So I haven't played Pokemon since Ruby and I really didn't get that into any of them except for the original.  However due to internet meme smugleaf, the youtube sensation of "black man loves pokemon" and other intadvertent viral stuff this game its been on my radar.  I went to best buy and picked it up sunday.  I got a $5 gift card for buying pokemon that day which was awesome.

So my impressions
- Pokemon look more inspired than any generation since the first
-The pixelated pokemon in battles are annoying
-The 3D backgrounds with sprite characters reminds me of Xenogears, Breath of Fire and other Early PSX rpgs
- Its suprisingly fun.  There is more of a "story" and I kind of really like it.

I put about 4 1/2 hours into yesterday so it was pretty fun.  I'm surpirzed I like it so much.  I guess skipping a few generations made it more fun?

@ Johnny.

Glad you played Enslaved.  I greatly enjoyed that title.  I think it was overlooked.  I watched people play Uncharted but I never played it.  Enslaved seems to have been the sci-fi version of that.  So I enjoyed due to its story being more inventive.  I think Andy Serkins really delivered in his preformance.  I can't think of many games that have had an acotr really define it the way he defined that game.

haha thanks for linking me that.

I ended up picking up Ys last night.  It’s incredible.  It’s like a mix of 1/2 minute hero's rpg mode and Zelda.  Now I know why people rave about these games.  I'm really enjoying the contemporary brilliance of its sound and graphical design.  If I had played these twenty years ago it would have been mind blowing.  Plus 80s- early/mid 90s anime looks is way better than the late 90s-modern MOE crap.

I'll wait on faxanadu and Zelda2 because I got Super Mario Rpg as I've only played it at a friend’s.  But I've been going VC crazy lately so it probably will be soon when I get those.

Someone should do a VC recommendation for Ys book 1 &2.

Also note there is a little none sequel to Faxanadu on the Nokia N - Gage called Xanadu next.  Don't think its ever been ported except pc in japan.

Love the retro music thrown in.  Its a nice improvement.

Maybe I'll check out faxandu and zelda 2 on VC.  I want to pick up Ys on Vc for turbo graphx.  Maybe I'll get all 3 and go retro aciton rpg nuts.

If I can only get one should I get Steel Diver or Pilot Wings?  Bust a Move is the wild card.

Currently leaning towards Pilot Wings but it just being wuhu island feels tech demoish.  Steel Diver was in development hell for so long which makes me hesitant.

Guess I'll wait for reviews?

Zach I think you are like me.  I also don't really enjoy bioware games.  So I've never played Mass Effects or dragon age.  I also feel the fascination with the "choose your own adventure" mechanic in WRPGs is ultimately stupid like it is in books.  To me it shows the devs aren't confident with their narrative giving people the fun so they give you "choices" to be fun.  The reason why its so popular in games right now compared ot books is caused games are inherently interactive so its seems cooler.  But ultimately I think wrpgs are a fad like choose your own adventure novels in the 90s.  It will go away or become way less popular in a few years.  I think.

Haha nothing like opening up with Zach singing.  There should be a musical number in cricket cast.

Do you guys feel activision will have learned from murdereing these franchises to give CoD a break and not milk it to death?

Also why no lamenting Hudson USA in the news section?

Like 1/2 my VC games are turbografx -16 stuff.  (Cause I love shmups)

I'll have to check out Alundra.  I've bought like 1/2 of the import PSone titles as they are all shmups and magical drop.  Victor Ireland is the man.  I hope they bring over Moon.

Also thanks Johnny for trolling me listener question from last week at the end of the show :P Gave me a chuckle. I'll have to dig out my GBA SP and play the Zelda on that today in memory of the original.  Lets hope for a Zelda anniversery collection that doesn't suck.

I think I did play some optional dungeons on Cthulu, and I also tend to explore the locations thoroughly for treasure. I played the trial for Breath of Death VII but decided on Cthulu instead since it's newer and improveder.

I would still encourage you to play through it.

Yeah I was getting everything but the last few dungeons I was overleveled enough and getting kinda bored so I rushed through them.

I find it funny 2 guys made these paraody JRPGs that are among the best jrpgs I've played in a good 5 years.

Also thanks for reading my question about Zelda.  I think Greg is right that if they blur the dungeons enough that it will be 'different' enough.  I've just found the last 2 DS and TP were somewhat forgettable.  I dunno I just want them to do something different to catch my attention again while still having the "spirit" of Zelda. OofT, MM & WW were all unique enough to be incredibly memorable.  Zeldas have lost it since then.  So far nothing in about SS has caught my eye really.  I know alot of people feel the same.  Its weird for the first time ever a console Zelda hasn't got my hype train going for like 2 years.

If you liked Cluthlu Saves the World you must play his original rpg Breath of Death 7.  Its only $1 and just as fun an quirky.  There are earthbound jokes.

Also if you go to rpgamer.com you can here Cluthlu's creator on on their rpg sanctom podcast as well as as episode of their weekly regular rpgcast podcast.  He's a pretty cool guy.

You're 15 hours in and haven't won?  I think I beat it in 7.  Are you playing it on hard?  Did you do the optional dungeons?

I hope Konami still brings out Bomberman 3DS and release Bonk Brink of Extinction.

I feel guilty not getting lost in shadow.  To bad my release calender is full for the next few months.

Turbographx is the thing I download the most VC games of.  Hudson you were underappreciated.

RIP.

Call of Duty gen claims another.

Hey guys thanks for answering my question!

In regards to VC handheld I share Zach's fear.  I'm worried GB VC console will forgotten about by the time they would get around to GBA & other platform holders.

I'll have to get LA day one.  I loved that game as a kid.  I got GBC when it came out with LADX and it was epic.

Also FFIX is my absolute favorite FF.  Its my favorite game ever besides OofT.  Its got a fun protaginists instead of an emo dude.  Its Yoshitaka Amano's art instead of nomura stuff.  So it looks like the old 8/16 bit FF.  Its the most beautiful game on playstation and the best pre-rendered game.  Andy I can't recommend it enough to you.  I've been meaning to get it on PSN and play it on my PSP.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Who's still buying a 3DS at launch?
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:57:10 AM »
I'm getting a blue one.  Not sure what game.  I held onto my DS phat until DSi came out.  Personally I think 3DS was in the oven longer than GBA and DS so it will be longer till a redisgn.  The launch windows looks a bit meh but still more encouraging than DS and I still had alot of fun with my DS in the first 6 months.  I am more excited for NGP but it will drive me crazy if people are talking about 3DS in March and I don't have one.

Plus Steel Diver is a new IP and Pilot Wings is a franchise thats been ignored for 15 years.  We always complain Nintendo should bring back old stuff and make new IPs.  Time to put $ where you mouth is.  I will.

Yeha Interesting mention for Fragile.  I feel the same way.  It was flawed and per my email you read awhile ago I think it owuld have gone better had they not answered all the questions and focused instead on the emotional sense of isolation.  But yeah that games ability to make you feel depresssed and lonesome and the use of sound design are so unique they deserve mention.

I can only hope.  So far Nintendo buying Monolith has meant I don't get monolith games.  I would really like that to change or I may have to resent Nintendo forever for this.

The gamestop prices seem to be BS to me.  But then again PSP games were $40-50 at launch now they are all $20-40 because the market place wouldn't sustain it.  I think if people try to sell $50 3DS game it won't last long.

Also lame no Samus in DOA outside of level cameo.  I still want that game buy my desire decresaed somewhat.

MegaByte.  I'm looking forward to impressions from the event.  I actually enjoyed the first one.  Though I liked the games conspiracy theory hodge podge story more than the multiplayer. I'll have to wait for this one cause of saving up for 3DS.  But hopefully I'll get it sometime later in the spring.
