It's a robot with a sword, what's to figure out?  Actually, I played a Gundam game on Xbox and couldn't figure it out either.  Only the best of the best can pilot a GUNDAM.

I've noticed that in almost all N64 and later Zelda games they get easier as you go along, because you get those much-needed hearts.  Minish Cap was one exception, because healing items aren't as powerful in that game.

One idea that I think might be cool is to make it so that a fairy can only revive Link with, say 3/4 of his hearts, but if you're careful enough to use it before you die, it refills everything.

I'm trying to take this one slow, but every time I see how far ahead everyone is on me I want to PLAY PLAY PLAY!!  I'm just starting out on the second dungeon.  Gorons are cool, but their rocky nipples are freaky.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: is it all hype? (UK onlooker)
« on: November 21, 2006, 09:57:56 AM »
On the topic of hype - yes I'm biased, but at the same time I can honestly say that within an hour or two of playing GameCube, the initial wow factor was wearing off.  I've put something like 14 hours into Wii, and I'm still impressed by every minute of it.  I can't wait to play it with other people again.  My mom was playing with us and kept trying to get my dad to join.  She told me to bring it back on Friday when they have guests and to bring it along to my Grandparents' place for Christmas.  My mom had 0 interest in GameCube, and maybe 0.1 interest in N64.

There are problems!
- the speaker in the controller is not so great (but works fine for certain types of sounds and can be turned down)
- the motion sensing is not 100%
- in Wii boxing in particular, the motion sensing is imperfect - yet it's still fun
- the Channels may run out of space for VC games?? (Nintendo can send out a firmware update if so)
- the first firmware update caused some issues

There are good things!
- Wii sports is even better than I imagined, and anyone can learn it
- Twighlight Princess controls better than any previous 3D Zelda
- The controller has tons of potential
- The interface is great and the photo channel is awesome

Basically, the system makes gaming new again.  Sure I'm going to adjust to it after a while, but I adjusted to Xbox 360 graphics without even buying one.

Edit: If you're waiting to make sure Wii has a good lineup of games, then good on you.  This could turn out like N64 - I loved that system so much at first, but the lineup was very disappointing overall.  However, like N64, that's a risk I'm willing to take in order to play these fun new games - and I have a feeling Wii is going to do very well in terms of game selection.

Yeah, the PS3 tie-in is probably lower overall too, though.  Wii is going strong...I can't wait until the Japanese and European launches...it could become the number 1 next-gen console in Japan in just one day.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Next Wii shipment??
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:17:14 AM »
Actually, I should revise my last comment - the beginning of the Nintendo revival was last Christmas when DS sold over 800,000 units in one week in Japan.

But this is the point where all the hard work starts to pay off with concrete sales in the home console market.

Quoted for truth.  I haven't played the GameCube version, but compared to the other 3D Zeldas, the only complaint I might have about the controls in this one would be that you can't rotate the camera 360 degrees a la the c-stick in Wind Waker.  Even that's not a big deal since the Z-targeting/camera centering seems to have been sharpened up a lot since the N64 games.

I fell in love with the photo channel when I saw videos of the photos swirling around like a tornado as the user zoomed in and out.  It's just so slick and well-thought-out.

I liked them better but if it pleases developers and cuts down on games with horribly compressed audio/video (I'm looking at you, Prince of Persia) then it's worth it.

This system is the closest I've come to recapturing the high N64 and NES gave me.  I was kind of disappointed that DS didn't capture that feeling for me, but this...this is awesome.

I love the interface and channels.

I love the motion control.

I love Wii Sports and Zelda.

I suspect I'd love a number of other games, but I haven't got the money to buy any yet.

Oh, I agree, Wii's failures so far seem to be within reason - and the company will replace a broken Wii in 3 days, without even asking you to ship yours back for up to 24 days!  8-12 days if you want your personal Wii repaired and returned - still better than either of the others.

Pros:
- hotter chicks than Wind Waker, equal or greater than Ocarina
- it's a wolf attack!
- one guy got beaten up and he had an eye-patch and everything

Cons:
- bad speaker LOL
- bad last-gen graphics double LOL
- when you're a wolf, you can't maul monsters while they're down
- disturbing nipple ornatments on the Gorons
- Link loves Rusl

This game rates 3.69/10, not very next-gen at all!

One guy bought the second place in line for just $200!  The person who sold it to him was planning to resell on Ebay, so I guess she figured it was just less hassle.

I could have showed up at about 6:30 AM and still gotten one...wouldn't have waited in line as long as I had to to preorder.

That said...I camped out all night and froze my buns off.  Then a hobo walked by and used them for his hot dog.

My milk is always expiring early these days.  I feel like dumping it all over the heads of the people in Co-op, but instead I just get smaller jugs of milk.  Mmmm jugs of milk.

The PS3 grill is pretty funny.

Surprisingly, I've heard nothing about bricked PS3s.  In fact, I have heard that the initial system updates bricked a few Wiis.  Sony's the new Nintendo, has the world gone mad?

No, not really.  I'm sure stories of PS3 problems will come up but it may take a while for things to start breaking on a large scale.

Eh, Midna's cute, but she's so bossy and rude.  I actually like her character in that she's exactly what Nintendo wanted - someone you don't think you can trust.

My first death in the game involved walking into someone's fireplace.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The amazing thing about Wii Launch.
« on: November 21, 2006, 04:04:36 AM »
In my Wii lineup of the first 20 people, two were planning to sell.  The local newspaper reported on the PS3 lineups and claimed that most people in those lines were planning to sell.  The experience was pretty fun, except for those hours around 3-5 AM where some people started crashing out so there was nobody to talk to (and it was too cold to read or play DS).

The funniest part was when we were getting really close to 7 AM and suddenly the lights all went out.  You could hear the groans for miles around.  They came back on after a few seconds.

There still must be a fair amount of demand for PS3 since it's selling so well on Ebay, but my uneducated guess is that Wii actually has equal or greater demand.  I can't wait until Sony straightens out its issues so we can see how badly people REALLY want it.

1199
Yeah, I put on a slideshow, drew stuff on people, and tried all the silly filters.  The photo channel is actually quite awesome.  I plan to use it instead of my camera to show pictures on TV from now on - if it's handy.

Ha ha, that's hilarious, I can't believe they made something like that.
