Nintendo Gaming / RE: New Channels/broswer and VC release date
« on: November 21, 2006, 03:52:43 AM »
Yeah, the initial lineup for VC is pretty thin, I hope they start next Monday...not that I can afford to buy anything anyway.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Official Wii Sales Thread

If BNM's numbers are about right (they look decent to me), then:

87.1% for Microsoft
9.7% for Nintendo
3.2% for Sony

Not bad considering Nintendo has been on the market for three days.  GameCube only has about 14% of the last-gen marketshare, and it had around 6% at the end of 2001.  Wii could have over 25% by the end of the year.

What will be really interesting is seeing how Wii and PS3 are doing in a few months when the PS3 supply is fixed and the new game releases thin out.   Xbox 360 will probably win for a couple of months there.  I really hope Nintendo has a couple more games than it announced last week.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: About the launch titles
« on: November 21, 2006, 03:38:05 AM »
I think a lot of the secondary games are a bit disappointing - Excite Truck without four players, Red Steel's not that great, and supposedly Super Monkey Ball is not up to par with the originals - but you've got Zelda, and a lot of those other games are still good, just not amazing.

I'd rank this as a better launch than any other system since Dreamcast.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Wii - Flat or, Standing up?
« on: November 20, 2006, 01:47:28 PM »
I like how it looks in the stand, but I'd put it horizontal if I was in need of space.  I had it horizontal on my parents' VCR, but it got really hot.  Partly the VCR?  Or it is the OVERHEAT?

Wow, do you guys all live in puny-ville, or is Canada just a superior nation?  The Wal-Mart I went to is the "smallest" in the city, and still got 54 units.  We heard rumours when we were lining up around midnight that there might only be 16-18, but those were patently false.  I think just about everyone who showed up by opening time got one, but I'd say only the ones there by 5:00AM were "for sure".  By comparison, the same store only got 6 PS3s.  I can't wait to see the hardware sales for November!

P.S./Edit: I did say it would be easy to get, but I changed my mind after the preorders were so popular.  For those living in Europe and hoping to get one on launch day, I strongly recommend phoning the stores you want to go to a day or two before, and check for lineups around 10-11 PM the night before.

I have no problems - but I purposely bought a Wireless network hub recommended by Nintendo.

I have noticed that some of the Wii menu screens get little black lines across them once in a while, accompanied by some static.  Does anyone else have this, or is it just my TV?

Gentlemen, we are witnessing the beginning of the Nintendo revival.   Good luck to all of you!

All the people in Ordon are great.  Maybe I got too attached to them from wandering around for an hour trying that thing we were talking about before.

I had so much stuff I wanted to comment on but now I've forgotten most of it!

From the first twighlight section:
Midna is very annoying, but also the most helpful assistant Link has ever had, I'd have to say.  The scene with the villain attacking Hyrule castle was awesome.  I'm assuming it's Ganondorf, they were smart to cover him up.  Oh the suspensefulness!

From the first dungeon:
The Gale Boomerang is really awesome.  It was when I learned that I could actually use it to deliver bombs straight to my targets that it suddenly became one of my all-time favourites.

From the second twighlight section:
I like how the game makes you give up control every time you enter the twighlight.  No items, Midna treating you like her personal slave, and no going back until you revive the spirit.  It's scary but fun.  Oh yeah, and finding the kids again in Kakariko was pretty emotional.

I wanted to get this one on day one, but they didn't have it at Wal Mart.  Seeing as I already spent more than I should have on my Wii, I'll probably wait a week or two before I look for it.

I could definitely see the games being a "mixed bag", that's my only worry about this one.  One of the things that I think is clever about Wario Ware is that the pure tinyness of the games makes it hard to criticize any one of them over the others.  Sure you will have favourites and you'll play some and think, "That's just like that other one", but you don't get to play any of them long enough to think, "This is actually pretty badly designed"...which is something I think quite often about the games in Mario Party and Feel the Magic.

Yes, that cat sidequest is freakin' hard.  I tried without any bait for quite a while and I was getting nowhere.  I'm glad someone mentioned it on here, because I didn't want to waste my whole day off searching for a bottle to hold bee larvae.

Awesome game!  When I captured the baby bassinet, I was so excited that I waved my hands in the air...and Link threw it into the river.  Oh balls.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The Wiimote Speaker, and Twilight Princess
« on: November 20, 2006, 03:34:45 AM »
You know, I can get into it after a while, but I think I will turn the volume down a bit.  I think it's a neat feature but the Wiimote "ugly" sound outweighs the good sound from my TV, which I'm not crazy about.

Wii Sports made better use of it by just sticking to very simple sound effects...no musical effects or anything.  I wish Nintendo had put a little extra $$$ into the speaker though..it could have been an amazing feature instead it's a neat but  disappointing one.

My Wal Mart made us wait EVERY LAST MINUTE.  Right up to like 5 minutes PAST 7.   The TORTURE!  Maybe it's a Canadian thing but it seems like any time there's a big lineup to go into a store, they'll make you wait until AFTER opening time.  Would it have killed them to let us in just 5-15 minutes early?

You know, I can somewhat agree with the guy on the argument that the game isn't changed that much (at least from the other 3D iterations) but I'd be interested to know what amazing innovative games he's playing on other systems right now.  I'm willing to bet some of them are pretty much the "same old" game design only with a new franchise tossed in.

Yes, this game is awesome.  It even got my mom playing, which never happens.  Couldn't get my dad to play, he was being a wuss ("Oh you'll make fun of me").  Whatever!

This will likely be the centerpiece if I can get anyone to come to a party.

Ha ha ha...well, you could say the same for tickets to sports, but lotteries for major sporting events have become really poular lately.

(c) 1993 Nintendo of America.

P.S. Has anyone ever read "Even a Monkey can Draw Manga"?  It's co-written by one of the guys who worked on Super Mario Bros. Adventures and it sounds hilarious.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Q1 2007 Release Dates
« on: November 17, 2006, 09:41:55 AM »
I don't think Microsoft will bother with a handheld unless Xbox becomes a hit in the home console arena first.  Nintendo clearly owns the handheld arena so much, it's a bad idea.

This list is exactly the kind of thing I was worried about: Metroid and Mario are nowhere to be seen, not to mention Batallion Wars II and Super Mario Strikers.  Not even Project HAMMER or Day of Disaster?  I'm sure Nintendo doesn't plan to release all six of those games in April...so...yucky dry spell.  Not terrible, but worse than Nintendo implied.  I'm used to Nintendo delaying things, but that's a lot of delayage.

Honestly, knowing this, I won't feel so bad if I can't get a Wii on Sunday.

edit: Wario: Master of Disguise sounds cool, but DS needs more games like Hollywood needs another computer animated movie about talking animals.

This is so stupid and horrible.  I said it somewhere else, but if the Wii lineups are anything like this...even remotely, I'm not bothering.  It's just a game system.

Is should go join one of these huge lineups and walk in and buy "ALF" season 1.  "What, you mean YOU guys aren't here for ALF?"

Wii and DS  will probably both outsell PS3 for Novebmer just because Sony has such poor shipment numbers.

I don't recall PSP being this bad.  I didn't pay that much attention, but it wasn't selling for thousands on Ebay, was it?

A lottery at Best Buy makes sense because I don't think they took preorders.  I actually like the lottery system, tell people not to bother waiting in line, just come at 12 AM (or whenever) and you'll be entered in a lottery.  It prevents problems like the one VGRevolution had, where a tent at the front of the line kept adding people to their group, and it also discourages week-long lineups.

I have no idea how that one is getting $100,000, but I'm impressed to see many going for thousands of dollars.  I guess it would have been worth it to camp out overnight after all, I was beginning to doubt it due to supposedly low resale value of the Japanese models.

General Gaming / RE: Sony getting hit Hard lately
« on: November 17, 2006, 07:28:33 AM »
I agree with KDR on the "PS3 will do great later on" theory.  If PS3 keeps falling behind, it will never catch up.  The system is already losing third party support (most notably Square Enix saying it wouldn't support any one console over the rest) and that will snowball if PS3 doesn't make up a lot of ground in the next 12 months.  I figure that next Christmas will be Sony's last chance to turn the tables on Microsoft, and after that, it's doomed to second place.

What about Wii?  I think Wii's success or failure will have little to do with Sony and Microsoft. They're focused on each other now, and even if they weren't, there's just no practical way to market PS3 vs. Wii.  If Wii becomes a big success, the best the others can do is beat each other.  If Wii's a big failure, it will be because Nintendo failed to create the games and the third party support Wii needed.  Excepting backroom shenanigans involving moneyhats and corporate espionage, there's not a lot Microsoft and Sony can do about Wii if the concept catches peoples' attention.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Yoshi's Island DS
« on: November 17, 2006, 07:14:03 AM »
The irony is that Yoshi's Story was supposed to be about Baby Yoshis, but then they kind of kept that design for all Yoshis.  That said, I like Yoshi's voice.  It's cute.  In fact I like the voices for most of the Mario characters, except Bowser and Peach.  Interestingly, those are the two that changed actors from the N64 to GameCube.  Which just goes to show that my tolerance for change started disappearing somewhere during the N64 era instead of before.

Edit: I really wanted to pick this game up today, but I need every penny for Wii, since I don't have any PS3s to make me rich, rich, RICH!
