You can't see the forest for the trees. Xenoblade has some ugly elements (so do Super Mario Galaxy and Wind Waker), but its primary aesthetic features, especially the wide open world design and deliberate focus on mixed scales, will make the game impressive for many years to come. These are artistic elements that can't be mass- produced by the next generation of game engines.

My goals when I selected that email for the show were to treat it seriously, keep a tight context of video games, and avoid any comments based more on political ideology than on simple reason. I felt good about how it went at the time, but in anxious to hear how it sounds a second time, especially after Guillaume sanding off the burrs.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 382: The Gerenicity

The gang is back with brand new Nintendo games, Dark Souls 2, the Tomodachi controversy, and your emails!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/37390/episode-382-the-gerenicity

James kicks off this episode with extended thoughts on Stick It to the Man, a bizarre comedy-adventure out now on Wii U and several other platforms. Guillaume checks out Kirby Triple Deluxe for 3DS and learns that it's... a lot like other Kirby games. He also shares final thoughts and a weighted recommendation for Child of Light. Feeling inspired by our recent discussions of Mario sports games, Jon checks out the classic Mario Tennis for Game Boy Color (thanks to Virtual Console). Jonny celebrates the announcement of a Metroid-style sequel to Stealth Inc. (on Wii U, no less!) by trying the first game on his Vita. He also tries Dark Souls 2 --after many, many suggestions by RFN listeners-- and finds much to enjoy, amid all the frustration and curse-filled rage.

We have a great selection of Listener Mail this week, starting with a past-blast as we're asked to follow up on a comment made on the show in 2010 about how Wii games would hold up, graphically speaking, years later. It expands into a larger discussion of why some games look great forever, while others are hard to revisit -- and which generations struggled the most with it. Next up is a timely question about diverse characters and stories in Nintendo games, which gave us a perfect chance to recap and discuss the very fluid Tomodachi Life controversy. Keep in mind that we recorded this before Nintendo of America's updated comments! These topics ate up most of our time, but we fit in one more question about the impact of stereoscopic 3D displays on free-roaming 3D platformers. Yeah, it's a bit confusing.

We've got more catching up to do for Listener Mail in the coming weeks, and there's been a surprising amount of news considering it's pre-E3 season, so please continue to let us know what you think and suggest topics for the show! Until next time, you can also hear more from Guillaume on the Purpose Rockstar podcast, as well as Jonny and Karl freaking out over the energetic vocals of Otis Redding on a new episode of Discover Music Project.

This is a much better response and what should have been said in the first place.

Of course, there will be another game in the series. It's a MASSIVE hit in Japan, and Nintendo isn't in a position to turn down that kind of money. It will be very interesting to see how they implement these features in the next game, and also how they juggle the messaging at that time.

TalkBack / Metroid Prime Marathon Weekend

Watch us play Metroid Prime, live!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/37388/metroid-prime-marathon-weekend

Update: The stream is over, and we vanquished the Metroid Prime with a game clock of 10 hrs, 15 min. (Turns out the clock is paused while you look at the map... the total play time was actually 13 hours!) Thanks to all who watched and chatted with us. We didn't manage to get the charity donation box set up, due to a misunderstanding with Child's Play, but we'll try that again next time.

Hey everybody, I'm experimenting with live gameplay/commentary streaming throughout this weekend. Along with my friends Marco and Alec, I'll try to play through the entire original Metroid Prime -- although we are streaming the beautiful, widescreen version included in Metroid Prime Trilogy for Wii. Even better, we're playing it on Wii U, so the video output is through HDMI and directly into my new capture device. We also have a microphone set up to pick up our live commentary, so please do interact! We might even need some help to avoid getting stuck...

Watching is very easy -- head over to my Twitch channel, or just use the embedded player below. We'll keep an eye on the chat, so please do let us know you're watching!

Oh, this would be a good time to remind everyone of our Forum Rules, which are enforced in Talkback just like any other section of the forum. There is a way to discuss this topic and explore disagreements in a respectful way. Much of what I see above fails that test. We will moderate users who use personal insults or break any other rule. There's a reason we make you read that stuff when creating an account.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=27460.0

* You may not post obscene, racist, defamatory, or otherwise offensive material.

* You may not personally insult another user.

* These topics are strictly off-limits: politics, religion, sexual orientation.

(Note: A narrow exemption will be made to the above prohibition for the scope of discussion relevant to this specific news story -- posts should adhere to the game and Nintendo's response. This is not the place to step on a soapbox or lay out your platform for broader social issues.)

284
I'm surprised Nintendo of America didn't have more nuanced response ready to go. They must have known this would become a discussion topic as soon as they decided to release the game in America in 2014 (whereas arguments probably wouldn't have gained much traction for the original DS game in 2009).

This kind of controversy is exactly why Nintendo guarded Miis for so long and had very tight restrictions on how they could be used in games. I don't think there was even a game with direct control over Miis until... Mario Kart? Now they are launching a game in which characters that look like friends, family, and you interact in a wacky version of real life events, including romantic relationships. Seeing unexpected pairings is in fact a huge part of Tomodachi's appeal. When you create a game that incorporates players' own likenesses into a kind of simulation, there is an expectation that players can create a reasonable characterization of themselves and see the game play upon that characterization. Seeing these abstracted versions of ourselves form relationships and share personal moments, who might not do so in real life IS THE GAME.

I fall on the side of those who think this is just a basic feature lacking from Tomodachi, and the game is a weaker package without it. It's especially thoughtless to exclude such combinations when this is a sequel. However, if this is something you truly care about, and the game is otherwise appealing, the best thing you can do is buy this one and help ensure that subsequent Tomodachi games will also be released worldwide. There's no way Nintendo can make this mistake again, with the expectations of a multi-region audience.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 381: A Golden Opportunity
« on: May 04, 2014, 10:26:57 PM »

RetroActive: Goldeneye Online is finally complete, with the help from a friend. We also check out several brand new Nintendo games!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/37330/episode-381-a-golden-opportunity

After several weeks of teasing and preparation, it's finally time to realize the 30th RetroActive feature with Goldeneye 007 for Wii. But first, we have loads of fresh Nintendo games in New Business. James is up first with the surprise dump of Mega Man Xtreme on 3DS Virtual Console. It's hard to believe we're talking about an old handheld game being made available on this service, but maybe not as unlikely as an adaptation of the Mega Man X series for Game Boy Color turning out pretty good. Jonny follows that with effusive praise for NES Remix 2, the one that gets it right. He also piggybacks onto Guillaume's impressions for Child of Light, the new Canadian Role-Playing Game (CRPG) available on your Wii U and other platforms. Finally, Jon catches up with the Mario Golf: World Tour demo on 3DS as we try to figure out whether any of us is excited by another Mario sports game, regardless of its quality.

In the latter half of the show, we do make good on RetroActive, with considerable help from our friend Nicholas Bray (the NWR Powered Off mastermind). We all played Goldeneye online for this feature, sometimes with each other, and managed to have a lot of fun despite innate problems with the Nintendo WiFi Connection service, not to mention a few balance issues with the game itself. Maybe we won't mourn Friend Codes and the inability to patch these games, but it is justifiably sad to see such a fun multiplayer game shut down. Thanks so much to everyone who played online with us! If your interest was piqued, and you'd still like to play this game online before the servers shut down in late May, try to drum up interest right here.

Listener Mail is definitely in the cards next week, and we have plenty of ground to cover with reactions to Nintendo's E3 plans, RFN 400 feedback, and much more. Let us know what you'd like to hear discussed, and we'll try to make it happen!

RetroActive will return...

Podcast Discussion / Episode 380: Will the Circle Be Not Broken
« on: April 27, 2014, 02:33:50 PM »

Guillaume is back with tons of games from PAX East and otherwise! We also revisit Mario 3 and even preview our grand plans for RFN 400 this fall.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/37272/episode-380-will-the-circle-be-not-broken

It's been two weeks without our beloved Guillaume, and now he's back from Boston to edit the show, talk about games, and edit the show. He kicks off New Business with final thoughts on Earthbound, a rare mention of Mario Kart Arcade Grand Prix DX (it sucks!), and long overdue praise for Kirby Air Ride. The latter pair also brings in the group for some comparisons to what we expect from Mario Kart 8. Jon is up next, having played a game for the first time in a while (poor guy), and it's a doozie -- Super Mario Bros. 3! The game holds many surprises and delights for those of us who haven't played it in a while, and it makes us nostalgic for the days when a 2D Mario game could be so exciting and crammed full of new ideas. Jonny follows up with another old 2D game, Adventure Island II on the 3DS Virtual Console, and he finds it a worthwhile experience despite some annoyances. James closes the segment with his thoughts on the Mario Golf: World Tour (3DS) demo and recent DLC announcement, plus the oddball news of a new Ace Attorney game set in a very particular historical period of Japan. It's one of those times we were very glad to have James around to explain things!

After the break and return of Now Playing (sorry), we get a nice report from Gui on PAX East 2014 and what it was like being there without the full RFN crew to do a panel. Note that you can hear a lot more about the games he played there, as well as much more from the NWR staff who could attend this year, on a gigantic recent episode of Connectivity. The last feature topic of the week is a special preview of our plans/hopes/dreams for Episode 400 of Radio Free Nintendo. It's all very much in flux, and in fact much of this was new to most of the crew, so you'll hear their first reactions and some initial planning discussion for how we might make this milestone our biggest and most ambitious show yet. We very much want to know what listeners think of these ideas, because you're going to be heavily involved no matter what we do! Please send feedback and submit any additional suggestions via email, in the Talkback area below, at the stellar NeoGAF thread, or via the social media platform of your choice.

We are in the final stages of preparation for RetroActive, and it's definitely happening on the next episode. That leaves you just a few days to play Goldeneye (Wii) online with us and fellow listeners before we record the feature -- and the whole online mode will shut down soon after that! For the best experience, it's important that you post your Friend Code in the official forum thread and register others found there. It also helps a lot to be playing at the same time as everyone else, so keep an eye on RFN's social media (Facebook and Twitter) as well as Jonny's online meet-up/instructions blog for the next one... evenings this Monday through Wednesday (U.S. time) are a good bet!

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is going extinct in a few weeks, but there's still time to play one of the best online Wii games with cool people. Next, maybe last chance to play with the RFN guys is tonight at 9pm Eastern / 6 Pacific!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/37270/play-goldeneye-wii-online-with-nwr-staff-and-fans-before-its-too-late

Keep checking NWR and follow @Nintendo_NWR on Twitter, or "Like" Radio Free Nintendo on Facebook to hear about things like this sooner.

It's a bit late notice, but I'm declaring an official online meet-up tonight to play Goldeneye online. If you have this great Wii game, dust it off for one of your last, best chances to find opponents online before the servers go down forever next month. You can play any time, of course, but we'll try to get a posse together around 9pm Eastern Daylight Time (6pm Pacific) tonight.

Goldeneye was the listener's choice for the latest edition of RetroActive, a recurring feature on Radio Free Nintendo. The whole point is to get everyone playing and talking about the same game to develop a robust discussion, and this time, it's all about the online mode! There are several match types, so if you don't see much activity in one, check a few others before giving up.

There's already an official forum thread for RetroActive, so please drop your Friend Code in there and add as many others as you can from the posts above. To find your Friend Code, and register others, select Multiplayer from the main menu, then Nintendo WFC (online), then Party Invite. (After registering several codes, it may help to log out of the online mode and back in. This seems to help the service pair up codes and grab people's user names for your friend list.)

If you're waiting for people to add your code for a complete pair, just jump into the public matches -- there aren't many people playing in general, so there's a good chance you'll run into some familiar names from NWR and the forums. Once you have a list of friends filled out, try jumping into someone's match (a handy feature, directly from the friend list) or invite a few of them to a party. Then you can choose any type of online match, and everyone in the party will follow into the lobby! (Unfortunately, exiting out to select another match type seems to cancel your party. You can always go back to the Party Invite menu to get the gang back together.)

Again, find Friend Codes and drop off your own at the official RetroActive forum thread. Play nice, and have fun!

289
I've decided to delay RetroActive one more week, because we still need to play more in order to do this game justice. We will be announcing 1-2 official online meet-up events on the front page of NWR and via social media. If you haven't already, add a Friend Code here and enter as many as possible from other users for a better community experience!

I think the lesson is that you shouldn't build an entire console around one hardware feature if all your best ideas to use that feature can be wrapped up in a single launch title that no one wants to buy at full price. The saddest part is that this lesson should have already been evident from Wii.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 379: RFN After Hours
« on: April 20, 2014, 11:53:25 PM »

A good friend joins us for the first time, even as Jonny exits halfway through. We still get to talk Mario, Milon, more Rusty, and answer your emails!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/37197/episode-379-rfn-after-hours

With Gui still on vacation in Boston, we finally bring on a good friend who somehow never did our show before this week -- Mr. Scott Thompson from NWR Connectivity! He goes off-topic immediately (in true RFN fashion) with Mercenary Kings on PS4, a game by the creators of another game involving Scott (Pilgrim), and this one pays homage to Metal Slug and Contra, with various modern twists. Somehow we also get on the topic of Jon's secret past as a game "developer" and his well-hidden credit in one of the biggest games of the past generation. Scott also brings us back to the topic of Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, now that most of us have played a lot more of the game. Final opinions are mixed, but there's no doubt it has been one of the most intriguing original releases from Nintendo in recent memory. Jon is still busy with his move and hasn't had time to play much, but he admirably supports New Business with a data integrity report on his refurbished 3DS, minus the cherished Milon's Secret Castle. He also leads us into a brief but fun discussion of Super Mario Bros. 3, now available on almost every Nintendo platform ever released. Jonny had to check out around this time due to illness, but James presses onward with his impressions of Half-Minute Hero 2 on Steam, which should appeal to many Japanese role-playing fans who'd like a faster-paced version of the familiar experience.

The three remaining crew members press on with three emails from listeners. First off the crew speculates on what DLC plans Nintendo has for the upcoming duo of Smash Bros. titles. Next up, a brave soul asks a crew of spurned former PAX panelists how to get a PAX panel. Lastly, the inevitable email comes: "Is the Wii U a bigger failure than the Virtual Boy."

Please keep feeding the RFN mail bag with your great questions and comments! Next week, we plan to discuss Goldeneye 007 (Wii) for our latest RetroActive feature, so be sure to play online with the NWR crew and your fellow readers/listeners by adding your code and meeting up for online matches in our handy forum thread. This game goes offline in just a few weeks, so take the opportunity now, while you still can!

Podcast Discussion / Episode 378: So I Mortgaged an Axe Murderer
« on: April 13, 2014, 10:35:11 PM »

We're joined by Developer/Podcaster Lewis Pugh and discuss Smash Bros. and Tomodachi Life on this loaded episode!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/37149/episode-378-so-i-mortgaged-an-axe-murderer

Since Guillaume is out at PAX East this weekend (unfortunately, without us), we've got a special guest: Lewis Pugh, the man behind Twisted Fusion on Kickstarter and also the host of Infendo Radio. He's come on a fun week, since we have two different Nintendo Directs about two very different games to be discussed. Jon sets us up right away for fresh thoughts on Tomodachi Life, and perhaps surprisingly, we're all intrigued by the latest in Nintendo's "WTF Japan" sub-brand. James follows that with Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, but his impressions soon ignite an unplanned, feature-level discussion about Nintendo's experimental approach to downloadable content. That doesn't leave much time left in New Business, but Jonny and Lewis do squeeze in some thoughts on Mario & Luigi: Superstart Saga and Advance Wars, respectively.

After the break, Lewis gives us a compelling pitch for his Wii U exclusive(!) game, Twisted Fusion. It's currently raising money on Kickstarter, so check out that page if the game sounds interesting. Next up is Listener Mail, and the opening salvo gives us an opening for reactions to all the new Smash Bros. announcements earlier in the week. We also lean on Lewis to explain Nintendo's HTML5 support and consider a listener's question about the upcoming indie avalanche on Wii U (and how anyone will know it's happening).

Let us know what you thought of the dual Directs, or any other topic, by supporting our Listener Mail segments with your own input! Also, listen to Lewis Pugh on the Infendo Radio podcast, and get ready for the next RetroActive by posting your Friend Code and finding opponents in the official Goldeneye 007 forum thread.

Having just listener back to the Yumi topic, my interpretation was that locking 80% of the levels behind a couple of extremely difficult secret exits was the target of his "bad game design" statement. Maybe he'll come here to clarify.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 377: When Fun Just Isn't Enough
« on: April 06, 2014, 08:26:27 PM »

A new platform on Virtual Console gives us the perfect excuse for a Game Boy Advance retrospective feature. Also: a Mario Kart Wii fanboy reacts to the latest MK8 info!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/37067/episode-377-when-fun-just-isnt-enough

Jonny's back in the hosting chair and ready for action this week! He launches into Yumi's Odd Odyssey and also returns to Batman Arkham Origins: Blackgate now that an expanded version is out for Wii U and other consoles. Guillaume continues to slog through Ace Attorney Investigations and also tries the ever-charming, ever-controversial Earthbound for the very first time! Jon is still waiting for his 3DS to come back, so he uses New Business to talk about the latest Mario Kart 8 details. Finally, James gets into Saints Row 4 and explains why it doesn't connect for him as much as the previous game.

After the break, we use the addition of Game Boy Advance titles to the Virtual Console (only on Wii U, at least for now) as a good excuse to look back at this odd era in Nintendo's handheld lineage. The panel's opinion of GBA as a platform is somewhat mixed, but we all agree that it has some wonderful games and a very colorful, if abbreviated, history. If you got into Nintendo during the Wii/DS boom or just somehow missed GBA in the early 2000s, you might be surprised to hear about the creativity and experimentation that did occur on a system that was and still is often associated with SNES ports. Try the links on our sidebar to the right for more info on some of our favorite titles mentioned in this episode!

Send in your own thoughts on GBA or any other topic for next week's Listener Mail segment! We're also pumped for some online thrills in Goldeneye 007 for Wii -- meet other players and arrange matches in the official RetroActive forum thread! The wrap-up discussion on our podcast will probably be coming up in the next couple of weeks.

I'll be doing that formally at least once or twice, but feel free to set up side-matches here. We need more code sharing first!

Tip: Your code can be found in Multiplayer > Party Invite. You'll also find the code entry for other people there.

TalkBack / Re: Yumi's Odd Odyssey Review
« on: April 05, 2014, 08:22:11 PM »
Neal's review is very fair, I think. There is a lot of potential fun in this game, if you're willing to spend a lot of time and patience learning how to play it. However, I also agree that it shouldn't take hours of no progress to learn these skills. The inaccessibility is a credible flaw, and the presentation is very poor considering the retail-tier pricing.

Where's the love for FF1-8? Is this sequel more focused on the later/lesser games in the series?
