Nintendo Gaming / THQ Support...
« on: September 08, 2005, 06:07:13 PM »
According to various internet sites, THQ's president is quoted saying that "Nintendo is waking up".  Something along the lines that there's more Nintendo support for this system than any other system before it.  If that's the case than Nintendo must really have something cooking behind the NDA lines.  That's a good sign for a Nintendo loyalist like me.  Lately these third party hints have me more optimistic than ever.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Announces Big Nintendogs Sales

...I freakin' hate cats...they piss all over the place and make everything stink...ewww!

Anyways, in terms of Nintendogs' sales...I knew this would work out for Nintendo.  I think this will be their killer app despite it not being an actual gamer's game.  Now, what would happen when Nintendo releases Animal Crossing and Mario Kart...I wonder how the hardware sales are going to be like.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Size Does Not Equal Power
« on: July 26, 2005, 07:41:15 PM »
Where the hell am I?  I've landed in the late Mr. Scott's Engineering Room.  I'm used to hearing a lot of whining and complaining in here, but here's a topic worth reading.  This topic rocks!

I agree that size does not equal power.  The point about the new design of the PS2 (and maybe even the PSP) illustrate this.  However, there's only one area where size does indeed matter in our society...hehehe...uhmmm basketball.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Killer Apps
« on: July 25, 2005, 07:02:52 PM »
I know this may sound strange in the topic of killer apps...but I've owned the GAMECUBE since day one and there has only been one game that has probably sold itself to 8 of my friends.  Yes 8 Gamecubes sold because of it...and that's BEACH SPIKERS.  Don't ask me why, but that game is addicting when there's a party at the house.  Say what you want, but I'm dead serious on this one.  Easy to control...yet there's a good enough amount of strategy.  I own all of the Gamecube Triple AAA titles and this simple one sells GCNs...go figure that one!

I'll take thepoga's Goldeneye and Perfect Dark On-line idea and raise it with a Conker BFD, Jet Force Gemini, and the Banjo Series.  They can also port Donkey Kong 64 and maybe do it right this time.

Peace Out!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Pikachu vs. Nintendogs
« on: June 10, 2005, 06:27:11 PM »
My gut feeling tells me that Nintendogs is going to sell like hot cakes here in America.  I think we're going to see a craze similar to the Pokemon one (with all of the copycats following).

Back to topic and then back again:  Hey You Pikachu! did not sell N64s like Nintendogs is going to sell DS(s).  This game will be the DS system's finest hour.  I thought I would never say this (being that I'm a fairly grounded gamer), but Nintendogs is a killer app!  You can quote me on this or take it to Vegas.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Are Retro working on something new?
« on: June 10, 2005, 06:21:20 PM »
If Retro really wants to showcase their talents, they're going to have to design a first person (adventure or shooter) utilizing some serious co-op via Revolution's WiFi.  I know this is a GCN topic, but Retro should commit themselves to creating the ultimate co-op first person game that will sell the Revolution.  I don't think Ravenblade will be that appealing because today's epic RPGs all will need some serious CG work.  I don't think Nintendo will support production values for a game that ambitious.  If they do decide to deliver, they're going to fall short in a major way.  They should just try to reinvent the first person shooter (again).

Strell, wait 10 minutes like I did, that reaction usually goes away and then you can be mad without the cursing.

I just read the story about 10 minutes ago.  It shows a lot of insight into the HD boom that is currently taking place all across the world from the developer's point of view.  I found it a bit ironic that Julian Eggbrecht was quoted in terms of Nintendo making the HD mistake when they were contracted to handle the sound of the GCN and gave us Pro Logic II w/ the pseudo use of the subwoofer late in the GCN development cycle.  Well, they've found a home making PS3 games.  Hopefully they won't release Rogue Squadron updates like they did with the N64/GCN.

Is it just me or does Denis Dyack, despite developing the exclusive Too Human Trilogy for XBOX 360, still have Nintendo's back.

Now that I've sounded like a complete 'fanboy', this is what I really thought about the article.  It felt like the tone of the article had that "here we go again" theme with Nintendo just not really willing to throw some goodies into a system (i.e., N64's cartridge format = losing Squaresoft, GCN's optical disc = not enough memory for voicework and movies to put into games, etc.).  I really believe that Nintendo more and more is losing momentum even as an "AND" company.  The specs or demos of what the system can do haven't even been shown and it already appears to have even the Nintendo community of loyalist starting to have doubts about purchasing it.  Nintendo is staying the course with the argument that technology is a tertiary aspect of gaming behind gameplay experience and content.  However, I think that there are just some technological advancements that should not be overlooked.  I don't mind that the Revolution is not going to be as powerful as the XBOX 360 and the PS3, but from a business standpoint, they need to show that they're willing to provide their future user-base with something that is increasingly becoming the norm.  Without HD, Nintendo is starting to lose the "AND" concept as well as the marketshare.

I'm still buying a Revolution though.  Denis Dyack if you happen to come in here...humor us and give us another exclusive on the Revolution to play alongside Zelda.

Peace out!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Square Enix Party - good time to reveal the Rev?
« on: June 02, 2005, 11:22:26 AM »
Just looking back at the topic of discussion here, I'm not even sure I want footage of a sequel when the original totally just didn't deliver.  The brand name was the only selling point (and maybe the opening song), but I was extremely disappointed with Nintendo's (or Yamauchi's) investment in Game Designer [pseudo] Studios didn't deliver.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Square Enix Party - good time to reveal the Rev?
« on: June 01, 2005, 04:23:28 PM »
"Even if the specs are good, I think the mystery is one of the best things they've got going for them."

I never thought of mystery as a form of hype.  If anything the mystery and secrecy for Nintendo hasn't actually been a strength.  Dating back to the announcement of a Dream Team for the Nintendo 64, a lot of third parties went to check out Nintendo's Spaceworld where there was a demo of Starfox, Super Mario 64, and that forgotten Star Wars title with the Han Solo "wannabe" AND were turned off with the final product.  Squaresoft (now Square Enix) and Shiny's David Perry didn't take too well to the cartridge format, which led to Nintendo's demise in the home console wars.  The Nintendo 64 was outselling the Playstation until Final Fantasy VII came along.  I think Nintendo for the first time needs to stop this mysterious stuff and reveal specs and start dishing out some dev kits to developers so they can get some feedback to what they're doing wrong with the system; otherwise, this window of opportunity will never present itself again.

Mystery is also a form of weakness.  The weakness that they do not have the resources to compete with MS and Sony on a higher level.  Weakness will also cause you to say things like "we're headed in a completely different direction."

I'm a big Nintendo fan, but they need to start tending to the needs of the fans that have stuck with them first and then go out and recruit the non-gamer.

Getting back to the topic, the Square Enix Party will be dominated by Sony through the next generation when they announce a PS4 that's going to cost gamers $800 and will compete its own VAIO, much like the PS2 competed with its own DVD players.

Ian, as big a fan and as many complaints as we do about Nintendo, do you really think with everything else going in favor of the competition that we're going to get a preview of FF:CC?  Don't get your hopes up on this one.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:A Revolutionary Launch
« on: May 20, 2005, 05:46:11 PM »
A revolutionary launch?

I agree with the notion that the killer app for the next generation for Nintendo should NOT be an existing franchise...OR at least bring back an old NES franchise that hasn't been touched (e.g., Faxanadu).  Nintendo had their worst launch with Gamecube (not counting Virtual Boy) because they decided to launch with the ghostbusting Luigi's Mansion.  Even though the following months introduced gamers with Pikmin and Super Smash Bros. Melee, the launch was weak.  The N64's launch was considerably better because they had the revolutionary Super Mario 64, and that's when gamers like myself had to settle for Pilotwings 64 and wait 2 months for the next release - Waverace 64.  People were buying.  It wasn't until Final Fantasy VII that everything went in Sony's favor.  Back to the topic, Nintendo really needs a killer app or a couple of them at launch.  I'll buy whatever they bring out, but if they can duplicate the originality of Pikmin in a killer app and launch with another Mario title (highly unlikely based on the Miyamoto interview), Nintendo can convince me of their moving in a different direction sentiment.

Nintendo needs a killer app similar to what Halo was to the XBOX.  I'm a big fan of Nintendo, but unless they want to appeal to anyone at all, I hope that they've got a secret title that's pretty far into development that's going to knock everyone's socks off.  However, if any of the recent E3 and Denis Dyack interviews are any indication, we're in for more of the same stuff like we've been getting with Cube.  Nintendo needs to sack-up!

Nintendo Gaming / Square Enix Comments and Possible Support
« on: May 11, 2005, 05:58:54 PM »
I hope these comments aren't the same type as the ones we heard about machine codenamed "Dolphin", only later to be translated into the form of a weak four-player game that required four GBAs and carrying a bucket.  Come one Square-Enix, how about you guys put your praises to work and bring on some real support!  Sony seems to get all of Square-Enix's attention and Mistwalker seems spinning themselves silly with XBOX 360.  Nintendo support?  If it happens, I will run through E3 2005 naked and draw all of the attention away from the neighboring TECMO booth.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Broadcom Announced as Partner...WiFi Confirmation
« on: April 19, 2005, 06:33:38 PM »
There are 3 issues that we have WiFi now that Nintendo has committed.

(1)  What's the quality going to be like?  As Strell previously mentioned, he's had a problem with Broadcom's cards.  What can we expect?

(2)  Is it going to be free for Revolution as it is for the Nintendo DS?  Iwata confirmed that the DS WiFi is going to be free based on his speech at the GDC.  Can we expect the same for Nintendo Revolution?

(3)  Is the development community going to open their arms to Nintendo in terms of going on-line?...OR  Is it too late?  There are other questions on whether or not Nintendo can deliver an experience wirelessly that XBOX Live has on its Broadband network.  What's Nintendo and Broadcom going to do to close the gap?

Looks like the new system IS going to be online based on the new report.  Iwata's message makes me feel like Nintendo is actually starting to move in the direction I thought they always tended to ignore and make their loyal fans (like me) swallow it all up.  Good stuff.

General Gaming / RE:Is this E3 make or break for the GC?
« on: March 27, 2004, 04:09:17 PM »
You're right about Metroid Prime not being a sleeper hit, but I was simply stating the fact that I got to view everything at E3 and it was hands-down the game of the show for me.

Is it just me or do people have a knack for shooting down posts in these forums?  Ian Sane, does the word 'failure' mean larger profit vs. larger installed base?  I agree that the line-up of games at E3 usually give a good forecast on sales for the year; however, I think it is still based on journalistic interpretation and biased 'hype'.  There really hasn't been a non-biased coverage of the show.

I've been going to E3 for the past four/five years since it's been held at the LA Convention Center.  I can tell you that the booth that's always been heavily filled with 'show attendees' is Nintendo's booth.  It might have something to do with Nintendo having a very large section (or it may just be the same old Tecmo girls near the Nintendo booth) every year.  I don't think it has anything to do with the mindless 'superhot' chicks Nintendo's got dressed up in those blue stewardess outfits, but a lot to do with the line up.  It is true that Nintendo's line-up last year wasn't stellar, but merely showcased third party efforts.  A lot of people made the assessment that Nintendo was repairing third party relations.  I think it's that Nintendo's quality is respected so much by both media and industry that their area is always the most filled.

In response to the topic here -- Is this E3 going to make or break the GameCube?  It is going to be heavily reliant on how the media and the industry interprets Nintendo's lineup.  This show is for the media and the industry.  It's all based on who your getting your news from and what their biases are.  If people don't see it for themselves, they're going to rely on the hands-on impressions of one representative of a website or magazine.  Truthfully, I don't expect any Nintendo love this year from the press at all.  I expect us "to be at war with Spain" via 'Citizen Kane'-type press releases.

I'll definitely be giving impressions in the forums during showtime.  Last year, I was very impressed with 'Prince of Persia' and it turned out to win a bunch of awards.  I was right about 'Metroid Prime' the year before too.  I think I'm on a roll here.  Let's see if I'm right again this year shall we.  It'd probably be nice to finally meet PGC.  I think one of them looks like Peter Jackson.  I'll be looking for you Rick Powers.  If I call you Peter Jackson, you'll know it's me.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why is no one talking about Prince of Persia?
« on: November 30, 2003, 11:50:59 AM »
This game is definitely worth the pick-up.  I haven't read too many posts on it, but it should be on ever CUBE owner's radar.  My only gripe with the game is the length.  I beat it in about 7 hours on Thanksgiving Day.  The other problem with the game are the visions at every save point.  UBISOFT might as well show you a video on every little move you have to make for each puzzle.  Despite these minor problems, this game has a shot at GAME OF THE YEAR.  Its Super Mario 64/Sunshine but the moves are limited for more realism and the art style is different.  The gameplay reminds me of what "Out of This World" was for the SNES.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:GOTY Contenders DISCUSSION
« on: November 26, 2003, 03:33:05 PM »
I am a really big fan of the Zelda series.  Wind Waker was definitely an incredible evolution to the series with the emotion that was added by the cel-shaded graphics; however, I think my choice for Game of the Year is definitely going to be with the outstanding "Prince of Persia:  Sands of Time".  While Wind Waker was evolutionary, Prince of Persia was revolutionary.  I haven't played anything else that comes close to this game.  I was hooked at E3 and I'm definitely hooked now.  Also, for you Wind Waker fans, you should try "Beyond Good and Evil".  I think Ubi Soft is on a roll.  We'll see how "XIII" turns out.

Nintendo Gaming / Denis Dyack Interview
« on: May 26, 2003, 06:34:05 AM »
I think if there's one message that's important from Denis Dyack's interview for Nintendo fans to realize is that Nintendo is making strides to forge better 3rd party relationships.  His insights from interactions with Kojima and Miyamoto are truly remarkable.  Although I didn't get the chance to meet Denis at E3 2003, the collaborations with other companies is definitely going to pay off in the long run especially with the next generation.  This message generally wasn't felt by the majority of attendees at the show; however, this behind-the-scenes activity is encouraging and will be felt in the next generation for sure.  Kudos to PGC for the great interview.

General Gaming / Anyone else think Nintendo had a lame show?
« on: May 17, 2003, 12:57:56 PM »
Walking the floor at this year's E3, one thing is always apparent...I end up at the Nintendo booth almost every time.  Sure, gathering shirts and walking the other halls while taking pictures with really fine women is fun, but the Big N's booth seems to draw you like a magnet.  I was disappointed by MGS: Twin Snakes and the camera work on with Rogue Squadron (you can't even control the camera on the ground missions); however, I really wasn't impressed by any other booth.  Sure, Microsoft had HALO II, but that was it.  I was a big Conker's BFD fan for the N64, yet it didn't seem to make a giant leap in gameplay and graphics in my honest opinion.  Kameo had some potential, but the market has become flooded third person.  Sony had a pretty solid showing, but it didn't outshine anyone elses.

All-in-all, I'm going to have to agree that there wasn't really anything impressive all around (except for Prince of Persia...that game rocks).
