I like DOA's art style, for more than the boobs.  But I have to admit, it probably has the least coherent artistic style of the major fighting games out there, unless you count breasts as a style.

I don't care if 360 is only higher-res versions of current games, I enjoy current games.  No doubt, new game experiences are the reason why Revolution will be more interesting than Xbox 360, but I'm still excited to see the shiny new graphics 360 has to offer.  I think a few of the games like Kameo are starting to look really great.

It's true Nintendo would probably not offer so many downloads, in fact it's even more likely that Nintendo won't offer any free downloads at all...but it should.  It would be a great way to introduce people to the download "store", and it costs Nintendo next to nothing.  I'd still like to be able to choose the download...I think Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt is a good choice if you're going to force people to pick a certain download, but the game is so common a lot of people might consider it worthless.  I would.

I miss pack-in games too, and I'd love to have one, but Nintendo knows that most of the early adopters are huge fanatics that will happily buy a game separately anyway, so we're screwed.  The only way to get deals like that is to wait until they are desperate to boost sales.  Still, if I could get a Rev with Mario 128 packed-in, I'd be a very happy camper.

I still think a pack-in demo is a hugely great idea, as well as a free download.

Edit: Going back to the topic of limited edition colours for a second, I might be the only person who wants it, but I would gladly pay an extra $50 or maybe even $100 for a limited edition chrome Revolution if such a thing was made.  Sweet chrome...so shiny.

I'm surprised that he'd be able to talk with you so candidly about the cpu, although if he's in a different department it's possible that he's gleaned some information from the department that's working on it and doesn't feel obligated to keep his mouth shut since it's not his project.  The idea that the cpu is modified from the Cube seems to be in line with a lot of the stuff we've heard from Nintendo.

That track that everyone is talking about can be a lot of fun, but it's so different from any other Mario Kart track I can see why some people don't like it.  Professional's way of playing sounds fun.

So from what you're saying, "story" mode is done entirely with player-made characters?  I like the crazy characters in SSX, so I'm not sure I like that.  I'm still pretty interested in this one because of the flagrant use of Mario.

One of the staff members did an interesting article on Jack; he put a lot of effort into it, you can learn all about the guy's past.

trip1eX, I totally disagree.  If I'm a consumer that doesn't know computers well, having a product right next to the DS on the shelf that says, "Nintendo Wireless Internet Game Adapter" makes things incredibly simple and obvious for me.  Nintendo needs to make things incredibly simple and obvious for consumers, 'cuz they're not as motivated or geeky as us.  If it's too hard, people won't bother playing the games online.

Heck, even I think that Nintendo's solution sounds simpler...I'm probably wrong because I've never tried to install a wireless router, but simply plugging in a USB stick and installing some software sounds very easy.

No online battle mode stinks, but I can't really complain when Nintendo is finally going online and doing it for free.  If this was a second or third-generation online game for them, then I'd be ticked off.

The point is, you don't say, "Four free pixelated 80s games".  You say, "Four free game downlaods." or if you want to go for the nostalgia angle, "Four free Nintendo classics".

Heck they could put a five-second spot at the end of each game commercial.  Then you never mention the classics without mentioning a new game, and the classics get a lot of air time.  I think they have the potential to be a huge selling point if Nintendo doesn't make them too expensive.

I really like the idea of an exclusive launch colour, too.  I at least hope they offer some exciting colour at launch, I find white and black both boring, but I guess I should buy those boring colours because at this point the colours they've showed that I like the most are red and green, both of which totally clash with my purple GameCube.

Ha ha ha, the power pad story reminds me of this sign I saw in a zoo in Germany.  It said "Warning, the bears play with toys" and had a picture of a polar bear hitting a guy square in the head with a pylon.  Sadly, the photo my girlfriend took was lost from a corrupt SD card.  No, the bears didn't hit me in the head with any pylons, but I wonder if it's ever happened?

I could believe that there are 30 unannounced games for the Cube in total, but not 30 "high profile" ones.  I'd be pretty happy if there are 30 unnanounced games left, that would put the GameCube way ahead of the N64 and maybe even a little bit ahead of the Super NES in its final year.

In all seriousness, Jack didn't issue his ridiculous challenge to some smartass who took five minutes to throw together a sarcastic text adventure with only one choice, one of the options of which was to kill Jack Thompson.  I think the way the gaming community is dealing with this is only slightly more mature than Thompson himself (although it is awfully nice of Penny Arcade to donate $10,000 to charity).

Of course, Thompson is still a jerkass.

My guess is he means multiple colours...there's nothing really complicated about that, everyone knows how to choose their favourite colour and it doesn't cost extra to choose blue instead of red.  What's complicated is making people choose things that add extra features and extra cost like hard drives or alternative controllers (I agree with Ian that the traditional controller shell should be included with the system).

They also talk about taking breaks in all of the instruction manuals nowdays, I think Perrin was just covering Nintendo's butt with that comment.  It's the alternative to saying, "But don't sue us because you play games for hours on end and ignore all the obvious warning signs from your body."  Personally I'm totally confident that the controller will be comfortable for long play times, although I think the button layout may turn out to be an issue... I'm unsure about the vertical alignment of the buttons and the d-pad on the remote.  I think that will be more awkward than uncomfortable, though.

Edit: I saw Doshin while I was in Germany and I soooo wanted to buy it, but I don't know if there's a way to play PAL games on NTSC TVs.  I don't think the surprises will be anything to spectacular, either, I especially don't think they'll bother porting any older titles except maybe Puzzle Collection at this point in time, but it's still nice to know that there are more games than they've announced.

General Gaming / RE: Microsoft aiming to be home to Indie Games?
« on: October 18, 2005, 06:30:13 AM »
I didn't know that about Sony.  Again, it's still less surprising than Nintendo allowing/helping homebrew game devs.  The company is very serious about having control of the content on its systems.  Also, allowing homebrew gaming brings up question, what's to stop a small dev like Orbital Media or WayForward from releasing "homebrew" games instead of fully liscenced ones, thus circumventing Nintendo's liscensing fees?

3168
Nintendo has had plenty of good press in the past...in particular, if I remember right, Steven Kent gave some of the first GameCube impressions in Time and was very favourable.  Seems like Time is good to Nintendo.  I'm glad to hear this because for months it's been nothing but 360 and PS3 and I was worried Nintendo might not be able to break into the mainstream media with Rev.

I'd sell the system normally to start, but I totally agree with including a demo disk.  Edit: A demo disk is even more important for this system than for a traditional one because it gives Nintendo the chance to show people the full range of new ideas made possible by the new interface. I'd also seriously consider a game bundle package in first half of 2007.  That seemed to work very well for Microsoft in the early days of the Xbox's life.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Donkey Kong instead of Mario?
« on: October 17, 2005, 12:59:31 PM »
I'd love to see a Mario and Luigi cooperative platformer...

Whatever it is, it needs to make use of the controller.  I think Jungle Beat could be a great killer app, it just needs about twice as many levels to appease critics.  Maybe it could use a dual-remote drumming setup, although that would mean Nintendo needs to include the second controller with the game or the system.  For that matter Nintendo could probably think up some more creative way of using the remote to play the game, while still making it physical like Jungle Beat was.

I think a new Mario platformer could do just fine too, though.  While there have been hints that Nintendo is having trouble finding a direction for Mario 128, it's pretty late in the game to be starting up a brand-new title to act as the "killer app".  Ideally the real killer app is already well into development.

General Gaming / RE: Developers abandoning PS3 development?
« on: October 17, 2005, 12:29:05 PM »
Eh, I'll believe it when I see it.  Some small developers may be put off of the PS3, but they won't be of too much consequence, is my guess.  I remember these same types of arguments going on about the PS2 way back when.  However, I realize development costs have been a big topic in the development community lately, so maybe it will have a bigger effect than I think.

This game looks really good, I'd definitely be checking it out if I had a PS2.  I love the idea of fighting gigantic bosses, one of my favourite moments in Super Mario 64 was when I learned I could actually climb on top of the Whomp boss at the top of the tower level.

I didn't really expect this, but in hindsight I should have...I don't think Nintendo is really that open to indie gaming, even though many of us would like them to be.  Microsoft, on the other hand, has been working with the open-ended PC format for years, so it's not surprising that the company welcomes indie game developers.

Too bad.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Mario Baseball

I enjoy the Mario sports games, but not enough to buy many of them...and this one gets knocked down to the bottom of my list mainly because I suck at playing real-life baseball so I never took to the sport.  Something about hitting a moving, smallish ball with a stick taxes my already shakey physical coordination past its limits.

TalkBack / RE:Revolution in
« on: October 17, 2005, 08:54:46 AM »
I agree with Ian on DS, it sold very well in spite of the odds, and that is what Nintendo would most likely notice.  Having said that, I don't think Nintendo is ignorant of the fact that it has more power in the handheld market than in the home console market.  I think that's exactly why Nintendo launched DS so early, it knew it could get away with it and get a head-start on Sony.

With the Rev, that kind of strategy would be a very bad idea, so I agree that Nintendo should aim for quality rather than an early launch, but of course both would be better.  Revolution will need a rock-solid game that proves the new concept, like Super Mario 64 did for the N64.  Revolution needs needs to hit people with it's full potential right from day one.  The DS failed at this (at least for me) because it didn't have a game of Super Mario 64s calibre to impress me.  I bought the system with Wario Ware and Feel the Magic which are both good games and both made full use of the features, but they didn't provide a "complete" experience - you could play them and still not know if the touch screen was good for anything more than mini-games.  Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt was encouraging in this respect, but it was still just a short demo.

So yeah, it would be better to have a great launch lineup in November than to launch in April with crud, but I hope Nintendo is putting an effort in to do better than November, and I feel that it should have been ready to launch sooner in the first place.
