Nintendo Gaming / RE:Gear up for e3!!!!!
« on: April 09, 2006, 03:09:59 PM »
This will be my fifth E3 coming up...I was going all three days for the first 3...but now I'm down to just going to one and getting it all in on the first day...more giveaways (t-shirts, demos, etc.).  I missed it last year, but with the REV, there's no way I'm going to want to miss...especially with the news of Red Steel.  There's got to be more!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Red Steel Topic, new details added!

My internet is down for two days and I come back to find this welcomed surprise.  At first glance, I thought it was an April Fool's Joke...and a part of me isn't fully convinced it is real.

The other issues...what's to stop MS and Sony from copying this type of gameplay 6 months down the line...

Nintendo Gaming / RE:To buy or not to buy?
« on: April 07, 2006, 09:00:45 AM »
I am buying based on tradition.  Except for the NES, I've purchased every console at launch with at least 5 games (The N64 only had two launch titles...hehehe).  I've been satisfied with the product thus far and have no reason to doubt it.  I will be fully invested in the REV.

I agree that a licensed game 95% of the time is a bad idea.  The other 5% belongs to games like Goldeneye on the N64, which was an experiment gone right.

I've logged in approximately 25 hours of Chibi Robo over the course of the past 3 weeks.  It was slow at first, but once you upgrade you get addicted much like Animal Crossing.  That's all I want to say without spoilers.  I'm now stuck though at rank #2.

Nintendo Gaming / The Official Chibi Robo Thread
« on: February 04, 2006, 05:29:24 AM »
Yep...I've already searched and there isn't another topic...and I know that this is one of the most highly anticipated titles of all time...so I figured that I would start a thread.

Anyone who took that first statement seriously needs a drink.

Seriously though people, every video that I've seen of this game ever since its Japanese form has made me seriously consider buying this game.  I don't know what the draw is, but I think that developer Skip is bringing us this season's Battalion Wars...a sleeper hit that will flow under the radar.

Who's with me?

TalkBack / RE:Revolution FPS from Midway?
« on: January 28, 2006, 04:02:06 AM »
Midway...without the arcade machines, I'm thinking they're not going to survive the next generation like they're old pals at Acclaim.

As far as the Rev news, I'm not sure if Midway has put anything good out lately.  I can't think of a single title.

They need to just start fresh and stop milking their MK franchise dry.

I think the unveiling at the Kodak theatre will be Nintendo and Nintendo fans' finest hour.  Nintendo is putting up more hype for this year's E3 than any other...even more than the GCN and I was there for that one.  Of course, they showed some of the GCN at Spaceworld beforehand, which came away with a lot of mixed feelings as to why they didn't go with DVDs.

I don't think it is just Nintendo's status as a console-maker that's on the line here, but I really think that most hardcore gamers are just getting bored with gaming...period.  A lot of XBOX 360 friends are starting to realize that once you're over the whole graphics upgrade...that's it for the experience.  This is why I think Nintendo's controller is going to be so important.

Here's hoping Nintendo will deliver.

BTW:  Those Nintendo fans that started crying during Zelda's unveiling 2 years ago better not start crying this year...otherwise, I'm going to reach over a bitch-slap some sense into 'em.  Be happy, don't get overly dramatic...

HEHEHE!

If you're a fan of 2005...then it will take some time to get used to 2006.  Most people I talk to who adore 2005 initially do not like 2006.  2006 grew on them initially.  If I were you, I would rent first and then purchase.

For me personally, now that we've only got 2 teams left...and the Super Bowl is all that's left, I would wait until 2007 comes out.  You'll gain 2 things by this:

(1)  You can wait for a superior REV version...

OR

(2)  If the REV version is dumbed down (like the XBOX 360 version), you can always get 2006 cheaper by that time of year.

People complained that it never felt like you were in control, but I sware if people played like I did(try and run through with out stopping making it look as cool as possible for points) they would have a blast.

I couldn't agree more Caterkiller.  I never owned a non-Nintendo system, so I got to experience SA2 on the GCN when it was ported over.  I was blown away by the green forest stage of the game and I found myself revisiting the speed levels to show my buddies how cool I was playing the game.  They would eventually pick it up and try to out-shine my performance.  I've played a couple of the old school games on Genesis, but this promising.  My only gripe about SA2 was the treasure hunting / shooter levels of the game.  If Yuji Naka and his team would just make the games into the different speed courses, there wouldn't be a problem.  I think he can also do away with the whole adventure stuff too.

Heroes and Shadow were more of the same.  Looks like I have to go to the compilations and then Nintendo DS for the critically acclaimed stuff.  I hear Sonic Rush on the DS is the best 2D Sonic game ever.

I'm in SOCAL Nosferat2...and you're absolutely right...nobody works in California...and I've got 60+ despite the fact that I've turned GCN games in that were supposed to be good, but sucked (e.g., GUN).  What is the ratio?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:"Knowing" what we "know" now; thoughts?
« on: January 16, 2006, 05:57:57 AM »
$14.99 is too much to pay for a month.  I think if Nintendo wanted a flat rate, it should be $5.99 per month.  Why?  This is again based on the tentative list of games in the survey.  There aren't enough games for $14.99 per month.  The only way the $14.99 would be justified if Nintendo had the best WiFi service on the market (e.g., headset, exclusive MMORPGs, etc.) to compliment the Virtual Console.  This is the only way I'd drop $15/ month.

Different observation:  Nintendo's Virtual Console is trying too hard to capitalize on the iTunes model for music and video.  Similarities arise because you can still go into more alternate, yet illegal, means of downloading videogames, music, and video.

Ahem...MLK is huge for me since I'm a state employee of CA.  It allows me to take a break and put some time into some unfinished games.

Anyways, I agree with animecyberrat...Nintendo might just be landing their system for 2007.  A Fall 2007 launch date is probably the only way Nintendo can do a couple of things:

(1)  Better launch games and making full use of the REV controller.

(2)  Last minute hardware changes after observing XBOX 360 and PS3 launches.

(3)  Improve Nintendo WiFi to provide a gaming experience similar to XBOX Live and still remain $FREE-99.

That's it.

Back on topic though:  Too many good games...despite what many think, the GCN was loaded with good games...even more than the N64 era.  I would expect this trend to continue as Nintendo becomes even more familiar with 3D development cycles.  Miyamoto and EAD need to look at the pace Spielberg is filming and releasing these days...excellent planning and straight to the point with editing AND the movie still rocks.  I wish Nintendo was more like this.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:"Knowing" what we "know" now; thoughts?
« on: January 14, 2006, 07:43:55 PM »
LOL @ "numchuck"...hehehe...

Anyways...knowing what we know...here are my thoughts...

My thought process won't feel complete until we know everything...knowing what we know...but here's my assessment of some of your points:

2 to 3 times powerful seems good enough to me.  A lot of forum users keep using RE4 graphics multiplied by 2 to 3 times.  To me, this equals what I've seen in the first generation of XBOX 360 games.  I've played quite a few of the XBOX 360 games AND you can achieve the same type of gameplay from what I've seen so far.  It IS for this reason that I'm truly excited about the newly anticipated gameplay opportunities that we'll have with the new controller.

In terms of storage space, assuming that we're dealing with a minimum of 4.5 GB with the discs, I think Nintendo needs to get the number up just a little higher.  Games like WWE: DOR2 would have benefited.  There were a lot of third party complaints about the size.  I'm not saying we should have storage capacities needed for Hi-DEF, but at least enough for third parties to get the job done.  Just to drive this point home, XBOX 360 third party developers are complaining about the storage space.  (Note:  If you need a link, I'll try to find one from an interview with J. Allard)

Looking at the $19.99 N64 game price of the Virtual Console Survey, I was a bit disappointed.  I know that it was only a survey and nothing has been confirmed (the keyword here in this topic ).  On a different note, I was happy to see Blast Corp on the list; however, $19.99 would drive some just to easily get these ROM games illegally via the internet.  Nintendo should, at the most, charge $9.99.

Finally, as far as the DS interaction, I'm hoping Nintendo will give the REV the opportunity to play DS games somehow, so we don't have to buy a DS Player or something.  The REV controller may have the capability to emulate the DS touch screen.  While we're at it, throw in Game Boy compatibility and we'll definitely have THE ultimate Nintendo console that can play its whole library.  If this is Nintendo's last generation, might as well go out with a bang!

Uhmmm...that last statement I just made...I take it back...Nintendo will survive.

I guess we'll just have to wait and find out just if the REV remote is going to get ripped.

Anyways, Sony's PS3 controller isn't finalized...

QUESTION for someone with LEGAL KNOWLEDGE:  Can Nintendo patents actually hold up to stop other companies from stealing their controller idea?  OR was the WaveBird, Rumble Pack, Analog Stick under the same so-called Nintendo patent that does absolutely nothing?

Reader Reviews / Madden NFL '06 better on GCN?
« on: January 11, 2006, 07:57:37 PM »
In the spirit of the NFL playoffs (for those who care around here), here is my quick overview of Madden NFL '06.

I took a couple of seasons off and just happened to play Madden NFL '05 and Madden NFL '06 on the PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360, and GCN.  Both my XBOX, XBOX 360, and PS2 fanboy friends have agreed that the GCN is simply much easier to control and looks better even without the on-line mode.

CONTROL:  Much more responsive and there's that feeling of being able to kick PATs and Field Goals easily.  The GCN does boast the least amount of buttons; however, I've found it a lot more easier than the four shoulder buttons of the PS2, which I've not been able to hit on a consistent basis.  The XBOX is just wrong for control with the use of the black and gray buttons for receivers.  It should be noted that the learning curve for the GCN control is somewhere between the PS2 and the XBOX and XBOX 360 controls.

GRAPHICS:  With the exception of the XBOX 360, the GCN version just seems to make really good use of the anti-aliasing.  Sometimes you can see the engine redrawing the onscreen players; however, it is a small sacrifice when you see the characters with better detail.

For the game itself:

The game has come along way since I first played the current generation Madden NFL on PS2.  The gameplay has become much more immersive in terms of play calling and audibles.  Running play action is stunning and gone are the unnecessary animations of old (e.g., the one-handed catch that began the current generation of consoles).  The "truck stick" addition helps the running game tremendously and compliments last year's "hit stick" defensive controls.

Other new additions to the game include the QB vision.  This new feature has received a mixed review.  For me, it helps you to track your receivers while running their routes.  Sometimes, people with bad field vision will lose their receiver as they look at other options to see if they are open.  This QB vision allows a player to track one receiver as it highlights their movements on the field in a coned shape spotlight from the QB to receiver.  You can manually move this highlighted field of vision from one receiver to the other using the C-stick.

One nice cosmetic addition is the use of a radio show.  I'm a big fan of Tony Bruno here in Los Angeles with 1540AM "The Ticket".  It was nice to hear that based on the results of one week to the next during a simulated season, there is a broadcast based on scores and highlights.  A newspaper is also generated like the old school SNES sports games like Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball.  Getting back to the radio broadcast, I'm impressed with the voice work and having some callers call in on other segments.  Callers are easier to understand VS. the Jim Rome "Crones".

Al Michael and John Madden seem to be at the top of their game as well.  Although we've been forced to listen to the "master of the obvious" John Madden since the series began, we're given good play-by-play commentary from Al Michaels.

Another strength of the game is the catalog of animations that Tiburon has been able to generate over the years.  Again, they've come a long way from the one-handed catch of the first Madden NFL PS2 title.  Running backs duck under diving tackles, the "hit stick" defensive tackles look a lot more vicious than ever, and the "truck stick" animations look like that poor USC defensive player who got stuck to Vince Young's leg while attempting a sack.

Different Game Modes also add to the Replay Value.  The Franchise Mode is better than it has ever been.  The Training Camp really does allow you to incorporate RPG elements in giving your individual players better attributes.

I think that's this REVIEW in a nutshell...

GRAPHICS:  8.5

GAMEPLAY:  8.5

PRESENTATION:  9.0

REPLAY VALUE:  8.0

FUN FACTOR:  8.0

OVERALL 8.5 / 10

That's it.
