd out, he sucks you right back in! This, of course, is a port of the SNES original, which was a blast to play. Remember, if you touch fuzzy, you get dizzy. At least, that's what the game says. I have my own theories.

Nintendo 3DS Downloads

Mystery Case Files: Return to Ravenhearst

Seems like there's a mystery in this game. And this game will return you to Ravenhearst, which seems to be somewhere players have been, perhaps in this previous game. I don't know much about this game, so indeed it's a mysterious title.

Me and My Furry Patients 3D

In this game, it appears you'll be playing as a vet on a farm that tends to sick animals. Make sure you don't freak them out when giving them a shot, especially if you're tending to horses or something. If you think they're sick, just wait until you get bucked in the ribcage.

Nintendo DSiWare

Sea Battle

Yes, there's actually a new Nintendo DS game out today. Astonishing, isn't it? This game looks kind of like Battleship, except it isn't. Good thing this came out years after everyone moved on to a 3DS or else people would notice! I'm sure there's something here for people who are still clinging on to their DSi's, however.

Sales

Games by developer Joindots are on sale until May 8 at 9 a.m PT. List of games in the press release were:

Funfair Party Games

Gardenscapes

Secret Agent Files: Miami

3D MahJongg

Demo

Mario Golf: World Tour

TalkBack / Another World: 20th Anniversary Rated by USK
« on: April 24, 2014, 09:01:19 PM »

The classic cinematic platformer is possibly heading to both the 3DS and Wii U.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37233/another-world-20th-anniversary-rated-by-usk

Another World: 20th Anniversary seems to be making its way to the Wii U and 3DS sometime soon.

The game has been rated by the German ratings system USK, but beyond that there hasn't been much confirmation. Currently, the USK rating has since been removed, but NeoGAF has provided a screencap of the ratings.

The game has players controlling a young physicist by the name of Lester who somehow gets sucked into a foreign alien world.  Without any clue as to how he got there, he must survive the alien planet and figure out a way home.

Ports of the original 1991 version have been released for the Super Nintendo as well as the Game Boy Advance. More news on this as it develops.

TalkBack / New Fatal Frame Game Coming to Wii U
« on: April 22, 2014, 03:35:52 PM »

Smile for the camera sometime soon (at least in Japan)!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37214/new-fatal-frame-game-coming-to-wii-u

A new Fatal Frame game is coming to Wii U in Japan from Nintendo and Tecmo Koei.

Like most of the recent entries in the series, Nintendo will publish and Temco Koei will develop. The series will also branch out into several other types of media, including a live-action movie and a original novel due later this year in Japan.

There is no word on a specific title or a release date for the upcoming game. Additionally, there is no assurance this new Fatal Frame game will even make it out of Japan.

The last Fatal Frame game to come out in North America was the spin-off Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir on 3DS in 2012. Project Zero 2, a Wii remake of the second game in the series, also came out in 2012, but only in Japan and Europe. The last original game in the series only came out in Japan in 2008.

a 9 out of 10 is low? i don't think so, dawg.

maybe in retrospect a 9.5 wouldn't have been so bad, but what is done is done. based on my own tastes and thoughts I determined that was the proper score to give. That's what reviewing a game is all about!

the graphical glitches didn't play a part in the scoring, btw. It didn't have an effect on my experience one bit but it is noticeable so I had to put it there.

TalkBack / Super Mario Bros. 3 Review
« on: April 21, 2014, 03:26:20 PM »

After all these years, SMB3 still stands out as a classic.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/37211/super-mario-bros-3-review

For what seemed like ages, Nintendo promised that Super Mario Bros. 3 was coming to the Virtual Console. Months passed, and as the anticipation grew Nintendo was quiet concerning a release. It seemed like it would never see the light of day on modern consoles, but we’re finally here! Super Mario Bros. 3 is now on the Wii U Virtual Console. So now the question remains: is SMB3 one of the best games of all time? Interesting question to say the least, but I can say this: Super Mario Bros. 3 is a classic game that stands the test of time.

The game is split up in eight different worlds. You’ll travel through sand, sea, air, ice and lava in order to reach the Princess and encounter a myriad of challenges along the way. The level design in the game has drastically improved over the previous two Super Mario Bros. games.

The variety presented throughout is staggering compared to the previous two games. As far as graphics go, well, they’re dated, but they’re simple and have a consistent aesthetic. I did notice some weird graphical glitches throughout gameplay in the Wii U version of the game (not sure if this was in the original version or not), but it was hardly an issue regardless.

Super Mario Bros. 3 is a blast. Everything I remembered about the original has remained true decades later. The music, the worlds, and the gameplay remain something that Nintendo should be proud of to this day. Super Mario Bros. 3 was the pinnacle of the NES era, and it’s well worth the price of admission.

TalkBack / Ubisoft Partners with Cirque du Soleil for Child of Light
« on: April 19, 2014, 02:15:48 AM »

Canadian songwriter Cœur de Pirate ties it all together with an enchanting score.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37188/ubisoft-partners-with-cirque-du-soleil-for-child-of-light

Ubisoft has partnered with Cirque du Soleil for the upcoming release, Child of Light.

Ubisoft released a behind-the-scenes video detailing their partnership with Cirque du Soleil, as well as songwriter Cœur de Pirate. Their aim is to develop the game "into a well-rounded work of art". Creative director Patrick Plourde turned to the world famous entertainment company to give the game a "sense of theatricality" and to bring a non-game design perspective to the artistic and stage direction of the title.

The game is scheduled for release later this month on April 30 for $14.99.

Yes, Super Mario Bros. 3 is finally out!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37182/nintendo-downloads-april-17-2014

This week's focus seems to be squarely on Virtual Console releases. After months of being mum on the subject, April seems to be the month that a bunch of major games are making their Wii U and Nintendo 3DS debuts. For example, there's a little art house title called Super Mario Bros. 3 making it's solemn, low key debut this week. There's also a batch of new Game Boy Advance games coming out today as well. Check out the titles below!

Nintendo 3DS eShop

Bit Boy!! Arcade

Boy, this game must be embarrassed that it's the only non-Virtual Console game coming out this week for the 3DS. Well, it probably would be if video games were sentient beings. I'm pretty sure that they aren't. Or are they...

Smash Cat Heroes

Everyone loves cats nowadays! But does everyone love cat video games? I don't really know. I'm not really sure what this game entails, but the cat loving demographic on the internet is sure to give it a try.

Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console

Super Mario Bros. 3

Yes, Super Mario 3 is finally arriving on the Virtual Console. My favorite part of the game? Kuribo's Shoe. There's nothing cooler than to hopping in a giant green shoe and stomping on spinys like there's no tomorrow. .

Wii U Downloads

My First Songs

The killer app for the two to five demographic is finally out! My First Songs will have some of the classics we all belted out as kids, including Old McDonald and a bunch of others.

Flowerworks HD: Follie's Adventure

Finally, Follie's going to get an adventure in HD. For too long now we've had to settle for standard definition, but no more! Glorious, eye-blistering HD.

Wii U Virtual Console

F-Zero: Maximum Velocity

I'll admit that I'm not the biggest F-Zero fan. I don't know why, just never got into the series. The game maintains a diehard fanbase throughout all its hardships, so I'm sure plenty of people are excited to scoop up this GBA title.

Golden Sun

One of the best RPGs to release on the system, Golden Sun was a pretty exciting package. All the fun of a full length RPG, without all the messy cords and consoles lying around. What a treat!

Super Mario Bros. 3

Another fun Mario item in this game, by the way? The Hammer Bros. suit! I think it's more because of the rarity of it in the game more than anything, though. Be sure to pick up both versions so you can play one with your feet. Twice the Mario, twice the fun!

Kirby, boxes, star children and Wario make way to your systems this week!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/37136/nintendo-downloads-april-10-2014

This week on the eShop we see more Game Boy Advance titles arriving in the Kirby and WarioWare series. We also see some activity on the 3DS Virtual Console as Mach Rider glides on in. Boxes, poker and star children also make their appearances this week on the eShop, so let's take a look see!

Wii U eShop

Exotic Farm

What is so exotic about Exotic Farm? You can raise hippos and ostriches, which are indeed animals you wouldn't think would end up in your atypical farm setting. I'm not sure what either does in order to contribute to your farms economy, but I don't think this is an issue in this Wii U game. Or maybe it does, I'm not sure!

Wii U Virtual Console

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror

I haven't played this Kirby game extensively, to be honest. They've always been fun, lighthearted romps so I guess it can be an easy recommendation. Also seems like they're quickly releasing the Ambassador titles to the Wii U. Not a bad thing, as most of them are fun, but it is starting to get noticeable.

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Mircrogame$!

This was one weird game back in the day.  I played this a bit and enjoyed it, so I recommend this one. It's sort of like a mash of surrealistic humor mixed with nostalgia and general weirdness. Then again, that describes Wario's personality and characteristics to a tee so are we really surprised?

Nintendo 3DS eShop

Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars

This game involves something called "star children", and just by that fact as well as looking at the game's title you know this is a JRPG from the get go. Those don't come over here too often like they used to, so it's nice to see something like this released once in a while. Let the eccentricities begin!

Atlantic Quest

Upon first glance, this looks like Atlantis Quest. That sounds fun, I've always wanted to find the lost underwater city of Atlantis! But alas, reading comprehension got the best of me and it's Atlantic Quest, which is not about the lost city of Atlantis. Still looks fun from the screens, but one can only hope...

Boxzle

Looks like in this game the goal is to solve rubix cube-like puzzles that eventually award you with a nice picture with clever use of the 3DS hardware.

Governor of Poker

I've always wanted to be the governor of Poker. Not just a causal player, no. The boss. The big time. I want to control the poker empire. First thing on the agenda? Changing the rules so I know how to play.

Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console

Mach Rider

This game was a little before my time. Now, considering I've played a bunch of video games before my time, Mach Rider seems to be one of the few I haven't tried. Racing games have never been my thing, and Mach Rider seems to be a racing game from 1985, so there you go. I'm sure there's a few out there who enjoy the game, but it doesn't seem to be for me.

Sales

Ducktales: Remastered

is 50% off on the Wii U eShop as we speak! The deal ends on April 17 at 9 am so nab it while you can.

Escape from Zombie City is also 50% off on the Nintendo 3DS eShop. This sale begins on April 12 at 9 am and runs through April 27.

G-Style Co. is having a sale on select games. Check this out on the Nintendo 3DS eShop on April 12 to see what tickles your fancy.

My Farm will have its price cut from $7.99 to $4.99 starting today.
