This is a PR nightmare. The average dumbass holiday shopper may still buy the Wii version for $50, but gamers will not. It just breeds contempt for the company, of which EA could already use less.

Not sure if you're trolling Heavy Rain, but Other M's writing is much worse.

Good interview. Thanks for the translation! I love Sakamoto and hope he continues to direct/produce the Metroid series (while handing writing duties over to someone else).

I sucked hard on this episode, even missed a couple of games that I have played a lot. Still had a good time listening!

TalkBack / Like Hudson's Lost in Shadow, Support Child's Play
« on: September 03, 2010, 02:20:01 PM »

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/23971

Lost in Shadow, a Wii-exclusive puzzle/platformer from Hudson Soft, is looking like one of the coolest games coming out this fall. Now you can show your interest by "liking" the game's fan page on Facebook... and for each person who does, Hudson will donate ten cents to Child's Play Charity. Doesn't sound like much, but with over 1,000 fans already active, it means hundreds of dollars are already on the table. There's also a contest for anyone who likes the page and changes their profile picture to something with a lot of shadows in it... check out the link for details, and be sure to like the page while you're there to help a great charity!

While you're at Facebook, make sure you're a fan of Radio Free Nintendo.

If you want to learn more about Lost in Shadow, just click the game link on the right side of this blog. To learn more about Child's Play, listen to my interview with Mike Krahulik (Penny Arcade's "Gabe") about the charity on this old episode of RFN.

It should stand out more in the spring, although I'm worried it could get lost in the 3DS launch window. This game is cool as hell and should be getting more attention. We are hoping to do an interview with the developers soon...

I'd like to to see how it looks, though I suppose the obvious answer would be that it will be running on the same engine as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, so chances are that the remakes will be in the pre-rendered style of that game.

That is not at all the obvious answer, and in fact there is no chance these games are being reskinned with 3D visuals at this price point. Also, there is nothing pre-rendered about NSMB Wii. It's all rendered in real-time, including the backgrounds.

Kytim and Jonny, how is $30 full price?
Sorry, I didn't see the price info before I posted. $30 is still not worth it for me, but it makes more sense for the marketplace.

Mario 1: $5
Mario 2: $5
Mario 3: $5
Mario World: $8
Mario Lost levels: $6
=
$29

I already have tons mario songs on my ipod
Maybe if they include mario land 1+2 with updated graphics and music that would be cool.

Super Mario All-Stars: $8 (if we're going with standard Virtual Console prices)

Also, I don't think it's clear yet whether Super Mario World will be included in this version. As others have said, it depends on which edition of All-Stars is used.

If this is literally Super Mario All-Stars on a disc, then no thank you. I'm not paying full price for a ROM and a soundtrack disc.

TalkBack / Re: Metroid: Other M Review
« on: September 01, 2010, 01:20:33 AM »
These pixel hunts are driving me nuts. They are the only truly excruciating thing about the game so far. The writing and voices are on par with typical video game production, meaning they are bad, but not any worse than we're used to. The difference here, I think, is that Metroid has usually avoided these problems, while Other M embraces mediocre video game storytelling. The really weird thing is that it could have and should have been saved in localization. Most of the really terrible writing is in Samus's narration and during CG movies, when there is no lip-synching. So the Treehouse could have cleaned up most of Sakamoto's script -- either they chose not to, or they actually made it worse. In particular, Samus uses about twice as many words as necessary to say anything, and the whole game has a tendency to tell rather than show, or worse, explain what's going on even as the visuals have already made it perfectly clear. It's really, really bad writing.

You can train your neurovestibular system to better tolerate shaky cameras and other visual perturbations, but I can't imagine the training would be very pleasant.

Correction: I mentioned "Chaos Legion" as the Compile shooter released on GameCube. The actual title is Chaos Field, and I have now tagged both it and Radio Allergy in the article in case you want to read more about them.

« on: August 25, 2010, 12:47:39 PM »
I think a big part of UMD's demise as a move format was that it would usually be more expensive than the DVD versions while also usually lacking most of the special features.

Those same problems would almost certainly apply to cartridge-based 3DS movies as well. The physical medium has less storage and is more expensive than discs.

I have come to place little or no importance on the concept of "replay value" for that exact reason.

The problem with selling movies on game cards is that they will compete with actual games for shelf space. This was a HUGE problem for PSP movies and that, combined with consumer confusion about the format, led to the format's demise. Using physical media also means the movies cost a lot more to distribute, so the final price will be higher. Despite the appeal of 3D, most people would not be willing to buy a movie that only plays on 3DS, for the same price as a DVD or Blu-Ray. And by the way, DVD sales are plummeting (Blu-Ray sales have never been huge), so there is evidence that people just don't want to buy physical movies anymore. There are too many alternatives that cost less and offer easier access.

There's a demo on Nintendo Channel, which I didn't like much. Seems like a neat idea, but the controls are frustrating.

So much weird crap there. I can't believe the Donkey Kong G&W sold 6 million units. The whole Game & Watch phenomenon was before my time, so I have no perception of how big it was.

Ufouria is very good; I'll be talking about it on the next RFN, for sure.

If I ever buy And Yet It Moves, it'll probably be for PC where it costs less... unless the Wii controls somehow add to the game.
