Just out of curiosity, who kept buying those Army Men games to warrant them making more?

When has Nintendo ever really shafted a character? Donkey Kong, missing since the arcade shows up on the SNES. Samus, not seen since the SNES now rejoins us. Even the Ice Climbers showed up in Smash Bros. Not to mention the E-Reader...

Nintendo Gaming / Celda 2?
« on: May 29, 2003, 11:40:03 AM »
You're about a month behind everyone else.  No, Capcom has no "mature" Zelda in the works.  The rumored Capcom games turned out to be Four Swords and Tetra's Trackers.  Miyamoto has never said that he wanted to use a game using Soul Calibur II-type graphics.  Even if he did, the next Zelda is a Wind Waker (NOT CELDA) sequel, thus Aounuma's game.  Aounuma (I doubt I'm spelling that right) has said it will use the same graphics system as Wind Waker.  He also mentioned that a realisitic Zelda does not appeal to him and takes away the fantasy that Zelda is known for.

So, sorry if you got your hopes up for some sort of crazy dark Zelda game.  I guess the rest of us will just have to settle with great gameplay and amazing animation.

My best guess on Camelot's activities is a new Shining Force game.  They were always the major "force" behind the series, it was just Sega's license.  Sega's already announced a new Shining Force and I don't think anyone would be dissapointed if Camelot were doing it again.

I am going to reread that post one more time and pray to God you did not just say Mario was a kiddy franchise.  You better have meant that it might be perceived as such (by stupid people).

You guys misunderstand.  I don't mean to say there shouldn't be new mascots or that I'm worried that the old ones will be replaced.  I was saying that Nintendo has been fortunate thus far in creating recognizable mascots.  They created most of these guys when they had almost total market share (and Pokemon was created during a GB Monopoly which, so far, hasn't ended).  There wasn't really any competition, so they could experiment all they wanted.  Now, they're facing heavy competition, and one error could cost them dearly.  Mascots are not easy things to simply push on to the public.

Take Sony, for instance.  They really tried to push Crash, and it worked for a while.  Then, eventually, people got tired of him.  Now, you could argue that this won't happen to Nintendo, because they keep their licenses strong with good games.  If people don't accept them to start with, though, there's really no point.  Plus, when given the choice of a Mario game or New Mascot Game X, most people will choose Mario.  Of course, Nintendo won't put them in direct competition, but it's a small scale version of what could really happen on a fanboy level.  Because Nintendo won't put them in direct competition, we could be getting mascots we don't like in place of a new Mario or Zelda come any given Christmas.  Nintendo has a habit of pushing something until they are hit on the head with a mallet that it does not work.  Who's to say that public disinterest will not cause something even more unwanted?

Of course, this could all be a moot point if they come up with a super ingenious license that appeals to everyone (again).  However, what business in the world is that lucky?

Lincoln doesn't work for Nintendo anymore.

In any case, an actual anime series is seeming somewhat likely at this point.  The creator of the manga (which, from what I hear, is being published and sold in Japan and is on Metroid's Japanese site) has expressed interesting in making a "Metroid Origins" TV Show.  I wouldn't get your hopes up too high, though.  Many manga-ka want to turn their creations in to anime, but most don't succeed.  Nintendo would certainly have the clout to make one (or have someone else make one), but I don't think Metroid is a big enough property in Japan for it to make a difference.  Who knows?  Maybe Fusion's sales might have made a dent in NCL's anti-Metroid demeanor.

How much you want to bet that she's not going to wear her full suit in the movie?  They are so going to "Tomb Raider" this, but no one cared about Tomb Raider to begin with.

Iwata has promised a lot of crazy things during his tenure thus far and has usually not lived up to expectations.  I think he overhypes too much and is more worried about the "now" than the "later".  But, off the subject of Iwata, and let us hear how an old-school gamer feels about this.

I, personally, don't like the idea of Nintendo pushing a new mascot.  Super Smash Bros. Melee has shown that Nintendo's franchises are key to its success.  Not many casual gamers will recognize Miyamoto's name on a game like a casual moviegoer would recognize "Spielberg" or "Lucas" attached to a movie.  People recognize names like "Mario" or "Link".

Do you think Mario Party would have sold as well if it were just "Party"?

It will take years for Nintendo to build up a new mascot.  Nintendo has been VERY fortunate in establishing its mascots (Sega was only successful with Sonic, Sony and Microsoft have both had failed attempts) and I don't think now is the time when it should be taking focus away from what works.  Plus, there's the "Nintendo Fanboy" perspective.  A lot of us grew up with Mario and would not take kindly to a new, hipper mascot (in the vain of Crash or Bug?...hah!).  Iwata damn well better know what he's doing, because he could be making a huge mistake here.

That's like saying "I don't consider Baseball a real sport," or "The PS2 has a DVD player, thus making it
not a video game machine."  While they're your opinions, if you speak them in public, you will get ridiculed.  Similar to what I'm doing now, but I'm in a good mood.  Explain to me how SSB:M is any different from Power Stone?  Because it's not from Capcom?

Here's the way I see it:

1. Creators say "Hey, let's make a fighting game!"
2. Fighting game is made.
3. No one says "Dude, that's not a fighting game."
4. Everyone is happy!

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid: Prime lock up problem
« on: May 26, 2003, 11:22:46 AM »
I had a huge problem with the game freezing in the elevator between the ruins and Tallon Overworld.  It happened the a lot for two or three days, but it stopped the day I said "If it freezes again, I'm calling Nintendo."  Apparently threatening the Gamecube works.

Oh, just a small shout-out to N's customer service.  Whe Rogue Leader froze on me (every time), I called the Nintendo hotline to find out what the problem is.  They said for me to ship them my games, system, controllers, and memory cards to see if it happened to anything else.  I was really pissed off when they said it would take a month for it all to work.  So I packed it up, sent it, and waited.  Five days later, I got a package with brand new copies of games, new controllers, and a brand spankin' new Gamecube.  The letter with it said that the problem was with the Gamecube and some discs were scratched during the experimental process, so they sent me brand new stuff to compensate.  My memory cards came back a week later.  So, go N.  This is much better than Sony's "customer service".

Its elite pirate body parts, not kraid.  I doubt that Kraid can even leave zebes.

Except the scan data (I went back and checked) said he died on Zebes.  I don't recall fighting any Elite Pirates in Metroid 1.  Also, Kraid was quite small (roughly a few feet taller than Samus) in Metroid 1.  I assume he got pumped full of Phazon like everything else in the Space Pirate army and grew humongous.

...or is Kraid indigenous to Zebes?  Maybe there's more than one?  There are Kraid babies in Super Metroid...

It's great.  It's like Game & Watch on speed. ^_^

One level's set of mini-games are old references to Nintendo games.  You have to complete a task before time runs out.  Like, you're tossed in to the final battle with Mother Brain from Metroid 1 and have to beat her quickly.  Another one is you're Mario and have to kill all the goombas before the clock reaches zero.  All the graphics for that level are 8-bit ('cept F-Zero's minigame), so it's a great blast to the past.

It's gaming for those with extreme ADD.

Here's a frightening thought:

Would a Metroid remake contain...a story?!

I really hope that Giant Kraid isn't the real Kraid.  The Kraid boss battle from the original Metroid should be left as is.  I hated Giant Kraid from Super Metroid.  Speaking of Kraid, did anyone else notice what was unmistakably Kraid's hand with a bunch of other unidentifiable body parts in a tube in the research lab of Metroid Prime?  The scan data said something about rebuilding him as a Super Solider, like Ridley.  If that was the plan, then they failed miserably.  All these pirates ever want to do is make things bigger and they just end up dying faster.

Well, one problem with fighting games is that developers tend not to know what to do with the C-Stick.  If it's a port, then they turn it in to an automatic special move, which is just annoying.  Developers also don't like dealing with the Z-trigger and its awkward placement.  The cube controller was just not made with fighters in mind.  I mean, developers can work around it.  HAL used the Cube controller to its fullest extent with Smash Bros. Melee (despite the cheap, and might I add, un-switch-offable C-Smash) by keeping the controllers relatively simple.

The PS2 right now has the best controller for fighters.  It has the most buttons, unintrusive right analog stick, and a good D-Pad.  It has the best default controller for fighting games, but there are plenty of unofficial controllers for fighters that are superior.

As for me?  I like fighting games.  I, however, tend to play games alone, and fighting games wear out awfully quickly alone.

* Looks left. Looks right. Runs *
Muwahahahahahaha.

How did it get stolen? Did you just leave your backpack in the middle of nowhere ?

There's the thing.  It could have been taken many ways.  See, I put my SP in the front pocket of my backpack.  That pack has two chambers: one with a hole and one without.  I'm generally quite careful to put my SP in the one without the hole.  However, when I was in History class, I didn't really pay attention to which pocket I put it in.  I didn't check on it during all of 3rd period (watching a movie) and I left the class during 4th to run some errands.  When I came back, I checked my bag and it wasn't there.  I also sit next to one of those pot-smoking rednecks that always wants to play my SP and it seems likely he took it.  However, not knowing whether or not it fell out or whether someone took it, I can't really say anything.

This sucks.  I wonder if there's any way I can get a new one without shelling out $100+.

Nintendo Gaming / Pikmin 2!
« on: May 24, 2003, 08:19:21 AM »
I hope that battles are better this time around.  Most enemies could be defeated by simply running around behind them and throwing Pikmin.  I'd like to see some more sea monsters this time around, maybe even some ghosts (that would be so cool).  Pikmin 1 seemed like it was missing Miyamoto's magical touch.  There just wasn't enough whimsy about it.  I hope Pikmin II fixes it, instead of trying to be a Sci-Fi Soap Opera.
