General Gaming / RE:The bananarang will be the controller
« on: January 11, 2006, 07:16:47 PM »
SO...is the boomerang the final controller.  Last I checked, there was no finalized controller shown at CES.  Is the REV remote about to get ripped off?

Alright...so I've read the link you gave me...thanks by the way...AND I'm still debating the authenticity of it...

If there's one point that should be echoed in here...(I believe that Ian chimed in on this...damn that guy writes his ass off in here)...Sony's domination in the console market is theirs to lose.

I think we'll see the validity of this developer blog at the next Nintendo Summit when Reggie talks about his "Ocean" nonsense part deux and just how Nintendo will be saying "I told you so".

However, The world is still round and I still believe that Sony is not stupid enough to make Nintendo mistakes (a la cartridge in the N64 era) to lose your stranglehold on the marketplace.

Hmmm..."Nintendo mistakes" was a bit harsh...since they are having DS success...although I'm still debating whether Nintendo was just plain lucky with their DS decisions mixed in with Sony's UMD arrogance...

I smell foul play as far as the Rev controller being ripped off...

What is potentially damaging is the Blue-Ray Disc format not catching on.  Sony's upcoming format may be criticized by those who think the UMD format was pure arrogance on Sony's part; thus leading to PSP being currently outsold.

Back on topic:  "Trashes PS3" on the topic title is a bit misleading.  However, I share the same sentiments about the next generation not being all that big of a jump.  Sure, it may look good in HD; however, it will still have the same gameplay mechanics that are possible with the current generation.

Huh?

The thing is, I still don't hear the DS mentioned in casual conversation whenever gaming comes up.  Just now in the kitchen at work two women were talking about their son and husband and their games.  It was very, very brief, but the PS3, PSP, and Xbox 360 were each mentioned about once and nothing from Nintendo was mentioned at all.  Makes you wonder if it's really just the hardcore gamers buying the DS, and not so much the non-gamers or casual gamers that Nintendo is saying they're supposedly courting.  And as it was a son/husband thing, it still seems to be a male thing.  I don't expect older women to be gamers themselves, particularly DS ones, as it's still too soon for that, but if the DS is creaming the PSP, why isn't proportionately mentioned?

Yeah, I agree with both JonLeung and Ian for this one.  However, I've seen more of the PSP in public than Nintendo DS, which is why the sales are shocking to me.  Of course, I live in Southern California...the mainstream gamer capital of the world.

Just today, I was talking to some mainstream gamer co-workers and the first thing they mention about the next generation is the PS3 and the XBOX 360.  I mentioned the Revolution and I got a response of - "Is that for the XBOX 360 or the PS3."  The notion that the Rev can duplicate Nintendo DS success will all go back to Nintendo spending some money on marketing AND putting together a marketing strategy that will create some buzz.  How?  Using the media.  I mean, the controller received some love from TIME magazine for crying out loud.  Use that and build upon it.  Hell, get the non-gamer media people a shot at the new controller and make sure to impress their non-gaming asses.

Uhmmm...what's my point again?

Off topic, wouldn't it be nice if Nintendo paid the PlanetGamecube forum members for their marketing instead?  We've done a better job on the grassroots front than they've done the past 2 generations.

Actually, I had both the SNES and Genesis MK titles.  The SNES had significantly better graphics and sound.  The Genesis had the gore and it sold.  The poor SNES animations were reduced to lame "Fatalities".

...and yet I've always thought of Nintendogs to be the killer app for DS since I first saw it presented...especially the E3 presentation by the Big 'N.  Imagine what happens in Europe if word spreads about 'Electroplankton'.  The Big N should definitely market this one over there...all my European cousins would go crazy over that shiznit over the American crowd.

C'mon couchmonkey... this is good news for the DS...but the PS3 vs. Rev statement is reaching a bit.  The DS basically made up for the lack of GCN holiday success.

« on: January 04, 2006, 10:04:30 PM »
I know what you mean by playing Killer 7 slowly.  As far as the fast girl, I beat her with charged shots from Dan...just FYI.  It took a while.  Make sure you're stocked up on some thick blood to regenerate you EYEBALL energy.

As for True Crime: NY and GUN.  They are both just a tad bit too similar.  It was almost as if Activitsion told Lufoflux and Neversoft to work together on these games.  I feel like you're forced to play different gameplay types a little too much (e.g., gunfire, fighting, driving, horseback riding, Texas Hold 'Em) and I was almost forcing myself to like them.

GUN was solid for the horseback riding and landscape feel; however, it fell short with the gunfire aspect of it.  The storyline started off great, but then I felt like I was in the middle of Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman.

True Crime: NY is a much better game than True Crime: Streets of LA, but in the end...the storyline just got too monotonous.  The layout was much better than the original with the use of Taxi Cabs and the Subway system to instantly travel large distances; however, it still gave you that 'stuck in the mud' feeling that Streets of LA gave you.  Also, I found myself adjusting the color because I couldn't see when day to turned to night while driving in the open area.  The framerate is also ridiculously bad (like NES bad) when it rains.

Some positives for True Crime: NY

1.  Again, traveling large distances easily with the use of taxi cabs and subway systems.

2.  Side missions with informants are cool.

3.  You can buy your moves at a dojo instead of forcing yourself to learn them.  You really don't need to learn them to advance in the game.

4.  Much like the gang territory stuff in GTA: San Andreas, you can clean up crime in the separate city zones (e.g., Washington Heights, etc.)

5.  Once these zones/districts are reduced in terms of crime rate, more businesses will open up and you'll be allowed to shop and go into a variety of different buildings.

Some negatives:

1.  Just like Streets of LA, you're seeing more of the same in the level design.  The GTA series has the advantage of not being based on a real city because it can vary the designs of the different locations.  For example, forests and lakes to Venice Beach-like areas.  Aside from Central Park, everything is skyscraper and streets.

2.  Shooting guns needs to be redone somehow to feel more fluid (like Resident Evil 4).

CONCLUSION:

I would pick up True Crime: NY only if you enjoyed the original.

GUN is a rental game.  It doesn't even last long and the excitement for this game quickly dies.

I finally finished this game.  It took a while between games, but it was all worth the little bit of time I put into it since it was released last summer.  It is definitely a game that you'll have to review after completing it.  There's no way to put up a review when you've only played a couple of hours of it.

I don't want to repeat everything that we hear in all the reviews...BUT...after completing the game, I've felt like I've actually accomplished something cool...like after beating a Zelda game.  I think the last time I felt this good about beating a Cube game was Pikmin 2 (except I didn't have 100 purple Pikmin to pick up that last item).

Recently, since I've been on winter break, I've beaten True Crime: New York and GUN.  Both these games didn't reward me at all for beating them.

That's it.  My rating of the game:

8.5 / 10

This is almost one of those non-game games.

The PSP is doing well in America because of the marketing blitz for it.  Everywhere you look, someone's got a PSP and claiming that it is the business right now.  Nintendo needs better marketing in the US.

Soul Caliber III?  They've had at least 2 years to finish (if not more).  We're talking about a development cycle that may be less than a year if the REV is to launch in 2006 at all...assuming that they just started in October.

Shadow?  It was announced over a year ago.  VJ RHR?  Not sure...but Smash Bros. is not your ordinary game.  It is more special than Shadow and VJ.

Much like the GameBoy Player was done on the GCN (...and I guess the Super GameBoy for the SNES)...I think the new REV controller will mimick the touch screen functionality of the DS and allow us to play DS games on a tv set.

Hmmm...that was too far-fetched...back to the drawing board.

Hmmm...news @ IGN that SAKURAI has just opened an office in October and was given all the stuff HAL had on the GCN version.

So it all boils down to...

If Super Smash Bros. REVOLUTION has just started in the development cycle, when will this game be finished?  Iwata also stated that it is a launch title...does this mean the Revolution is coming out late 2006 to early 2007?  Last question...does anyone have any idea who this mysterious development house IS that is helping with game?  Supposedly they just finished a major game and have logged in major hours.

General Gaming / RE:Nice impressions of PDZ
« on: December 02, 2005, 10:12:24 AM »
I have played some PDZ...and decided to pick up Timesplitters: Future Perfect.  I was hoping that the price would've dropped by now...but that's beside the point.  After playing the 2 games, Free Radical's Timesplitters: Future Perfect and Rare's PDZ, I noticed that both play very similarily to each other (e.g., they've got no jumping).   Furthermore, I found the Free Radical entry this generation to be 10 times better than the next-generation PDZ.  It isn't even close.  Sure, PDZ in HD does have the advantage in looks, but in terms of gameplay and level design, there is a huge difference between the two.  Funny how the level designers from Goldeneye leave and this aspect of the two games just seems to jump out at you.

I'm still a RAREWARE fan...and I hope they can make their way back to the developer elite; however, from what I've played in the current generation(s), the Stamper bros. need to get crackin'.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Miyamoto Interview in Game Informer magazine

I hope the game-specific peripheral attachments don't turn the Rev Remote into a freakin' vacuum cleaner where you need a specific attachment for a different type of vacuuming situation.  It'll become too much of an inconvenience to keep track of 10 different peripherals.  Of course, the number 10 is exaggerated...but I'm simply making the point in reference to peripheral hassle.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Rev to feature 12GB custom discs?
« on: December 01, 2005, 06:38:05 PM »
...and here I thought the N64 generation of paying $59.00 on up for games was over.  I noticed that the XBOX 360 games are that high now.  I was just loving the $49.00 mark.  I've got more GCN games (60 GCN vs. 35 N64) than any of my previous Nintendo consoles...all due to price.

Anyone catch Matt's new mailbag at IGN about his impressions of the XBOX 360?

After reading it, I really disagreed with his impressions of the graphics in HI-DEF.  He says that it will be Nintendo's second biggest mistake behind going with cartridges over CDs.  While I agree with the latter, I completely disagree that the graphics in HI-DEF are the huge leap that we've been waiting for.

Anyone else read it?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:NINTENDO GAMES = BAD REPLAY VALUE
« on: November 29, 2005, 07:24:05 PM »
Uhmmm...I can't think of one game this generation with good replay value except for two of them:

(1)  Surprisingly, Beach Spikers holds up for all the chics and the guys that come over to hang out.

(2)  Animal Crossing = REPLAY value until you finally let the roaches run wild.

THIS TOPIC = A good way to look back at the generation we're about to give one last year with in the form of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Are you kidding me?  Are we being serious with thinking that MS would have a R&D group that stupid before purchasing RARE?  This is a pretty lame debate.  MS knew they weren't getting DK IPs...and it was right for RARE to leave with their original IPs.  Too bad Crystal Dynamics and Eidos didn't show Silicon Knights the same kind of love with the Legacy of Kain series.

Back on topic:  The Nintendo DS is surprisingly making it through the GTA:LCS buzz.  I know a lot of people who'd love to pick up this game and I thought it would be the PSPs killer app to take over the handheld market.  While still up in the air, the DS looks healthy with Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and more excellent software coming out.
