Assuming it's not impossibly hard, I'll definitely buy this game.  I'm all about the weird games.  That and the alcohol abuse.

TalkBack / RE:Activision Announces Spider-Man 3

I wonder why they're even bothering to make sequels to the Hulk or the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?  I don't know that either one did that well...but maybe I'm mistaken!  Of course, with the Hulk, it didn't matter that the movie pooched, because they sold a zillion dollars of Hulk merchandise.   Kind of sick!

Anyway, this just seems to be a "we still have the liscence" press release.  The kind of thing that's meant for investors rather than gamers.  Tell me when the game ISN'T three years away!

Why not?

Best Graphics
1. Zelda - I'm not yet sure if it will beat Resident Evil technically, but I like the style better.
2. Paper Mario 2 - I've always loved Paper Mario's style, and it's looking so much better with this game.  I hope they sharpen up some of the environments.
3. Resident Evil 4 - Quite likely the best graphics on the system, but the whole horror theme just doesn't appeal to me.

Biggest Surprise
1. Zelda - of course.
2. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat - looks really cool to me, hopefully the concept works out.
3. Reggie - he is our hero!

Biggest Disappointment
1. Lack of new 3rd party games, exclusive or not.  Gamespot has a big list of E3 games, and it's hard to see the GameCube anywhere in there until you get to the first party titles.
2. Reggie.  I love him and hate him all at once.
3. Squre Enix...I'd love to see some more of their games on the Cube.

Best Audio
I can't really judge from watching one press conference - most of the music probably wasn't even in-game.  The tunes in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong and Paper Mario 2 trailers I saw were cool.

Most anticipated games
1. Paper Mario 2.
2. Zelda
3. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

Honorable Mentions for other consoles:
Xbox: Halo 2, Fable, Conker's Bad Fur Day

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Gamecube+Squareenix+E3

Square Enix may only have just started development on its second GameCube game, and Nintendo probably wants something either to fill in the gaps in 2005 (GameCube's last big year), or to help launch Revolution.  Either way, it was probably just too early to show it.  I imagine we'll see something next E3.
I am pretty confident that they're working on another console game for Nintendo though, Crystal Chronicles seemed to do well and I'm sure Nintendo is trying build a relationship between the two companies.

I think it looks cool, I'll definitely try it when it's done.

General Gaming / RE: Microsoft attempting GT4 killer

I think it's a cheesy marketing tactic to get people who are interested in the "killed" game to check out the "killer".  In my opinion, Project Gotham 2 is Xbox's GT4 killer, if anything is.

3D controls without analog is definitely a concern, I'm actually surprised Nintendo didn't address it, because I always felt the lack of analog control was a considerable drawback for a lot of Playstation games.  Hopefully Nintendo will either reconsider or  at least put a lot of effort into making the games work well with digital control.

General Gaming / RE: E3 Thoughts
« on: May 13, 2004, 05:30:01 AM »
Lots of Reggie fans here, I see.

I'm actually very impressed.  I think Nintendo did a much better job of surprising me than last year.  I remember last year I felt like I had already seen everything by the time Nintendo's press conference was over.  All that was left was to hear impressions of Mario Kart and see a bit more of Metal Gear.  This year there were several unexpected games for the existing systems plus all the new games for the DS.  I'm still itching for more information on several games, especially Paper Mario 2.

I'm constantly surprised at how much people hate Super Mario Sunshine, even Super Mario 64 fans.  I thought it was a very respectable sequel to Super Mario 64.  Not perfect, but respectable.

« on: May 13, 2004, 05:12:54 AM »
I think it's definitely coming to the next system, Nintendo already hinted that there would be no more Mario games for the GameCube, and with Revolution or GCnext or N5 or whatever you want to call it about two years away, now is the time for Nintendo's developers to be thinking about the launch games.

Busy Child?  As in Busy Child by the Crystal Method?  How the heck are you supposed to drum to that?  I like the song, but I just can't imagine it...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: My prediction - SK is making Zelda
« on: May 12, 2004, 07:52:12 AM »
Maybe...but I don't really believe it.  I don't see Nintendo, a relatively serious company, creating a hoax about something so serious.  I would say in a best-case scenario, this is the last collaboration between the two companies and Nintendo decided to announce the split before showing the game so people would think Silicon Knights is still on our side, even if it is third-party.  I think even that is stretching, but it's a fun prediction.

I'm very interested to see what they do with this game.  I hope it's more than a four-player remake.  The character models are looking pretty nice though!  Practically as good as they do in Mario Kart: Double Dash...which is either really insulting to that game or really impressive for this game.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The inevitable DS vs PSP debate.
« on: May 12, 2004, 07:43:04 AM »
I think the PSP will take some of Nintendo's market (and create a considerable new market)  for two reasons:

1.  It has better graphics.  They may or may not be suitable for on-the-go gameplay, but the point is, casual gamers won't care, they'll just see pretty pictures and buy it.

2. Sony is cooler and more mature than Nintendo - or at least that's the perception of the general public.  I think a lot of people who never even thought about owning a Gameboy will buy this system because it's not from Nintendo and most of the big titles are franchises that are already popular with older players.

Having said that, I'm more impressed than ever with DS.  It definitely looks to have some killer aps, and I do think it will be a better handheld system than the PSP - more durable, efficient, and so on.  It's also really unique!  Depending on pricing, I think the DS is going to hold PSP off nicely while Nintendo preps the next "real" Gameboy, but I think Sony is going to create a new handheld market among older, casual gamers and it will probably stay in the handheld game for more than one generation.

They showed a bit of this at the press conference today, but it seems to be getting shoved to the backburner by all the big-name franchises.  I hope Nintendo gives Geist a proper marketing push.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:REALISTIC ZELDA TRAILER!!!
« on: May 11, 2004, 10:28:53 AM »
Damn these multiple posts!!  Anyway, looks very good.  I'm really glad Nintendo held back a couple of secrets this year, I feel that was what was lacking in last year's E3 - no real surprises.  I'm very interested in hearing more about this game and DK Jungle Beat too.

Looks pretty cool...I defended cel shading from here to the apocalypse, and I still do, but I'm always up for a change.  And this will certainly sell Cubes to "mature" gamers.  I just hope it doesn't go over the top.  I'll check it out even if it does, but I'd prefer a game along the same lines as the N64 Zeldas.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo DS Attracts Worldwide Developers

"Once more, Nintendo leads the way with something unexpected and totally innovative."
and...
"It's very innovative, which is classic Nintendo."

Ha ha!  Press Releases really need something that is the opposite of lip-service.  Like when a company removes support for the GameCube, they should say, "As usual, Nintendo's systems are unprofitable and a convenient scapegoat for our financial problems!"

Anyway, I'm still very happy to see all this support.  Go DS go!

This thread is a little old, so perhaps I should ignore it, yet, I can't....

I've been following Rare on Xbox.  Kameo and Conker are supposed to be out this year, and MS has even released new artwork for each recently.  I think they'll make it on time, however, Rare seems to be having trouble on Xbox.  They aren't as fast as MS would like, and Rare's games don't really fit in the Xbox mould.  Ironically, that's why Microsoft acquired Rare in the first place, to expand it's territory, but it doesn't seem to be working.

As for Sabre Wulf, I think it looks really good.  I don't know, people seem to have gone against the DKC "pre-rendered" style of graphics in recent years, but I still think DKC looks beautiful, and this game looks beautiful too...to me.  Early reviews of the game from Europe are quite positive.  I think the biggest compliment from the reviews is that the game is NOT like all the other GBA platformers out there.  I'll probably buy it.

4194
I will definitely miss sprites...if by sprites you mean 2D characters.  I'm so looking forward to Paper Mario 2, though some might not count the characters in that game as "sprites" per se.  Anyway, I think the characters look beautiful, it's like they were ripped straight out of the Super Mario Bros. 3 instruction book.  And the same goes for a ton of the games on the GBA.  I'm playing Wade Hixton's Counterpunch right now, the characters look amazing.

As for the gameplay, I'm not in the right thread here.  I love 3D.   That's not to say that I think 2D is dumb or should be done away with, I agree that it will be a shame if it ever dies completely, but I love 3D games too.  Hopefully both styles of gameplay can live on for decades to come.  I'm optimistic!  Viewtiful Joe was a huge hit last year, and I have a feeling that if VJ2 is as successful, we'll start seeing a 2D revival.

Meanwhile, show your support by buying 2D games on your 3D consoles!  That will send a message to those suits in Capital City!

Ian: True enough!  I'm still not a fan of holding it against a game that a certain feature doesn't exist.  Then again, if the game didn't have four player, I would be as annoyed as anyone... I guess part of the problem is that I'm not such a rabid online fan.  I have had Double Dash ready to go online for months, but I haven't actually done it.  I just don't have the time or motivation.  Tsk on me!

I think BK (holy hades, I can't spell it, so it winds up as Burger King) will do okay no matter what...it's interesting that everyone here is worried for it because it's going to have a holiday release!  I wish more game publishers would think like that.  A lot of games that fell in the good to outstanding range failed last Christmas, and I think some of them would have done a lot better if they hadn't been forced to compete with all the other major holiday titles.

General Gaming / RE: Sega Dreamcast 2????????????
« on: May 06, 2004, 07:37:55 AM »
It would be cool, but I don't think it's in Sega's best interests right now.  What I DO think is in Sega's best interests would be focusing it's efforts more towards one console (preferably GameCube ).  I think the multi-console approach the company has taken has split up it's fanbase and is making it harder for their more obscure games to make a big profit.  If I'm a Sega fan I can have Skies of Arcadia on the GameCube, Jet Set Radio on the Xbox, or Vectorman on the PS2, but there's nowhere where I can buy all three.

General Gaming / RE: HALO & HALO II Discussion
« on: May 06, 2004, 07:33:02 AM »
I thought Halo was a lot of fun as a co-op game, but I would have lost interest pretty quickly if I'd played it on my own.  I do understand why people like it so much:  The impressive AI on NPCs, the tweaks to traditional FPS gameplay, the relatively cool plot, and the all-around high quality of the game.  Having said that, I agree that the levels were way too repititious (not to mention oversized with no save points) and I thought some of the vehicle controls were unecessarily "original".  When it was good it was awesome, and when it was bad it was dreadfully boring.
I think the game would have been significantly better if they had actually made it shorter, condensing it to the best parts.
Actually, I've been thinking about a lot of games lately.  Hopefully they're fixing this with Halo II.  It does look good, and I'll probably play it just like the first, but Halo II probably won't be the game that makes me buy an XBox.

General Gaming / N64 games have become as cheap as dirt!
« on: May 06, 2004, 07:23:54 AM »
I've been interested in adding some choice games to my N64 collection ever since the GameCube came out, but the prices on the games remained pretty high for the first couple of years.  But I was looking at Ebay today, and wowee-wow-wow-wow!  You can even get games that were once collector's items quite cheap now...Ogre Battle 64 seems to be going for about 30 dollars, and everything else, including games like Goldeneye, seems to be in the 5-10 dollar range.  It makes Super Nintendo games look expensive!  I think I'll be finishing off my N64 collection soon.

Ha ha, I sound like an ad for Nintendo!  Except they don't stand to make any profit on used games.

4200
I basically agree with Mouse_Clicker, but I'm slightly more agressive about going online: I think online profitability is on it's way, and I think Nintendo would be wise to jump on the bandwagon very early in the "GCNext's" lifecycle, even if it's not immediately profitable.  Otherwise I feel Nintendo risks looking like the "offline" game company.
Speaking of online games, I've noticed that a lot of the videogame media (particularly IGN) have a real hang-up about it.  It's gotten to the point where Nintendo's games are getting penalized by the media for not being online and I think it's silly.  Would a full-blown online mode be nice for Mario Kart?  Yes.  Is the game bad without it?  No!
