Nintendo Gaming / RE: Favorite Zelda Moments
« on: November 17, 2006, 07:05:15 AM »
I failed at the Sun Mask quest because my stupid Wavebird ran out of batteries!  It was heart-breaking.  Especially since the glitchy GCN version of the game FROZE on me the previous time that I made it to the Sun Mask section.

Floor Masters and Wall Masters are indeed freaky. I hated to hear their sound effect in the first Legend of Zelda, it always made my heart jump.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Developer Survey: Wii or PS3 @ launch?
« on: November 17, 2006, 07:01:33 AM »
I'm surprised how fanboyish some of the comments are, especially this one:
Quote

I am buying a Wii because Sony is too arrogant, from their dev tools to the price point.

   Ed O'Tey, Electronic Arts

Because he's from Electronic Arts.  I'd expect a much more "PR" response from such a big player.  The other most surprising is this:
Quote

Just a Wii for me! Pre ordered it. My decision was based on Nintendo's consistent awesomeness as opposed to Sony's ass-ness.

John McCann, Branch Line

Because he actually implies that Sony has been "ass-y" for a while - not just with PS3.  Of course, devs were quite positive about Nintendo and GameCube when GameCube was first launching.  I remember some guy from Namco saying Nintendo was the only first-party company that cared about innovation.

Neat comments.

I know this stuff's definitely not easy to change, and I'm not expecting any miracles or anything, just giving my feedback for future reference.  I totally appreciate how many other important things must be going on since I code, write and design my own site.  I've been working on an overhaul like this and I've spent two years to get worse results than NWR has managed in just half a year.

Two more things I noticed:
- I like the colour coding on the system names in the news (eg. orange for Game Boy Advance)...I missed that before (maybe because there are so many Wii articles)
- In Firefox 1.0.7 (yeah it's old) the menu bar sometimes appears above the rest fo the content instead of beside.  Most noticeable on the splash page.

PS2 took a pretty big dive after the PS3 launch.  I'm surprised, considering how few people actually got one.

I personally doubt PS3 will ever sell more than 100,000 in one week in Japan this year.  Where is Sony going to get those magical extra PS3s when they could only provide 80,000 on the first day - after months of ramp-up time?

General Gaming / RE:Did Sony lie about PS3 availability at US retailers?

Also in Calgary, I was planning to find a PS3 and resell...HA HA HA.  I saw the lineups last night at 5 PM and figured I wouldn't even bother trying, but I checked Superstore at 10:30 PM last night and they had no lineup....WOW!  Went back this morning at 7 and they were sold out - I bet the reason there was no lineup is that they sold them at closing time last night.  I couldn't even find the tail end of any lineups...there must have been a few midnight/late night launches.

I checked about four stores (and drove past the ones that had lineups last night) and every store was clearly sold out and most had signs saying the had no idea when new shipments would come in and that Sony had failed to deliver the number of units it promised.  I asked the guy at one Wal Mart and he said they only got 6 units in.

Wow.  So much for my scalping plans, looks like I'm going to have to cut back on Wii.

Criticisms:

- I find the menu bar kind of melts into all the other text on the page.
- The watermark on images seems bigger than ever -  an unfortunate trend across all media these days.
- Feels very empty.  The excitement I used to feel when I opened the site is gone, to be honest.  (this is my smallest complaint, though)

Kudos (argh so cute):

- The new image viewer is nifty
- the main headlines are nicely split up

Ha ha, that's for sure, I'd go play a PS3 if someone was offering me the chance.

Ha ha, all it says for Calgary is that someone is selling a Toys R' Us preorder - for just $202.

At least this should send a clear message to Nintendo that gamers want this feature.

Yes, I also really want a Rayman review.  If there isn't one before launch day I may by Yoshi's Island instead.  I can rent  Wii games.

WHAT?  There isn't even a single topic (except for some "new movies of Chibi Robo and Yoshi's Island) on this game.  It's out, is it not?  Has anyone played it?

I will have to get this game sooner or later, but because of Wii it might wind up being later.  I've seen that reviews are ranging anywhere from "awesome sequel we've been waiting for" to "meh".  The review I trust the most, IGN, suggests that it's a faithful sequel but fails to surprise enough.  Sounds good enough to me.

Opinions, please!

Maybe the issue is focusing on Wii too much?  I mean, I'm planning to try and have a party but it's not going to be "EVERYONE MUST CONVERT TO WII AT MY PARTY." (little exagerration there )  I find just getting people together is a huge chore nowdays, my friends are all getting married and becoming domesticated.  Blah.

Edit: but my point was, getting people together should be first priority, with Wii as the centrepiece for the get-together?  Maybe?

Yeah, absolutely.  Of course, the other thing to remember is that 8.0 is actually a good score.  In theory - it's a different reviewer so it's not quite true - but in theory, this means that IGN likes Excite Truck more than Mario Kart: Double Dash (7.9).  Even if the truth is that they consider it about equal to Double Dash, I'd still say that makes it a pretty good game.

It seems possible to me that Nintendo will want us to rebuy our VC games on the next console...which would stink, but I definitely wouldn't count it out.

I'm interested in a couple of the Genesis/TG 16 games, but I don't know if I'll buy any. Toejam and Earl?  Gunstar Heroes?  Those are the ones that have my attention mostly.

I'm hot for Link, but I'd hardly call him metro...he's a farm boy!  He runs around in a green hood - and shirtless wrestling?  That's more trailer parksexual than metrosexual.  Case in point:

Actually, Nintendo is trying to get people to not use the Nintendo brand when discussing Wii.  Weird, eh?

Now, Sony is doomed, but Playstation Portable, there's something that will never die!  Microsoft will buy the brand from Sony's going out of business sale and we'll have the X PSP 3.14.

I think Wii is going to be much easier to get than PS3.  Nintendo's shipments aren't as limited, the brand hype is lower, and the price probably has fewer Ebay goons seeing dollar signs.

I am hoping to get a PS3 for Ebaying...but if people are lining up like this in my city (haven't checked) then forget it.

General Gaming / RE: The worth of PS3, your opinion?
« on: November 16, 2006, 05:18:14 AM »
Well for me personally I wouldn't buy this machine even if it was only $300 just because I'm not that impressed with next-gen graphics.  At $200-$250 if there was no such thing as Wii, I'd definitely consider it.

My peak for a console I really want would probably $500 CDN - which is the price of the better Xbox 360.  But I don't really want 360 or PS3.  Would I pay $500 for Wii?  No, as that would clearly be gouging on Nintendo's part and the launch lineup isn't worth it, but I'd be more likely to consider it than the other two consoles.  If Wii had the power of 360 PLUS everything else it brings to the table, then yeah, I'd pay $500 CDN.

Edit: unclear writing.

It seems like people's interest in this game is inverse-proportional to how creepy they think the King is.  With an ARGH IM COUNTERCULTURE factor thrown in.

I think it looks funny - if I had an Xbox I might grab it...but I don't.

I'd say that depends on when they set the target.  If it was set back at E3...well, nobody expected shortages like this at that time.

I'm sorry but that certainly makes it sound like they care about graphics, as long as it's not a Nintendo made machine that is.

But it's also a true statement.  I admit, if this guy's talking about framerates and stuff, maybe he should be more aware of Wii's increased power over PS2.  That said, at the end of the day, "anybody with eyes" can tell that Wii is closer to PS2 than it is to Xbox 360 or PS3.  The sooner people get over that, the sooner we can stop freaking out every time someone states the obvious - Wii is not extremely powerful.

Well, points should be taken away fi the controls aren't as good as traditional control.  However, in the case where it's equal to, they should [not] be taken away.

Mostly, I think people shouldn't worry about "low" review scores.  If you're worried that the games aren't as good as you hoped, rent them first!  If you're worried that these reviews are going to hurt Wii, don't.  Most people won't even read them.

I think a lot of us are going to subjectively enjoy Wii games more than the scores are letting on.  The new experience will make it even more fun!  However, I respect that some reviewers see that better games will be coming down the line.  And I'm sure they're right in a lot of cases.  The Excite Truck review ended on that note - there's probably going to be a better arcade racing game this generation.  One that's online, allows four players, and takes more than a day to play through all the tracks.

Very late edit: how did I miss that not?

My NTDOY have supposedly gone up over 100% since I bought them, but I think maybe that's a miscalculation on Etrade's part.  It has gone up at least 50% though.

I don't know if now is the best time to buy NTDOY, though...we're so close to launch that expectations must be extremely high, the launch would have to amazingly well for expectations to go up any further.  And after launch, I'm betting they'll fall off a bit again.
