Nintendo Gaming / RE:Official Wii Sales Thread
« on: July 24, 2007, 04:20:08 AM »
But wait you guys Nintendo doesn't care about us gamers anymore it only makes games for casual non-gamers and Mario Kart Wii doesn't count cos they made a steering wheel for anybody to play it.  Games are all about meeeeeeeeeeeee!

General Gaming / RE: CONFIRMED: Halo 3 to be Wii-killer...
« on: July 20, 2007, 06:40:44 AM »
Ha ha.  I like Halo but I've always thought it was overrated.  There are a couple of great ideas in the series, but there are also plenty of flaws.

Umm...but on Perry's comments about beautiful graphics enticing people away from Wii...DS and PSP have already proven this guy wrong.  I don't doubt some core gamers will buy 360s and PS3s in a few years when they're a lot cheaper, but they're not necessarilly going to abandon Wii (how many times have people said they would not go back to golf games that use a regular controller?) and the new gamers simply aren't interested in what those other systems have to offer.

General Gaming / RE: Just FYI, Silicon Knights suing Epic
« on: July 20, 2007, 06:33:52 AM »
Well, ultimately, I'll wait for more info from the courts and journalists.  My instinct is to go with Silicon Knights on this, but I admit that's mainly because I like them better than Epic...which doesn't necessarilly mean they're right.

But that's a boring post, so let's put on our tinfoil hats:  Epic has recently gotten in bed with Sony, producing a timed-exclusive Unreal Tournament 3 and an exclusive Gears of War type game, all while providing Sony with a better version of the Unreal engine for the PS3.

Since Microsoft no longer has anything to gain from Epic, and it knows that Silicon Knights has had a few problems, it helps spur a legal action that will give Epic and therefore Sony headaches for months and maybe years to come.

He looks more bored or constipated to me.  But he's watching a demo of a 360 game anyway.

Personally I love RRR, I just think it needed a little extra time to be truly great.

Everyone knows that Nintendo has won Japan.  The only people who haven't accepted it are Sony/MS fanboys and naysayer Nintendo fans.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Manhunt 2 from Rockstar? Whoa...
« on: July 20, 2007, 06:07:31 AM »
That Take Two is spending time doing something to the game between now and October tells me that we will not be seeing an AO Manhunt 2 on Wii.  Maybe PC, who knows?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Factor 5 Rumblings
« on: July 20, 2007, 06:04:33 AM »
SK didn't seem to be particularly harsh on Nintendo.  To my recollection it was something along the lines of: we believe the future of gaming is in better stories and worlds and we need the power to express that.  Nintendo's going in a different direction.

I can understand that too.  Nintendo is still doing the epics, but cinematic experiences have never been Nintendo's focus.  Hell, Nintendo still avoids voice acting and fully orchestrated soundtracks, stuff that became standard on PSone.  I personally prefer Nintendo's approach to video games, but I appreciate Silicon Knights' ideas too, and so even if the company did return to Nintendo, I'm certain it would be on their own terms, as a third party.  They don't want to make games for a casual audience, they want to make games for Sci-Fi/Fantasy nerds like me.

Edit: As for Factor 5, if they come back and offer a good game, I'll buy it.  I don't really hold grudges.

I'm a little concerned.  I'm sure Wii Music will come and I'm sure it will be good, but I wonder if Nintendo is allowing too much time to pass before releasing more disruptive software?  The only 100% disruptive product on the system now is WiiSports.  Mario Party 8, Wario Ware, Cooking Mama and Rayman RR are filling in the gaps reasonably well, but I think there's a danger of new customers losing interest before anyone gets around to providing more software for them.

Then again, maybe I'm underestimating the power of some of these other games.

Looks like I have to actually finish the original now.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo is rising to Heaven
« on: July 20, 2007, 05:48:28 AM »
If Nintendo truly expanded the market in a big way I could see it reaching towards the top (probably not higher than Toyota?), but assuming it winds up with a more down-to-earth showing (say DS and Wii hit around 100 million each) I'd agree that the top 3 is as high as it can go.

Us Canadians love us some Wii!  I'm impressed to see Wii actually outsell DS somewhere.  I think that's going to become normal in a couple of years when Wii hits its peak and DS is on its way out, but for Wii to beat DS anywhere right now is pretty surprising.

This just in: Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy XIII and MGS IV prove htat Sony is the only company that cares about the future of gaming!

Nintendo is doing a good job of continuing outreach efforts to third parties even after the Wiis obvious success.  I'm glad to see it.

I didn't realize that I had to walk right up to the spiked balls that "Bowser" throws in Luigi's Mansion to pick them up.  I tried sucking them up from a distance, and gave up and read a FAQ after wasting about two hours trying to beat him.

Maybe he's tired of always picking losing teams!
Moore is pretty colourful.  He has a greater tendency to speak what's on his mind than other PR people, even if it's only to deflect more important questions (i.e. his recent comments about how Sony is doing relatively worse in Japan compared to expectations than Microsoft is).

I always felt the same way, actually.  Realistically, though, it's just Nintendo setting her up for the typical kidnapping scenario.  The Zelda series has some good writing, but the plots aren't exactly brilliant.

Edit: wait this is the Funhouse...the writing in Zelda is pure bullshot.  You might as well read the Da Vinci Code or Hemmingway.

245
Amen to that, S_B.  Oddly I think it would have had a better chance on the original Xbox...I believe that system snapped up a lot of N64 fans that wanted FPSs.  360...who knows what audience it's getting, but my impression it that it's die-hard Xbox fans plus a smattering of Sony fans that are either disappointed with PS3 or couldn't wait for next-gen systems.

246
I think the idea is that all the companies are starting to take a more realistic approach to marketing.  You put all this money into marketing a product people won't even be able to play for 2-3 years, and what's the point?

I think they're looking forward to taking control of the timing of game announcements and advertising and spreading it out over the whole year rather than force-feeding us 200 new games in a single week.

Would anyone care about Zack and Wiki or Space Station Tycoon if they were announced in the midst of a traditional E3?  If they had to compete with Zelda Wii and Animal Crossing Wii, would we even remember them?  Most people barely remember SST as it is, really.

General Gaming / RE: Penny-Arcade's take on Reggie @ E3 2007
« on: July 13, 2007, 06:20:49 AM »
Well, he is presumably talking about everything from Canada down to Chile or whatever the heck country is at the bottom of South America (Google image search - hey, I was right!)  But the point about Reggie's advert-speak from this year's press conference is well-taken.

Now we can see why Microsoft didn't lower its own price.  By Sony's own reckoning the 60GBs will be sold out around the end of July and then in August it will be back to lousy, lousy sales.  I wouldn't be surprised if Sony cuts the 80GB unit down to $500 closer to the holidays.

For the time being, how could Sony have handled this situation better?  Should Sony have told everyone this was temporary up front?  Should it just have phased the 60GB units out at the existing price?  I think some people would have paid $600 just knowing the Emotion Engine was going, but I guess they should be happy that Sony gave them a slight deal.

General Gaming / RE: Microsoft showing their true colors once again.
« on: July 13, 2007, 06:08:24 AM »
Volish what???  Who is that source anyway??

I'm sure that all the 360s are potentially faulty, but like Kairon says, MS will avoid a recall at all costs.  It would hamper business for months to come, the warranty set-up allows them to spread the misery out over the next three years.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Contra 4

That's a shame. On the other hand, Wired thought the game was a perfect sequel to the originals on NES and Super NES....'cept for C Force or whatever it was called, I suppose.
