Nintendo Gaming / RE: Zelda DS: Phantom Hourglass
« on: July 13, 2007, 06:02:14 AM »
Kairron-banned?

I read the interview with Aonuma, Nintendo is taking quite the business approach to the series these days (they will wait to see how Phantom Hourglass sells outside of Japan before committing to a simplified approach for the next Wii game).   I don't think that's an entirely bad thing, it sounds like they've really captured the spirit of the series for Phantom Hourglass while making it easier for everyone to play.

Yeah, I saw the Game|Life preview.  I'm tempted to chalk it up to personal taste, but then again, she mentioned that there was no line to play the game.

I'm still awaiting further previews before making any conclusions.

bustin: I don't think it is, but it's getting close.  VGChartz puts it at over 9 million...I guess there could easily be 10 million shipped.

Yay for increased shipments!  I understand you can't just flip a switch and make an extra million units every month, but I was still starting to wonder when Nintendo was going to put some more on the market...it's totally warranted.

Not bad!  The problem does need to be addressed before doing another online MK, I'd say.

I like Wario's new Kart.  I recall complaining a lot about the designs of some of the Karts in Double Dash, and although there are still some goofy ones here, overall they look pretty cool and believable.

I didn't see any of them...even the Nintendo conference was audio-only for me.  Reggie sounded like he was reading from a teleprompter, I think it's a side-effect of not seeing his gestures.

Based on summaries, it seems like Sony had the most to show, but they really needed to win this one, in fact from what I've heard they could have done a lot better.  It seems like the days of using E3 for all the big announcements are gone.

General Gaming / RE: New PSP version announced
« on: July 12, 2007, 06:08:34 AM »
All videogame system are competing, yes even handhelds versus home consoles, although that's less of a competition than home vs. home and portable vs. portable.

This is why, when Nintendo says its not competing with Sony and Microsoft, it really means, "We're looking for a new way to take their names and kick their asses."  For all the rhetoric about how PSP and DS aren't competing, I'll always remember last year when Sony announced it was lowering PSP shipments by 3 million, and a couple of weeks later Nintendo announced it was increasing DS shipments by 3 million.

I'm not  that worried about MS anymore.  After all their talk about reaching casual gamers, they gave us what?  Viva Pinata Party and Scene-It.  As good as Microsoft is at bullying people on its PC software "home turf", Xbox and Zune both appear to be huge failures compared to the leading products, and the way things are going, Wii is set to clobber Xbox 360 as well.

Ultimately, Wii has so much momentum right now that I think only Nintendo could screw it up.  Microsoft could repackage the Core as a Wii-killer with motion control, $250 price tag and all tomorrow, and it would still have to overcome Nintendo's headstarts in brand recognition and casual software development.

General Gaming / RE: Capcom expects ANOTHER PS3 price cut this year
« on: July 12, 2007, 05:30:39 AM »
Yeah, I agree with that comment, KDR.

I guess anything is possible if Sony keeps having all this trouble.  It also depends on how you define price cut.  I wouldn't be that surprised if they phased on the 60 GB model and dropped the 80GB model to $500, minus Motorstorm, because I really doubt the 80GB model costs much more to produce (if it costs more at all).

Realistically, though, I expect the current price cut to have a strong enough positive effect this month to cool people down a bit, and then Sony will squeak by through the holiday season with "strong enough", but still relatively weak, sales.  I wouldn't be surprised to see another price cut early next year, though.

Yeah, that would be rad.

Since Bowser turns into Giga Bowser, DK should turn into KING KONG for his final Smash.  Actually...he should just start randomly chucking unstoppable barrels, that would be sweet...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: WiiFit bundle by Christmas?
« on: July 12, 2007, 05:06:37 AM »
I don't think the Wii Sports bundle will stop being popular until well into 2008...which may be a good time to start a Wii Fit bundle, I guess!
Actually, a Wii Fit bundle might be a good idea, since Reggie confirmed that the game and board together will cost more than an average Wii game.  A Wii Fit bundle for under $250 or so (Nintendo must be making mad profits on Wii at this time) might be attractive to people that don't already have a Wii.

I believe that Nintendo has unofficially admitted another Zelda game and Animal Crossing are both in the works.  Miyamoto has said that Pikmin 3 is not in the works but that he'd like to do another, I think.  I'd be all over that.

I'd like to see a new IP that isn't aimed at the non-gamer crowd.  I guess Disaster qualifies, but that's not even developed by Nintendo.  I'm actually loving Wii Sports and strongly considering Brain Age 2 and Wii Fit, but I still look forward to something new.

Does snaking actually work in the GameCube and N64 games?  I remember trying to develop a snaking technique in MK64 way back in the day and having no luck at all...but I wasn't totally dedicated to the cause, because it seemed like too much work.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Metroid Prime 3 Revolutionized
« on: July 12, 2007, 04:25:02 AM »
Well, 1up and EGM are the same place for starters.

I'm not really worried about this game, I only hear good things about the pointer control and I have no doubt that the team can make a good game otherwise.  I've heard there are a few awkward button choices for reading text and switching visors, but I can live with that.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:sigh

Matt C is a huge Metroid fanboy and proclaims that it plays better than "any console FPS ever"...I'm pretty sure it's going to score well over 9 on IGN.

That said...who cares what IGN thinks of it, or even if a game gets 9s from the majority of reviewers?  Be an independent thinker.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo E³ 07 Press Conference MegaThread
« on: July 11, 2007, 06:28:38 AM »
I thought it was a so-so show, but that's what I was expecting.

Wii Fit sounds interesting (couldn't see the video feed) and was a good conclusion...it has the potential to keep the system selling out for another year.

The brief Mario Kart announcement was nice.

Everything else was pretty much known or not that interesting.  I guess the Wii Zapper is cool....maybe there was a lot of silent game footage that I just didn't get to see, but I was hoping for more of that.

All that said, I think Nintnedo has rightfully stopped talking about games years in advance.  Focus on this year's games, tell us about Animal Crossing and whatever next year.

General Gaming / RE: Tekken Tekken Tekken
« on: July 10, 2007, 07:29:24 AM »
Yeah, the number of pre-designed combos is a bit prohibitive in Tekken, I tried 5 with a friend recently.  It's not a bad game, but I guess I'm not "hardcore" enough for fighting games anymore, because I don't have the time/patience to remember "X O Triangle Square Square X".

Still, I could totally get into the series if I had the time...

I think BigJim makes a compelling argument...and in addition to that, we need to remember that Blu-ray is just as important to Sony as video games.  I'm skeptical about its chances, but if it did take off, it would mean all kinds of money for Sony over the next decade or so until a new medium emerges.

It's funny/scary how many of the failures and victories we are seeing right now are caused by business decisions made two, three or even more years ago:

Sony: We'll use Playstation as a trojan horse for all our latest, greatest technologies!
Result: A high-priced games console that includes a bunch of features that not everyone wants.

MS: We must beat Sony no matter what!
Result: Xbox 360 hardware suffers various defects because it was rushed to market and (possibly) uses cheap parts.

Nintendo: We need to get out of this race with Sony and Microsoft.  Let's make a console for moms!
Result: Wii sells extremely well to "non-gamers", but some traditional games suffer so-so sales and third parties aren't sure what to make of it.

Ah ha ha ha, I love the choice of Peter Moore DJing for the photo on the article.  Anyway...my prediction is that MS will drop the price before the end of the year, but not until the Halo 3 launch, or possibly even later.  The game division really wants to make a profit, it seems, but I don't think they can ignore the so-so sales forever.  PS2 should not be outselling it at this point.

Looking at this line-up, one thing is clear: Square Enix needs to translate its games faster.  Seriously, this time last year I was quite excited about DQ Joker, but with Dragon Quest IX coming to DS eventually, I don't really care anymore.

I figure by the time DQ Swords actually comes out here, some "real" RPGs will have been announced and I won't be interested in buying it, either.

*Obligatory post about how I still love Rare on GBA, but I haven't had the chance to play any of the Xbox games*

That said...the more Rare screws up, the more I don't have to care that I don't own a 360.

274
OH yeah, this game is definitely going to be ported to 360, I've been sure of that since PS3 sales first started slowing down.  I think it'll still be exclusive to PS3 for a while, but the 360 version will hit by Christmas 08.

The bosses look surprisingly good. The whole package looks nice, in fact.  I was worried about the 3D elements, but it looks like they're all on-rails, which is cool.
