Anyhoo since Rare made GBA games I see no reason why they wouldn't continue to make DS games.  It's probably a sweet deal for MS to leech of a competitor's product like this.  MS benefits from both Nintendo's failings as a console maker and their success as a portable maker.

I'll have to agree.  A lot of the same people that loved that rotating "R" right down to its last Nintendo turn hated the deal for MS to acquire RARE.  Now, I'm hearing the same gamers bashing RARE.  Truthfully, if a game like KAMEO ended up on the GCN like it was originally supposed to...[Sidenote:  the original GCN box has a picture of both KAMEO and Donkey Kong Racing]...it would totally be untouchable by the PGC Forum firing squad.

I couldn't agree more.  Nintendo WiFi is about to get a big boost and a larger on-line community.  I wonder if the Nintendo website will now add a new section for online play to their on AC newspaper -- "The Crossing Guardian"...I think that's the name.

This is actually good news for Nintendo because the Banjo Kazooie games still have a lot of fans...and now that RARE has caught on with trying to avoid with the "collect-a-thon" genre of gaming, there's no need to worry it it'll be good.  In the end...RARE and NINTENDO fans win.

3.  Jet Force Gemini

Hmmmm...blown out of proportion huh?  We're a trigger happy firing squad ready to debate anything you throw in here.

Back on topic:  Nintendo is definitely going to try and generate some pre-E3 buzz (as they've done in the past)...that's a given.  My whole concern is waiting to release info on May 9th...definitely not the way to disseminate information and creating some mo' going into E3.

I'll be there for this one though.  Nintendo better have one hell of a show lined up for E3...or Reggie will have his name taken by the Planet Gamecube Forums firing squad.

Amen to that.

EGM was a reliable source in the days of the GENESIS and the SNES.  There wasn't any bias back then.  They were still throwing Nintendo some love with the Zelda cover and the E3 2002 Nintendo triple threat of Metroid, Super Mario Sunshine, and Wind Waker.   I had the unfortunate experience of having a Gamestop special of getting the GameInformer magazine.  I couldn't stand reading how mainstream it felt.  It was as if the writers for the magazine were spawned from the current generation of consoles in a popularity contest.  I agree with most here that Gameinformer is the anti-Nintendo magazine.

That argument is BARELY relevant here. I remember Rogue Squadron coming out at launch and it being one of the most beautiful games on any system.....and guess what... it still is. Also, WaveRace came out and showed us water graphics and physics like no other. I have yet to see a game with such beautiful water. The only game that comes close is Sunshine.

The reason why the argument is BARELY relevant and not just irrelevant is because systems are getting more complicated. The Xbox 360 is most likely a bitch to program for. I also heard that all the launch games don't even use a multi-core setup. That's the only reason I'm not judging the 360 graphic wise. First generation is actually a valid argument here.

However, I'm almost positive that when Metriod Prime 3 comes out, it will rival any games graphically (in art and technicallity) that proceed it. Just like RS did with the GC.

There was barely any content in that statement to begin with.  2 short sentences supported by another in an attempt to crack a joke.  If anything, you've just supported my statement.  In terms of your Rogue Squadron 3 and WR: BS point, I disagree completely.  Wind Waker, RE: Remake, RE: Zero, RE4, and Rare's second generation entry of Starfox Adventures were all a step up in graphics.  True, Rogue Squadron 3 and WR: BS were beautiful titles and still look good to this day, but they were eventually eclipsed by future GCN generations.

On a side note:  Let me guess...you're one of the few that have the progressive scan mode running on both those first generations titles?

BTW, I like your impressions of the 360.

Microsoft isn't doomed...not by a long shot.  It still has a killer app planned for the PS3 launch...and that's Halo 3.  Halo 3 will outsell MGS4 and it won't even be close.  Not to mention, they've got Japanese support for the immediate future (=before PS3) to try and steal the PS2 crowd early.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:My Revolution Conspiracy Theory
« on: November 18, 2005, 03:39:29 PM »
I echo the point about the announcement for "Broadway" and "Hollywood" making the REV different than the GCN...but this initial post would make sense due to Iwata and Miyamoto's  own statements about the GCN and REV environments being similar.  That being said...if the Revoultion is a beefed up GCN upgrade...then I would say that the XBOX 360 is a XBOX upgrade.  Sure they use completely different hardware (ATI vs. Pentium-like chip); however, I've seen the demos at the local Gamestop and the 360 visuals, despite being first generation, are basically a leg up on the XBOX graphics.  Microsoft claimed that the hardware was 10 times more powerful, but it looks more like 2 to 3 times more powerful.  Wait a minute, didn't Miyamoto say that about the Rev (when compared to the GCN)?

The team that was responsible for the N64's KI Gold was headed by Mark Betteridge ( I could have the first name wrong)...but that team would go on to create Conker 64...and change it to Conquer's Quest...and then finally after many years of work, it became Conquer's BFD with the extreme makeover.  The game was initially shown with the original Banjo Kazooie as Project Dream.  These projects were supposed to be the N64 equivalents to the SNES Donkey Kong Country advancements in graphics, but in 3D.

I'm not sure if Team Betteridge is still with RARE and if they actually followed through and finished the end-product of Conquer's BFD for the N64...OR if he ever left RARE at all.  I do remember his last interview with Nintendo Power where he was boasting about the facial expressions on Conquer when they created the game.

Back on topic:  I would take the  information from the RARE employee with a grain of salt.  It would seem weird that a RARE employee would identify himself and praise the Rev.  Then again, members of Free Radical, David Doak and Mike Armstrong, have gone on record with IGN (October 11th, 2002) in an interview stating Nintendo is their "spiritual home".

As for RARE having tech specs on the Revolution, I would highly doubt it.  The DS and GBA are different because they don't directly compete with the XBOX 360.  Then again, SONY owned Psygnosis during the PSX era, and they used Acclaim to port games to competing systems.

TalkBack / RE:Sakurai Still Smashing on Revolution
« on: November 17, 2005, 06:31:21 AM »
I think another aspect of this story that we have to consider is Iwata's ability to reconnect with Sakurai.  It is probably a strength that the current NCL president has coming from a programming background.  It doesn't hurt that he was a part of HAL in the first place.  I hope this continues to transcend to other development houses as well.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Mario Party Revolution
« on: November 12, 2005, 08:54:07 PM »
"GET N OR GET OUT.  COMING 2006."  That campaign slogan for the N64 was a good one.  However, I liked "PLAY IT LOUD" for the SNES.

Back on topic:  I agree that Mario Party has been milked dry.  However because of the new controller (along with online play and easy gameplay type of "pick up and play"), Nintendo needs should continue the series to fall in line with their push to attract the non-gamer.  Imagine all of the mini-games falling in line with the actions shown by the controller trailer (e.g., cooking food, fishing, drumming with two controllers, etc.).  The only catch is that I would rather them release 2 games in the Revolution life cycle.

The only reason why Nintendo should release one every year and milk it dry IS if Hudson and Nintendo are making a lot of money off of this franchise.

I almost forgot about someone mentioning a girlfriend...

It is a proven fact:

Mario Party is a really cool way to attract a non-gamer girlfriend...it gives new meaning to the phrase, "Do you want to party?"

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Less power an advantage for Revolution?
« on: November 12, 2005, 11:59:39 AM »
Less power?  If Miyamoto is saying that the REV is 2 to 3 times more powerful than the GCN...I'm starting to believe that the REV maybe just as powerful as the XBOX360.  Why?  Well, I've been looking at the demos at Gamestop for Microsoft's new console and it really isn't a major leap.  Sure, the graphics are amazing, but the current generation isn't even that far off.

If Microsoft thinks that the XBox360 is 10 times powerful...then I'm really starting to see the modesty in Nintendo's numbers.  The demos, even though they looked great, just don't seem that far off from games like RE4.  I know they're just first generation titles, but I don't see a vast leap in technology just yet.  I really do believe that once the market gets flooded and the general gaming public is desensitized by the next generation of graphics...then maybe Nintendo's new way to play just might work.

Wrong, wrong, and WRONG...People are misinformed on this...The reason Square left was because there was a LOT of tension between their head and Yamauchi...Square did a LOT of software bloating to make it seem like FFVII was much too big for cartridges, because Square was behind the Sony philosophy that "more discs so the game is better"...I mean come on, Square used WAV files for the music!  WAV FILES!

I disagree.  When I was working retail about a decade ago before Final Fantasy VII was released, the N64 was outselling the PSX from month to month.  I knew it because I monitored the sales of all consoles by looking at a nationwide database of a major videogame retailer.  I was (and still is) a loyal Nintendo fan and I thought the N64 would take over just like the SNES.  However, when Final Fantasy VII hit the scene with its gorgeous CG FMV, the PSX would go on to outsell the N64.  The only way the N64 was ever able to outsell a PSX on a given week was when there was a shortage of PSX's.

More examples for you Bill.  Sports games for the PSX were better because of the added storage space.  Once NFL Gameday was able to upgrade to running polygons, it became a much better sports game along with all of the commentary.  The ability to point out player names and having more to say than just "BOOM", "What a tackle", "Number 8 throws the ball", OR "Touchdown" without having to worry about having enough space to fit in-game speech.  It was so bad that we were surprised at how much voice work Starfox 64.  As a matter of fact, Nintendo fans (including myself) were bragging about how much voice acting was in Starfox 64...that was really pathetic.  Before someone points out that in-game speech was never a Nintendo necessity, then why did they try to put it in the game instead of the "bleeps" and "boops" of the original SNES title.  Hell, they allowed it for Banjo Kazooie and even the GCN's Animal Crossing.  WTF!

The cartridge medium also cost Nintendo all of the third-party support it enjoyed from the SNES era because it was too expensive compared to CDs.  Major companies like Konami, Capcom, Enix, and EA found the PSX a much better investment with the larger installed base, cheaper medium (CD's), and more storage space to load their FMV crap.

I did hear that the Squaresoft and Nintendo executives had a falling out.  I'm not sure, but I think I may still have a hardcopy of Next Generation magazine that shows that the falling out happened after Squaresoft moved their Final Fantasy series over to Sony's Playstation because Square's developers touted that they had ordered Silicon Graphics tools to create their beautiful CG sequences and pre-rendered backgrounds.  Let me get back to you on that hardcopy so I can cite the references.

Yet, regardless if this falling out happened before or after Squaresoft jumped ship, you can't ignore the fact that Nintendo messed up with their decision to go with the cartridges...in retrospect.  Despite all of the groundbreaking games that were available for the N64 (some of the greatest of all time), the lower storage capacity of the cartridge was the sole reason why Nintendo is where it is today.

Getting back to topic:  Nintendo should learn from the XBOX 360 developers who are complaining about the lack of space.  Nintendo has heard it with their past two consoles.  I hope they don't repeat their mistakes...as history has shown that they have.

Oh yeah...and the music on WAV files Bill?:  I remember that Nintendo wanted to demonstrate that MIDI tracks were able to give the games dynamic music.  Nintendo was bragging how RARE was demonstrating how music would change underwater or when enemies were encountered in Banjo Kazooie.  My only problem was that while that was great for the 5 seconds that I noticed it, there wasn't enough space to put out a decent MIDI game soundtrack with plenty of variation.  Turok, anyone?

LOL @ The Toaster...and to think people were actually taking Ian seriously...or were they?

I think Nintendo needs to learn that they can't keep going forward with their N64-like approach to the type of medium used to play this game.  The cartridge is the reason why Nintendo lost the marketshare and that's the bottom line.  The GCN disc apparently is still too small for most game developers to cram all of their ideas into it.  THQ was the most recent victim of this with DOR2.  I also didn't like the fact that I had to get up and change my discs every 5 seconds for sports games like EA's Tiger Woods 2003.

Even the next generation is already experiencing third-party developer complaints with the XBOX 360.  I think it was a recent interview that J. Allard had with IGN that caused him to come out and be a bit critical about how third-parties aren't using their tools efficiently.  I'll post the link later.  As games become more complex, I'm sure Nintendo can come up with a medium these days that'll hold enough (and then some) for developers to run wild and be more comfortable.

As for Batallion Wars...the game has a bit of learning curve...but once you get going...you get the same satisfaction that you get when you're playing the original Pikmin.  Why not Pikmin 2?  Both Batallion Wars and Pikmin are single-player only.

Apple can do it because the iPod is a proven product and the re-design isn't as drastic as going from Cube to Rev.  Although, given the amount of hype Nintendo gave the GCN (not much compared to XBOX at launch), Nintendo might as well release a console without notice.

As far as politics and the congressional elections of 2006...the only way Nintendo would get any interference from them is if Rockstar simply drops their Sony love and releases a really crazy version of GTA.  That'll stir up some controversy, but it will never happen...the GTA on Rev.  So...not an issue.
