TalkBack / Re: Sony Wishes to Work with Nintendo to Promote 3D
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:28:47 AM »
Aw, widdle Sony man is butt-hurt. He should make a better product.

3DS looks so much better than 3D TV or theater projection. It's not just the glasses, but that is a significant part of it.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive #13 Poll -- GBA Edition

KDR, I have no idea whether you're correct about the "derivative work" definition, but it is not illegal to possess or interact with a copyright-infringing product.

Edit: Here's a note from the translators' FAQ:

You guys rock. I wish I could help or donate or something!  The best way to show your support is to buy an actual copy of the   Japanese game, from here   or here   if possible, but places have been running out of stock lately, so it   might be too late now. If that’s not an option, buying the two MOTHER 3   soundtracks on iTunes or an   official MOTHER 3 shirt would be another cool way to show your   support. There’s always MOTHER   1+2, too. These are all tiny little ways to actually show Nintendo   your support for the series.

The prize is a copy of King of Clubs for Wii, signed by James Jones. We announced it a few episodes ago.

TalkBack / Re: MDK2 Coming to WiiWare
« on: June 28, 2010, 03:19:45 PM »
Remember that Animal Crossing fit into GameCube's RAM and could be played for hours with the lid open and disc removed. GameCube only had about 40MB of RAM (plus some for audio)... so maybe Animal Crossing could be put on WiiWare? Maybe this is also the explanation for the WiiWare size limit, which I've heard is related to hardware restrictions and is not as arbitrary or easy to fix as you might think.

Podcast Discussion / Re: RetroActive #13 Poll -- GBA Edition

Wait, you have Mother 3, a game you have to pirate to play in there but no Ninja Five-O? At least NFO can be bought legally and played.

Seriously, disqualify Mother 3, you can't legally get that game and play it in English.

If you want a game you can reasonably get take Boktai 1 or 2 (that had TONS of surplus stock in stores here so it should be easy to find cheaply), since most people haven't played that it'd probably be something interesting and new to delve into.

I want to respond to all three of your points. First, Ninja Five-O is prohibitively expensive to acquire in cartridge form, and as an action game, it is not well-suited for emulators. Otherwise, it would be the perfect game for RetroActive, but I have to consider availability.

Second, it is legal to import Mother 3 from Japan, and it is almost certainly legal to hack your own copy with an English translation patch, or else play through the game using a translation guide. Yes, I am aware that most people will not go to that much trouble and will take the easier route of piracy. While I do not condone any kind of piracy in general, I personally would not feel guilty about playing Mother 3 via emulation considering it has never been released outside Japan. If Nintendo ever releases it in the West, I will be first in line (well maybe second, after the Starmen fanatics) to pay for my own copy in English. We have seen no indication whatsoever that Nintendo has any intention of doing so. If my choice is between emulating a game or never playing it at all, I am willing to consider the former as a special case. I thought there might be enough RFN listeners who agree that it would be worthwhile including Mother 3 on this list. Of course, some people will disagree, and you are free to express that opinion through your vote as well as here in the comments. But I will not disqualify it from the poll. You are factually incorrect on these three key statements: you do NOT have to pirate the game, you CAN legally acquire the game, and you CAN legally play it in English.

On the subject of Boktai, I have long planned to include Lunar Knights in the DS poll and thus chose to omit its predecessors from the GBA poll.

This was very interesting to hear, though challenging since I was not at all familiar with the game. This is one of those situations where the website version of the feature could help provide context with a lot of screens and videos.

I really like the technical details, like cramming data into a tiny save   game file. Also, it's funny but understandable to hear a game's producer openly talk about playing the ROM on emulators.

Isn't Kirby usually a mind-numbingly easy game? And it's still your best Wii game of E3? Does that mean it was the most fun?

Kirby is immortal in Epic Yarn, but that doesn't necessarily mean the game will be easy. It feels much like Wario Land 2 and 3, not surprising since Kirby's developer (Good Feel) also made Wario Land: Shake It.

Attention ios4 and iPhone 4 users: I have uploaded a new version of the m4a file without AAC enhancements, which we think may be breaking compatibility in the new OS. Please re-download the AAC version and test it out. If it works, we'll do without enhancements until a work-around is available.

By the way, we are still finding a lot of small bugs, and Aaron will be working throughout today to address these. He's already had a long day and it's not over yet! Wish him luck!

The gang is back together to answer your burning E3-related questions and prepare for next week's bonanza.
                        http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/23553

Greg and Jon reunite with James and Jonny, the latter two still recovering from
E3. We nobly attempt to do a quick New Business, but discussions of late-game content in Galaxy 2 and the controversial Dead
Space: Extraction develop just the way you'd expect. There's even a jaunt into 3DS talk when Greg ponders the effect of a
3D display on platformers.

The longer second segment is all about your emails, with lots of E3 follow-ups. We
get into the Motion Control Warz, the true nature of Goldeneye, compatibility for PDP's Headbanger accessory, playing DS games
on 3DS, and even our forum avatars. The show ends with a plea for your submissions to next week's DS retrospective and a last
call for the Drunkcast Debacle contest. We also announce nominees for the GBA edition of RetroActive -- vote
now
!

We're always looking for great Listener Mail to read and discuss on the show, so please send
your questions or comments! (We really love seeing your praise and feedback regarding the show itself; however, in the interest
of time, we may edit your letter to be read on the podcast.)

DS game of E3 2010 would have to be Okamiden.

You clearly didn't play Okamiden. I hope the game will turn out well, but the demo was terrible.

Oh come on BnM, this is a nice gesture and easy for them to do since the Coins have no cash value. Paying launch prices means you don't have to wait two years to buy the system.

TalkBack / Re: GoldenEye Details Confirmed, Not a Remake
« on: June 25, 2010, 05:02:43 PM »
They aren't borrowing any game content or assets or anything else from the original game. Nintendo is complicit (to use Greg's term), but Activision is walking a fine line with this project. I guarantee Rare and thus Microsoft have legal claim to certain game assets that Activision has to carefully avoid.

1315
I can't wait to see this on Hulu tomorrow. Reggie should be on TV more often.

TalkBack / Re: GoldenEye Details Confirmed, Not a Remake
« on: June 25, 2010, 04:24:25 PM »
Activision is using every resource their license provides access to (the original movie content and current actors like Daniel Craig). They don't have any rights to the Rare game, so any resemblance must be (legally) due to shared ancestry with the film. I imagine a lot of the original game's developers are annoyed at the blatant aping of visual style and game design, but most of them no longer work at Rare, and there's nothing they can do unless Activision stupidly oversteps the line into copyright infringement, which would be fairly hard to prove with a licensed game such as this.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's Next Console May Employ 3D
« on: June 24, 2010, 12:55:47 PM »
So Nintendo's next system should have a built-in TV/monitor with an improved version of the 3DS screen technology. ;-)

If they're waiting for 3D television adoption to cross 30%, they're going to be waiting a long time.

1322
Wada stood near us for several minutes in the Nintendo booth. Wonder what he was checking out there?

1323
Goldeneye isn't even supporting Wii Speak (that could change, but I don't expect it to).

So right now, this is the Conduit 2 headset. They're going to have trouble convincing people to buy it for just one game. The patching idea seems far-fetched on the Wii, which isn't set up for game patching. I can see the original Conduit possibly be patched for the headset, but I wouldn't hold my breath for Monster Hunter, and it's out of the question for Nintendo titles like Animal Crossing and Endless Ocean 1/2. (Whoa, did I just name every Wii Speak game?)

I've checked both my local source files and the online versions (linked in the article above), and this episode appears in both. If you're still having trouble, please send a screenshot, XML file, or any other information you have so I can try to recreate and fix the problem.
