Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 238: RFN Backstage Assault!
« on: April 12, 2011, 02:01:14 PM »
How is it blasphemy to say Panzer Dragoon is better than Starfox?  Starfox is a cool engine form Dylan Cuthbert with some cute non offensive characters thrown on it.  Its basically an overly glorified tech demo.

PD is a tech demo to show off Saturn.  However Team Andormeda and Smilebit put in huge efforts.  They invented a language.  There are thousands of pages of art and back story.  I love Starfox but its sophomoric effort compared to Panzer Dragoon.

So nothing wrong with your statement Ninsage.

Also Sega does own the rights.  That's why the new game from M$ by the some of the key people from Team Andromeda is called "Project Draco."  Sega still has rights but god knows they would ruin a new PD unless it was the Valkyria Chronicles team doing an RPG of it.  But hell they woudls till ruin it cause they woudl replace th Moebius inspired art with MOE anime crap.

General Gaming / Panzer Dragoon Saga (at last I have you)
« on: April 12, 2011, 11:24:48 AM »
Hey guys.  Who else is a big Panzer Dragoon fan?

I have been since I played the second one on my friend's Saturn.  Orta was the first game and main factor in me getting an xbox back in 2003.

I after many years have finally broken down and spent the $180 odd dollars to track down a copy of Saga.

I played through the first disc.  Man this game is incredible.  Everything just flows together perfectly.  The presentation is great.  Every second has something going on.  The music and art style fit together to create this barren desolate atmosphere.  The battle system is the perfection of ATB form that 32 bit era.  It uses positioning to create a strategy/tactical element to it.  I had no idea you could take rail shooting and actual translate it to brilliant ATB turn based RPG.

I currently just beat the first disc.  About 3 horus and change (them game is supposedly 15-20hrs)

However my Saturn's internal battery is dead.  So if I turn off the power my save file is lost. I ordered some replacement batteries but I'm hoping to not have to restart.  Hope leaving the thing on for days doesn't kill it.

I have a save cart that region unlocks it but this game is late enough to block it out cause it knows I'm hacking.  Wish I knew that so I could have replaced the internal clock battery before buying this.

Anyways I'm creating this thread for discussion on the Panzer series in general.  Once I beat Saga I'd be more than willing to have a spoiler discussion on the story.  However lets keep it blacked out.  Considering the fortune people spend to get this the last thing they want is something spoiled.

Hope there are more PD and bitter Sega fans out there.

Thanks for the Panzer Dragoon plug.  I love those games.  I played all of them.  Also Johnny the story is the best.  Dunno why you don't enjoy it.  I love those games.  I literally just after 10 years of meaning to do it bought saga.  Its gotta be the most Unique 32 bit JRPG I've ever played.  I dunno if its worth $200 (unless your a hardcore Panzer fan like me) but from playing through the first disc of it this may be the best 32 bit game I've ever played.  After I beat it I'll make a topic for it in the non Nintendo forums.

I'll buy a Kinect to Play Project Draco if that wasn't vaporware.

I really enjoyed Fragile Dreams.  In fact last spring RFN read my letter to James Jones.  Its to bad you can't appreciate it Johnny.  But to each his own.  But you encouraged other people not to play it instead of stating something like "if your tastes are like mine you won't enjoy this." Seems a bit hostile? But I'm not here to hate.  I think people should play it.  Sorry you didn't like it and felt like you wasted your time.

I really enjoy the laid back atmosphere to this show.  Also the famicom music breaks are awesome.

Glad you all are safe.  Hope that this big aftershock today didn't negatively affect you guys.

I loved Custom Robo on GCN.  The DS one was kinda meh.  I doubt Nintendo will bring this franchise back but we can hope.

Plus I think 3D depth would make the controls alot better.  There definitely issues with the others.

Really the thing that killed me about the DS one was the fact that everyone online had illegal parts so unless you beat the single player there was no point to going online.

@ Johnny

I doubt Pikmin 3 will be on Wii.  It will likely be stillborn given the Wii's situation.  I bet Pikmin 3 will be 3DS with AR support.  It would generate the most hype and likely sell more copies.  It probably wouldn't be hard to take whatever Wii planning they have and move it over.  But maybe I'm just hoping.

I wasn't sure of the ghosting was just me in Pilot Wings.  I guess everybody else notices that.  Its annoying.

So how much would it be to get used European Wii.  Can I just use my Wii's AC adapters?  Should we just protest Reggie's house?  Seriously Monolith was one of my favorite devs last generation.  When Nintendo bought them I thought "awesome Monolith Rpgs with serious backing."   But no actually it meant Nintendo screws me and robs me of Monolith games forever.  Seriously sell the damn licenses to stuff you won't publish you a**holes.

I actually bought this.  It was only $30 as to 40 and a puzzle game is always needed on a enw handheld.  I agree with your criticism but I think you were a little to harsh.  My main criticism would be its lack of multiplayer.  I actually find its 3D the least abrasive of all the games I got.

I'm kinda regretting pre-ordering Steel Diver.  But I guess we'll see.

I pre-ordered mine at best buy.  They told me they were gonna put all the pre-ordered stuff at the customer service counter sunday morning and to pick it up there.  Granted I'm getting it at the the King of Prussia best buy which is next ot the 2nd largest mall in the US so I think they will have more customer traffic than most best buys so I didn't wanna take a chance not pre-ordering it there.  But your typical best buy will probably have extras.

I hate you now Konami.  I seriously may never buy any of your stuff again.  Seriously I know Korinpna makes money.  Plus bomberman 3DS looked like it was a real endeavor and not a rehash.  Seriously this is BS.  I doubt any of these titles cost that much or were high risk.  What do they need the extra money and dev time for?  To buy an editor for Hideo Kojima?

I beat White with 31:30 on the clock.  I really enjoyed the art direction of the levels at the end.  I turned off battle animations by the 8th gym.  The game was starting to outstay its welcome.  I encountered 138 and caught 42.  So congrats on the diversity you see.  Overall I really liked it it.  The ending felt a little thoughtless considering the build up but still I really enjoyed how much of a 16 bit rpg this felt like.

Its the first pokemon I really enjoyed since the first.  I hope the gen 6 pushes it even further into a story driven direction.

I love both Bonk and Bonk's Revenge.  I still have to play the third one.  Bonk's Revenge is better IMO.

Finally,  Pedro have you tried Airzonk?  I really enjoyed it.  I'm a huge shmup fan so it really worked for me.  Plus the variety of power ups is rarely seen.  I still can't get through the boss rush at the end.  If you like Bonk check it out!

My little brother has gotten into TG-16 collecting recently.  I have to say the majority of my VC games are TG-16.  Its such an unappreciated system.

I just played Pilot wings at best buy.  The 3D effect is a bit sensitive so its a pain its mounted.  But when I got it in focus it was great.  The plane was absolutely amazing looking 3D.  I pre-ordered PW and Steel Diver.  I couldn't order Bust a Move it said 3/29 but gamestop is still listing 3/27.  Might have to go to a different store?  Dunno. Getting all 3.  I am pumped for launch now.

@ Unclebob

It wasn't aimed at anyone person.  Sorry if you took it that way.  Just seen people in various forums/gaming communities worrying about 3DS getting delayed kinda irks me.  It was generalities and addressed to the whole Nintendo fan community.

"bro" was just a turn of phrase.

Think about it this way.  For them to have issued a statement like that means somebody has to have asked.  I'm sure there is a lot on their minds.  From family & friends, to seeing if their business partners are okay.  Checking on EAD Tokyo.  Helping with relief efforts etc.  The rolling balck outs and Nuclear issues.  Not that going on with business as normal isn't ultimately whats best for evryone.  Its just bothersome that someone didn't wait or was so concerned with 3DS that they asked Nintendo.

I'm really liking the use of camera angles for some of the dramatic moments.  It feels very PSX era JRPG.

I'm through 5 gyms now.  Its pretty fun so far.  I enjoy the gym designs.  I guess my main complaint is that every town is like "team plasma problem" then "fight gym leader."  But Its still fun.

It seems pretty inapropriate to me that people are worried about whether or not they are still getting there 3DS because of the crisis in Japan.  I think you might want to sort your priorities.  Its not the end of the world if you have to wait until april.

Like I was counting down the days bro but right now I'm just worried about my friends in Tokyo & Sapporo.
