TalkBack / Re: Club Nintendo: Tips for Reaching Platinum Status

The Gold/Platinum awards may not be anything great, but these tips will also load up your account with coins that can be spent on other Club Nintendo rewards... which are also not anything great...

Glad to see something for VC, although I played Aero in the 90s and never liked it much. Waiting for some positive reviews on Dive.

Valkyrie isn't even a specific character in Norse mythology. I'm talking about Thor, Loki, Heimdall, Baldur, etc.

First and foremost, how will it meld with the set-list? I'm willing to bet that many of the songs chosen for Rock Band 3 have no keyboard piece, so what, will players be unable to use it in these songs? Or will they throw together a note chart to let you play keyboard in this songs? Or will they have to be extremely selective and only use songs with keyboard parts? That could be a problem.

I believe most of the RB3 on-disc songs will have keyboard parts. It's not yet clear what will happen with DLC -- whether future DLC will include keyboard when relevant, and whether past DLC can/will be updated for keyboard support. However, we do know that the keyboard can be used to play guitar/bass parts if desired, so technically, the controller is compatible with all Rock Band songs.

Quote
Secondly, this Pro mode... I can't wrap my head around how the game could keep up when the player is using a full-sized keyboard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, even when using every key, you still only see two octaves on screen at any given time. Well, suppose you're playing chords on one end of the keyboard and playing the melody way over on the other end at the same time -- how is the game going to show you all this?

The game interface only has two octaves, same as the game's keyboard controller. If you are playing with a full-length keyboard (through the MIDI adaptor), only two octaves on your keyboard would be active for the game. You can still play rhythm and melody, but they would be in adjacent octaves. This means that most keyboard parts in the game will not correlate exactly to playing the song outside the game, but in most cases, you should be able to simply transpose the left hand part to a different octave (the fingerings would be the same). Also, given how keyboard is utilized in most rock music, it's more likely that most of the keyboard parts will have no rhythm but will instead have the melody part straddling both of the available octaves.

In that case, the game should have some Norse mythology, a.k.a. the best mythology.

Jonny's back to lead discussion on a wide range of games, lots of emails from first-timers, and a preview of our Mother 3 blow-out in RetroActive.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/23747

After a week in soccer-crazy Spain, Jonny is back to resume hosting duties. He's also playing several games, including Dragon Quest IX and LIMBO. Jon gives us an update on New Super Mario Bros. Wii (a slow burn, to say the least); James wraps up Mega Man ZX and begins to torture himself with Tales of Vesperia. Finally, Greg catches up on some of his recent retro exploits, including R-Type Delta and Castlevania Chronicles. The first segment concludes with a fairly short start to the ongoing RetroActive feature, as the gang (minus Greg, temporarily) goes over first impressions and other thoughts on Mother 3. We'll be back in two weeks for the full treatment on this game, and meanwhile, you can leave your comments in the Mother 3 RetroActive forum thread.

Listener Mail is dominated by first-time writers, who we absolutely love to hear from! Questions and topics range from Rock Band's "Pro" mode to Wii HD (now with holograms). We also answer that eternal question: "Why doesn't Metroid ever take off his armor?"

Yeah, I told them that by holding it back, they were building it up too much. It's a funny story, but the way they were making it seem, you'd think Jonny and I got into a knife fight while Lindy, Sklens, and Neal shot pistols into the air.

I'm not really sure why they decided to not air it for everyone, either. We tell WAY worse stories on Rough Draught.

Also, for the record, it's not that Jonny is awkward with girls, it's that we were all pretty hammered. It's hard to be smooth when you're rocking a drunkard's limp.

It was one of those cases where it seemed funnier to censor it than to include it. I don't particularly care if people hear the story, but at this point, the denial is a joke with momentum.

For the record, I AM quite awkward with girls, but my behavior that night was more due to the vodka than my typical nature.

Sounds like they finished primary work on Aragorn's Quest and felt it was time to clean house. It's sad to hear about cuts at one of the few quality studios focusing on Wii. I hope the remaining crew is large enough to do another Geometry Wars.

The unfortunate thing about 2099 is that the comics had a short (three year) run in the mid-90s and have rarely been referenced in popular culture since that time. So even if you have been a devoted reader of Spider-Man comics for the past decade, you may not be familiar with the 2099 series.

My wallet already hurts. I'll get the MIDI adapter and use an existing keyboard, so at least I only need to buy the game itself at first. But eventually, I may well bite on that Fender guitar controller with real strings. I already have amps and would like to own an electric guitar, so if it can also be used for playing and learning guitar on RB3, that's a good investment.

I think this says that Nintendo needs to open up their service to homebrew (like XBL Community Games) since they obviously have low standards for quality.

They basically already have, which is exactly why the quality is so poor on WiiWare. The standard for becoming a licensed Wii developer are really low -- you need an office address and $2000 for a development kit. I don't think there are any upfront costs for submitting a WiiWare game to the Shop Channel, except for the ESRB rating fee, which is discounted for games that cost less than $25,000 to develop.

1287
I'm a huge fan of 2099 but will admit that it's pretty obscure. It's a very pleasant surprise to see it finally show up in a video game. I hope Shattered Dimensions performs well and Activision considers doing a full 2099 game. I saw this game at E3, by the way, but the demo was very short and the developers were being coy with all my probing questions.

I can only assume that the original Japanese text has (their version of) cursing, and the localization group tried to translate those parts literally. Based on what I've read about the localization effort, it seems unlikely they would add disparate elements like that. But I do agree that a Treehouse localization would probably omit or reduce the strength of any such language.

Great episode, guys. I hate to miss a week, but you carried on fine.

I can see 3DS being $250 but only if it includes a game (not just demos), like Wii and Wii Sports. Otherwise, $200 is the natural limit based on the target demographic. Ultimately, it all comes down to the component parts and how low Nintendo can negotiate those prices from the various manufacturers. They aren't going to take a loss on the system, so the launch price may have little to do with consumer-level market forces or historical trends.

And by the way, we are unfortunately not going to have a panel at this year's PAX Prime. I applied for one, but we didn't make it onto the schedule. We'll try again next spring for PAX East and keep trying thereafter, because it was a great experience. There will probably be a few NWR staff members attending PAX for media coverage and personal pleasure, so maybe you should start a PAX meet-up thread to coordinate all of that. I don't know who is planning to go, but I cannot justify the travel without some kind of official function. (I've already traveled too much this summer!)

his change had an effect on current video games, since Al Michaels' move   to NBC allowed Disney to reacquire the rights to Walt Disney's original   creation, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who is the villain in Disney Epic   Mickey.

Is this some kind of obscure football joke? What in the world would Al Michaels have to do with Oswald the Rabbit?

Yes, if you have comments regarding the game's release, or lack thereof, or the legitimacy of playing it one way or another, please feel free to create your own thread elsewhere in the forums. I would like this one to stay on-topic with the game itself, because it could easily be derailed and overwhelmed by meta-controversies.

I just started playing Mother 3 myself, and it may be a few more days before I've seen enough to organize my thoughts. First impressions are very good, though!

We take it a little easier this week and read some of your favorite DS memories.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/23664

It's a three-man show this week, as Jon got held up announcing his move to Miami on live television. We had planned for a light episode anyway, and that's what you'll get. New Business is all over the place, with Trauma Team, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor, Endless Ocean: Blue World, Super Stardust HD, and Joe Danger.

Part two is mostly your DS anecdotes, which we read and provide some commentary on. We also answer one question about Tiger Woods, MotionPlus, and our perceived apathy towards sports (or at least sports video games).

Our next RetroActive discussion has started - head into our forum thread for Mother 3 to contribute your thoughts on the game for a future episode of RFN!

It was pretty much never close.

At one point within the first couple days of the poll (during which about 50% of the total votes were cast), Mario Tennis was winning by one or two votes. After that, Mother 3 pulled ahead and kept increasing its lead. My blog post brought in a dozen or so extra votes, but the trends didn't change.

TalkBack / Celebrate Democracy: RetroActive #13 Poll
« on: July 06, 2010, 04:30:51 PM »

Which GBA game will we play and discuss with listeners on Radio Free Nintendo?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/23622

There are only a few days left to vote in the RetroActive: GBA Edition poll! Voting ends mid-day on Thursday, July 8, so act now! Anyone registered in our forums is eligible to vote.

Vote now!

If you're wondering what RetroActive is, read on. We started this feature in early 2009 as a way for the Radio Free Nintendo crew to play a game together and discuss it on the podcast. It's also an excuse to play older games we might have missed, and to enhance listener interaction.

The idea is pretty simple: we come up with a list of nominees, and you vote for which one to be played. Whichever game wins the poll, the RFN crew will play it and devote at least one podcast segment to discussing the game. We also highly encourage our listeners to play the game and discuss it with us and each other in a special forum thread. The best comments from that thread will be read on the show to help spur the discussion.

This is our 13th RetroActive; the last few have focused on particular platforms, and this one is devoted to Game Boy Advance. Be sure to check past episodes of RFN to hear us discuss the listeners' choice games for NES, Genesis, Game Boy, and more. And if your favorite game doesn't win this time, it may come around again in our next Second Chance poll.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 200: Up Where We Belong
« on: July 04, 2010, 08:46:45 PM »

We celebrate four years and 200 episodes with a gigantic discussion of Nintendo DS and how it rose to dominance.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/23611

For this special anniversary episode, we skipped special guests, clip reels, and sappy remembrances. Instead, we decided to celebrate six years of Nintendo DS, on the eve of its true successor (or the fourth pillar?), the Nintendo 3DS.

Even our New Business segment is DS-centric. Jonny's addicted to Puzzle Quest 2, while Jon dusts off his DSi for X-Scape. Greg catches up with Jam with the Band, mysteriously released in Europe after years as a popular import. James wraps it up with Mega Man Zero Collection but also sneaks in a PC game with Tropico 3, which he describes as a sociopathic version of Sim City.

The lopsided conclusion is our feature topic, outlined and navigated by Mr. Leahy. Greg takes us through the early DS announcements, the playable debut at E3 2004, and the American-led launch (full of third-party titles, oddly). We each discuss the moments in 2005/2006 when we realized that DS might actually deliver on Nintendo's wild ambitions. And we ponder the larger significance and ubiquity of this tiny gaming system -- how it has affected our lives, our gaming habits, and the entire industry. It's a sweeping feature on an even bigger topic, but we covered as much as possible! Please send in your personal DS stories and comments on the feature, to be read on a future episode.

Finally, don't forget that the RetroActive: GBA Edition poll is ongoing and highly contested! Make your voice heard by voting before Thursday's deadline.

If the staff wants to play and chat about Mother 3, they should find some other excuse to do so. RetroActive is a community-driven feature and should serve it as best it can.

This is why we have a poll! The people will decide whether this game is a worthy nominee.
