It just hit me.  You're right...Blizzard was a publisher...but only for the translations to the GBA.  I just remembered who published the original SNES ones.  Interplay.  They were responsible for both "The Lost Vikings" and "Rock n' Roll Racing".  I remember because video game reviewers couldn't believe how great the music was on both of those titles.  Interplay also came out with the rent-only Clayfighters.  They were bought out or had a name change.

Also, if you got the Rare website, the company did program RC-Pro Am.  I was confused with Tradewest because they developed Battletoads and Tradewest published that game.

I think I'm going to add Kid Icarus...but I'm going to start a campaign that this franchise in 3D would make good use of the Rev Controller.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Launch Titles: What must we have.
« on: October 23, 2005, 11:15:22 PM »
I agree...Metroid is a First-Person Adventure game.  It is more Zelda than Goldeneye.  The fact that it is a one player game is a strength that has translated from the NES era.  If there should be some kind of on-line multiplayer...then a new franchise from Retro would be cool.  Unless, Nintendo goes out and buys an edxisting studio that is just as talented as Retro is.

On topic...Nintendo needs to make use of their new controller.  I remember hearing Miyamoto responding to a reporter about Kid Icarus (sorry no source)...and he asked the reporter whether or not we would like to see them translate this title (20 years later).  I think Nintendo can really show the use of this "revolutionary" controller with a game like Kid Icarus.  The use of the various flying maneuvers for the controller would come in handy.  AND...If they do bring this back from videogame limbo...they should drop the "Kid" from the title and make it much more mature on a Zelda: Twilight Princess level.  A launch game like this would kick ass alongside Metroid Dread and the new Mario.

Metroid Dread?  How the hell did I miss this?  I guess all of the disappointment of not seeing any games along with XBOX 360-love and PS3 FMV drowned out this important development.

Miyamoto shouldn't get credit for this one...as Metroid is created by Gumpei Yokoi, who is now deceased.  Also, Retro is doing all the work for this sans the music and Miyamoto's right hand man who visits them.  Of course, that's if development of the game is the same as it was for Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2:  Echoes.

Still, Miyamoto is a genius!

Actually, they should go to Camelot...and maybe Camelot can learn something about making a next-generation RPG...like a REV Golden Sun...hehehe

I will go ahead a compile a list based on system because I'm not sure if Nintendo published some of these or not (e.g., RC Pro-Am -- was it Nintendo or Tradewest that published it?).

NES Games
1.  RC Pro-Am (Nintendo or Tradewest?)
2.  Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (Tecmo)
3.  Bionic Commando (Tecmo)
4.  Kid Icarus (Nintendo)
5.  Punch-out

SNES Games
1.  Chrono Trigger (Squaresoft)
2.  Mario RPG (Squaresoft)
3.  F-Zero (Nintendo)
4.  Super Castlevania IV (Konami)
5.  Super Metroid (Nintendo)
6.  Pilotwings (Nintendo)
7.  The Lost Vikings (Interplay)
8.  Rock 'n Roll Racing (Interplay)...drawn to this game because of the upgrades and the races were really fun.

N64 Games
1.  Goldeneye (Nintendo)
2.  Perfect Dark (Rareware-published...Nintendo distribution)
3.  Conker's Bad Fur Day (Rareware-published...Nintendo distribution)
4.  Pilotwings 64 (Nintendo)
5.  Beetle Adventure Racing (EA)
6.  Indiana Jones...which was only available for rent (LucasArts)
7.  Starfox 64 (Nintendo)
8.  International Superstar Soccer (Konami)

That seems like it.  I own the Zelda Collector's Edition Disc, as well as the Master Quest disc...so I don't really need to download those.

All the game creator quotes show promise for Revolution development; however, unless I really hear some actual game announcements about work that is in progress and what they're readying for launch, THEN I will start getting excited.  It feels like we're having a Revolution news drought now and Nintendo seems like they're going to want to hold on to all fo their secrets until E3 2006.  This is approximately 7 months away.

Ever since the unveiling of the controller, I've been clicking away hoping to get some NEW information ever since.  Now, the reality of the WAITING GAME is starting to settle in.  Anybody with me on this?

Unfortunately, I'll still be clicking away...too much of a "fanboy" to begin with.  S#!T!

I'm curious about the equestrian mechanics of the game.  Are they a rip off of the Zelda franchise?  Are the controls similar OR will they be superior to those of the new Zelda game coming out?  The reason why I ask is because Nintendo has decided to take the extra time to complete Twilight Princess, there are more games coming out that may utilize the same concept; thus, taking away from the originality of the title.  Then again, everything has evolved from Ocarina of Time.

Does this sound like fanboy rant?

This is a long shot if I've ever seen one...BUT...then again we were in this same situation when we doubted the Rev controller's unveiling at TGS AND Square Enix's latest contributions to Nintendo DS.  Here's hoping that the Revolution's controller will attract FPS developers like Valve.

General Gaming / RE:Too Human Trilogy: Exclusive for 360
« on: October 12, 2005, 06:58:29 PM »
I guess the fanboy in all of us is strong with this topic.  I read the interview and Denis still continues to give a good interview like he's the ambassador of gaming.  You've got to admit, this game looks like it is going to kick some major ass.  I've read a lot of speculation at how much the gameplay will suck, but we haven't seen anything to comment on just yet.  I couldn't help but wonder how Silicon Knights and Rareware offering up Perfect Dark Zero and Too Human as possible killer apps for Microsoft certainly makes Nintendo's new direction and stance with the Revolution that much more ambitious.

I've never invested heavily in other systems like I do Nintendo systems, but sitting back and watching everything develop for the PS3 and XBOX 360 going in one big-budget direction and Revolution in the other makes me realize that gaming isn't just about different gameplay genres possible on a standard controller...it is more becoming like different lifestyle choices.  To be more specific, with the current generation and the ones before, owning multiple competing consoles wasn't a difficult task.  However, I still favor my GCN over the others.  Yet, with the next generation, the prices of the XBOX 360 and the PS3 will definitely not allow most to own both... AND Nintendo's new controller will be affordable but with an investment in nunchucks and other accessories along with convincing oneself that the new controller is the way to go.  Not to mention, Nintendo's inexperience with creating an online community...which is key to the success of their next console.

Back to the topic, I think we should be happy for Denis and the rest of his guild.  I think this was more Nintendo's loss for not funding this project.  For the fanboy, he still has a lot of respect for Nintendo as he states in his interview.  We can't fault him for catering to Microsoft in his interview because unlike Nintendo, they put the big bucks behind Too Human.  Hopefully, development times with this will be historically different to what we're used to AND their partnership with Sega offers up some Revolution titles.

We haven't had this much Square-Enix love since the SNES...when we were getting individual Square and Enix contributions.  This announcement is huge for Nintendo and the longevity of their little DS.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Battalion Wars: Looks like a riot!
« on: October 03, 2005, 05:30:22 PM »
I've had the game for about 2 weeks now and average about an hour a day after work with it.  It definitely is a real gem of a game.  I can't remember the last time I wanted to get really in-depth about a very big landscape in 3D.  You see this sort of thing all the time with Advance Wars on the GBA and the DS.  However, I haven't since the original Goldeneye when I would try to memorize everything going on in a level.  Batallion Wars sometimes make you study...and sometimes you may just go overboard with the studying and realize that all you had to do was round up everyone and kick some ass.

Knock out all your anti-air threats...and bomb the S#!t out of the enemy.

The game is definitely a hybrid of Pikmin and Advance Wars...

« on: October 03, 2005, 04:32:53 PM »
The Super Nintendo was historically Nintendo's best system.  It helped put gaming to where it is today.  How?

(1)  Mode 7 scaling at launch with titles like Pilotwings and F-Zero.

(2)  The development of the FX Chip (running polygons at higher speeds than Faceball to show what the future of gaming will be like...and Starfox was unbelievable at the time).

(3)  ACM graphics that brought new life to 2D sprites with the release of the Donkey Kong Country series (and later Square games)

I know I'm off topic, but I had to respond to that comment.

Reader Reviews / RE:Advance Wars: Dual Strike
« on: September 22, 2005, 04:30:48 PM »
Being that I've mastered both Advance Wars I and II along with Fire Emblem, I would say because they are both developed by Intelligent Systems, they're both using the same graphics engine and the gameplay is very similar.  However, there is much more versatility with the Advance Wars series because of the abilities of military personnel and machinery.  For example, in Advance Wars, you've got two types of troops, one with a rifle and the other with a bazooka.  The rest are military vehicles that can transport other vehicles and/or troops to different areas.  As a result you have a much larger area to cover and much more troops.  As a matter of fact, you can control up to 3 different armies.  What's even more impressive is Advance Wars II's addition of factories and volcanoes to change it up a bit.

On the other hand, Fire Emblem is just as addicting, but there are just too many different types of humanoid characters with different abilities that all move just about the same distance.  The only vehicles are horses and flying dragons.  Other than that, I don't remember anything else.  On the flip side, Fire Emblem does involve a lot more real-time character development by leveling up the characters during battles, but the reward of developing the characters is thrown out the door once you're given a super level-up toward the end of the game so the enemies in the last level don't beat the crap out of you.

Fire Emblem is a lot more difficult and it requires a lot more attention to development if you want to beat the game.  I've played that last level more times than I'd like to admit to.  The Advance Wars series will give you a clean slate at the beginning of every level.

Now I'm definitely going to have to put down DOR2 and Batallion Wars to finish what I started with Killer 7.  Good show Viewtiful Gamer - that's 2 quick responses...and I thought no one was monitoring this part of the Forum.  Since you were kind enough to take the time to answer, I'll post some reviews starting with Batallion Wars next week.  I like the idea that people are actually reading the "Reader Reviews" section.

Thanks for the tip.  I guess I can now revisit the game after one whole month of not touching it due to frustration and having my younglings laugh at me 'cause I can't beat the guy.  Does it get better?  How much is in the second disc?'

Thanks again.

I just bought the game and I put in about an hour and a half.  I've completed the first three missions and right now I'm still getting to know the control scheme.  The learning curve for controlling this game is not bad.  The first couple of levels are basically tutorials.  I haven't gotten Pikmin comfortable, but I'm getting there.  I'm looking forward to going home tonight to play it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Revolution and Bluetooth
« on: September 17, 2005, 07:17:40 AM »
I didn't get the Bluetooth connectivity part from the TGS coverage.  If what your saying is true...could this mean a Bluetooth headset to interact with other gamers while on-line...or is that just too much technology for Nintendo to allow their new console.  As history would illustrate with the cartridge format of the N64 vs. CD and the GCN optical discs vs. DVD, Nintendo doesn't want to go the extra mile only to implement in their next generation what the competition offers in the existing generation.  Therefore, is a bluetooth headset too much for Nintendo?...or am I completely off topic?

By the way, don't be afraid of Ian to shoot down your enthusiasm...this forum needs his view to keep us from getting our hopes up...even if it means we hate Adam West from now until the end of time.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The Official IWATATON Speech Thread
« on: September 15, 2005, 08:53:02 PM »
I'm still not sure why people are jumping the gun with their first impressions.  None of us outside of the lucky TGS attendees have actually taken a spin with the new controller.  Furthermore, there hasn't been any software for the press to release something concrete about an actual Revolution experience.  I'm still soaking it all in just by the way the darn thing looks.  I'm actually pretty psyched.

True, there were GCN controller ports for the Revolution at E3; however, do we know if these controller ports will work with new Revolution software if a player doesn't like the Rev game.  I'm not even sure if most developers will give us that option.  The only plus side to using a GC controller for Rev games are third party ports.  If a developer doesn't want to conform to the new controller, will Nintendo allow the use of a GC controller for ports and allow people to scream "gimmick".

The point it -- It is still too early for any of us to start screaming bloody murder.  A little more optimism would be good.  Just don't get yourself all worked up about it and hyped...only to be disappointed in the end.

I thought the first one was okay.  I got into the card system and it was a joy to play.  The story was a bit too corny in some areas even though the graphics were smokin' hot.  I'd rather Namco give us another exclusive sequel to the Tales series.  Tales of Symphonia was a much better game despite the weird overworld representation of enemies.

Nevertheless, we should all be happy that Namco is throwing some love Nintendo's way.  Too bad the Soul Caliber III logic isn't.

General Gaming / RE:More Sonic Goodness but....
« on: September 10, 2005, 10:28:00 PM »
When I read the story on IGN yesterday, I couldn't help but remember Yuji Naka's quote about how impressed he was with the Revolution.  Perhaps Nintendo's NDAs do have slap "upside" the head if you say too much.  Although the sales figures for GCN for Sonic games has been better this generation than on the other platforms, it makes perfect business sense for Sega to want to go ahead and debut a Sonic game at the beginning of the next generation system's life cycle.  If it does better on the Revolution in the next generation and Sega keeps releasing Sonic on a multiplatform basis, then we can begin to question them.

If anything, I'd be more worried that Yuji Naka didn't announce Sonic for the Revolution because it is severely underpowered and he wanted some horsepower to keep Blue Blur alive and well for years to come much like Resident Evil 4 did for Shinji Mikami.

Does anyone have a Mikami or Flagship quote for the Revolution?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:THQ Support...
« on: September 09, 2005, 11:01:43 AM »
"Guardedly optimistic"...good way to put how we all feel about this story.  With the N64, we were feeling arrogant because we thought Nintendo was untouchable.  With the GCN, we were hoping for the return of Nintendo to the top of the heap.  Now with Revolution, there's a more humble optimism hoping for Nintendo to at least have a competent gaming machine for the next generation.  Quotes from Peter Molyneux (spelling?) and Sonic creator Yuji Naka are also generating much more promise for the Rev.

Back to THQ...their GCN WWE games will be important to sell hardware to people who are both hardcore fans of WWE and Nintendo.

400
In relation to your "two cents", I've started a thread based on the new story reported at various internet gaming sites that the THQ president is seeing more from Nintendo now more than ever.  If this keeps up with Yuji Naka and Peter Molyneux (spelling?)  praising Nintendo, your theory on more third party support may gain some momentum and we can call you "Nintendo-damas".
