TalkBack / Re: 3DS Processor and Memory Details Leaked
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:36:56 PM »
Dedicated GPU is a big upgrade from DS. Having 64MB of RAM is probably a good amount for the screens' resolution, although developers always want more. Out of that 1.5GB flash memory, I would bet around 1GB will be available to the user, with the rest allocated for firmware and built-in apps. Huge improvement over DSi, but the SD card needs to be better supported.

I almost forgot, why isn't Superman 64 on the poll? I nominated it a while back, I'm pretty sure at least one other person backed it. Did you think it was a joke response? With the amount of garbage games released on the Wii, it would be a more relevant discussion than it would seem.

It's true that multiple people have nominated Superman 64. However, it is a universally loathed game. I've played it myself and can confirm that it's absolute garbage. It can be funny to laugh at in a B-movie kind of way, but YouTube is just as good for that and costs nothing. I can't imagine discussing the game for more than a couple of minutes; it has virtually no redeeming qualities.

This is rather disappointing, since I loved the same developer's work on Web of Shadows (DS). Have you played that one, Neal? This is probably too esoteric for the review, but I'd like to hear some specific comparisons between the two games if possible.

With over a week left, this RetroActive already has more votes than any previous poll. Always a good sign. I think participation will continue to set new records as we play and discuss the winner.

Yeah, it's too late for Conker. I'll consider it for a future poll, though.

Mop, good info on the censorship. The remake's online multiplayer would not longer function because Microsoft has disabled the original Xbox Live service in order to upgrade the 360 version. It's too bad they dumped the N64 multiplayer features -- "Beach" is an all-time favorite, even if you're only playing against the computer.

I didn't know the Xbox version of Conker was censored.  That game was actually on my list of games to acquire sometime to play now that I have a 360, but now I'm not so sure.

Check the backwards-compatibility list; for some reason, I seem to remember that Conker was never supported.

Regarding Yoshi vs. Kirby: it's true that I wanted a nice spread of different genres. I have played Kirby 64 at least twice and talked about it during New Business on an old episode (when it first came to VC). I like the game a good bit, but it's ultimately very similar to other Kirby games. Yoshi's Story has always seemed like a unique experiment from Nintendo, and the graphical style makes it perhaps just as pertinent to the upcoming release of Epic Yarn as Kirby 64 would be.

Conker would have been a good choice for the poll. Unfortunately, I think the Xbox remake is significantly different in a number of ways... including being more censored than the original, for some insane reason.

I don't know if it's worthwhile to make a new Sin & Punishment for 3DS when we're already getting Kid Icarus.

« on: September 17, 2010, 11:31:15 AM »
Notes:

Yoshi's Story, Wave Race 64, and Ogre Battle 64 are available on Virtual Console in every region.
Banjo-Tooie and Perfect Dark have faithful HD remakes available on Xbox Live Arcade.
Of course, N64 cartridges are also great if you have access to them.
Please vote for the game you think is most interesting and/or that you would most like to play along if it wins.

VOTING ENDS ON THE MORNING OF THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30!

I guessed the easy ones, #2 and #4. But I have played #5 and really enjoyed it as a kid! No reason for that to be missing from Virtual Console along with other games like Adventure Island 3.

Why is the campaign still hands-off in September? I was really impressed by the dam level demo at E3, but we need to play it for ourselves to get a handle on the mission flow, A.I., etc.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 210: An Unhealthy Obsession
« on: September 12, 2010, 02:06:41 AM »

Can you handle an entire episode devoted to Metroid?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/24007/episode-210-an-unhealthy-obsession

Way back on Episode 47 of this little podcast, Jonny discovered that he might like Metroid more than the average gamer. He felt alone, alienated... special. Since that time (2007!), Jonny has learned that there are a few others like him, including Greg and Zach, who appear on this special Other M follow-up episode. If you just can't get enough of our zealous enthusiasm for Metroid (last showcased in the RetroActive discussion of Metroid II on Episode 193), this episode delivers over an hour of Metroid and nothing but.

We dive deep into spoiler territory on Other M, compare it to virtually every other game in the franchise, and speculate on where the series should go next. It's all Metroid, all the time on this week's RFN! We'll be back next week with the full crew and lots of non-Metroid games to talk about.

Note: following the initial spoiler warning, rejoin the discussion at 51:38 if you wish to avoid specifics of the late-game story and gameplay.

You could argue that for the slide bar, but it was two years and two games ago. The new GH6 guitar actually ditches the slide bar and is just a very slim and lightweight version of the standard five-button controller.

No one wants to buy these things 2 or 3 times a year.  No one wants band-specific games.  No one wants incremental changes made that makes their existing instruments obsolete.
Activision is leaving all of those things behind and is now focusing on a single Guitar Hero game per year that doesn't require new instruments. Also, they've never made any instruments obsolete. You can play with any instrument in any game as long as it's on the same console. The same goes for Rock Band with trivial exceptions.

No one wants cameos from famous rockstars or this goofy transformation.
I personally don't care for the style of GH6, but at least it's a distinct style that the franchise can call its own. And these things have little impact on the game itself. You can after all go straight to Quick Play and avoid the story/character junk.

Go Mario! Especially great to see Galaxy 2 doing well month after month, after the first one sagged in N. America.

It will be very interesting to see if Metroid cracks the Top 10 for September. It was released after the reporting period for August (which ended 8/28).

« on: September 10, 2010, 02:14:02 AM »
I'm still playing Mother 3 and have put in quite a lot of time into it these past few days. I finally finished Chapter 7, which felt extremely long, and am now in New Pork City. No idea how much is left, but I have an open reservation with Neal to discuss the end-game stuff and bring in some of the spoiler comments from this thread on an upcoming RFN segment. The only obstacle right now is finishing the game!

Dunno how they are doing it, but disc import is an awesome feature and it's great that Wii gamers can now use it too. Hopefully I will be able to import both RB1 and RB2 songs into my X360 version of RB3.

Does Mario Strikers Charged really run at 60FPS online?  When I tried it back when it launched, it was barely playable.
Well, it has a refresh rate of 60FPS, but certain stadiums have slowdown. When I played it, I didn't notice it running any less smoothly than offline, but this was far after launch, so there were less people playing. Though you also might have run into people with poor connections.

Nintendo WFC is a peer-to-peer matching service, so the quality of online connections should not be related to how much time has passed (or how many people are playing at that time).
