Nintendo Gaming / Just buy Sega already!
« on: May 24, 2003, 07:33:01 AM »
Sega's two biggest development teams are the Sonic Team (who, obviously, make more than just Sonic) and AM2 (Yu Suzuki's crew; fighting, Shenmue, and everything in between).  Amusement Visison and the Sonic Team are the only teams who express love for the Gamecube.  Yuji Naka was apparently very annoyed that Sonic Heroes would have to be multi-platform, a decision that no doubt came from the higher ups.  Amusement Vision is tied in to the Triforce and are the main (pardon the pun) "force" behind the new F-Zero.  Of course, they're also responsible for Monkey Ball.  Yu Suzuki, however, has always expressed his disinterest in the Gamecube.  When asked once whether or not Virtua Fighter would ever appear on Gamecube, he remarked "I don't think it would work well for the Gamecube's image.  Maybe Virtua Fighter Kids."  Sega eventually committed him to Virtua Fighter Quest, a game that has mysteriously vanished off the radar in the last year.

Second parties tend to not get treated well by Nintendo.  If Nintendo were to buy Sega, they'd pretty much lose all independence as a company and become assimilated in to Nintendo.  Granted, this would be the same thing if they were bought by Sony or Microsoft, so they stay as a third party.  Nintendo likes to check in on second parties and often tinker with their games if they think it's not going well.  Those of us who are old enough to remember can recall a time when Nintendo did this to third parties and ended up pissing a lot of companies off.  All of Nintendo's current second parties never started off as big companies, so they are happy working with Nintendo to make games and such.  After all, if you made Metroid Prime or Eternal Darkness, you'd be pretty damn happy with yourself.  Imagine for a second that your the creator of, say, Jet Set Radio.  You had this great idea, and all of a sudden, Miyamoto busts in (with a banjo simply because I always picture him with a banjo in his hand) and tells you what tweaks to make to the game.  If you're a young and aspiring game developer, this would be the greatest experience of your life.  If you're a seasoned veteran, not even Miyamoto should be allowed to tell you what to do (from your point of view, of course; though, I do have an inkling that the Holy Father of Gaming is going insane now).  Plus, Sega is making more money as a third party than they were as a hardware manufacturer.  Nintendo doesn't want to buy them, Sega doesn't want to be bought.  It works out well.

Now if only we could just convince them to give us some exclusives...

Do I win anything?

A couple of points real quick.  I am pretty sure Nintendo meant series, making some of those non-exclusive.  Also, FFXI isn't confirmed to be exclusive yet.  A PC port is more than likely.

I love how everyone can complain that Nintendo needs to change their business practices while deriding "sinking down to Microsoft and Sony's level" (the fact that Microsoft's "level" would be listing Metroid Prime off as an XBox exclusive game on their website notwithstanding).  The thing is, if Nintendo took this to TV, it probably would be considered better in the eyes of casual gamers.

..or we could go back to two guys on a couch rapping about Link, and I don't think anyone wants that.

Nintendo Gaming / 3rd Party Characters in 1st Party Games?
« on: May 05, 2003, 01:12:23 PM »
Well, Miyamoto would only allow it in games that aren't his "favorite children", if you know what I mean.  Sonic in Mario Kart?  Maybe.  Simon Belmont in Zelda?  Don't hold your breath.  Mega Man in Mario?  Not a chance.

Would it be possible to port Paper Mario to GBA?  THAT would be amazing.

I have SMRPG on cart, but I'd probably buy it again.

Nintendo Gaming / Pokemon Box
« on: April 15, 2003, 04:37:28 PM »
I would have gotten the game if it were actually Pokemon Stadium 4.  I definitely would have gotten the game were it a 3D RPG.  Since it's only Box operations (which are cool enough on the game, in my opinon)...is there really any point?

No, no there's not.

I hope there is more to the game than organization.

Nintendo Gaming / No wonder M titles aren't selling
« on: April 15, 2003, 03:04:07 PM »
Well, I work(ed) at Rhino, and we always get shipments of M rated GC games.  They're usually on par with the number of XBox and PS2 copies.  However, and I speak only of my store, the managers often make decisions based on their own biases.  My manager actually went on the XBox Live retreat some time ago!  He, at one point, refused to give shelf space to Metroid Prime and to only sell it on request basis.  When he declined to give Zelda more shelf space than GTA3 (which has not sold a copy in months), I decided to quit.  I now have a job at Sam Goody, which is just as bad, honestly.  Our manager replaced our Gamecube kiosk with a second PS2 display.  The Gamecube games aren't even on the walls with the rest of the games, but are instead beside the Anime DVDs.  Turns a lot of casual gamers off to "Gamecube kiddy games" and "cartoons" next to eachother.  Kind of pisses me off, actually, as some of those movies/games would change their views.

In any case, Nintendo reps were always in and out of Rhino.  However, they always gave advance notice and our manager would always put up a Nintendo display that would put the "World Of Nintendo" from the 80's to shame.  They should make unannounced visits, I think.

Nintendo Gaming / Pokemon for someone who hates Pokemon?
« on: April 13, 2003, 09:20:32 AM »
I'm still stuck at the fourth member of the Elite Four.  He rips me a new one, and I even have Groudon in my party. >_<

I thought the game was quite challenging.  If you're not prepared for a certain trainer or so, then you can easily be wiped out.  Your two rivals in this game (one of them invariably takes Ralts as his starting Pokemon) are very predictable, though.  The gym leaders do not cause too much pain, although the Psychic gym is a bitch.  In any case, in the past few games, you could feasibly win without playing elemental "strategery".  If you had a high enough level (even by three or four), you could kick major ass against many Pokemon in the older ones (even Crystal).  However, if you don't mix and match attacks and elements, then you've got no chance in this game.

Also, my Pokemon are seemingly too retarded to ever fight through confusion and only have Paralysis effects when the battle ABSOLUTELY HINGES ON IT!

I love how the most advertised XBox game was Blinx The Cat.

Which, obviously, is SO much more mature than Zelda. >_<

Nintendo Gaming / Mini-games in Modern Games are Boring

SPLISH.

I like Zelda's minigames.  The fights with Orca were insanely fun, if not very difficult.

Nintendo Gaming / island games....
« on: April 02, 2003, 02:57:47 PM »
Miyamoto is sending a clear message to Nintendo: "I need a damn vacation."

Luigi's Mansion is about Luigi winning a vacation mansion, not anywhere he lives.  Pikmin's about a guy crash-landing on a planet.  Animal Crossing is just a virtual vacation.  It's certainly changed from the old formulas of defending the homeland.

Nintendo Gaming / question about mario sunshine and zelda?
« on: April 01, 2003, 10:52:44 AM »
I would rather not anyone in those games speak their text.

Also, Mario Sunshine does indeed have full voice acting, except for things like villagers and such.  FMV sequences have voices, but regular gameplay has text because it would be annoying to listen to their jabbering all the time.  I was very dissapointed with Bowser's voice.  Wasn't how I imagined him at all.

Link doesn't talk, anyway.  He's a silent hero, like Crono or Serge.

Nintendo Gaming / SSB3!! IS IT IN THE WORKS?
« on: March 28, 2003, 01:44:02 AM »
Online play right now would be the worst idea ever.

Fighting games online are so much more difficult than racing games.  Especially a game like Super Smash Bros.  In a racing game, the only data that needs to be transferred is your racer, his/her position, his/her speed, and what item they're carrying.  In a fighting game, every single polygon of data must be established (where it begins, where it ends, at which point it connects), in addition to the fact that the slightest lag would kill the fun.

What do I want to see?  An Arcade SSB:M, with memory card capabilities not unlike F-Zero.

Nintendo Gaming / SSB3!! IS IT IN THE WORKS?
« on: March 27, 2003, 01:58:19 PM »
Well, SSB:M was one of the best/fastest selling Gamecube games and certainly one of the most critically acclaimed.  I'm just worried that HAL has nothing to improve on anymore.  I mean, once you hit the top, it's a lot faster to just fall down.

Well, the encouraging part is that many people bought Fusion, so maybe they'll be wooed by the connectivity aspect?

Fusion is Japan's third best selling handheld game (behind FFTA and Pokemon R/S), isn't it?

Rumors are flying concerning a possible conversion of a Mario RPG game to GBA.  I'm praying that it's Paper Mario, just because I want to see it work on the GBA and hear Nokia say "Damn..."

Nintendo Gaming / Europe GBA SP Ad
« on: March 04, 2003, 04:01:20 PM »
Do you not remember Europe's GBA ad?

A guy was sleeping naked when his roommate and his one-night stand woman come in to the room.  Knowing his friend is going to get lucky and despise him forever if he prevented it, he runs out to the balcony.  You see vague sillouhettes of the woman on top of the guy, and then you hear her say "Have any mates that want to join in?"

The naked guy develops a smile and comes running in to the room.  He has a look of shock on his face when he sees the two fully-clothed lovers playing Mario Kart.  The tag line was "If he had a GBA, he wouldn't have to blame the cold."

Ah, NOE.  They're the best.

« on: March 04, 2003, 03:56:58 PM »
Konami does this a lot.  You can rarely find a new game as they're talking about their next game.  Aria of Sorrow is only a few weeks away, isn't it?

Go ahead, try and find MGS: Substance for XBox when the PS2 version is about to come out (unless it's already out, then you'll have to wait for the GC version).

Nintendo Gaming / New Zelda Look
« on: March 03, 2003, 02:10:46 PM »
So, you want the series to grow stale, like Final Fantasy?

Miyamoto did what he needed to in order to keep the series alive.  Ocarina of Time II is not something anyone would appreciate.  If we had a realistic Zelda, these same people would be in here complaining that Nintendo has no new tricks.
